MLB LIVE🔴 Washington Nationals vs Milwaukee Brewers – Aug 1, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

with my partner Chris Singleton. I’m John Shami. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Milwaukee Brewers and the Washington Nationals. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. All right, just about ready for baseball and on the hill, Jake Irvin. What do you have on him? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club and coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. This is Bryce Terang. And that’s downstairs. And we’re off and rolling here in DC. [Music] The one swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. He’s got it. And there’s one away. Let’s take a look at the Brewers lineup. This is an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah. Sometimes things just aren’t going to click. And unfortunately, what happens is players press, they try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game. You’ve got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. Swinging a foul straight back. One down. Base is empty. Swing and that ball smashed on the line. Out number two, batty third, the designated hitter, William Contras. And now it’s William Contras. He is a talented player. His big brother Wilson has voiced that his little brother may end up being better than he is. That clips the corner. [Music] [Applause] [Music] ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the in it. Nobody left for Milwaukee and now the Nets get their first opportunity. There’s no score. Back after this on the show back here in Nationals Park and on the mound in this one, Brandon Woodruff. What do we need to know here about the right-hander? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. CJ Abrams, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. [Applause] Hit in the air, center field. Chorio under it and out number one on the grab. That is as we take a look at the Nationals lineup and a key factor for this club in that leadoff spot. CJ Abrams. Well, he’s an important part of this lineup for sure. I mean, there’s no doubt about it, Boo. It’s somebody that they try to feed off of. He does a lot of things, you know, very well up there at the plate. He’s got a presence about him and, you know, he’s a guy that you really kind of like to watch swing the bat. And first offering is fouled off. The wine to kick the pitch and a swing and a miss. He got away with one there, but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this. One out. Base is empty. And that one upstairs. Ball one. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count. One, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Right side. And foul ball. [Music] Foul ball still a one and two count. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. That one outside and the count now even up. [Applause] And a foul ball. He stays alive. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Worm Burner into the outfield for a knock. And after grinding through that at bat, he gets the best of him. Well, wore him down after an extended play appearance. It ends with a knock. At that point in bat for a hitter, when you’ve seen that many pitches, you’ve gotten a look, you fouled off pitches. So, the confidence level is extremely high. And it seems like when you go that deep into an at bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. Wood the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Come on. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and two. fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Music] That’s to third. Goes to second for one. What a double play that was. Inning over. First frame of the night behind us and it’s nothing nothing back in Washington DC. Top of the second now the Brewers clean up hitter Christian Yelich Irvin back to work and a strike on the outside edge one strike [Music] at a highf fly ball well struck way back there and out of here. Home run number 20 on the year and that gives them a lead. It’s one- nothing. When a guy’s got a real hard fast ball, you can’t overswing. All you’ve got to do is get the bathe head to the spot. If you do, he supplies the power and you’ll get to jog around the bases like he did right there. Andrew Vaughn now swings through that one for strike one. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the top of the second. strike delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Matthew Ross behind the plate. Pitchers on fire. Yeah, pitchers that work side to side effectively love being on the mound with Ross calling balls and strikes, but if you can command your stuff on the outer edges of the strike zone, he will reward you. How much were you aware of the umpire scouting report or even who was going to be umpiring? Not a whole lot. I mean, there were a couple of umpires that weren’t real good, but outside of that, you just kind of went into the game, especially back when I was playing. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. And in foul ground, he pulls it down. One out. 36 right fielder Isaac Collins. Isaac Collins up now for the Brewers. [Applause] And the first pitch misses in the dirt. [Applause] Check swing on a 10. Appeal to third. And he went around according to Daryl Parker. 1-1 now. Fouled off left side. [Music] One down. Base is empty. On the ground to short, Abrams now the throw to first on the run. Got him. Nice play. I love how guys at this level are able to slow the game down whether it’s in the batters box or on defense. And right there, that was a good job of knowing just how much time he had. We talk about that internal clock. He was able to gather himself, get a good grip, and make an accurate throw across the diamond. [Applause] In the air, right side of the infield, Garcia makes the grab and that is that. Christian Yelich crushes this one for the Brewers. It’s now one- nothing. You’re dialed into the show. Bottom half of inning number two leading off Josh Bellated hitter Josh Bell. That’s a bullet but it goes foul. Here comes the 01. Little chopper rolls. Foul. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another. [Music] Woodrift deals. That misses the zone and the count is one and two. [Music] Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. That one 95 to finish him off. Batting fifth. Here’s Nathaniel. Nathaniel. No. [Applause] Just missed. [Music] next offering is fouled back instead of let the hitter get his arms extended. Tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Swinging a ground ball and it goes just foul [Music] outside low. Two balls, two strikes. That one ripped. Ranging back. He can’t squeeze it and it drops in. Foul. fouls it back with two strikes. Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Strike three and that’s two to roll. Well, definitely a borderline pitch right there. And he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. You know, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter, but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. Here’s the center fielder, Alex Call. First pitch misses. One and0. [Music] Two down. Doan. Foul ball. [Music] Just missed. Two balls, one strike. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Two outs. Base is empty. Ground ball up the middle. fires to first on the run in time. Got him. And that’ll do it. Three up, three down for Washington. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. Top half of the third inning. But now for Milwaukee, Joseph Ortiz. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. The hitting’s going to come around. He’s going to figure it out. But right now, his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Call on the move to the gap. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and there’s one down. Batting ninth catcher Eric Hos. Next to hit Eric Hos. Hos in his fourth year hitting ninth in today’s lineup and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2011. Just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. The 1-1 is fouled off the middle. It’s through for a hit. So, the one out hit turns the lineup over. Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. She didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Bryce Terraang digs in now. He’s 0 for one. Check swing called strike. And there’s a foul ball. [Applause] That one is upstairs. Well, he missed badly with that 02 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Got him looking. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Oh, you know that’s got to be very frustrating for this guy. He knows the strike zone extremely well. And you know what? Good hitters are not going to compromise. He’ll take that punch out, but ultimately stick with his plan and have more success than anything else. Jackson Chorio up now for the Brewers. Tap foul at the plate. Swing and a pop up. Foul territory for the catcher. Adams makes the grab and that’ll do it. Milwaukee leaves one, but they’re on top one- nothing. Set for the bottom of the third. And now here’s the speed threat outfielder Jayen Ly. Jayen Lyle just off the inside edge. [Applause] And another ball. [Applause] way outside and the count is three and one. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Yell on the move. One down. batting eight third baseman Paul D. Young. Now it’s Paul D. Young up to the plate. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Swing it a miss. Hit a count. One and two. Two. [Music] This to third. Terra throws to first in time. batting ninth. Catcher Riley Adams. Here’s the catcher, Riley Adams. swing and a high-fly ball down the right field line. Dives. What a play. One of the most fun and exciting things you can do as an outfielder. You lay out, you make a diving catch, and you end the inning. That gets the team fired up in the dugout. Start of the 40. And now here is William Contr. That’s inside. That’s down and in. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Flying drive and that’s a base hit out into center field. Had a good start to the inning. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Here comes Christian Yelich. He’s already homerred here in this one. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Next offering is fouled back. Contras aboard here at first with nobody out. Got him. And one gone. Take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty similar in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Next for Milwaukee, Andrew Vaughn. First time up was a pop out. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one, man. At first, one away. And that one cutting but missing down low. Swinging a foul straight back. But you want Look out. And it hit him. Up next for Milwaukeiel down for the Bruins. Grounded out to short in his first trip. [Applause] out in front with the swing and that is strike one. This guy absolutely flies. The defense wants to turn two, but they’ve got to get a ball they can do it with. Make sure you get the first out before you try to rush and get two and end up with nothing. Next pitch is downstairs. Way to lay off that pitch down. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. And a swing to miss. Got it. and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. And I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location. Those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know what happens. Now it’s the second baseman. Late swing fouled off. Foul ball there. That to right. lunges for it but can’t make the catch. Safe at home and the runner scores from second and they take a two-run lead. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. You got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. And now the shorts stop, Joseph Ortiz. A short stop takes a ball [Applause] and the one and that is out of play. [Applause] Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. Runner from third comes across. It’s an RBI single. It’s three zip. Picks himself up an RBI. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Eric Hos up now for the Brewers. There’s the strike. [Music] [Applause] Right through there for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. That one misses. Going to count one and two. Activity in the Washington bullpen. Andre Lara looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Parker the left-hander also throwing. First and second, two down. Top half of inning number four. Swaying a miss and he struck him out. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. So, two runs on three hits, no errors, but two are left stranded. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Brewers three and the Nationals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit after scoring runs. This is where you’re looking for that shut down inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats and takes low for ball one. Go straight. [Applause] Swings through that one out in front that time. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action outside with a breaking ball. The two is high. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball, something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, that’s a really good take right there. And that’s just mentally prepared knowing that if it’s not on the T, you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with. Not easy to lay off, but he did an excellent job in that plate appearance. Wood in the box now. No balls in a strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Pitch misses. And that is ball one. One ball, one strike. Rudder at first with no outs here. outside low now. Two and two. [Applause] Takes a swing. Appeal to third. Ring him up, says Daryl Parker. That’s a strike out. And now it’s Luis Garcia. Second baseman. Luis Garcia. Let’s go DC. Runner takes off. Pitch misses. Safe in second. And that was not close. When your catcher is not a great thrower, you have to do a better job of controlling the running game. And that’s throwing over. That’s stepping off. Doing whatever you can to try to keep that base Steeler’s rhythm off. Well, they weren’t able to do it right there. They’re going to have to make some type of adjustment. Our players are going to be running all game. Man at second. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. And there are two outs. Now that designated hitter, Josh Bell. Here’s Josh Bell. His first at bat was a strikeout. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Here’s the pitch. Runner breaks for third. That’s in for a strike for the third. Save. two outs. Taps softly to the right side and he has thrown four shut out innings. So, one left for Washington. They trail in this one three nothing. And we’re back. We go to the top of the fifth. Here’s the leadoff man for the Brewers. Bryce Terraang. Irvin back to work. That misses and that’s ball one. [Music] And that one a little bit high. [Music] High in the air out to right. Lyall under it. Makes the catch for the out. Jacksonio up now. He became the fifth youngest player to start on opening day in the divisional era. Singy, can you name the others? Well, Ken Griffy Jr. seems like a good guess for this one. That’s right. I’ll give you the others. Adrien Beltree and Robin Y. Got it. Ya must be on that list twice because he was only 18 when he made his debut. Exactly. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Contrarus in the box again takes the strike. [Music] Irvin checks the runner. Chorio back in on a dive. Runner to go. Pitch in for a strife. Throw to second. Save Sigy. He definitely showed off the wheels there. Yeah, and it turned out to be a bang bang play. Statcast gives us the data. And that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed. Close one. Doesn’t get the call and the count. One and two. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Chases that one out of the zone. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. And now it’ll be Christian Yelich. He’s already homered in this game. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Runner at second. Two down. And we’re in the top of the fifth. There’s the strike. Ripped on the ground. A second. sends it to first and that is the inning. Brewers strand one but they lead it three nothing back here in Nationals Park ready to go for the last half of the inning. Nathaniel Low up to Nathaniel Low. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Well, these gnats just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. That’s inside and it’s one and two. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Off the mark there. The countdown two and two. [Applause] Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. Here’s a two- two. Fights it off. You’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Pulls it in for the out. One up, one down. Well, I think the key, I mean, if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. And first off is fouled off. The Nationals trailing by three last half of inning number five. Shortened a bunt and missed it and it’s 0 and two. Oh, tried to bunt for a hit right there and you can tell he’s trying to get something anything going offensively. Swings through that and it’s a strikeout. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Don Ly digging in for the Nationals. Fly to left his first time. Yeah, at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Chorio going back on this one. Makes the play and it’s out number three. Now pitching for now for the Nationals, Andre Lara. He’s pitching on two days rest. Andre Lara. Andrew Vaughn up for the Brewers. First baseman Andrew Vaughn right through there for a strike. Laura a 64 righty. He features a two seam fast a slider and he works in a change up and a foul ball. And down on strikes he goes. And now one away. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count just to pour it back. Collins now in the box. Comes up empty with a swing there. Action in the pen down there. Luis Garcia looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez out towards right center field. Lyle makes the play. Two away now. Now batting second base Caleb Durban. Here’s the second baseman. fought off foul. Two down to on the ground to third. He gets there with the slide. Fires to first. They get the out and that’ll do it. Three up, three down that time. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the six. It’s the Brewers three and the Nationals nothing. Back in Washington DC and the batter now Paul D. Third baseman Paul Tang swinging a foul out of play. Next offering in there for a strike. That is strike two. Right side Collins. makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting the catcher Riley. And now the catcher comes up to hit Riley Adams. And remember he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up. And that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. The guy’s going this good. He’s retired seven in a row. You got to step out of the box. Fake bunt. Do something to break it up. [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the six. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. Abrams the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. And it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there on the ground. In time Devon inning over and the Nationals gone in order. Still down three nothing. We go to the top of the seventh and now Joseph Ortiz Ortiz. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list and first offering is fouled off and a foul ball. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him and he swings and lifts one to deep center field going back. Makes the catch up against the wall. Thought that was a no doubt like the wind was holding that in this ballpark. Eric Hos will hit next. One for two. Hugan, the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. And ball one. ball. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Just off the outside edge. And that’s ball three. And it’s fouled away. [Music] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch to the right side. Garcia and there are two outs. Now batting third baseman Bryce Terra. Two down. Base is empty. Bryce Terang now at the plate 0 for three with two fly outs and a strikeout. That’s a hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Now batting center fielder. Next for the Brewers, Jackson Chorio. Move to first. He’s safe. That one misses one and0. One and one. swings through that one. Terrain off of first with two away. Struck him out looking a controversial cold strike. Three to end the inning. Milwaukee leaves one, but they lead it three nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the seventh and now it’s going to be James Wood. This kid picked up in a trade. A lot was offered and given to get him, but he’s got a real high ceiling. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Movement in the bullpen. Nick Mirs getting loose out there. Aribe also throwing. [Music] Here’s the O2. Now one missed [Applause] Popped up to the left into foul ground. And that’s a foul ball. That’s ripped to right down the line. Collins pulls that one down and there’s one away. Now batting second baseman Luis Garcia. Luis Garcia getting ready to hit. 0 for two in this one. just missed. The Brewers leading by three here in the bottom of the seventh. Late swing fouled to the left. [Music] There’s a strike. one and two and down on strikes. So he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. I can’t argue with that one. And clearly he was looking for something else. Anything but the breaking ball. It’s a great pitch to hit right there if you’re looking for it. And kind of a gift in a two- strike count, but sometimes you just get fooled and you got to tip your cap. And there’s a foul ball. Swings through that one for strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. And that chance handled. Gets it to first. Nats go down one, two, three. Nothing doing for Washington. They trail it here. Three nothing. Now pitching on pitch now for the Nationals. Luis Garcia. He’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season. And that’s not where you want to be at all. So we’ll see how he does here. Here’s the Brewers. William Contrus, one for three. All right. Swing and a miss. One. He’s a bullpen arm that keeps the ball in the ballpark, but obviously out of the bullpen, you’re looking to limit home runs. Yeah. And that’s why he’s such a high leverage arm. Just doesn’t matter for him. He looks at attacking the zone and attacking hitters regardless of the situation. And that one ripped to left. Dives, but it falls. Could be extra bases. Safe at second with a leadoff double. Now batting left fielder Christian Nellich. And now it’s Christian Yelich. He launched the solo shot back in the second inning of this one. Yeah, that was big for these guys early on. definitely helped him get off onto the right foot. And that is in there for a strike. I believe that’s the split activity in the bullpen. Cole Henry up and loosening in the pen. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Squeezes it. Grounder tags at second and he makes it up to third with one away. Now batting the first baseman, Andrew Vaughn. So, a man aboard. And here’s the first baseman, Andrew Vaughn. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. And first off is fouled off. just missed on the ground right side. Steps on first for the out. Now batting right fielder Isaac Collins. Isaac Collins up now for the Brewers. 0 for three in this one. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Let’s go. That’s in there. Back door with the breaking blood. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Two outs and a runner at third and we’re in the top of the eighth. Good eye right there. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Go, kid. sets him down looking. Couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball at the knees. A double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Brewers three and the Nationals nothing. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Nick Mir. now pitching for left-handed batter at the plate. And he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. And now the first base, Nathaniel Low. First baseman, Nathaniel. Oh, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. Activity in the bullpen for the Brewers. Trevor McIll, the closer of the staff, is getting loose to finish this one off. Next pitch is outside. Two balls. No straight. swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Collins makes the play and there’s one down. Now batting the center fielder Alex next to hit for the Nats. Alex call. That one misses in the dirt. The Nets trailing by three here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Up and in. And the count now two nothing. [Music] That one down the line. Terang jump throw across his body and very nicely done for the out. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks. partner. Two outs, space is empty. And now the right fielder, Dalen Lyall. And that one fouled off. There’s a swing in a miss. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Hit on the ground to the right side and that’s just foul. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field and they have their first hit since the first inning. really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. At the plate, Paul Young. That one catches the corner for a strike. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. Two outs. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Really good slider. He’s up there just hoping that it ends up off the plate away. Come on, let’s go. Ly the runner at first with two gone. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s the inning. Back now. And on the mound, the closer Kyle Finan, he doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing the work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the ball. Now it’s the second base for the Brewers. Second base, Caleb Durban. [Applause] right through there for a strike. Action in the pen down there. Andrew Chaffen, the left-hander, up and throwing. [Applause] Pulls that one foul. The O2 and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Applause] And a swing to miss. Down on strikes. And a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there, he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. [Applause] Foul ball there. Finnegan in his sixth season. He features a four seam fast ball, a splitter, and he works in a slider. [Applause] The shorts stop takes a ball. Base is empty, one away. You’re in the top of the ninth. [Applause] So a foul ball makes it one and two. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Chopped back up the middle over to low. Two up, two down. Two down, base is empty. And here’s the catcher, Eric Hos. [Applause] on the ground to third. The Young throws to first in time and the inning is over. Offense held in check there and 912 scheduled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Brewers three and the Nationals nothing. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Trevor McIll. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. Now here is Riley Adams. [Applause] First pitch and he just misses. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Now, one out to right. Collins sizes this one up, makes the grab. One down. Up next for the Nationals. Short stop. He’s two outs away for CJ Abrams now. [Applause] Yeah, big swing and a miss. Oh, and one that misses. And now it’s even one and one. had a breaking ball. Misses outside. [Applause] Gets the call and out to two. Stays alive. The Brewers trying to close out a three-run lead. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Three balls. Two strike outside and that is ball four. Oh, you know this guy wants to swing it, but he’s showing some good patience in this one. It’s the second time he’s taken ball four here in the bottom of the ninth. One out. James Wood digging in for the Nationals. You talk about the power and the speed together. Well, we knew he was going to be a stud just coming up, making his way through the minor leagues and quickly at this level. An impact player. There’s the strike. Oh, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. [Applause] just off the inside corner at a count one and two. Abrams stands at first with one out. That misses the zone and it’s two and two. [Music] That’s towards center. Chorio makes the grab. Two down. Now batting second baseman Luis Garcia. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Up now for Washington, Luis Garcia as the Nationals are down to their final out. [Applause] Just off the outside edge, ball one. The Brewers leading by three here. The last half of inning number nine. Well, dude, Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. They stopped the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Now batting and now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell 0 for three with two ground outs and a strike out. And this one squirts away from the catcher. And the runners will move up. No trouble moving up to second on that play with the ball getting that far away from the catcher. Nice job to take advantage of the wild pitch. [Applause] Two outs, two in scoring position. Fast ball for a strike. And the count one and one. And that’s fouled off. [Applause] This could end it. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Start of a new month is a great chance to hit the reset button. Whether you’re coming in hot or cold, getting that win today is a great feeling to continue through the rest of the month. The shut out in this one. Three nothing. Our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
