ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian nailed Houston Astros are winner in MLB Trade Deadline 2025 with Carlos Correa

We talked about the Dodgers not being terribly active. The Yankees making moves to address the bullpen and of course Ryan McMahon. The Red Sox go out and they get Dustin May, but the deadline may have been one over the previous two three days with the Seattle Mariners, right? And we go back even 9 10 days starting when they traded for Josh Naylor with that deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks and then a Huenio Suarez the slugger playing third base. My goodness, you look at the Mariners lineup. JP Crawford, Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh, who’s a likely American League MVP at this point. They are absolutely stacked with a great rotation that they think is going to be intact by the middle of August. This is a team in a wideopen American League in 2025 where you could see the Mariners making the World Series. Each thrown at the first pitch of a World Series game, right, the Padres’s got Mason Miller throws 102 miles an hour. He is got 20 saves. He’s an elite closer and he joins now maybe the best bullpen in baseball which it might have been anyway before he showed up. They still have Robert Suarez who had 30 saves that leads the National League. He throws 100 miles an hour also. They have Jason Adam who made the All-Star team. Adrien Morahone their bullpen is loaded and you can win in October especially these days with a deep versatile bullpen. And I don’t think there’s a deeper more versatile bullpen than what the Padres’s have. I’ll tell you this though, the Houston Astros might argue with you and say, “We have Josh her and we have a Bru there as well and King has done fantastic setting those guys up, but the big acquisition was Carlos Korea. You go and you bring them back home.” He waves the no trade clause. Buster said it earlier. Um the Minnesota Twins giving the Houston Astros $33 million to go along with Carlos Korea to help out on that trade. He’s been there. He’s done it. He’s won there before. and he’s been a huge part of their success. Look, Pena right now is hurt. You, yes, you need a third baseman, but when Pena comes back, before he comes back, I expect Korea to be at short, then transition over to third base. He’s done it when the World Baseball Classic for Puerto Rico. I think this is a great move for the Houston Astros and it tells everyone we’re still around. Let’s not forget Sanchez as well. Jesus Sanchez got added to the Houston Astros. The Houston Astros are saying, “Okay, Seattle, you guys made moves. Texas, you made moves. Angels, you’re making moves. We’re still in first place by five games.” I think about what the Phillies did by adding Yawan Durant. I think about what the Mets did addressing the bullpen and Cedric Mullins and Jeff Passen. We got some buzzer beaters who got in before the deadline. Camilo Dval going to the New York Yankees. They’d already gotten David earlier in the day. The Yankees are bulking up that bullpen for a playoff run. The most surprising trade of the day, Griffin Jacks going to the Tampa Bay Rays. Guys, we had talked about the Rays trying to win baseball games. And Griffin Jax, one of the best relievers in baseball, joins a bullpen that already has been loaded, but has been injured with Manny Rodriguez and Hunter Biggie out. A a shocking move and yet a move that illustrates the Rays want to win. They believe that in this American League, guys, they can be a playoff team. Buster, I’m thinking about what Jeff just said. The Yankees now can go to Camilo Dval, David Bednar, Devin Williams, Luke Weaver at the back end. Jake Bird from the Colorado Rockies. Look at one of the the Yankees in the last decade have typically built great bullpens. This year, it’s been a disaster area. So, Brian Cashman, their general manager, went in big. I thought going in this deadline there was more pressure on him to make impact moves and man they stepped up. Have they ever? Jeff, one more move to catch us up on. Yeah, sorry my head spinning a little bit here. I just I like it like this. I just straight up forgot. Charlie Morton’s going to the Detroit Tigers, guys. And look, the Tigers want to win a World Series this year. They have been the best team in the American League throughout this season. And with TK Scubble at the top of the rotation, they’re now adding a veteran arm to it. Uh, the Tigers have aspirations this October. Charlie Morton, one of the most wellrespected players in all of baseball in what could be his final season. Looks like he’s going to make a playoff run in Detroit. So, Charlie Morton joins Chris Paddock there in Detroit for the AL Central leading Tigers who will be on Sunday Night Baseball in Philadelphia. Hannah, possible World Series preview here on Major League Baseball trade deadline day that happened today. Eduardo, what stood out to you about the moves in the American League West? Uh, the jockeying for position. First it was the Seattle Mariners, right? Making those moves, being able to get Oho Suadis. They started it off with Josh Naylor, but you get Oho Suarez and then all of a sudden because they’ve been so good in the pitching side of it because they’ve extended their lineup even though they are up five G even though they are behind five games on the Houston Astros. The Houston Astros go out and get Carlos Koreah and Jesus Sanchez and they they bring it back. This is a division that has been just going back and forth. The jockeying of these two teams and then the Texas Rangers as well. We don’t know how this is going to finish, but it’s going to be fantastic the next two months. I tell you what, Astros fans must have been beside themselves to have Koreah come back to Houston and bring that World Series vibe. All right. I know you’re shaking your head. I mean, you’re shaking my head for 3 hours. Oh, I know. Um, Padres’s, okay, they make a statement with their moves. The Dodgers basically, they stand Pat. They have the three-game lead in the NLS. So, I What do you make of the Padres’s push? Well, they just upgraded their bullpen into a monster bullpen. Now, they got Mason Miller from the A’s. He throws 102 m an hour. He has 20 saves and he’s got four years of control. They still, of course, have Robert Suarez who has 30 saves to lead the National League. He also throws 100 m an hour. Jason Adam is still with them. He made the All-Star team. Adrien Morahone is on their team. If this team has a lead after five or six innings, it’s essentially over. You win in the postseason with deep, versatile bullpens. And I’m not sure there’s a deeper, more versatile one than that of the Padres. Uh, a team that really went all out to address their bullpen, the Yankees. And we want to show you their highlights from today. Something really crazy happened. Obviously, they hold the top wild card spot in the AL. They’re facing the race. So, here we go. Well, this is bottom of the first. This is before the rain delay. Paul Goldmith popping that up. Look at Taylor Walls. He can’t find it, but his teammates can’t help him out. That falls for a double. And that’s the kind of day that the Yankees offense would have. Yeah. And that and that’s how the day started. And then Bellinger gets a base hit. And then you have this mammoth of a man and you hand him a slider. Just look how far this baseball goes. I mean, doesn’t everybody know that John Carlos Stan with a two-run home run. The Yankees are up three nothing. And then bottom of the second, a two-1 for Ben Rice. Oh, Ben Rice did not miss this off speed pitch at all. And this is the thing with the Yankees, the versatility, right? You get the fast ball right there. Two-2 count. He deposits it for a three-run homer as well. Ben Rice has been hitting like crazy this season. What a great 16th home run. They take a 74 lead. Then we go into a long rain delay and after play resume, this is just insane. The Yankees acquire Jose Cavierro from the race during the game, right? Right. So, I mean, what do you do? They I mean, you just has to walk to the other dugout, I guess. Right. And he could play shortstop. He could play checkabase. He can really run. But what the Yankees did was they upgraded their bullpen also. It’s like every team upgraded their bullpen. They got David Bednar from the Pirates. They got Camilo Dval from the Giants. So now they with with they also have of course Luke Weaver and Devin Williams. So they have four closers on their team. Now this is the newest one. Benar was an elite closer a few years ago. Hit a terrible slump, made a comeback this year and the Yankees went and got him. The only question Eddie is who’s going to be the primary closer for the Yankees? Yeah, that’s a good problem to have, right? You also get Fernando Cruz who’s going to come back from the IIL soon. It’s it’s different closing games in San Francisco. It’s different closing games in Pittsburgh. When you put the pinstripes on, we’re going to find out how easy or how hard it is because it it took Deon Williams quite some time. Jake Bird, too. I mean, crazy. I mean, they went nuts. But you know what? They have a 6.29 RA. They’re relievers in July. So, that’s the second worst of any team in baseball. So, they went out, they did what they had to do. You two have been doing what you had to do. We are never letting you two go. Eduardo Perez and Tim Kirchin.

  1. Say what? Correa was the worst deal of the day. Declining, oft-injured and overpaid player who is changing positions? No thanks. I’ll be shocked if this works out well for the Stros.

  2. Astros fans be like:

“We HATE correa because he left us for more money!”

“Now we LOVE correa because he’s one of the boys!”

    🤣🤡

Btw, the current correa isn’t an upgrade at 3rd, just a replacement.
