A’s HAVEN’T changed after Mason Miller Trade

Here’s Brody Brazil. Well, once again, a very busy trade deadline day across Major League Baseball. Certainly some surprises and moves that nobody could have seen coming, but also a handful of transactions that were predictable even as recently as last night. I’m talking about Mason Miller, who was on the A’s, now is on the Padres’s. JP Sears also part of this transaction, too. But last night, the A’s had a game where there was a save situation. Miller stayed out there in the bullpen. They didn’t bring him into the contest. It led a lot of people to thinking and wondering that he might be on the trading block. Turns out he was. He and Sears both headed south to San Diego. So, the A’s closer and one of their premier starters, one of their most consistent and most productive starters in recent years, both headed to the Padres’s. Obviously, San Diego trying to make another extreme push. And we’ll talk about the deal versus the overall theme and big picture of this athletics franchise. That’s why you’re also seeing the owner here, John Fischer, depicted. Also, I should mention in terms of being depicted, that’s a Photoshop job clearly on Mason Miller and JP Sears. Those heads, they don’t exactly match the bodies. And I I give full marks to the Padres’s social media team. Sometimes you’re in a rush. It’s all you can do. It’s the best you can do, but sometimes h the colors look fine. like the skin tones are okay, but the heads and dimensions and body sizes and maybe it’s just cuz I I I know these guys and I’ve seen them firsthand. Um, when you really stare at that Photoshop, it doesn’t match. But whatever, they’re already in Padres’s jerseys that they’ve never actually worn. Okay, the trade versus the trend. That’s what this video is all about. Aesthetically, in terms of the trade, it’s not a bad deal for the A’s. The Padres’s receive obviously Mason Miller, the righty, and the lefty JP Sears. Miller this year sporting a 376 ERA. I won’t put the win loss record in for either pitcher because that’s a team stat and the team isn’t doing great. But individually, a 376 erra, 20 saves, basically around half the team’s wins have been saved by the righty Mason Miller this year. JP Sears in a starting role has made 22 starts, a 495 RA. He’s completed 111 innings pitched. Now, I’m also not including wins and losses for him, but I also want to let you know each of the last two years, the prior two years, JP Sears made all of his all of his starts. I think he got to 32 each of the last two seasons in Oakland. Yes, I can say in Oakland because that’s where he was pitching. But this year, 22 starts obviously on pace for about that 30 plus start plateau here in 2025. consistent pitchers that the Padres’s will need and love and enjoy for this year and beyond. Both of those players still under team control for a lot of years. I’ll talk about that in a second. But what the A’s get in return, it is a hall. It is definitely a hall and it’s highlighted and headlined by the shortstop Leo Dere. The number three overall prospect in Major League Baseball, not just the Padres’s organization or the National League. the number three overall prospect in baseball is the centerpiece of this deal coming back for the A’s. Now, no disrespect to the other three pitchers here, the righty Braden Net, the righty Henry Bayz, and the righty Eduardell Nunees. Uh both highly touted number three, number 13, and number 17 overall in the pro in the uh San Diego prospect pipeline. So, the A’s getting a bunch of talented players back in return, but they’re just getting younger. They’re trading known commodities for more players that they hope will work out. And how many times have we seen this before? The A’s have done this for more than a decade consistently now. Take two players who you know can contribute to your team and help your team win. And maybe if you get one or two, and if you’re really lucky, three of these names to really turn out, to really pan out, then it’s going to be another one of those good deals down the road. right here, right now. If you’re the A’s, you just took yourself out of winning a lot more games this year and probably next year. We’ll get to that in just a second. But I also want to just highlight Dere here for just a second because this is the centerpiece of the deal. He’s 18 years old. He’s a switchhitting shortstop. Lindorike, Kareahike. Those are the comps for this young 18-year-old shortstop who’s currently playing in high A. He’s going to go play for the Lancing Lugnuts, the single A team in the A’s organization. But back when the Padres’s got him, he was signed as a number one overall international prospect in Major League Baseball. I’ve talked to some people that would know better than anybody else. They’ve seen him play. They understand his talents. The hopes are very high for Leo Dere, but he’s also 18 years old playing in single A. I say that in two ways. Number one, he’s exceeding expectations because not a lot of 18-year-olds in single A baseball. But at the same respect, it’s a lot of years until he’s a finished product, and you still don’t exactly know how that’s going to turn out. From Baseball America, here’s the scouting report. Shows advanced plate skills and good angles on contact. At present, like at 18 years old, he lacks average or better raw power, but his projectable frame hints at future above average pop. Defensively, he’s considered a pure shortstop with the fluidity and body to control and body control to be an above average to plus defender. I wish I could read better. You understand hopefully what I’m saying here. It’s all very much raw potential right now with certainly the ceiling and the expectation of something very high. So, not a bad deal even with Dere alone. That’s kind of the highlight and that’s kind of the the gist of this trade. And you don’t see a a prospect that highly ranked traded very often. And that means something, right? The A’s had to give up something to get something back. But it’s not the trade again. It’s the theme. The trade’s fine. The trade just kicks the can down the road. But that’s what the A’s have always been doing. It’s the theme of the trade. The A’s right now 48 and 63. That means they’re on pace for a 70 and 92 record season. That’s plus one wins from last year. So, did they improve? Did they get better? Are their young players making a difference? I know they’ve called up Wilson. They’ve called up Curts. They’re doing impressive things. More on them in just a second. But Mason Miller, you had a player who was an all-star, again, a known commodity, who was pre-arbitration. Mason Miller won’t be a free agent until 2030. And if your idea is to be the athletics and to go to Las Vegas and play the 2028 season on the strip, well, you have team control over Mason Miller until 2030. You can have him for the 28 and 29 seasons closing games. Not only that, you can have him be part of the excitement of 26 and 27 when you should be ramping up, when you should be expanding your roster and winning a bunch of games in Sacramento because the hype has to happen before the team actually arrives in Las Vegas. More on that in just a second. I don’t want to get too far ahead of my main points. But you also have JP Sears, again, the team’s only consistent starter. 86 starts under his belt since the beginning of the 2023 season. but even he would not be a free agent until the 2029 campaign. So, you’ve got players that are under team control that are known commodities that you did not have to get rid of. A lot of times when there’s one year left, maybe two years left, that’s when you think about making a move. The A’s are so premature in moving these players compared to the team control they have over them. Now, I also realize a lot of people think that Mason Miller and the amount of arm injuries he’s previously sustained that that would be an issue. But look, he was a starter. They moved him into the bullpen. They made him the closer after the 2023 season. It was very clear that his stuff was electric. And if you condensed it into one inning at a time, and even if you didn’t use him on back-to-back games or occasions, he’d still be very valuable for you. throwing 103 104 miles an hour his stuff it plays well and it plays on any team. The problem is for the A’s now it’s on the Padres’s. So again a known commodity in Miller as the centerpiece from the A’s side. And what do you get out of this? Only future pieces really. It’s the same old story. It’s not the trade. It’s the theme and the trend of what’s going on here. It’s not the names and actual talents of this trade. It’s the concept that the flips keep happening. Again, I’ll point this out. Does this trade mean that the A’s are going to be better in 26 and 27? Did they become a better team for the next two years? Not likely. You have to be good soon. You cannot just think that you’ll flip a switch and all of a sudden in 2028 the payroll is going to go up, your players talent, player talents are going to go up. It’s just not going to happen that way. There has to be a ramp up. the ramp up should be starting right now. And instead of that happening, it’s going the opposite direction. And no disrespect to Miguel Anduhar, but I also realize that he is a player of a different ilk that does not really belong in this conversation. What going to the Cincinnati Reds? That’s that’s different. That’s a player who does not fit in your next couple years necessarily. But Sears and Miller absolutely do. So the A’s are what? always going to just be two to three years away. And that’ll be the thing of, well, we’ll just keep flipping this for a couple more years at some point. Like, we’re past the point now where you can still be flipping and think that you’re going to time out and and hit Las Vegas at a perfect timing. Or maybe they won’t be there by 2028. Maybe they know it’s a 2029 thing or beyond. I mean, are Wilson or Curts or Butler or Dere are they next? Like Leo Dere is 18. He better not be flipped next. He hasn’t even arrived at the show yet. But my point is, where does this end? This was supposed to have already ended. And as I said on social media as soon as I saw this, Zebras just don’t change their stripes. This is not a situation where things are going to change overnight. Theel decide to keep these players and sign Mason Miller to a deal. Look, they kept Brent Rooker, signed him to a longer term contract, signed Lawrence Butler to, I want to say, was that another six-year deal. So, they have committed to some, but here are two players under team control. Could have just kept them, but instead decided to play the future route. And I’m not sure what this means for the next couple years. I said I really wasn’t going to make a lot of A’s videos in terms of the actual baseball team, but I don’t really think this is a baseball team type video. This is a team just continuing to do what they’ve always done. Kick the can down the road. Take known commodities and flip them for the hope of a future. Let me know what you think about all this in the comments section below. Thumbs up on this video. That greatly helps me, the video, and the channel. Don’t forget to hit that subscribe button. The San Diego Padres are turning a position of strength into a position of dominance.

Despite already having three All-Star relievers and a bullpen that easily leads MLB with a 2.97 ERA, the Padres swung a blockbuster deal for Athletics closer Mason Miller on Thursday ahead of the MLB trade deadline, the team announced on Thursday. ESPN’s Jeff Passan was the first to report the deal.

Starter J.P. Sears is also heading to the Padres. San Diego paid a steep price to acquire Miller and Sears, giving up shortstop Leodalis De Vries, who entered the 2025 season as a consensus top-20 prospect in the game. The Athletics are also receiving pitchers Braden Nett, Henry Báez and Eduarniel Nuñez in the deal.

De Vries, 18, is hitting .245/.357/.410 in 368 plate appearances in the minors this season. MLB Pipeline ranks him as the No. 3 prospect in baseball, likely to be No. 2 once Cincinnati Reds starter Chase Burns graduates.

Miller is under team control through the 2029 season, making this much more than just a rental.

  2. It’s the same old failed ‘Moneyball’ scheme: fill the roster with one-dimensional no-name players…if some actually become stars, trade them for fresh no-name prospects….look out, Vegas—get wise to the scam…

  3. Everyone needs to stop being so shortsighted. This move is clearly intended for 2055 when the A's will be playing their home games on the extension of the International Space Station.

  4. You didn’t mention that their team OPS is top 10 in MLB. While their team ERA is second to last… This trade deadline was always going to be about pitching. They picked up four pitcher – all of which can contribute this year or next year. Also they have Parker ready to start so someone needed to leave the rotation. Plus 2/3 other in the minors nearly ready to start…. I think the Padres over paid for Miller and Sears is a 3rd starter at best… This isn’t a Matt Chapman situation…

  5. Brodie, has there ever been a team that had all their players playing on non-arbitration years? Meaning paying all the players the MLB minimum?

  6. Tinfoil hat moment: teams are trading players with years of team control because they know there will be a full-season walkout in two years.

  7. they tried to steal 1 billion from bank rupt oakland for a free stadium. what do you expect. the union case will stop the vegas stadium. A's payroll 35 million this year. what do you expect. the fake money ball system never won them anything,

  8. This is obviously a great trade – THEY GOT THE #3 OVERALL PROSPECT IN ALL OF MLB!!! They even got three pitchers on top of that! Fans like me who actually watch every game are thrilled with this deal and thrilled with the future. I'm sorry to break it to you but it's going to be an absolute party in Vegas in 2028. By the way I was just waiting for this exact video from Brodie the moment I realized the A's would be sellers at the deadline a month or so ago

  9. Man, as a Padre fan this one hurt. De Vries was supposed to fill out our all SS outfield. Hope he becomes a superstar for you guys

  10. Padres Vice President of Amateur & International Scouting Chris Kemp continues being successful in scouting and developing international talent in recent years. Despite of trading DeVries, Kemp will look for more prospects to create a strong farm system

  11. With ya on this one for sure, Brodie… this one baffled me. Top 5 prospect or not, the kid is only 18 and in High A. We've seen plenty of those flame out and become nothing. I don't get this one at all. If you're the Athletics and you're thinking "well, Mason is just a closer"… then why not send him back down and stretch him out to be a starter again where he would have a lot more value overall. They had 4.5 years to do that, and at that point, you could sell him on the potential as a starter throwing 100 mph, or have teams interested in moving him back to the bullpen. I dunno, he was only a closer to keep him healthy. Just baffling, ESPECIALLY when already have young guys in Wilson, Muncy, Gelof, and Kurtz to go around the infield for the future. Good job, you just got an 18 year-old SS to replace… your 23 year All-Star SS?

  12. as a phillies fan thought this was the best trade of the deadline i think no team in their right mind would pass up trading a reliever (even one of the best) for the number 3 prospect

  13. The A’s trade a star for prospects. One of the prospects turns out to be good. They immediately trade him for prospects. One of the prospects turns out to be good. They immediately trade him for prospects. One of the prospects turns out to be good. They immediately . . .

  14. There’s a 90% probability that if the team actually moves to Vegas, there will not a single player on the team who was a part of it when they were in Oakland

  15. Maybe for flipping them for cheaper prospects? John Fisher, owner of the Oakland Athletics, has a reputation for trading valuable players and operating the team on a limited payroll, potentially impacting the team's competitiveness. This has been a recurring theme throughout his ownership, with critics pointing to instances where key players were traded for young prospects or cash considerations rather than retaining them.

Some reports suggest that these moves are driven by a desire to minimize expenses and maximize profits rather than prioritizing on-field success. This approach has faced criticism from fans, former players and even media personalities who see it as detrimental to the team's competitiveness and the overall fan experience.

  16. If you would've offer me a million dollars just to answer the question correctly, "what team jp sears played for prior to being traded?" I wouldn't have known he played for the A's. That's how much john fisher killed my love for the A's.

  17. Brodie, enough with the A's hate. Do you expect them to stop making moves and trying to improve the team? When your not winning you have to look to the future.
Since this channel has turned negative, why not make a video about the Giants trade deadline moves? Cheap ownership shipping their players off for peanuts in return just to avoid arbitration. Everyone wants to call the A's cheap, the Giants might be worse.

  18. Can you stop talking about the A’s for once like it’s an obsession bro I love everything on your page expect this. It’s constant negativity. The team left move on bro

  19. I suspect it's not about team control through to free agency but rather arbitration eligibility after 3 years in the Bigs (which I believe both Miller and Sears qualify for this off-season). I think the A's goal is to have a good young team on opening day 2028 in Vegas – don't much care about the 2026 and 2027 seasons in Sac. We'll see if the selling continues after they land in Sin City.

  20. I love this as a Padres fan. I’m also a Raiders fan so I believe that when the A’s get to Vegas they will have additional financial interest and good things will happen. It’s just too big of a market to put up with a losing team. The Raiders aren’t great or even good yet, but they are on the upswing and the dialogue is changing in sports media.

  21. I’m pretty sure everyone said the A’s won this trade.

Brodie….come on man. Ignoring the facts and making another “wahhh wahhh” video as a grown man is wild.

  22. Oakland boy living in San Diego here.

I'm not sure why anyone is at all surprised by this. More so, I'm surprised that anyone thought for a second that Fisher was gonna change his ways now that he got what he wanted and he's trying to get this team to Vegas.

Has anyone ever heard the same, "a zebra can't change its stripes"?

Having said that, I have no doubt that the Padres are gonna take care of these guys once they get down here.

  23. A leopard never changes its spots and this proves sll those people who said thar things will be different when they leave Oakland were wrong, this is who the Athletics are always have and always will be, LONG LIVE THE BALLERS!!!

  24. The Orphan A's snooker MLB yet again… 😒…As they did what everybody knew was coming, the A's dump a bunch of salary at the end of the year, with the net effect that they reduce their team payroll back to below what the league "demanded" that they spend in order to stay on MLB Welfare. They might be carrying some of Miller's salary, and I don't know all the details, but you know the ATHs wouldn't have made this deal if they weren't sucking money back out of it…Common sense is obviously lacking in the world of Baseball management…I actually feel good for both Miller and Sears in that they are no longer being wasted riding in the John Fishwrap Clowncar…
