Minnesota Vikings Training Camp Notes Day 9 – The McCarthy Rises

[Music] What’s going on Jeromes? It’s a beautiful day. The sun beat town little runaway or something like that. Minnesota fighting Vikings back at it. TCO Performance Center bar and grill practice number nine feeling fine. Vikings at full pads large capacity and it was beautiful because JJ McCarthy then McCarthy rises. Oh, look at your fallen idol. No, I wonder if McCarthy let him look good or Flores let him look good. I don’t know. Probably not the case. But one of the things about McCarthy now, of course, every time, you know, McCarthy breathes, I’m like, that’s what I’m talking about. That’s why he’s the goat. The goat. All right. But something I like is that he responds well to adversity. Now, obviously, you know, this week of practice has been uneven at best, right? But and some quarterbacks would let that quicksand just spiral out of control because mentally they don’t got it right. But McCarthy, all the cliches about you either win or you learn, all that stuff. It’s a blessing to have this competition every single day. I actually think that he believes it. And I actually think that he he believes it’s true. So it is true, right? and he responds well from getting punched in the face, literally, which we’ll we’ll talk about here in a sec. But I I like that because things aren’t always going to be sunshine and roses dur during the NFL season, especially in the playoffs. So, a fact that you have a guy who no matter what happens, you could be down 283 in the Super Bowl and you’re a Michigan quarterback. What’s going to happen? I don’t know. I don’t know. Good things can happen, right? But, uh, some takeaways from practice number nine. So fans packed TCO uh high 77 in Egan, the crown jewel of the southeast metro. Wildfire smoke is low. Like I know that we’re still under a air quality advisory, but it was it was a lot better than yesterday. Uh c certainly was for sure, but uh fans packing the stands. Our guy Sean Borman in person. That’s a that’s so much purple. I just love that, man. It’s good times. Also Justin Jefferson. So yeah, I I think he’s been done for training camp. Obviously wasn’t going to play preseason, but uh he was jogging on his own. Now, he does have a sleeve on that hamstring. Uh it appeared to be, but you know, jogging on his own joking. Uh he and Kevin Okconor are literally best friends, which is funny. And uh as we said previously, like he is legitimately a hype man. He he is out there. He is all fired up. Like I love it, man. I love it. Also, the McCarthy Addison chemistry is on point again. Uh, the play of the day was Addison going up and just mossing Dwight Nudy Mcloth. JJ McCarthy uh, dropped a dime, which it’s kind of crazy that it’s like he completed a touchdown over Nudy Mcloth and that that’s like a big time deal. All right, if you said that two weeks ago, but you know, Dwight’s Dwight has definitely quietly been one of the stories of training camp, right? And you absolutely love love to see that. Uh, but even though Addison is probably going to be suspended first three games, I mean, building up that chemistry now, uh, so he can have it late in the year, it’s going to be good. Uh, Rogers, uh, Isaiah Rogers Blackman had some nice reps in red zone drills. Uh, Jeff Akuda might also be one of the stories of camp. the resurrection is is really good and he’s been basically running with the ones all training camp and I feel like he does have he is going to be the starting quarterback for the Vikings even though uh obviously McGloth’s had a great camp uh even though Blackman has had some great moments as well you know Rogers Akuda Murf that’s going to be your top three corners to start the season and again having some good depth at corner you can never have enough as Flores says also uh offensive line so offensive line definitely got tagged earlier in the week, but probably had their best day as a unit, even though Darasaw rest day wasn’t out there in pads. But offensive line a lot more solid today. You know, Ryan Kelly feisty uh throwing dudes out of the club. Donovan Jackson, he is for real. I mean, Pass Pro will be fine, but run blocking is where he’s going to shine. And also, Jordan Mason is a runaway train, never come back. Just a freak. Like I honestly, you know, he he he might get a couple carries in preseasons, but in the regular season when Darasaw is at 100%, when Fry is at 100%, this offensive line is where it should be. Like Jordan Mason might be the early star of of the season. All right. And we talked about how it’s probably going to be like a 6040 split. Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason. It might be flipped around by the end of the year. You never know, right? Also defensively, mainly Jonathan Allen at left defensive end. Like his reps against Will Fry pretty good. Uh and also Harrison Phillips has been nos as well as right defensive end because they they’ve had Hargrave line up at nose tackle quite a bit uh early in training camp. So that’s something to monitor. So maybe flip Phillips and Hargrave on this list. Also uh you did have TJ Hawinson limped off. Apparently uh appeared to be a groin injury. Uh but noteworthy is that uh hopefully it’s not too serious. He did stay on the field. He did rejoin the offensive huddle. So hopefully just something that’s not a big deal. Uh Ursk did get first team reps uh with Giovani as well uh in his place uh you know in addition to Josh Oliver. So that’s something to keep in mind especially as Gav Bartholomew is still on the pup list but uh Urosk could have a slight lead over Nesbbit and Richi in in that regard. So, I mean, maybe Urosc ends up as tight end three, which is funny because his grandfather invented the baby carrot. Look it up. There you go. Also, this was a very good JJ McCarthy day. And you know, McCarthy’s best practices have been the first one last week, Saturday, you know, first day of fans in the stands and also today. So, he just thrives in front of large crowds, which is good. Uh, just accurate, you know, buzz went through his reads or went through his progressions really quickly. uh ball placement was on point. Uh and also the the chemistry with Addison is certainly there. Uh plus, you know, some of the touch throws that, you know, you thought that he was going to struggle with at first seem to be on point today. Uh nearly perfect in seven on seven. Uh we we’ll rag at Sports. Uh JJ McCarthy went five and six in a seven on seven period with several impressive throws to the intermediate areas. Only in completion was a deep bow to Naylor, which I think was PI on Auda. So, I’m gonna say he was really five for five. These refs are blind. Something like that. I don’t know. Also, like I said, the best rep of the day was a red zone touchdown over Nudy, which fired up for Nudy, man. I I mean, Dwight McGloin like Flores sort of tempered expectations, too. But you can tell he’s pretty impressed, pretty happy about it. Also, fight fight fight. So, this is probably the story of the day besides McCarthy having a Will Fry is getting after it. So, what happened is that so even though they’re they’re in full pads, generally it’s no tackling to the ground, right? And uh Aaron Jones caught a a check down from McCarthy out of the backfield. Asa just lit him up, you know, just one of those, you know, sort of send shots, right? Uh so Jones got knocked to the ground. Actually, Aaron Jones is in the middle of both these fights. It’s kind of funny. Everyone’s defending Aon Jones honor. That’s that’s how you could tell that his teammates love him. But uh then offensive line took umbrage with Asuma as well. They should and then Asuma took a swing at fries which I don’t know in general training camp fights I feel they’re fine right mo mostly guys just got to vent some testosterone as long as you’re not swinging at a dude who’s wearing a helmet and as long as you don’t hurt anyone and you don’t hurt yourself I think it’s fine. But come on. I mean, Osmo’s barely hanging on to this roster and then then he takes a swing at the $88 million free agent after taking a shot at like the the the oldest guy on the offense. Okay. Okay. And then the play the the next play, the very next play, rookie Tyler Batter from BYU, who looks huge by the way, looks pretty damn good. Uh so he tackled Jones to the ground, which you know, again, generally in pads you don’t do. Uh, and then McCarthy, I love that JJ McCarthy got in his face, man. Like JJ’s a hockey dude. He He’s never going to back down from a an altercation or a fight. So, he got in Tyler Baddy’s grill and then everyone backed him up. I It was It was a bench clearing brawl, right? But really, it was more people are just like hyped up, you know? There was, you know, besides Osmo Punch, there really wasn’t any fist to cuffs like everyone was fine. It really was more of an energizing skirmish than an actual like fight fight, you know what I mean? So, it’s good to see. And also, you know, Kevin McConnell has a no fighting policy. There’s a little fighting. And then, uh, a point of mild concern. So, will the throw went 305, you know, shank two wide left. Both of them were under 40. So, he’s had a couple of misses in camp so far. There’s not another kicker on the 90man roster right now. Maybe there should be. I don’t know where I I I have confidence that will the thrill will will get together, but it’s noteworthy. It’s like things they make you go h. So there you go. But either way, love the Jade McCarthy got up off the mat after a couple of tough practices. So the McCarthy rises. Uh let us know your thoughts. Practice number nine for the Minnesota Vikings. Uh let us know comment section you guys to do skull production value.

  1. Once the pads went on, I'm sure that Coach Flo told his dudes to just play JJ at 100% game speed because if his first exposure to full game speed reps is their first mixed practice, he's gonna be in trouble. Let him get used to playing NFL defense in team practices.

  2. Just seen a yahoo article that completely dumped on McCarthy saying he looks nothing like the CFP QB he was.
So I came here for a more balanced take

  3. Did Flores let him look good?! Brian Flores strikes me as the kind of guy who would step on his grandma to beat his kids at ping pong. 😂. In his world, taking it easy on a kid would be useless.

  4. I feel like he wants it so bad he maybe a little dicey first couple games.
But he seems to make good adjustments in game, and when he can just play will be just fine.

  5. They scrip the plays in camp. It is pretty clear they set JJ up for success early on then they put the pressure on him and then after those struggles you scrip up success to get the timing down. It is all part of the plan to get him ready to go week 1

  6. I kinda feel like this competition we’re seeing between the O and D is really gonna take this team to the next level. They’re brining the energy already and we’re barely getting started.
