🔴LIVE 🔴Arizona Diamondbacks VS Oakland Athletics / August 1st /Baseball Envivo/MLB the show 25
go in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks going up against the Athletics. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. So, almost ready to get underway. Towing the slab in today’s game, Jeffrey Springs. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Corbin Carroll leading things off and takes a strike. swings through that one for strike two. The O2. That one just misses and down on strikes and that’s the first out. Here’s Catel Marte. Marte and first offering is fouled off. Springs goes 6′ 3 in 220 lbs. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. Just missed. One out. Base is empty. fights that one away. Still one and two. And a good eye there. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. One down, base is empty. Gets a piece and stays alive. Out to center. All right, here we go. Butler makes the grab and there’s two down now. The Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavell. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris. Yeah, Booan. That can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now. And that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of. Peraldo Purdomo stands in now and watches strike one. Two outs. Base is empty. That’s in there. And that’s strike two. I understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast ball, but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone. Now you’re in a tough spot. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking and good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Diamondbacks down quickly and the A’s will get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here with my pal Singi getting the nod in this one. Ryan Nelson. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this, he’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Lawrence Butler, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. Come on, Lawrence. splits the plate. Two balls in a strike. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. Come on. The next offering misses and now it’s filled up. Three and two. Left hand batter waits on the outside corner. Got him looking. It’s a strike out, but they’ll be in good shape if they make their outs as difficult as that one. Those grinding abs take a toll on a pitcher as the game goes on. Now it’s the rookie first baseman, Nick Curts. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Come on, Nick. You can do this. There’s the strike. in the air out towards right center. Carol sizing this one up. That’s out number two. And time now to check out the A’s lineup and probably their most productive player so far this year. Nick Curts and Boo, he’s their team leader in home runs. So, you know, the pitchers on that other side, man, they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting. You know, he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop. It’s not fluky at all. He can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly. So, watch out when he steps in. Brent Rooker in the box now. No balls in a strike. And now it’s even up. One strike baby. Swinging a drive deep right field. That one back there. Out of here. He’s up to three home runs in the series. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. That’s just a great feeling as a hitter. You let the ball travel, tracked it pretty nicely. He’s almost beat there, but he gets the bat head in time and it’s true enough to stay fair. I mean, that’s a good feeling when you can hit an opposite field home run and he did it right there. And now a chance for Shay Langalers and first off is fouled off. and that clips the inside corner. Cold night tonight, Boo. And that’s a pretty firm fast ball right there. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they creeping into my mind right now. Two down. Nobody on. And that’s in the dirt. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. That’s a little bit low. Wow. This guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Two outs. goes down looking. The A’s strike first as the A’s are on top. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. New inning getting started. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Diamondbacks, AU Heno Suarez. Oh, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip. And the matchup is very favorable. Springs back to work and a strike on the outside edge. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Next pitch is outside. I don’t know how you take that one after the called strike on the corner. Just a little bit off the edge. Jeffrey stays alive. Foul ball still a one and two count. That was a nice bid right there to try to tie up this ball game. Just couldn’t keep it from bending. Foul. He looked locked in on that swing. Pitcher better be careful with him right now. That misses and the count is two and two. That’s down and in. Foul ball and it remains a full count. That’s a hit. So he gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Solid swing from start to end on time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension and he met it out front for the line drive knock. Here’s Guriel that just misses. Ball one. Let’s go. Bring him home. Swinging a foul straight back. Next offering is fouled back. Sit him down. Swinging a highf fly ball out there towards left field. And there’s one away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Now up next for Arizona, Adrien DelCastillo. Ruer takes off. Swing and a miss. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. Well, we all know this team is struggling right now and sometimes you just got to do something different to generate some offense. A little more aggressive right there to put the pressure on the opponent. We’ll see if it pays off on the scoreboard for this team. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Now one missed. Tying run in scoring position here in the top of the second. Let’s go green to go, baby. Let’s go. Line to left and that’s just foul. Just a matter of inches from picking up an RBI base hit and maybe a double in the process. That was barely foul. Punch him out. Man at second in the dirt back to work. 3-2 now. Battling here as he fouls it away. Here comes a 3-2. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up in the air left field down the line and that’ll fall for a base hit into third now. So runners at the corners and one out. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Runners at the corners here. One away. And now the first baseman, Tristan English, way high there. And that’s ball one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Suarez on third. Del Castillo over at first with one away. That clips the zone. And that’s strike one. late on that fast ball. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Pitch misses there and it’s two and two. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with a sweeper. Bla1 Alexander in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. First and third, one down. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Two on, one out. And that’ll load the bases. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and walked the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast next to hit for Arizona. Bla1 Alexander. Golden opportunity right here out to short. Nice stop from his backside. Oh, you hate to make mistakes with base runners, whether it’s giving up a home run or making an error like that. And it’s costly. Two runs come around to score and sometimes that defense can just tighten up a little bit, get too excited rather than just settling in and making the play. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Jorge Barrosa. Foul ball there. up the middle, lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw and everyone’s safe. The bases are loaded now. Batting rightiel Corbin Carroll. Back to the top of the lineup. This is Corbin Carroll. Struck out swinging his first time and fouled off. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate inside. Almost got him. One out, base is full. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. Came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got them up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. Marte up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. There’s a strike. One ball, one strike. Boo, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. But you want started to swing, held up. in the air right field. Base hit. One run is in. The second run scores and they lead by three. Now batting short stop. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Now, up next for Arizona, Heraldo Peromo. His first at bat was a strike out. And a strike. Well, they’ve been able to score four runs off of him in this inning. And this is where you want to just max out. Get as much as you can. Give him one of those tough innings where it’s going to be hard for him to recover in the next one. That one’s in there and it’s nothing in two. Very well executed change up right there. If he can command the fast ball consistently, that’s going to be an important pitch in terms of him turning this outing around. Barrosa at third. Marte on first with two down. The shorts stop takes a ball. straight. Fouls it off. Still one and two. And there’s a ball. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taking at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going and that’s downstairs. Three and two now. Au Heno Suarez waiting to hit for the Dbacks. Ninth pitch of the at bat due next. in the air left field and a base hit knocks in a run now. A long throw home headed for the plate and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning, but nine batters hit in the inning. Five come around to score. Now to the bottom of the second, it’s the Diamondbacks five and the A’s won. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the second. Here’s the left fielder, Tyler Sodro. Soder, first pitch and he just misses. Baby the other way and foul ball and that one fouled off. Ripped to short tosses to first. One up, one down. Batting six, third base Miguel. Here’s Miguel and Duhar Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. just missed. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Batting seven. Here’s the rookie right fielder, Carlos Cortez. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it falls and out to a board. Two consecutive base hits for this team. Really nice job staying inside with his hands to fight off that pitch. Man, that cutter was bearing in on him, but he found a way to stay with his approach. Didn’t spin off it and he hit it pretty well. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. And the batter now, Matt Schuman. Runners at first and second with one gone. Bottom half of inning number two. Fast ball for a strike. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. in the air right side of the infield and the infield fly is called batting ninth the short stop Daryl Hern so first and second with two outs Daryl Hern getting ready to hit And he swings and misses at the initial offering. And strike two. Oh, two. to go, baby. Let’s go to the right side and it goes just foul and a foul ball. He stays alive. The shorts stop takes a ball. Hey, you got this. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck and it looks like trouble. One run is in. Coming home. He’ll score. Two runs are in. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. Fast ball pretty much middle middle. And that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So, no surprise he put a great swing on it. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Little chopper rolls. Foul. Rudder at second. Two down. Swang and a miss. Struck him out. That ends the inning and they limit the damage, but they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s now 53. All set for the start of the now. Here’s the cleanup hitter for Arizona, Au Heno Suarez. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Next offering is in for a strike. Breaking ball misses down and away. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch foul ball left side. He’ll see another swing and a highf fly ball left field. Sodestrom under it calls it in and there’s one away. Now batting left fielder Lordis Goreel Jr. And it’s Lordis Goreiel Jr. fly to left his first time. Right through there for a strike. just missed one on the ground to the left. Hern slings to first in time. Now batting catcher Adrien Del Castillo. Two outs, base is empty. Next to hit for Arizona, Adrien Del Castillo singled and scored his first time. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Now batting the first base Tristan English. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Tristan English. He walked and came around to score his first time up. Pitch misses outside and it’s one and0. Just missed. missed with a change up. Three and one. Del Castillo off of first with two away. So now two on and two outs. Pitch count’s getting up there now. And not saying that’s the reason for this walk, but this is the point in the game when every sign of wavering starts to get everyone’s attention. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Jeffrey Springs done for the night. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. And we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Number 50. He’s pitching on two days rest. First and second, two outs. Now the third baseman, Bla1 Alexander a little out front there as he swings through it. Let’s go and go, baby. Let’s go. And a foul ball. Come on, punch him out. Foul ball. Still 0 and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. And ball one. First and second, two down. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. swings through it for the K. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. No runs, a hit, two left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Diamondbacks five and the A’s three. Bottom of the inning now the number two hitter Nick Kurt number 16 that clips the inside corner for a strike. You know these athletics doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. And here’s a stat for you Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mount. Next one is off the play and now it’s even one and one to the right side. English steps on the bag and a quick out number one. Now batting designated hitter Brent Brent Rooker the next to hit. He’s already homered in this game. And that is in for a strike. One strike. One more time. bounced to the right and that chance handled. English takes it himself and a couple of quick outs. Now batting catcher Shay Langalers. Two down, base is empty. And next will be the cleanup hitter. Shay Langalers struck out looking at his first at home. swing and a fly ball well struck left field. Guriel handles the chance. And we’re back as we go to the top of the fourth. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder Jorge Barrosa. missed with a change up. Ball one. You know, these Dbacks really producing with runners on. It’s been a right place, right time kind of game for them. They put a bunch of runs on the board thanks in large part to four hits with runners in scoring position. Next offering is in for a strike. On top of that, they haven’t left many runners on base. So, they’ve been efficient getting runners on and finding ways to bring them home. Ground ball right side. Schuman tosses to first and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. Up next for the Diamondbacks, right fielder Corbin. So, back to the top of the Arizona lineup. Here’s the Diamondbacks leadoff hitter Corbin Carroll who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. out of bounce right side. Tosses to first. Two quick outs here in the top of the fourth. Now batting second base catel Marte. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. Singi. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Well, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. And a swing and a miss. He got away with one there, but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this. Got him swinging. He chased the change up and Arizona is set down. One, two, three. Nothing doing for Arizona and it remains 53. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the left fielder Tyler Sodro. Tyler Sodrom check swing and he went strike one. High-fly ball out to center field. Barroso and there’s one down. Now batting third base digging in. Miguel Anduhar one for one with a single and a run scored so far. And there’s the strike. Chris, we were excited to watch him pitch. This is a little more along the lines of what we were expecting performance-wise. Yeah, boo. Great pitchers like this. You may get one opportunity in one inning to get to them, to get some runs up on the board, and if you don’t take it, then you may see zeros the rest of the ball game. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. This one in the air, right field. Nice grab on the run. Two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Cortez batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. And it’s even up. Come on. Athletics. Swanging a ball. Drilled center field. Barrosa settles under this one. Brings it in. And that is that. Three up, three down that time. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Diamondbacks five and the A’s three. So digging in Heraldo Pomo. Let’s go. Just missed. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Jacob Lopez, the rookie left-hander, appears to be getting going. Bowden also getting ready. Fast ball in for a strike and a count. One and one. The shorts stop takes a ball. Two and one. A change up. Missing now. Three and one. Sliced hard but foul. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Now batting the designated hitter, Aueno Suarez. Audio Suarez up to hit now. He is singled and he has flyed to left. And that drops in for a strike. Turn baby. That misses the zone and it’s a ball and a strike. Nobody out. Runner at first. Go, baby. And that one is inside. on the ground to short. Could be two and he can’t come up with it. Still able to fire over and the throw is late. Missed opportunity there thanks to the misplay. I think he just rushed that one. Great chance to turn two. And as an infielder on a play like that, I think guys can get a little excited and forget to make the play one step at a time. Could have been two outs. Instead, they get none. First and second, no outs. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. And that one missing low. Swing and a miss. One and two. Just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Swing and a miss. struck him out. Adrien Del Castillo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s two for two. And that drops in for a strike. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Del Castillo tries to check his swing. Now a look to third and he went around. Rule the swing. Line drive. Could be extra bases. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. It’s a double. Third hit of the night for him. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. I’ll tell you, when you smoke a line drive into the gap like that, I mean, sure, home runs are king, but I feel like nothing makes you feel like a true professional hitter more than a bolt the other way. So, two in scoring position with one out. Tristan English stands in now for the Diamondbacks. First pitch misses. Second and third. One away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. That one missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished. Little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Misses with the two and he’s fired three straight outside the strike zone. And there’s the automatic. Two on, one out. Swinging a foul out of play. 3-2. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Curts calls it in. Two away. Man, it’s so frustrating. You got a couple of runners on, you want to try to drive in at least one run. Maybe you get a little too big with the swing. Pops out right there. And I tell you what, nobody’s more frustrated with that at bat than him. Alexander in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Swing and a miss and it’s on two. Second and third. Two down. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another two on, two outs. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. And they’ve doubled up. Now it’s 63. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the second base. Max Schum. Max Schum. Nelson back to work. Late swing fouled off. Just missed. Swing and a ground ball. Fires to first on the run. Nicely done for the out. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. He drove in two with a double his first time up. He swings and fouls one off. He’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result he’s been able to keep his pitch count low. Throwing the ball very well right now. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Carol flashes the leather on the run and catch. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Butler at the plate now. That’s ball one. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter’s count at 2 and 0. Two down. Nobody on. Swinging a liner foul off to the right. Next offering is fouled back. Got him swinging. A’s go quickly and quietly there. And they’re still doubled up. It’s six to three. Top of the sixth inning. Here’s the center fielder, Jorge Barrosa. Barosa. And that one hit to first. Takes it himself. Now one gone in the top of the sixth. Up next for the Diamondbacks, right fielder Corbin Carroll. So the batting order turns over. Next to hit for Arizona, Corbin Carroll 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top half of the sixth. And that one almost got him. Hey. Well, pretty clear to me he was trying to go deep right there, but you got to get a pitch that you can handle. And a ground ball to first. Curts takes it to the bag. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Now batting second baseel. Two outs. Base is empty. Now up next for Arizona, Catel Marte. right through there for a strike. And that’s a little high up the middle and makes the play and that’s out number three. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. 234 do up in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Diamondback six and the A’s three. And we’re back. And here’s the first baseman, Nick Curts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Action in the pen down there. Number 43 preparing to come on if needed. Number 27 getting cranked up as well. Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. And that is foul outside low. Two balls, two strikes. This guy’s seen two change ups in a row. Could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here. Come on, let’s show them. Line drive and that should be extra bases around first heading for two and they hold him at second. Maybe this is going to be the moment they start the comeback. Just one of those at bats you almost hate to see come to an end. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Ryan Nelson won’t go any further and not a great performance, but he leaves with a big lead. New arm when we get back. ready reliever out of the pen, Anthony Dclani. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. And next is the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. He’s already homerred here in this one. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. You know, these A’s really impressing me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. Ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. And now the count is even. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column. But with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. Let’s go to baby. Let’s go. Two balls in the dirt. Man at second. And he chases that one. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout and there’s one away. Boogie just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Langelers in the box again takes a strike. One out and a runner at second here in the bottom of the six. And that drops in for a strike. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. Come on. Fouls it back with two strikes. 2-2 now. And there’s a ball. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. keeps the at going with a foul ball. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Let’s go now. Fights it off. You’ll see another. And ball four, two aboard. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Bo, he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Soderstrom in the box now. Takes strike one. That one finds the zone. No balls, two strikes. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone in the dirt. Blocked. No advance. Good job behind the dish. And a ball evens the count. Way to lay off that pitch down. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. The next pitch misses. Three and two now. Curts the lead runner out at second. Langelers at first. One gone. swinging a ground ball up the middle. Flips it from the ground. That’s one double play. What a twin killing to end the inning. Acrobatic play to get this one started. Determined to get a good flip and that flip leads to an inning ending double play. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Jacob Lopez. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Heraldo Purdomo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Pomo, baby. Let’s go. And that’s way high. And that is ball one. That to right and it stays fair. Now he’ll turn for second and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Now batting designated hitter Aueno Suarez. Au Heno Suarez up to the plate now. One for three. First offering and it just misses. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top half of inning number seven. Ground ball left side and that’s just fouled. Come on. Strike two. The Athletics have some bullpen action. Shawn Nukem up and throwing. No outs. Runner on second. That one is absolutely belted. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Headed for the plate. The throws offline. He’s safe. It’s seven to three. Picks himself up an RBI. That can be a dangerous pitch if you don’t get it inside enough because as a hitter, you see it coming across the plate the whole way. No problem handling it and putting a good swing on it that time. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Lordis Goreel Jr. digs in now and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Ball one there. The one-1 is fouled off. Runner at second. Nobody out. On the ground. That’s a base hit. Coming home. He will score. It’s an RBI single and it’s 83. Catcher Adrien Delio. Man at first, nobody out. And the batter now Adrien Del Castillo three for three with two singles in a double. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Base knock right field. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Now batting first base manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Jacob Lopez gives way and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. So a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Ben. This southpaw’s been really good against left-handed hitters. First and second, no outs. And now the first baseman, Tristan English. He’s 0 for one. And that one fouled off. First and second here. No outs. Fouled off down the right side. Next offering upstairs. Really good take especially with two strikes. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again and a one-two again. Got him swinging for the strike out. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Here’s the third baseman. Bla1 Alexander. First offering misses badly for ball one. Still only one out here in the inning. Fly ball to right. Cortez puts it away for the out. Now batting the center fielder, Jorge Barrosa. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Jorge Barrosa. Well, both sides equally as strong. So, not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. That one in there across the letters. Now, just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Guriel over at second. Del Castillo at first. Two out of the inning. High in the air out to right. Cortez puts it away. And that is that. So it’s two runs on four hits. No errors and a couple left on. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Diamondbacks eight and the A’s three. And welcome back to the ballpark. Set for the last half of the seventh. Now the third baseman, Miguel Anduhar. There’s the strike. up the middle, dives, but it kicks off his glove. No throw, and they don’t get an out on the play. So, a man aboard, Carlos Cortez up next for the A’s. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. Next offering is in for a strike. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Ruer at first with no outs here. swing and a miss for the strike out. Well done behind the dish. Man, it’s so difficult as a hitter to get on plane with that pitch. It’s breaking down and in and you’ve got to find a way to match the plane. And if it’s nasty like that one, bite at the end, most times you’re swinging over the top and walking back to the dugout. Schuman stands in now and watches strike one baby on the ground to second might be two offbalance feed there’s one to first not in time great effort there now batting shortstop Daryl Hern So up next, Daryl Hernet. First pitch misses. The Dbacks leading by five here in the bottom of the seventh. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it. He’s got it and that’s the inning. The A’s strand one. Can’t chip away at an 83 deficit. And we’re back. And now the right fielder, Corbin Carroll. Corbin Carroll. Bowden back to work. That clips the corner and a foul ball. That one way outside going to count one and two on the ground right side. Kurts steps on the bag. First out in the top of the eighth. Now batting second Marte. Catel Marte up to the plate. gets the call and that is strike one. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Comes up empty. Base is empty. One away and we’re in the top of the eighth. Bring him home. Back up the middle and a base hit. Just kind of sliced that one into center. Up next for the Diamondbacks short. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Peraldo Peromo pitches in there. Go and one. Let’s turn to lined and that’s a base hit. Lead runner holds at second base. First and second with one down. Right there. Does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. And next is the Diamondbacks DH. Auheno Suarez right through there for a strike. Let’s go green to go, baby. Let’s go. That one finds the zone. 0 and two. Now that fast ball, even though it’s up, that’s the velocity you want to go after. Low 90s a lot better than trying to hit the high 90s. Sets him down looking. That was pretty nasty. Well, you could tell he wasn’t expecting that ball to break back in on him. He may have been looking for something away, maybe something soft, but that slider on the inside corner absolutely frozen. Here’s the left fielder, Lordis Goreel Jr. in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. lifted to left center way back there and that is gone. He sends it out of here and they add on. It’s 113. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. That home run was a no doubter. As we dive into the numbers with Stackcast. Crushed Boo. Just absolutely crushed. 112 mph on the exit VO. And like you said, no doubt about that one. Plenty of launch angle to give it that backspin as well. And that carried way over the wall. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Ben Bowden departs. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Justin Sterner. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Two outs, nobody on. Adrien Del Castillo now at the plate and the first pitch misses for ball one. One ball. No strike. And he grounds one to the right side. Gets it to first. And that is the inning. Three-run shot for Arizona. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead, you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. This one isn’t exactly close, Chris. Let’s go off script for a moment. Okay. Were we on script? Never. Do you collect baseball cards? You know, when I was a kid, I used to put them in my back tire of my bicycle so it would sound like a motorcycle. probably ruined some good cards back then, but don’t really have much of a collection. The other day, I came across a binder that my wife had in one of the drawers, and my son’s got some baseball cards, so we’ll be looking to see if there’s any kind of retirement income in there inside two and one. So, my dad told me that he had a bunch of Mickey Man rookie cards and a whole bunch of valuable cards and his mom tossed them because what, you know, what did she know? So, I made my mom keep all my baseball cards and I really don’t have any that are valuable and that story stunk by me. Anyway, that one the other way and foul ball 22 and that one in the air center field. Barrosa makes the play. One up, one down. Now batting number 16, Nick Curts up next for the A’s, little bit low that catches the top part of the zone. That’s strike one. The Diamondbacks up big in this one here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that is cut on and missed. That is strike two. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Alexander makes the catch and there’s two away. Oh, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited, came out of his mechanics, and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. Unfortunate for him. Fought off foul. This one popped up. Alexander gets under it, makes the grab, and that’ll end the inning. And one, two, three go the A’s. Still 11 to three. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the first baseman, Tristan English. And that one upstairs. Ball one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Cut on and miss. Curve ball struck him out. Oh, that’s a curveball that people like to describe as a hammer or Uncle Charlie. And you can see why. It’s not a looping slow curve. He throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end. Alexander now at the plate as he swings through strike one. And a swing and a miss there. I think he was sitting off speed there. Next one misses. It’s a ball in two strikes. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, go look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. That one off the mark and the count is even. Two and two. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatch. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Next to hit for Arizona, Jorge Barrosa and misses inside. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. That one pushed foul in the air out towards left center. Butler pulls that one down and that is that. So they go quietly there onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks 11 and the A’s three. Now pitching for we’re back and on the mound is the closer Kevin Gle. Compared to some days, this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him. So he should be fairly free and easy out there. Still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langalers. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. And there’s a foul ball. When you got a catcher like this guy with a big arm like that behind the plate, it really shuts down the running game. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. When you have a catcher that can throw like that, a pitcher doesn’t have to worry as much about the slide step. He can keep his mechanics intact and have a better opportunity of getting that hitter out with a swing and miss. And there’s a base hit to left and the leadoff man aboard. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. 0 for three in this one. Sodro outside. Ball one. Well, the leadoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Langelers gets his lead at first with nobody out. and delivers outside. Double play ball to second. The throw to first. One out. Bottom of the ninth. Now batting third base. Here’s the third base Miguel Anduhar Singi. He’s got a history of coming through in big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. There’s the strike. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. Just off the outside edge, and it’s one and one. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. The A’s down to their final out. Carlos Cortez getting ready to hit. In this situation with first base open, he shouldn’t give him anything to hit. There’s a right-hander on deck. Check swing and he went and it’s all and one. just missed. Runner at second, two down. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. And that is downstairs now. Two balls in a strike. And it’s fouled away. Ginkle is just one strike away. Got him. And that’s the ball game. I’d say you’re lying if you say you don’t feel a fivegame losing streak. This W definitely helps them relax a little bit and take some of the pressure off from it going to a six, seven, or even an eightgame losing streak. And your final 11-3 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
