MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Aug 2, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

So, just about set now and today’s starter number 18. Chris, how about a scouting report? Yeah, and as Whip tells you, he’s been pretty effective this year on the mound. I mean, opposing hitters having a hard time getting on base and then being able to really distract him and do damage in terms of getting around the base path. So, taking the mound, this is a guy you want out there if you’re his teammate, and I expect him to be good in this one. Mason Win, the lead off batter, as he swings through for strike one. 0 and two now. And that one is inside ball one. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. And that one is inside. spoils that one and it remains two and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that’s in the dirt. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fouls it back with two strikes. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Now, this was a story we were paying attention to before the game. We’ve seen him give up walks in the past, and it’s an issue once again early on. And now it’s Ivon Herrera late on that fast ball. This might be a steal situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. Nobody out. Runner at first. Herrera in his second season, batting second in today’s lineup. And he was born in Panama. And a ground ball to first. It’s in and out of his glove. And it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinal lineup. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris. Yeah, Booan. That can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now. And that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of. Alec Burlson batting with one down takes the strike. Man, I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Yeah, that’s fouled off. A change up missing and it’s one and two. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. This guy’s seen two change ups in a row. Could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here. swings and miss has struck him out. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Here comes Wilson Contrus. And there’s the strike. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. Oh, he botches it. Still manages a throw. Third out. That ends the frame. The Cards leave one. And now the Friars will get their first chance. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Petco Park on the mound for this one. Steven Mats. What do you got on him, Chris? Well, he brings into this one an excellent strikeout to walk ratio on the season. And when you consider the amount of swings and misses that he gets and the fact that he’s not issuing free passes, that’s going to make him more economical in his pitch count allow him to move into the middle and deeper part of ball games. So we’ll see if that remains true in this one. Stepping in for San Diego, Fernando Tatis Jr. And that’s in there at the knees and one. Tatis waits little bit low and now it’s even one and one one just outside ball hard hit left side throws to first in time. One up, one down. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup and a big part of it, a guy with a great track record, Manny Machado and Boo, he’s their team leader in home runs. So, you know, the pitchers on that other side, man, they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting. You know, he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop. It’s not fluky at all. He can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly. So watch out when he steps in. Out to short. Win fires over to first and two quick outs in the bottom of the first here tonight. Good sinker rolling the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. On the ground, nice ground out. Two down, base is empty. Here’s Manny Machado now. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average hard grounder into the outfield for a knock and that keeps the inning going. Batting fourth, the center fielder Jackson. Jackson Merrill at the plate now. His first career home run happened right here at Petco Park. Yeah, and he got the silent treatment from his teammates in the dugout, which is such a baseball thing. You don’t see it anywhere else. Nothing like running through the dugout pretending to high-five teammates who won’t even look at you. Swing and a miss. And he was fooled. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. All right, goes down looking for the strikeout. Went back to the slider and it was a good idea. One left for San Diego. We played an inning, no score. Back here in San Diego. Second inning set to go. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Nolan Aronado. Nolan Aronado at the plate. Aronado guy who delivers big time power at the dish and will probably go down as one of the greatest defensive third baseman of all time. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. Now up for St. Louis, Jordan Walker. He’s been on fire at the dish lately, batting over 300 so far this month. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Swinging a foul out of play. Aronado on at first. Nobody out. Finish him to the right side. Oh, nice stop at first. The feed for one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Just a beautiful play right there to get it out. He dives to make the stop. Then a nice feed from his knees. Knew he didn’t have time to get up and make that throw. The throw beats the runner. That’s that internal clock working. Thomas Sajay next up for the Cardinals. Check swing. Did he go? No, he didn’t. One out man at first, one away. And a foul ball. Come on. Next offering is in for a strike. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation run on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. Not close with that one. Two balls, two strikes to count. Second inning here, no score. And now the count is full. And another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle. Struck him out without a swing. Called strike three. And a fast ball up in the zone. Now here is Pedro Pah. And that’s a little bit high. Get your head out. And the one two and0. Squirts away a little bit to second, but way too late. Safe there. And now a man into scoring position. That’s a tough spot for the catcher. Boo. no chance of stopping the outside pitch and now the runner moves up. Those moments can be really frustrating out to short. Bogarts out number three. So, one left for the Cardinals. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the second. Here’s Bogard Style. Bogard. Mats back to work. Had a strike in there. That one is absolutely belted. Burlson raging back towards the wall. Feeling for the wall. Makes the catch and foul ground. Batting six. The third baseman post. That was a great run to make the catch. Singing. We got to take another look at it with Stackcast. Yeah, he saw it perfectly off the bat. Reactions were excellent. took a very direct route to the ball and more than a 100 feet later he ran it down. I just love seeing that. Next for the Padres’s, Jose Glacius. First offering in the dirt. One out. Base is empty. And that one in the air center field. Scott, he’s got it. And there’s two away. Batting seven, the second baseman. Now here’s Jake Cronin. Cronin work. First pitch just misses. Swinging a miss at a slider. One and one. falling behind. Two and one. Ball. Two out. Base is empty. Foul ball. Swing and a highf fly ball left field and that’ll do it. We’ll move to the third with no score. Top half of the third inning. Stepping in, Victor Scott singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. Way outside. And that’s ball one. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground. He enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart close but called the ball and now 3 and 0. There’s one guy that I can think about Boo who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the offfield. So the lineup flips over. Mason Win now at the plate. Walk to open the ball game. I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. Here’s your one. Just missed. Look out. Take your base. And it hit him. Now batting designated first and second. No outser. Ivon Herrera will hit next. Singi, he’s got a history of coming through in the big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. Swing in a liner, base hit out into right center field, headed for the plate. Here comes the throw. He’ll score easily on the board first. It’s one zip. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runcoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Alec Burlson the next to hit. His first at bat was a strikeout. That one’s in there. And that’s strike one. win at second. Here on first with nobody out and he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. and ball. That’s the ball. Really good take, especially with two strikes. One and two. Cyson misses. It’s a strike out. Wilson Contrera is now up to the plate. 0 for one so far. the other way and it goes just fouled. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Hit on the ground. Might be two to second. That’s one. And that’s two. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. So digging in now for San Diego, Bryce Johnson. Johnson swinging a foul straight back. struck him out looking. Here’s Elias Diaz. That clips the corner. Line drive makes the grab for the second out. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. So the San Diego batting order turns over. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. And first offering is fouled off. Two down. Nobody on. And it’s even up. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. One and two is the count. Missed with a change up. Two and two on the ground right side. The throw to first and they take care of Tatis for the out. Three up, three down. Inning over. No runs, no hits, no errors. On to inning number four. It’s the Cardinals one and the Padres’s nothing. Back here at Petco Park, John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Nolan Aronado. Let’s go. This one chopped on the ground but foul. You know these cards doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. He’s only And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. And now the right fielder Jordan Walker 0 for one. He hit into a fieldielder’s choice his first time. Let’s get the easy now. Let’s go. A little bit high. Maybe one and0. Top of the zone for a called strike. Kicks and deals. No ball. Foul ball there. Outside low and the count’s full. Count is full. That’s towards center. Merryill under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. So up next, Thomas Sajay-Z went down on strikes his first time through. So Jay-Z 22 years old and he was a fifth round pick in 2020. Upstairs and that’s ball one. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Aronado stands at first with one out. And there’s a foul ball. Fights it off. You’ll see another. That one the other way. Croninworth the throw to second and their second double play of the day will end the fourth. Nothing across here this half. On now to the bottom of the fourth. It’s the Cardinals one and the Padres’s nothing back here in San Diego. Now the number two hitter Luis. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Swing and a base hit and they have their first base runner since the first inning. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already is bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. Machado in the box now takes strike one. Boo. Over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there on the mound. And Manny gets a piece. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Next one misses and the count is one and two. Way to lay off that pitch down. And that one is downstairs. Two balls, two strikes. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. In the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there. Gets a piece there. will do it again on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. Three and two now. Ground ball could be two on second. They get one relay to first double play. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. really good job all the way around. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merrill. And that’s in for a strike. Right through there for a strike. that misses the zone. One and two to count. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Two outs. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Two down. Nobody on. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Padres’s go down quietly. They’re down one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the catcher, Pedro Pah. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. Activity in the bullpen. Nick Pavetta up and loosening in the pen. Matsui the lefty warming up as well. Late swing fouled all. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. just overmatched on that fast right there. And it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat. Just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it. So digging in, Victor Scott. He walked and came around to score his first time up. Just missed well on the mound. Very efficient, able to produce an outcome it seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004, and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. Next offering is in for a strike. He’s been able to go inside as well as outside, effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. on the ground right side fires to first on the run and he gets him. Nicely done. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Mason Win in there at the knees for a strike. He’s been very consistent with his command out there on the mound. consistently throwing at the knees. Pretty impressive when a guy can repeat his delivery like this. Here’s a rip to short, but he’s there for the third out. One, two, three go to Cardinals, but they still lead it one- nothing. Bottom of the inning, Xander Bogard. These fans definitely want to get involved in the game. All it’s going to take is to get the leadoff man or even a base runner on. And that one fouled off that clips the corner. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. Ball one to Bogarts. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. This to third. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Oh, it’s been a struggle on offense for them in this one. So, maybe that wakes them up a little bit. You know, an error can certainly give the opposing lineup something to get excited about. You got somebody on base. though. We’ll see if they can make something of it. Stepping in for San Diego, Jose Glaciius. Fly to center his first time. And that skips in the dirt. the other way and there’s a base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second down now with nobody out. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. But now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. First and second, no outs. Next to hit, Jake Cronin work. And that is out of play. One and one in the dirt, but kept close. Nothing happening on the bases though. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Sunny Gray getting ready to go. Mton getting cranked up as well. there for a strike. One and two. And he hits a ground ball right side and that’s just foul. First and second, no outs. Last half of inning number five. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another that misses. Two and two. Eighth pitch of the bat coming up. got him looking and he did not like the call. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call and I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Steven Matz out of the game and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching. So out of the paint comes the rightander Sunny Gray. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. Now it’s going to be Bryce Johnson caught looking his first time up. There’s the strike at the dish looking to look the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play boo. No, that’s out. One out. Runners at first and second. Two on, one out. Foul ball still a one and two count. And misses inside. Two and two. Still two and two after the foul ball. Look out. That hit him. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. And now it’s Elias. He’s over one. Let’s go. Come on. That one’s in there. and one. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. That pitch gets the corner. That’s strike two. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Got him. Huge strike out there. Well, they were pretty much giving it to him right there. Playing the infield back. All you’re looking for on offense is a simple ground ball. You got a tie ball game. Not sure what he was thinking up there. Strike out looking is the last thing you want to see. Now you got to hope the next guy can pick you up and come with a big two out hit. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. Yeah. Don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. First pitch misses. If they don’t pick up at least one run here, this will be a very disappointing inning. When you load the bases with nobody out, you’ve got to get at least one run. You’re thinking two to three. So, they need a big hit right here. And that one fouled off. Bogarts the runner at third. Alacius over at second. Johnson at first. Two out of the inning. Paul Look, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Two outs. Got him swinging for the strikeout. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. A lot of adrenal. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Now pitching for the back. And they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher, Nick Pavetta, just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Now it’s Ivon Herrera. Ivon Herrera. And that misses ball one. swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. Merrill makes the catch. One down. Now batting the left fielder, Alec. So up next, Alec Burlson. Come on. Here we go. Defense. And it’s fouled away. One down. Base is empty. On the ground to third to first, but it pulls it off the bag. So, a man at first and next will be the cleanup hitter, Wilson Contrus. swings and sends a rocket to right. Drops for a hit. He couldn’t run it down. Lead runner around second and he’s got a double. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. Didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. Two on, one out. Nolan Aronado next up for the Cardinals. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Tatis brings it in with a nice running and grab. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. High in the air out to right. He’s got it. And that’s the third out. One hit, one error in the inning, but they wind up leaving two. Two, three, four, two up in the home half of the six. It’s the Cardinals one and the Padres’s nothing. And we’re back. There we go. Bottom six. And now the first baseman, Luis. Oh, Roy. Gray back to work. Just missed. That’s a ball. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Pitch is in there and that’s strike two to the right side to Jay-Z. Tosses to first. One away. Bottom of the six. Up next for the Padres, the designated hitter, Manny M. Here comes Manny Machado, one for two. You know, Boo, Petco Park seems to be transforming into Machado’s castle. I mean, nobody’s hit more home runs in this ballpark. And Machado passed Adrien Gonzalez for the top spot on the list in 2023. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. John King preparing to come on if needed. Romero warming up as well. And another ball. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. And Manny gets a piece. Home team down a run here in the bottom of the six. Sliced hard but foul. got him looking. That K is his third of the game. I’m not saying it it wasn’t a strike or, you know, it was a ball, whatever, but just the location with that velocity. It’s hard enough even if the velocity is not great, but that velocity, that location, tip your cap. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s, Jackson Merrill. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And a fast ball clips the outside corner for a strike. And that’s way high and it’s two and one. right through there for a strike. Got him. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. We go to the top of the seventh. Now it’s the second baseman Thomas Sajay-Z Pavetta goes 6′ 5 in 210 lbs and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2013. And that one a little below the knees and that is ball one. Action in the pen down there. Wandi Peralta the left-hander up and throwing. Morah also getting ready. And that misses ball two. Two balls, no strikes. There’s the strike. Two two down. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And now Pedro Pole for two in this one. Swing and a foul back. That’s out of play. Base is empty. One away here in the top half of inning number seven. two 02 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. That’s hard hit on the line. Merrill racing over to make the catch. Nothing instills more confidence in a team than a center fielder who makes a great play like that on the run. They can feed off the energy he brings. just from his playmaking abilities. Victor Scott getting ready to hit. He’s over for one. That’s in for a strike. Nasty pitch. Shortened the bun and missed it. And the count is 0 and2. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Man, this has been a real important inning in relief. I mean, so far they’ve been doing a great job holding that deficit at one. And that’s a base hit. So, the two out knock extends the inning and sends them back to the top of the order. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count. Up against it with two strikes right there. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Win at the plate and takes high there. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boo. He was late there. Strike one. One ball, one strike. fought off foul, but a short stop takes the ball. Good job to fight that one off. Scott off of first with two away. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Checks over to first back safely. Two two now. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Gets a piece and stays alive. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Due next runner on the go and it remains two and two. Two outs. Battling here as he fouls it away. Off the plate inside. And that’s ball three. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. out. So now two on and two outs. No, very close with the location right there. It’s just tough to get rewarded on the call with pitches near the top of the strike zone. Herrera. First and second, two outs. Ivon Herrera next up for the Cardinals. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0. Was good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished a little up and in just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. The one-1 and there’s the ball. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Swing going to grounder. Foul first base side. Two aboard, two outs. Got him looking. That ends the inning as they squander a chance to pick up some insurance. He’s in a tough spot. had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. John King. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Leading up here now the shortstop Xander Bogart and the slider just misses. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. looking to get the tying run on base. Two and one. Swing in a ball line to center. That’s a base hit. Off to a good start with a leadoff nine. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squirted up with the welltime swing, and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Jose Glacius the next up for the Padres’s. That one to first beats to second out there. Back to first. And that is a double play. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. first base has to get inside and create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Now at the plate, Jake Croninworth and that one clips the corner. Holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another two down. Nobody on and that just misses missed with a change up. Now two and two. drilled in the air high and deep right field back there and that lands inside the party folks for a home run. Bottoms up his ninth homer of the year and we are starting over. It’s 1-1. That’s exactly what this crowd wanted to see in this spot. He blasted that pitch. knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Bryce Johnson the next up for the Padres’s. First pitch and he just misses. Next offering is fouled back. Ball that’s outside. That one misses. Three and one. Elias Diaz in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Tapped out in front of the plate and that one handled. Throws to first and that is the third out of the inning. But this clutch home run gets us even again. Call even now at 1-1. You’re dialed into the show. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Wandy Peralta, left-handed batter at the plate. And he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Alec Burlson. 0 for three in this one. And that one fouled off. Fouled off. He was late. swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Tatis snags it on the run. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s safe extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Contrarus at the plate now. That’s ball one. All tied up and we’re in the top of the eighth. That one’s in there and a count one and one on the ground to the left down the line and it’s foul. One, two to Contreras. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. popped up. Cron gets there. He’s under it. Makes the grab and there’s two goal. The batter, the third base, Nolan Aronado. Here’s Nolan Aronado. Inside corner for a strike and it’s 0 and one up the middle. Oh, look at the stop. Throws from the seat of his pants and that’s a great play for the out. This guy’s anticipation is off the charts. Don’t see many shorts stops better than that. Great job to complete the play and end the inning. Now pitching back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Phil Mah and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. And here’s the catcher. The catcher, Alias Diaz. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Just that. That’s the ball. Now a highf fly ball out to left center. Burlson sizing this one up. Makes the catch. One down. Now batting right fielder. So with one down it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strike out. slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Next offering misses. One and one. Move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Kyle Ley, the young right-hander up and throwing. Number 49 getting loose as well. One down, base is empty. Swings and misses at the breaking ball in the dirt. One and two is the count. My drive and this might be trouble. And he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. When you can turn a ball around at 107 off the bat, it’s going to make you feel really good inside. If he elevates that a little bit more, it’s definitely out of here. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. One out, runner at second. Luis Arise stands in. One for three. on the ground and that chance handled in plenty of time to first. Now two away. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Manny Machado to the dish for a pivotal at bat. This is a big spot for a big time player. First pitch just misses. One out. just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. just missed. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike on a line. Makes the grab and that is the inning. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Now pitching for now. And on the mound, a closer Ron Marinacio. This is his third time out this year. the batter now. Jordan Walker 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. Jordan Walker. And that drops in for a strike. swings over the top of that one. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Got him swinging. He chased the change up and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Way out in front of that inside pitch there. Just exactly the opposite kind of approach that you want with two strikes. You want to let the ball travel. Make sure you recognize it. Try to shorten up so that you can at least put the ball in play. Clearly fooled, but I think even more so you question the two strike approach. Pinch hitter coming on Brendan Donovan. Well, they’re going with the lefty bat here. Boo. trying to improve that matchup for a very important at bat in this game. Swings and misses. It’s 0 and one. 0 and one. Base is empty. One away here in the top of the ninth. Late swing fouled to the left. One down, base is empty. That just misses. Now one and two. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline. Breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job. Missed with a change up. Two and two. Two balls, two strikes. That to right. Tatis after it. He’s got it. Two down. And now the catcher comes up to him. Pedro Pahes. First offering and it just misses one. and delivers outside. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Two outs. Swing and a ball lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck and caught on the warning track. Not quite enough behind that one. So they go quietly there onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. All tied 1-1. Back here at Petco Park. Bottom of the ninth. So digging in now for San Diego. Jackson Merrill. Mahon back to work and that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Ryan Helley, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Ball one. one and it is two and one. Swang and a miss. He’s had a tough day at the plate. Three strikeouts already. It’s hard not to think negative, but you got to find a way to somehow center up the baseball and put it in play. And that one misses up and in. Bounce full. Three and two. Xander Bogarts in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here in the air. Center field Scott. And there’s one away. The batter number two, shortstop, Xander. And here comes Sander Bogarts. Hit hard on the ground and up the middle. Base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. There you go. winning run is a board with one down. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it right on time. Good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield here in the bottom of the ninth, one out. And here is Jose Glacius. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Little bit low. Oh, too curve right there. Hitter kind of expects that. And good job of just showing that confidence and trying to get back into this count. And a swing and a miss. Two out. The batter number. Here’s the second base. Cronin work. He’s already homered in this game. Cronin work. Pitch misses outside. One and0. Two outs. But the winning run is at first. Right through there for a strike. And now two balls in a strike. Swinging a drive deep right field way back there. Out of here. Another homer. And they walk it off. Hitting a walk-off homer is the kind of thing you dream about growing up. You’re in the backyard, you’re creating the most pressure packed scenario, and what do you do? You come through with the big swing. Well, he was living a childhood moment right there. Nice swing in the bat. Nice win for the team. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon. Up. Come.
