Game two, the middle game of a three-game series between the visiting St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres’s. Tonight, we will see new catcher Freddy Ferine make his Padres’s debut behind the dish. Last night we saw the Padres’s extend their win streak to six. Tonight they are looking to extend it to seven, which would be their longest since the start of the season. The Padres’s have taken the field tonight led by their starting pitcher Randy Vasquez and gets ready for his 22nd start of the year for San Diego. And standing in Brendan Donovan to get it started. First pitch of this one is in the air to deep right field. Back goes Fernando onto the warning track. He leaps and makes the catch at the wall. Brandon Donovan sends it a long way, but it stays in the yard as Fernando makes a catch right in front of the fence. One down here in the first. Stevon Herrera now and that one cracked towards center. Merryill on his horse. He can’t get it. That’ll bounce off the middle of the running track. Herrera with a missile to center and the Cardinals have their first hit. A ringing double and Herrera snaps the 0 for 15. So one away. Herrera at second base. And here’s Alec Burles in the air to left field. Lauraniano towards the line. Pulls it up and makes the catch in fair ground for number two. Wilson Contreras is coming up. He had the only RBI of the night last night for the Cardinals. This one is out to right center field. Jackson Merrill moves over and under and makes the catch. It’ll end the top of the first inning. Well, Michael McGrevy has been waiting a week to exact a little revenge on the Padres’s. It didn’t go well for him back in St. Louis last time out. Now he faces them backto-back games. This is his hometown team. Little tacker hit toward Short. That’s a good start. And there’s your first out. Red hot is Louisa Arise right now riding a 14game hitting streak. Ties the longest of his career. During the streak 411 average OPS almost a thousand. Reaches out, pokes it to left. That’s a base hit. 15 straight games for Luis Arise. A new careerhigh in consecutive hits. Double here. Extra base hit to extend that to 15 games. Well, congratulations to Louis Arise. Manny Machado is on a hitting streak of nine, batting 500 with 19 hits, six extra base hits, and he has been driving in runs. Machado to left field. Did he get enough? It’s back. No, he didn’t. Off the top of the wall. Arise will score. Manny’s headed for second where he will be out. But he knocks in a run and the Padres’s strike first. He nearly homerred. Top of the wall. Padres’s leading one- nothing. and he extend his hitting streak now to 10. With one out, Machado starts to be aggressive and he tags out on that single with an RBI. Xander Bogarts leads off with the Padres’s ahead one- nothing in the bottom of the second inning and then a couple of the new guys. Trickled left side, not hit hard. Gorman in and out of the glove and Bogurts a reach. Cardinals have not played good defense in this series. This will go as another infield hit. Ryan O’Hert gets his first start in a Padres’s uniform at DH tonight. swung on and missed. A fast ball strikes out O’Harn. One out. One out, one on. Raone Lauriano now. Second straight start in left field. Takes it the other way. Base hit headed to the right field corner. Xander Bogarts is headed for third. Maybe beyond. Yep. Tim Leaper is going to wave him. Throw to the plate and Bogarts will be safe. Ramo Lauriano’s first hit is a Padre. Scores Bogarts from first and the Padres’s lead it two to nothing. And Cworth gets hit. Now the hit batsman keeps this inning going with still just the one out. First and third now for Freddy Fermine. His first at bat as a Padre and a ground ball right side for Fermine. Donovan will take a look at second but fire to first and a run will score. Floriano in the back door from third. Padres take a three nothing lead. Michael McGrevy back to work bottom of the third inning. He’s already trailing three nothing. Has to stop the bleeding here. Luis Arise doubled and scored his first time. Scorman can’t get it. Win can long throw and they got a rise by a quarter step and look at a rise pointing at Mason Win saying knock it off kid. Heck of a play that saved a hit for out number one. This is offensive play that not many people make. Jackson Merrill comes up. Jackson is now hit in 10 out of his last 11 games. Fly ball center field struck pretty well. Scott back at the wall gone. Jackson Merrill connects on his eighth of the year and the Padres’s take a four nothing lead. And this ball is pummeled to center 105 off the bat. 415 as Jackson Merrill picks up his eighth homer of the year. Jumping ahead here. 0 and2 Wilson Contrus leading it off here in the fourth inning. That’s it hard toward left. Long run Lauriano and that’s going to bounce off the base of the wall and Contras continues his good hitting here in San Diego. He’s got a leadoff double. His 29th of the season. Mason win 0 for one. He flyed out. There’s a soft liner toward short and over Bogart’s head. Contras didn’t get a great read on it. The Cardinals have their first hit with a runner in scoring position. Don’t score, but a threat now. First and third with one out. So Contras gets to third base here. Gorman will try to bring him home. Blinded to center and out of reach of Bogards. That’ll score Contrarus. Right off the end of the bat, Bogards just missed with a diving try up the middle, but Gorman extends his hitting streak and the Cardinals are on the board. It’s a 4-1 game. So, backto-back hits with runners in scoring position. Here’s Pes. He bounced out his first time. Swing and a drive. a hanger and Pass destroys that one into the Western Metal Supply Building. How’s that for your first hit against the Padres’s and how’s that for your 100th as a big leager? A game-tying three-run homer. Bravo, Pedro Pah with the lefty warming up in the bullpen. This was a short leash in a situation where the Cardinals needed a big hit and they got one. Pitching change. Jeremiah Estrada joins the party. He inherits a runner. He’s got some work to do. Nobody out and a four pitch walk here to Berles. There’s two Cardinals have reached here in the fifth inning. He’s got a scoreless streak going right now. 16 and 2/3. Swinging a miss and he struck him out. The split backto-back KS for Estrada. Two down. Mason Win singled his last time up. Scored a run. Line toward left. Did he keep it fair? He did. Mason Win will bring home Herrera. Here comes Berles. They’re going to wave him. throw to the plate is short hopped the drop. Face and win bails out the Cardinals with a double to left and St. Louis takes a six to4 lead. So how about the Cardinals? They trailed 4 nothing. They’ve now given McGrevy the lead with six unanswered runs. And at the top of the zone that strike three called his third strike out of the inning. Cardinals though get a couple of more runs. Boy, you’d love him to get through six here for Ali and the Cardinals who lead by two. A swing and a miss. That’s the third strikeout for McGrevy. Michael rolling merrily along now. But if that’s it, way to finish with a flourish. Michael McGrevy. He struck out three of the last four hitters. Four strikeouts in his home ballpark in San Diego. The San Clemeni kid is leading six to four. And the Cardinals will have the bases loaded. Alec Berles coming up. He’s walked twice. Cardinals have a chance to bust this baby wide open. Little pop into center. That’s going to get down for a base hit. That’ll score a run. Berles fights one off his knuckles. Victor Scott scores and the lead is three in the ninth inning. Infield halfway for the Padres’s. One out. 74 score. Fly ball center. Merrill’s going to retreat a step or two. Donovan at third. Tags. Here he comes. The throw comes into third. Contrarus with some ABC baseball. A sacrifice fly. It’s eight to four. Two down as a Glaciius now stands at third base. And if it’s going to continue for the Padres’s here tonight, Freddy Ferine, the number nine hitter, is going to have to reach base. Line to right and a base hit for Ferine. From third comes a Glacius and it’s eight to five. First hit the Padres’s uniform for Freddy Ferain. Second RBI of the night. Oh, here’s Fernando. 0 for four on the night. Driven to right. Well hit. Newar back up against the wall. He’s got it. That ends the ball game. And that one looked like it had a chance, but Newbar is back there to make the grab. And the Cardinals hold on and win this one 8 to five.
