REKAP: ⚾️ Chicago Cubs 1-0 win over Baltimore Orioles. ‘That was high drama!’

Welcome into the recap of the Cubs high drama one- nothing victory over the Baltimore Orioles in game one of a three-game series Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field. I’m David Kaplan. It’s brought to you by our great partners at Winrust. They are the exclusive home of Cubs Checking. And then your bullpen was outstanding today. Cubs get the victory over a gutty, depleted Baltimore Orioles team that saw a bunch of their guys traded away at the deadline over the last couple of days. Let’s get right into this. It’s also brought to you by our great partners at Tasty Trade. You’re seeing that all over Wrigley. Tasty Trade Crypto, stocks, options, whatever you trade, Tasty Trade is the platform for you. tastyrade.com/offer and sign up for your own account. I’ve got one. You should, too. All right. Kate Horton now leads Major League Baseball in minimum five innings per start shutout baseball. He’s done it six times since June 1. Six. That’s the most of any pitcher in baseball. And we’re learning more about the trade deadline. He was one of the guys that they were demanding be a trade for McKenzie Gore and a trade for Joe Ryan. And the Cubs said no, not when he and Matt Shaw and Owen Casey and Jackson Wiggins have to be in deals. I still think they should have done more at the deadline by getting their bullpen right, but they chose not to. So now you got to go with what you’ve got. Let’s get right into the stats from today’s ball game. Here’s how this thing went down. In the second inning, Carson Kelly a hit. PCA a double and then Ian Hap delivers a sacrifice fly. Cubs get a run. They’re up one- nothing. They had opportunities. They had Matt Shaw leadoff double. Can’t get him in. They had men in scoring position and could not find a way to add on. And that meant the bullpen had to be magnificent and they were today. Let’s go to our Hooters winging it. Starting pitching matchup. It was Rogers for the Baltimore Orioles. He takes a loss. He’s 4-2. He went eight innings, four hits, one run. It’s earned eight Ks and didn’t walk a man. His RA is 144 on the season. This dude’s a really, really good pitcher. And then for the Chicago Cubs, they’re trying to manage Cade Horton’s innings. That is a wise decision by Jed Hoyer and company and Craig Councel because he’s never thrown this many innings and every pitch he throws now is going to be high leverage. That’s just a fact because your team is battling to go to the postseason. Kate Horton five innings he got the win. Five and three. He get went two hits, no runs, three Ks, three walks. That’s why he only was able to get through five. And then Theelbar an inning of no run baseball. Kitridge, who just came over from Baltimore, an inning of two strikeout baseball, no runs. Brad Keller, two strikeouts, a walk, no runs. And Daniel Palencia gave up one hit, a double with two outs, and then got a fly ball. I thought it was gone. Right to the wall. Ian Hap made the catch in left field. Ball game over. That is save 15 for Daniel Palencia. Cubs win. Who am I giving the player of the game to? I’m going to give it to Ian Hap because how many times did we watch in Milwaukee the Brewers would come up with sack flies when they had men at third and less than two outs and the Cubs in one game three times got none. Ian Hap delivered. There’s your game-winning hit, your game-winning RBI. Cubs win. Ian Hap is our apt player of the game. Next up, it’s another date with the Orioles on Saturday afternoon. It’s our Studio 41 look ahead. Saturday afternoon 120 Studio 41 home remodeling showroom. I use them. You should too. They are the gold standard in the industry. 13 Chicago area locations. You get Baltimore tomorrow. You get Baltimore on Sunday. Another 120 game. Just take them one at a time, man. Wake up in the morning, grab a cup of coffee, and find a way to win another baseball game. Cubs win. Just keep stacking W’s. Cubs win, baby. Take that.

The Chicago Cubs got another high drama win, this time over the depleted Baltimore Orioles, who traded several players yesterday at the deadline. Cade Horton tossed 5 scoreless innings as the Cubs begin the process of managing his workload and then the bullpen shut it down. In the 9th, Daniel Palencia nearly gave up a HR, but Ian Happ was there in left to seal the W after recording the games only RBI. Palencia gets save #15 and Kap gives player of the game honors to Happ, who many fans have been on, especially in that Milwaukee series. The offense continues to struggle, but just keep finding a way to stack Ws.

Take That!

  1. Kap that was a great game and win for the cubs. Especially with the wind blowing in it was a definitely a pitching day today. Horton did a good job he just needs to not walk a lot of batters. He walked too many today but with the conditions he got away with it. He can be definitely your 4th or 5th starter if he keeps his walk rate down for the rest of the season. Let's wake up tomorrow morning kap grab a cup of coffee ☕️ and find a way to win a damn baseball game. Take that

  2. Horton will be an anchor of the rotation for 10 years, so the Cubs were right to make him untouchable. Even this season as a rookie, he'll take the ball every 5th game in a playoff race and be your number 3 starter in any playoff series. It would have been malpractice to trade him for anything other than an elite, young pitcher like Skenes or Crochet.

  3. Are they mad? Absolutely no chance you trade Cade. Hey Mr. Ricketts, this is why you need to spend money in free agency. If you want to acquire a major league veteran in a trade, the other team wants something in return.

  4. You can talk about the great offense you want, but we suck against the left-handed pitchers. What was the point of trading for Castro if he wasn't going to play against left-handed pitchers.

  5. I’m glad to see the kap man in a better mood because man you were hot this morning i listen to you & big Jay hoodie and man you were hot you called Moises ballesterros fat that’s not nice Kap take that

  6. We are all bitching no starting pitchers worth a damn at trade deadline and Horton came out today as if to say "Chill I got this" we still could use 2 more starters perhaps late season trade. Good game, this is how most playoff games will be tight pitching low scoring

  7. Horton was ok but had 3 walks and some hard hit balls after the Orioles traded their major league team away.

Dansby needs to go back to 8th in the lineup, he’s been brutal

Also after hearing the hefty demands from the other organizations about what they wanted can we stop just assuming Jed wasn’t trying for more pitchers? They didn’t just want prospects, they wanted our major league rookies!

  8. Quit Sucking Happs dick Kap! Player of the game for a sac fly & a hard line out over Horton or the Bullpen shutout?? You're better than that. No consolation trophies here bruh

  9. Sucks that Jed couldn't trade for a starter, but I wouldn't trade Horton or Shaw now, either. The issue is that they're no longer prospects, they're pros. Horton looks like he has the stuff and the grit to be a starter for years. And for all of Shaw's troubles at the plate, his defense at the hot corner has been stellar. He is 10th on the Cubs in WAR (1.6), between Suzuki (1.7) and Shota (1.4). The Cubs play great defense, and that shows up every day – on days like today. I could understand trading Cassie or Alcantara or Wiggins, but Horton and Shaw are good young professionals who are inexpensive and under team control for years. That would've been too rich to trade them.

  10. Solid win . A little concerned about Danny P , he gave up double and high deep fly ball . Hopefully he is ok . Dansby is in a slump he’s needs a day off . Let’s get another one tomorrow. Hell NOOOO , Cade , Caissie ,Wiggins & Shaw for 1 pitcher no way .

  11. I'm ok, not mortgaging the entire ball club for a chance…. esp when Kyle Tucker doesn't seem to be all in. Much less the other big league hitters in the lineup with very few competitive at bats. Dansby freaking Swanson is rarely competitive ath the plate. Seya is in a huge hole. Bush is in love with the first pitch. Happ dissappears for weeks.

  12. Put this man into proper perspective, I would like to see us get a gritty 1-0 win over Milwaukee or Houston. We should’ve put up a lot more runs than just 1 vs. a depleted Orioles team. I’m not all that impressed, sorry.

  13. Yes, KAP, a win over a, “gutty, depleted,” LAST PLACE AL East team who used one pitcher who out-pitched the rotation and pen, five total Cubs pitchers, striking out eight Cubs, walking zero, giving up four hits and 1 earned run; whereas Cubs suck out again walking four. KAP, do you really think the Cubs can make the playoffs when your top hitters go a combined 0-16 and walk 4? Cubs are finished. Thanks, Jed, for nothing. It was fun today to listen to the paid shills who work for Marquee try to say anything positive about the nothing burger Jed served up yesterday. That was pitiful, and thank God Ryne didn’t have to see it.

  14. Why the hell would you trade Horton in ANY scenario !!!!
That’s fucking stupid for anyone to bring that up. He’s a top 10 first rd pick, trading him for Gore is like robbing Peter to pay Paul…..

  15. Ian Happ sac fly was barely deep enough and more times than not with a decent throw the runner is out at home easily. Better than a strikeout or ground ball but he backally lucked out with that sac fly. The player of the game for the cubs was the wind blowing in

  16. Horton contribution makes GM’s hold back moving prospects at the deadline… wish they did get more pitching, but losing a top prospect for a shitty pitcher kinda stings… always tried to justify the Cease trade for Quintana in my mind (at least they won 2017 NLDS)

  17. Ian Happ??? Then give it to Tyler O'Neil for his piss poor throw on what should have been an easy out at home. Ian Happ? Really? The freakin' second basemen could have almost caught that ball. That was an epic fail by Happ, just happened to turn out well.
