MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Aug 1, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

Hello from Petco Park in beautiful downtown San Diego. We bring you Friday baseball on the show. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres’s. And now first base coming at you right after San Diego Padre almost ready to get underway. Our starting pitcher in this one you Darvish and Singi it’s unique these days but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels get some soft contact. let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo. Don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Ground ball right side, slings the first and the first out of the game is an easy one. Here’s a Cardinal lineup now. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Victor Scott. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Ivon Herrera in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Fly ball to right. Tatis hauls it in for the out. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent base. Batting third, the left. Two down, base is empty. Alec Burlson. Next up for the Cardinals. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. That’s outside. Ball one just off the inside edge. I think it’s very important to establish the inside part of the plate early. Sets the tone for the rest of the game. Two. Foul ball. Darbish delivers and it’s fouled away. Still two and two after the foul ball. Two out. Space is empty. Gets a piece and stays alive. Darvish kicks. Delivers. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. Merrill makes the play and it’s out number three. We’ll go to the bottom of the first. 0 0 back here in San Diego and on the hill in this one. Michael McGrevy. What do we need to know here? Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that RA will have dropped overtime. Bottom of the first and now the right fielder, Fernando Tatiz Jr. swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one. McGrevy, the tall righty. He features a fourseam fast ball, a slider, a curve, and he works in a change up. Right through there for a strike. No balls, two strikes. Goes down swinging for the strike out. Slider got him for strike three. Well, clearly just anxious right there and understandably so. And no two count. you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your swing. One down, base is empty. Check swing called strike and the count is 0 and two. Got away with that one. Left the curveball up a little bit. He’s going to have to finish it if it’s going to be an effective pitch. Breaking ball and that got him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. And now it’s Manny Machado. Machado splits the plate. Strike one. You know, Boo, Petco Park seems to be transforming into Machado’s castle. I mean, nobody’s hit more home runs in this ballpark. And Machado passed Adrien Gonzalez for the top spot on the list in 2023. And that’s downed away. Good miss with that change up away. He needs a ball on the ground for a double play. Minimize the potential threat right here on the hitter side. Nice job of laying off that pitch. Next pitch is outside. Runner on the go on the ground right side into the outfield base hit. And they’ll have runners at the corners after a one out single. That just a simple round ball the other way. Had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Runners at the corners here. One away. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. Runner on the move. Swung on. Popped up on the infield. win brings it in. That’s out number two. Not good. Take a look at the Padres’s line. This an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t going to click and unfortunately what happens is players press, they try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game. You’ve got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. Popped up. Donovan racing towards the line. Got it. Nice grab. And that will end the inning. Padres’s leave a pair scoreless after one. Back here at Petco Park, here comes Wilson. Contras cont. swearing a miss as he was late. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Check swing on an 02 first and yes, he offered at it. So now it’s Dolan Aronado. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively and first offering is fouled off. One down, base is empty. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. The throw is still in time. And they do get the out. He had more time than he thought right there. Probably didn’t have to barehand it, but he made it look nice, that’s for sure. Two outs, space is empty, and the batter will be the shortstop. Mason win. The shorts stop takes a ball. That one missed. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. And a slider in there for a strike. That one misses now. Three and one. That’s to third. Handled by Machado. Tosses to first. St. Louis goes down in order. Three up, three down for him. There we go to the bottom of inning number two. No score. We head to the bottom of the second. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand back. Gavin Sheets. Come on, Gavin. That misses the zone. One and0. Fast ball gets the corner at the knees. Carl Dixon working the plate in this one. You know, we often hear and talk about umpires being a pitcher umpire, but Boo Dixon maybe a little bit more hitter friendly than most. He’s kind of tight on the corners. So, we’ll see if that comes into play at all in this one. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Now, here’s Jake Cron, the second baseman. Jake Croninworth. And there’s a foul ball. Nobody out. Runner at first. In the air out towards left center. Scott makes the grab. One down. Batting eight. The shorts stop. Jose Glaciius. Jose Eacius the next to hit. Come on. Let’s keep it going. Check swing called strike. Check swing called strike. No balls, two strikes. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. Next one misses. Going to count one and two. Pretty standard high 02 fastball right there. if you’re smart to look for something down in the zone, but not too far. You don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. In the dirt. All right. 32. fouled off again and it remains three and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that one lifted in the air center field. Scott settles underneath it. Calls it in. And there’s two away. Batting night. The catcher, Elias Diaz. Here’s Elias Diaz. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. 0 and one. Sheets off of first with two away. inside. Just missed. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Walker makes the catch and the inning is over. One left for San Diego. We’ll move to the third with no score. And we’re back now. Here is Jordan Walker taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. Way back there. And that one is gone. A gigantic blast. His fourth home run of the season. It’s one nothing. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you can say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Diaz right there to make the grab and there’s one away. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. One out. Base is empty. Ball one there. Was good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Outside low. Two and two. Center field. Merrill under it. And there are two outs. Now batting the second base. back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Now it’s the second base. Brendan Donovan grounded out his first time. Swinging a foul out of play. Here comes a pitch and there’s a fly ball deep right field. a dive and he can’t haul it in and he’s got a double. Everything came together for him. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. So runner at second, two down. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. Flyed to right. His first time. Foul ball there. comes up empty. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. And he chases that one. They limit the damage here. One in the inning and it comes from a rather unlikely power source. It’s now one- nothing. Major League Baseball is on the show as we go to the last of the third and the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. Junior that catches the zone for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. And a foul ball. Next offering upstairs. One ball, two strikes to count. Got him swinging for the strikeout. Had him out front for strike three. Well, that’s a curve ball that I’m sure he wants back at the plate. Two strikes, the sort of pitch you’re hoping for. A bit of a mistake and I’d say in a very hitable location, but clearly the break was enough to get him to swing through it. Arise batting for the second time and that’s strike one. If I’m at the dish right now, I am aggressive over the heart of the plate. This guy’s been filling up the strike zone. So, you know, you’re going to get a good pitch to hit. And as nasty as this stuff is, you might as well take all three swings. The third baseman number 13. Here’s Manny Machado now. One for one with a single so far. There’s the strike. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. That one not close and one and one lined into left center. Base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. A late jump and I think that was the difference on the play. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Now a chance for Jackson Merrill. He’s 0 for one. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. And another ball. Machado off of first with two away. line drive. Makes the catch and over. Padres’s leave one. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Alec Burlson. First pitch doesn’t find the zone that clips a corner. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. Dives. What a play. How about the first base? So, a great diving catch and that was only possible because of the route he took to get there, right Chris? Yeah. Statcast shows us just how efficient that route to the ball was. In fact, that’s about as good as it gets. Pretty much a direct line to it. And perhaps he was a wide receiver in a different life. I don’t know. But man, great job to hold on all the way through the dive as well. No fumble caused by the ground. Contrarus batting with one down takes a strike. Contraras in his ninth season, 32 years old, and he was born in Venezuela. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. One down, base is empty. Swings through that and it’s a strike out. That K is his third of the game. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone, we’re seeing more fast balls in that location. And hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Ripped to short, fires over to first. That’s out number three. Nothing doing there for St. Louis, but they’re on top one- nothing. Back here in San Diego, here is Xander Bogart. Xander Bulgar that one outside and it’s one and0. You know, these Padres’s as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. Smoked on the ground to second. Tosses to first. Bogart’s retired. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Gavin Sheets digs in now. fouled off left side. Home team down a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and it’s even up one check swing appeal down to third. He did not go around the 2-1. Swings and pulls a foul to the right side. Swing and a ball driven out to center. That’s back there and that is gone. Home run number 15 on the year. hits 1-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself. At bat after at bat, he’s that confident. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. So it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Now the batter now Jake Cronin work. down to Mill for a strike. Throw and one, swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Walker makes the catch. Two down. The batter number seven, shortstop. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit fly to center his first time. The shorts stop takes a ball the other way. Oh, he gloves it. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. Call even now at 1-1. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Petco Park, we go to the top of the fifth. And now the shorts stop. Mason win. Darish back to work. And that’s in there at the knees. You know, these cards from what we’ve seen, I think it’s fair to wonder if they’ve been too patient at the plate. They found themselves behind in the count quite a bit. They’re trying to be patient, but it’s mostly resulting in outs, not base runners. And you could argue it’s making things more difficult at the plate. Breaking ball misses down and away. swings through that one for strike two. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. And now a flare into left. And that’s just foul. and he hits a ground ball right side. He steps on the bag and the lead off man set down in their half of the fielder number 18 Jordan Walker. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homered here in this one. in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. All tied up and we’re in the top of the fifth. A little out front there as he swings through it. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get to disadvant. Well, he’s notched four strikeouts now. He made pretty quick work of them right there. You look at the sequence, everything down at the knees and below. And some guys are good low ball hitters, but right there, they clearly had a plan to pound that part of the zone and he wasn’t able to put up much of a fight. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Pedro Pah popped out and foul ground first time through. That pitch gets the inside corner. Strike one. That one fouled off. Just missed. That one called just inside, I think. and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it though, but he clearly thought it clipped the corner. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Merrill moving under it. He’s got it. And that is out number three. Halfway home. All even one a piece. And we’re back. Now it’s Diaz, the catcher, Elias Diaz. And that drops in for a strike. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. line to left and that’s a fair ball. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in and it’s a leadoff double to start the bottom of the fifth. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. Back to the top of the lineup. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. Who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts and that one fouled off and a swing and a miss there. 02 is the count. This one in the dirt. No movement. Now a ball and two strikes. Man at second. That one just misses. Well, as a pitcher, when you make a big pitch down around the knees and don’t get the call, it’ll lead at you out there. So, some handle it a little bit better than others. And right here clearly letting the amp hear it a little bit. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming and a swing and a miss. The hattick. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strike out. And there’s one away. No, that slider was way out of the zone. And for me, it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand, not tracking it into the zone. And then also being a little bit anxious, not confident in your two strike approach. And so when a guy’s in that position, you get him to commit early. And a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there. Out of line out towards center. And there’s two down. The third baseman number 13, Manny Mach. So the go ahead run in scoring position. Here’s Machado. He’s two for two. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. First pitch, not close. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. And they hold him at third. 90 ft away with two out. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it right on time. Good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. Stepping in for San Diego, Jackson Merrill. And that misses ball one. Corners are occupied with two down. That’s in there. That’s strike one. And there’s the ball. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. That one misses. And that’s ball three. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Late swing fouled to the left. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Line drive. And that’s a base hit into center field. In comes a runner from third and it’s an RBI single and a 21 ball game now. Well done. Drives in the run. Other than ripping one into the gap or blasting one over the wall, there aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive in the center field. So that definitely felt good. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. Go for two in this one. Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. Two on, two outs. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Moved into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Sunny Gray, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Palante getting cranked up as well. Up and in. Down one and two. This hitter’s been seeing good velocity in the at bat. It’s kind of set up for that change up. He hasn’t seen it yet. Looks just like a fast ball out of the hand. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. And that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. And stepping in is the speedy Victor Scott. Go. You know, this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind. If he can get on, it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about. Got him. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast right there. And I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Now up for St. Louis. Brendan Donovan. One for two. That one finds the zone. Strike one. There’s a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. That’s off the inside corner and the count is one and two. Strike three and that’s two in a row. So he gets the call and picks up the strike out looking. Sometimes with a good hitter at the plate, he’ll be the one to get the benefit of the doubt if he lays off on a close pitch like that, but just not right there. Strike zone definitely expand a little bit with two strikes. So now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. Very high with that one. Ball one. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Next offering is downstairs. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office, even for the skippers, seeing the offense just sputter, not able to get anything going. And another ball. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. Bottom of the zone and a called strike. Check swing called strike. And it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. Machado throws to first in time. Darish gets a one, two, three. Offense held a check there. 678 do in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Padres’s two and the Cardinals one. New pitcher on here, Sunny Gray. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Sunny Gray. Well, one-run game. And here is Gavin Sheets. He’s already homerred in this game. Gray fills up the zone, forces contact. So, not a huge strikeout guy, but he’s going to make the hitters beat him. Doesn’t issue a lot of walks. So, the pressure is really on the batter to make something happen. Yeah, that’s fouled off. And although you like the fact that, you know, guy throws strikes, guy gets contact, and not always great contact. the fact that when you have runners on, if that ball’s in play, there’s still a good chance that a run gets pushed across whether it’s earned or not. Command in the zone is such a crucial part of it, right? You know, it’s not just throwing strikes, but it’s throwing quality strikes and having quality misses as well. What’s a quality miss? Missing just off the plate rather than over the plate. Croninworth. Next to hit, Jake Croninworth. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. He swings and fouls one off. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the sixth. cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, Glacius in the box for the third time today as he takes that one off the plate. Swing and a highf fly ball deep left field way back there. High bounce takes it over the fence. That’s an automatic double. That ball exploded off his bat and off the warning track as well as it bounced over the fence. And it sounded really good, too. He just put together a really nice swing and just missed a home run. So, runner at second, two down. Here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. And that one upstairs, ball one. outside low and the count now two and nothing. Love how this guy grinds out at bats. I mean, he’s down there at the bottom of the lineup in the nine hole, but he’s worked himself into a really good hitter’s count trying to pick up a two-out RBI. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball three. Fernando Tatiz Jr. on deck for the Padres’s Padres. And ball four to a just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and got to play was not going to help him out by swinging it something out of the zone. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. 0 for three with three strikeouts. This is again five in a row. And that’s off the inside edge. And now two and 0. That’s towards center. Scott should have this one and makes the grab and that is that. Padres’s leave a pair as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. We go to the top of the seventh now. The left fielder, Alec Burlson. He was late there. Strike one. Activity in the bullpen. Jason Adam appears to be getting loose. Morome getting loose as well. looking to get the tying run on base. That missed by a lot. Now one and two. Here’s a rocket out to left and there’s one down. Man, that’s so frustrating. You hit the ball hard, you understand the situation, you want to get on base and try to score that tying run, but no reward right there and just going to have to sit on it. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. Pitches in for a strike. 011. Oh, I’m impressed with that challenge pitch right there. Even with this slim lead, this guy’s not afraid to go right after these hitters. Strike two. This is the type of hitter his club wants at the plate, especially playing from behind. He’s hoping to start a rally right here. And that’s outside. One and two count. Hitting is all about anticipation. And right now, this lineup is struggling with it. Their swings are mistimed, and it’s produced a few ugly cuts here and there. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it falls and the tying run is on base. Now batting the third base and the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. That does it for you Darvish and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Jason Adams. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. One down. And up next for St. Louis, Nolan Aronado has grounded out a couple of times. Missed with a change up and that’s ball one. And another ball and he dodges that fast ball. Straighten him up a little bit. Three and0 and the 3-1. There’s the strike. 95 of that one with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. Swing and a high fly ball for foul and that’s out of play. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. Payoff pitch. Swung on. Belted. Ranging back. Makes the grab. Runner tagging for first. The throw to second is offline. Now that Mason win. Mason win. Next up for the Cardinals. He’s grounded out a couple of times. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. A short stop takes the ball. That’s in there. One ball, one strike. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. This one in the air. Arise, squeezes it, and that’s the third out. So, a job well done from the Frier bullpen that time. Midway in inning number seven, and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Padres’s two and the Cardinals one. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Jojo Romero. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. One of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Well, one more game. Luis Arise standing at a ball popped in the air. Aronado makes the grab. One away. Well, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited, came out of his mechanics, and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it off. Unfortunate for him. Romero, 28 years old, and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2016. And that one fouled off. One down, base is empty. That one to first and that chance handled. The flip to the pitcher covering Machado out on the play. Now batting center fielder Jackson Merrill. Jackson Merrill now at the plate. First pitch misses. Hit hard on the ground to short. Throw off line. He’s safe. And a nice job there to keep it from getting away. That’s a play you expect your shortstop to make pretty much every time. Pretty routine. Hard to tell if he didn’t get a great grip on it or the mechanics on him just broke down, but that gives this offense an extra out to work with. So, a man at first. Xander Bogarts the next up for the Padres’s. That one the other way. Donovan whips it to first. Bogarts retire. That’s the inning. One left for San Diego. They lead it 2-1. Leading off. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Jordan Walker. He blasted one out earlier in the third. Just a solo home run, but an important swing of the bat in this game. We’ve already seen him do it once. Can he do it again? Adam back to work. And that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. One’s the count. got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. No, two strike. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another swings and misses. Strike him out. Pretty big strike out right there to start this eighth inning. Down one, any lead on base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate. Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals right through there for a strike. Holding on to a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the eighth. just missed. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Foul ball still a one and two count. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And now the center fielder Scott went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Out to short. Delacius fires over to first and it’s a one two3 inning. Redbirds down quietly. They’re down two to one. Bottom of the inning. Here’s the left fielder Gavin Sheets. The left fielder Gavin Sheets. just miss. You know, these Padres’s digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve logged six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. That’s B on the ground right side. He takes it on his own. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. Here’s the second base, Jake Croninworth. and the first pitch misses for ball one. That one blasted deep to right, dives and makes the catch. That diving catch right there is the kind of play that just fires up the team. Whether it’s to make more great defensive plays or to get back in the dugout and swing the sticks. Two down, base is empty. Jose Glacius the next up for the Padres’s. Tap foul at the plate. Ground ball left side. Throws across the diamond. Third out. Nothing doing there for the Friars, but they still lead it two to one. Now, Ron Marinacio comes on trying to close it out. a chance at his first save of the year. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. One for three. Ripped to short, snagged on a bounce. Delacius fires over to first now. run gone in the ninth. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Perr in the box now. Takes strike one. Some hitters are just more confident they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. Crowd locked in right now. One run game here in the ninth. On the ground to third. Machado throws to first in time and they’re down to their last out. Oh, there’s a lot riding on that bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Now up for St. Louis. Alec Burlson 0 for three in this one. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Now one and one check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. One ball, two strikes. Marinacio is just one strike away. Hammered on a line to the left base hit and that puts the tying run on base. That’s tremendous fight from him and I know it’s got the dugout fired up down there down to the last strike and he comes up with a hit to keep the game alive. It ain’t over yet. So, a change being made at first base. Coming in as a pinch runner, Garrett Hson. Garrett runner at first with two away. Here’s Contrarus. Now, check swing called strength. Though, in this situation, the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit. But you got to stay within yourself. That one off the mark there. That’s ball one. Typically the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front. Make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up in the dirt. Not in time. He’s safe. And now a man into scoring position as a closer. He’s out there in that role for a reason. But even they lose the handle on one here and there, especially with all the nasty stuff coming out of bullpens these days. He’s making it a little interesting here with the tying run at second. You’re the top of the ninth. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Off the mark there and now it’s filled up. Three and two. Nolan Aronado in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Lifted to left and this should do it. He’s got it. Ball game. The Padres’s claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. Yeah, looked like the pitcher was getting into a little trouble there, but quickly brought out a pitch that isn’t what most hitters are looking for with that great velocity, but it was really good movement on the change up and a nice win today. Heat. Heat.
