Training Camp Live: Brick-By-Brick | Dallas Cowboys 2025

[Music] Welcome in to another edition of Training Camp Live presented by American Airlines right here on the practice field in Oxnard, California. We’ve got Rowdy, got Tommy Yish. I’m Kyleman. Glad you’re with us. Alex Lilly behind the camera giving you an inside look at Cowboys training camp. We’ve got some tempo drill coming up. This is just kind of team drill getting things started off the bat. What are some of the things that you’ve noticed from today’s practice? Uh, well, first of all, I don’t know why you guys gave me the mic and not rowdy. I think he’s a little bit more qualified. Some would argue, but that’s the problem. I guess he’s not going to talk on the microphone. At least I can do that for now. Um, yeah. No, it look, Brian Shimemer wants to play up tempo, right? And we’ve we’ve seen it a lot in these practices and it wants to make sure that these guys are are ready to go in those situations where you need to get up to the line quick and you’re just prepared for everything. And when you’ve got as much speed as he does on this roster, you just saw Cavonte Turpin get a carry there as the epitome of speed. You want to take advantage of it and you can take advantage of defenses by going up to the line quickly. No practice yesterday. There were plenty of storylines. Of course, the Micah Parsons story line paired with a couple of tackles being signed by the Cowboys, including former Cowboys star Lyel Collins on that offensive line. He’s wearing number 72. 71. still belongs to Nate Thomas, the former number of Lyel Collins. There’s a handoff to the first team offense and Javvante Williams earns that tote. How about Shamar James, the rookie out of Florida, closing in, filled that run perfectly and got into the got into the gap, met Javvante Williams there. That would have been a tackle either at the line of scrimmage or a tackle for loss. So well done there by Shamar James who has gotten some run with this first team and you can kind of already tell that Matt Averflow is putting his Midas touch on him a little bit with these linebackers. Couple of defensive tackle notes. You have Marshon Neland outside. Then you got inside Solomon Thomas with this first team alongside Odigizua on the interior. Jaylen Tolbert with the reception outside. Want to see more from him moving forward. Yeah, he’s he’s a guy who needs to stack some good days because there have been some not so good ones recently. And you you look at the roster behind him and you’ve got Jonathan Mingo who’s put together a really solid stretch and Jaylen Tolbert’s a guy who led the team in receiving touchdowns last season. And you would think that makes you pretty comfortable on a roster, but hey, every season’s different in the NFL. You got to earn your spot. And not saying Jaylen Tolbert’s not going to make this roster. He certain he probably will. But nonetheless, you still got to put together some some good days. First team under center and that’s a free play. Dak Prescott got him to jump offside if they end up moving this back to the uh normal spot and reset with the same formation. I’d love to see George Piggin versus Don Bland iso on this outside. They’re going to rehddle here, so it may not be the same formation, but that would be a fun matchup. Couple of really talented receiver DBs going at it one-on-one. You think these fans want to pay Micah KO? Yeah, I don’t know if we could hear that in the microphone behind, but if they could, it was pretty adamant. Well, look, and and we’ve seen the one-on- ones, too. These one-on-one matches we saw the other day. CD Lamb, Don Bland going at it. So, they’re isolated here on this side. Looks like you’re getting what you want, Kyle. Yep. Pickings, Bland. And it is Pickkins. Oh, boy. That gets passed off. Good coverage from Malik Hooker over the top and Dak Prescott has to take off and see. Did you see Donovan Ezaraku on that play? Oh my goodness, he just blew right past Terrence Steel. It wasn’t even close. And man, he’s he’s I’m tell you what, this kid is special, man. He’s putting together some good days of practice and he’s been so consistent, very refined in all of his moves, super active with his hands, and another big win there for the rookie. We’ve seen it a couple times throughout past training camp. Some rookie stars stand out early. They play in that first preseason game and then they take the pads off and take a breather for the remainder of the preseason. Would not be surprised if Donovan Ezrau finds his way onto that list. Here’s Dak Prescott finding Cavante Turpin over the middle of the field. He has the reception in a big game. Yeah, it might not be many harder people to guard on a crossing route than Cavante Turpin just because if you’re a corner, you’ve got to make up ground from the jump unless you go early, right? So that time Zion Childress, the undrafted free agent out of Kentucky who is getting some run here with the ones and earned praise from Brian Shanheimer the other day is one of the guys that wasn’t initially on his radar but now has popped up. Just just couldn’t hang there in coverage and to be fair, not a lot of people can. Joe Milton back at quarterback and he takes off on the bootleg. I think that was a designed run initially or maybe a busted play. It was kind of tough to see from here. Payton Turner that time got in the backfield. The former first round pick came over from the New Orleans Saints this off season and Turner’s a guy that couple times now we’ve said his name in these practices. It’s he’s got to stack together some consistent reps, but overall he’s got he’s had a solid camp, but a pretty quiet solid camp, too. got the tackle on that play. Here’s Milton again under center. They’ve been working him a lot under center trying to get some level of rhythm and comfortability whenever it comes to being in a new spot like that. Played a lot of out of shotgun during his time in Tennessee. We’ve talked about that on past episodes. Jaylen Craropper with the reception. Kean Hall underneath it. Rips the football free on the sideline. And not sure if that was a catch fumble scenario, but either way the ball hit the ground. Yeah, either way that ball is I I think that’s an incomplete pass. I don’t think that would have counted as a reception. Hell of a play from Kean Hall to stay active, and that’s what you’re going to get from Matt Eberlu’s defense. These guys are going to keep fighting for the ball till the second the play ends. Ryan Shanheimimer gave some praise to Kan Hall today. He talked about his ability to play in the nickel, be in that slot cornerback position. And he continues to earn reps with both the first and second team and probably just to find some continuity across the board at that cornerback spot that’s a bit banged up at this point in training camp. Big hit up front. A little wide receiver sweep to Tan Holden. Will Greer was at quarterback there. And Holden with the speed to turn up field. Yeah, Holden not necessarily known as the biggest speed guy. not really much of a separator at times when he’s running his routes, but nonetheless, you just saw how productive he was at Oregon. And this is a guy who with the football in his hands is a good playmaker. He can go and make plays for you. Had a couple touchdowns the other day, the last practice the Cowboys had. So, he can make some plays for you and he’s making some noise. Wouldn’t shock me at all if he’s in contention for a roster spot. So, drill one comes to a close heading into the second period of team drills here in Oxnard. Once again, alongside Tommy Yarish, I’m Kyleman’s with Alex Lily behind the camera. Training camp live moving into a tempo period. This is good for both the offensive play caller, defensive play caller, and then of course the relay on both sides to try and get things set and working in a short time span. There’s Hunter Lipkkey out on the flat met by Donovan Wilson. What do you want to see from the offense here as they get up to the line of scrimmage? Uh well if they’re going to work tempo like it looks like they’re going to just being on the same page right when you’re trying to get a new offensive line coordinated together and you see a jumbo tight end package here where they’re bringing out big 77 Sadique Charles you want everybody to be on the same page fitting their fitting their gaps getting to the right spot and a lot of Hunter Lipkkey run here utilizing Lipkkey not once but twice in these early tempo periods. First team defense out there. Guys like Thomas, James. Keep that in mind. James in the middle of this defense as a rookie out of Florida. Maris Bell, Donovan Azaraku, Ka Elum, Kim Hall is outside. Jack Samborn still on the field at the weak side spot. Brock Hoffman is in at left guard. Oh, Tyler Smith in there. Brian Shanheimer said earlier today that he expected him to practice. Had some knee soreness. It wasn’t considered to be anything serious. So maybe just needed another extra day off. There’s Dak just behind Jonathan Mingo. Tried to slide back to the football. Ca elum in coverage. Yeah, Dak was frustrated with himself there. That one was behind Mingo and he knew it. Otherwise, a pretty good route run there by Mingo. Dax just got to put it on the spot. Missed a couple of throws in the early portions of practice, too. Was really efficient during Thursday’s session. Off day yesterday. Back to the ground they go. get to see a little more Javvante Williams. Yeah, Miles Sanders, running back from Carolina that the Cowboys signed this off season, still not practicing today. Brian Shottenheimimer iterated to us that it didn’t seem to be anything serious, but he might need still a day or two before he returns to the practice field. Uh, so that means more time for Javvante Williams and the rookie out of Texas, Jaden Blue. Let’s take a look at one of the stars early of camp, at least the young stars. Let’s go ISO here on the interior defensive line and watch Jay Toya, the rookie out of UCLA. He’s had a great camp. He’s situated wearing the number 93 in blue. Let’s watch him take on the interior of the second team offensive line there. Again, pushing the pocket, working inside. He’s not able to get home, but if you’re moving the line of scrimmage, you’re doing your job as a one tech in this defense. Yeah, he’s just got to be a space heater, right? 6’2, 340 lbs. This is a guy that you want to handle a double team set. other guys can go one-on-one and be isolated to try and get to the quarterback and fill in the back field. So, you got a guy that size like Dia and he demands a double team like that just because of how big he is. That’s going to help you out. And the Cowboys need a guy in the middle who can stuff the run. They’ve been waiting to see that for years. They have Toy Doya out of the draft. They added Peron Winfrey late in the process right before Cowboys started practice here in Oxnard wearing the number 99. And it looks like Somebody slow to get up, but doesn’t look to be too big of a problem. Yeah, it’s James Houston, the uh free agent the Cowboys recently signed after a workout. He’s back in the play here. Well, you you like what you’ve seen from Toya. You like what you’ve seen from Winfrey. Tyrus Weed has put together a couple good practices. This is kind of a group of the the unsung younger players that you can kind of love watching. And there’s Winfrey. He jumped a little early. That gives Milton a chance to show off the arm strength. Nope. Tucks it and runs. Yeah, there’s nowhere for Milton to throw. There was a double team on one side and then Robert Rochelle. It is a free play though. You can throw that. Sure. But I just wanted to see him throw at 70 yards. That’s all right. Well, they did reset the play. Buddy Johnson at linebacker too with Deone Clark. Fake to Phil Mafa. Throw on the run. That one complete to Ryan Fenoi in space. Good spot there from Milton. Just takes his time in the pocket. Doesn’t rush himself. Goes through his reads and layers a throw downfield. That’s exactly what you wanted to see from him, right? Just slowly but surely taking these next steps, finding his spots and hitting his receivers. One’s working back into the fold. This tempo period, they’re not moving the ball, just so you know. They’re not working down the field. It’s not a drive. They’re using the same spot respotting the ball. Sam Williams from a wide nine technique on the opposite side of Terrence Steel way outside getting set up to rush the passer. Dak back under center. Fivestep drop underneath a Princeton fan. They call him Bull because he has the physicality and he runs through a defender and then of course able to take off after the thud. Yep. Back in pats today for the Cowboys. So thud practices and just a quick dump off there from from Dak. Nothing was covered down the field. They doubled Jonathan Mingo. So that was a good breed. Jake Ferguson. Jake has some family in town. It’s a family weekend as well for a lot of these coaches and players. And so good to show out in front of the loved ones for a lot of these guys that have spent two weeks or more out here in Oxnard, California for practices. Got a beach day planned later. Yeah, that sounds like fun. Of course, beautiful weather here in Oxar. A little warm during this drill. Suns come out. Dak. Pressure by Azarak who had to float it over the top to George Pickkins and he’s shoved out of bounds quickly. That would have been a modest gain. Dak salvages the play but again there’s the speed from Ezie. Yeah, just so good off of the edge. And again, we talked about how he’s not the biggest guy, but he’s just so technically sound. Uses his arm so well to beat guys at the point of attack. And this guy’s pro ready, man. Play action. Dak steps up from the pressure out of Solomon Thomas. He wants to let it fly deep. Double coverage. CD Land goes back to the football and gets it. There was a whistle behind the line of scrimmage. May have blown that play dead, but either way, double coverage doesn’t matter with CD Lamb. Yeah, that was a sack for Solomon Thomas. And then another sack for Donovan Hzaraku if he messed up on Yeah, the whistles were already blowing. And then Dak Prescott just did not get everything under that throw. That was not his best throw. Just kind of wobbly and a little bit of a duck, if you will. But nonetheless, when you got a receiver like CD Lamb down the field, it can always be a catchable ball no matter who’s on him. Dak and Cidd after that play as they work to the sideline. Wonder if there was a level of miscommunication. Yeah, he didn’t seem too confident in that throw. Looks like it came off his hand. Weird. Phil Mafa on the run attempt. Yeah, after really what was a great day for the offense Thursday. Dak Prescott dealing. He was able to command the line of scrimmage. Was very impressive. It hasn’t been the same here on a Saturday in Oxnard. Defense has really shined here in these early portions of practice. Here’s Joe Milton. Throws. I’m surprised at how far he threw that football. It was almost underhanded. Well, he sidearm submarine pitcher maybe was trying to toss it up to Stephen Jones and the rest of the executives over there in the middle stansion. That was nowhere near the field of play, but throwing it away there. We have seen Cooper Rush hit the tower before in practice. That can’t be a good thing. No, it wasn’t. He’s with the Ravens now. We’ll see him in the second preseason game. Nice little family reunion there. A lot of communication at the line of scrimmage here for Milton. Back to the ground game and that physicality pays off one way or the other. Wrapping things up here on training camp live. Not a ton of highlight reel plays today. It was more of the the ground game, the offensive line work, getting guys set at the line of scrimmage. We do have some rules experts from the NFL here to try and help out with a lot of that. So this is a lot of the ground laying, the foundation laying for Brian Shottenheimer on a Saturday. Yeah. And that’s never it’s not always a bad thing when you don’t have highlight plays, right? You’re not going to get a big play every play. You’re not going to get a big play every series. So laying that groundwork is important. You look back at how at times undisiplined this team was in 2024. So having these rules officials out here to make sure everything is in line, everybody’s doing their right thing, everybody’s aligned correctly on the line of scrimmage, offensive line, wide receivers, things like that. some stuff you want to knock out now so that you don’t have a situation like you did in 2024 at times where you’re getting overly penalized and it can cost you games. It certainly can and that’s why they’re trying to avoid that at this point in training camp. Still a long way to go, but it is getting into game week. Next time we’re on training camp live, it’ll be preparation for the Rams game on Saturday. And of course, the Rams come to town on Tuesday. We’ll have a training camp live presented by American Airlines for that one as well. for Alex Lily behind the camera for my guy Tommy Yarish. I’m Kyle Yman saying so long from Oxnard, California. We will see you on Monday. [Music]

Laying the foundation of a new playbook and scheme remain one of the major points of training camp every year. This was certainly the case during Saturday’s practice as Brian Schottenheimer continued his 11-on-11 work in the ground game. Kyle Youmans and Tommy Yarrish talk through the sights and sounds of Oxnard, California. #DallasCowboys #CowboysNation #NFL
