so uhh…that wasn’t just some fever dream we all had? like, all that shit really happened???
I don’t think I could have drawn up a better trade deadline than what AJ had. Players need to perform still, but he plugged all of our problem areas and strengthened our strengths.
Good morning,
Who’s excited for Padres baseball?

After watching Drury join Slam Diego in his first game after the deadline in ‘22. These post-deadline first games have become so exciting to watch!
Yesterday was a blur. You know something is going to happen but you just don’t know exactly what. Happy it is over, the hype, the buzz, the rumors. It’s AJ Christmas in San Diego. The next anticipation is small things like lineup cards and final closing slots. Pumped to have AJ on my team, pumped to take advantage of these amazing years of Manny and Xander. Let’s do it for the OG San Diegians, for those with us and those who have passed, get on the boat, it’s a good time for a parade.
Who are we going to see? Here are the options and my thoughts:
Player | Notes
—|—
**Ramon Laureano** | Almost certainly starting in LF today.
**Ryan O’Hearn** | Very likely starting in either 1B or DH.
**Freddy “The Ferminator” “Lisan Al-Gaib” Fermin** | Not very likely, although if we bring in Mason Miller he will likely PH and take over near the end of the game.
**Mason Miller** | Depends on game flow, but not likely. They will probably want him to throw a bullpen with Neibla before throwing him out there, but it’s still a possibility.
The others are certainly not likely obviously (Cortez, Sears).
Should be a great game and the energy tonight is going to be fucking electric. I REALLY hope they let Miller pitch – just so he can get a taste of the energy he’s now surrounded by. I can’t imagine our fans not absolutely embracing this dude immediately. Same with Fermin and the rest.
I woke up today on an absolute cloud. All the chips are in baby full steam ahead
May the likes of Sears, Miller, O’Hearn, Fermin and Laureano discover the greatness of San Diego burritos
So are the new dudes expected to suit up today?
Is it 6:40 yet!?!
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m jacked to the tits! Trade deadline day is a holy day for padres fans and I’ll be chasing that high the next 364 days
Any good youtube videos/podcast I should watch about the Padres deadline moves?
A couple things I think should be pointed out and discussed a little about our offensive additions yesterday:
1. Ramon Laureano is hitting .305/.368/.563 with 10 HRs against RHP this year, while Gavin Sheets is hitting .242/.317/.449 with 14 HRs against them. I don’t think Laureano was brought here to platoon with Sheets in LF, nor should he. As much as I like Sheets, I think the best role for him at the moment is to be the first bat off the bench vs. RHP.
2. I’ve seen quite a bit of talk about how the lineup should be constructed. I think we’ve all accepted that Shildt likely is not going to change the Top 3 in the lineup, as they know Tatis enjoys hitting lead off and they value Arraez’s unique skill set in the 2 spot. Most of the discussion is about how the 4-7 in the lineup should be constructed, with Ryan O’Hearn and Ramon Laureano now joining Xander Bogearts and Jackson Merrill in that part of the order and Gavin Sheets presumably going to the bench.
For the sake of argument, here are the season numbers for all 4 hitters:
Jackson Merrill: .259/.318/.399/.717 with 7 HRs and 24 total XBHs
Xander Bogearts: .267/.339/.383/.723 with 7 HRs and 31 total XBHs
Ryan O’Hearn: .283/.374/.463/.837 with 13 HRs and 29 total XBHs
Ramon Laureano: .290/.355/.529/.884 with 15 HRs and 32 total XBHs
I won’t sit here and make any advocations as to who should bat where in the comment, but I believe numbers speak for themselves as to who should be up behind Manny.
Ohhhh boy here we go
New hat day for me, love this little detail on the Micah Johnson collab. KTF

SOON
I, for one, am ready for some San Diegan Baseball
I know people worry about the business model of just spending all of our prospect capital, but having Niebla on hand seems to make it so much more sustainable. Able to consistently buy low and sell high on pitching.
Just in your guys opinions, what do you think the chances are that miller gets successfully converted back to a starter?
While the system is thin after all those trades, there are still some very interesting prospects that could be valuable this time next year.
We all know Salas, but Mayfield and Mendez could both be top 100 guys if they keep this up. Cruz has crazy upside and guys like Rodriguez, Pena, and Haynes should be MLB ready.
Not to mention the players from the latest draft. If 2 or 3 of those guys flash then Preller should have all the tools needed to continue his history of wheeling and dealing.

Cardinals tonight
I wish AJ was able to dump Wandy’s salary
So who will be in the rotation when/if king and Cortes are healthy? And which pitchers will be on the roster?
Obviously AJ went nuclear when we got Soto but I feel like we were just really chasing prestige there.
I feel like he was really targeting things this deadline and went all in. Such a great time to be a fan.
Maldonado and brooks DFA’d and Wagner sent to el paso
Can’t wait till we pinch hit brooks for Maldy with bases loaded…
# OH WAIT

I hope someone comes up with a fantastic saying for JP Sears referencing the store.
I’m so excited for today’s lineup I couldn’t sleep
Flying down for my first game at petco since 2023 with my fiance who’s a cardinals fan.. should be a fun night lol
Pivetta on the mound, assuming Loreano and O Hearn will be in the line up tonight? Fermin probably needs a week or so before he’s ready to catch, might get a pinch hit appearance tonight tho.
All I know is the park is gonna be rocking and hyped I’m going tonight
I still cant believe we kept Salas thru all of that lol. I know De Vries was the shiny prospect but if Salas becomes a good catcher that can hit well…lets just say this team has been need that for a while 😅
Wife is a huge cardinals fan so we picked this weekend to come into town and catch the series. Totally forgot about AJ’s annual coke fest when booking the trip – can’t even explain how stoked I am to be there for all three games this weekend! Petco’s gonna be absolutely rocking tonight
I’m still confused why the Brewers traded an interesting (albeit super young) shortstop prospect along with Nestor Cortes for Lockridge, and on top of that they are paying down most of Cortes’s remaining salary. I’d get it if it was a salary dump but with them sending us cash in the deal it doesn’t seem that straightforward.
I just left San Diego earlier this week and saw that amazing Monday night game live and I person.
Thanks to yesterday I already want more and I’m contemplating another trip to SD or a visiting team. Def considering Seattle since it can’t be effected by weather.
I also get to see them here again on the south side but that is at the very end of the season
Holy cow it feels like it’s been a week since we played. So much has happened.
After having slept on it, I really, really like our deadline. Addressed all of our needs, got cost controlled players for the future, and besides De Vries, it felt that we did a quantity over quality approach.
Our farm still has some top level talent in Salas and Cruz (and others), and I know Preller and his scouting department is going to restock it within the next few years. This might be the best deadline Preller has ever had, a nice balance of win now and setting us up for the future.
I’ve never been more excited about a lineup release.
very normal a.j. preller deadline
