MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Aug 3, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

So, just about set now. Today’s starting pitcher, you Darvish. Well, you can see his whip is a little above the league average. Not bad, but I think in this one, he’s going to need to control that a little bit better. Try to limit hitters from getting on base. Stay in that windup instead of the stretch. And when he does allow base runners be able to throw a pitch, he’s going to get a swing and miss, get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball. Brendan Donovan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. First pitch 110. Hey And there’s the ball. One strike. Hit in the air left field. Sheets sizes this one up. Puts it away for the owl. And there’s one away. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinal lineup. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris. Yeah, but again, that can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now and that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So, we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of. on Herrera in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Oh, that’s down. One out. Base is empty. And there’s the strike. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. swing and a miss and that’s strike two. That’s two and that’s ball three out to short. Alacius slings to first. That’s out number two. Batting third, the designated hitter, Alec Burlson. Two down, base is empty. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Alec Burlson. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. Just missed. Burlson hitting third in the lineup. And he’s usually a first baseman, but today he’s the designated hitter. Check swing and he went strike one. Some people say that first baseman kind of have the day off regularly because they don’t run around a whole lot, but when you think about it, they are involved in just about every single play and there’s a lot of stress that gets put on their legs. So, a welldeserved day at the DH spot for him. Two out space is empty. That misses. And now two balls and two strikes. Two down. Doon swing and a ball lifted left field that gets down for a hit. Batting four, the first baseman. So, two down and up next for St. Louis, Wilson Contrus. a bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Oh, one’s the counters on the ground to the left and it goes just foul. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Very dominant with that fast ball inside. Hitters going to be conscious of that. Now you have the outer half of the plate to work with out there on the mound. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. The Cards leave one. And now the Friars will get their first chance. No score. Back after this on the show. back here in San Diego. And for the Cardinals here this afternoon, it’s Miles Michael and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. Fernando Tatis Jr. the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. Boo Tatis is so athletic. He probably could have carved out a career in other sports if he wanted, but he grew up in a baseball family with baseball in his blood. out towards left center. Here makes the catch and there’s one gone. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup, this group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start, score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. Luis Az the next to hit takes ball one. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. He swings and fouls one off. Come on. In the air, left field down the line. Fair ball around first. Digging for two. The throw into second and he’ll reach second with one away. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position stepping in Manny Machado and that’s a strike. Oh and one arise leads off second with one gone in the inning. the other way and a foul ball. Band at second swing and a ball popped up. Aronado makes the grab. Two down. Batting fourth, the center fielder Jackson. So digging in now for San Diego, Jackson Merrill. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate under the Mendoza line so far this month. All right, Jackson. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Fouled off to the right. Rudder at second. Two down. going to count one and two. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. And downstairs. That one not close. And the count is filled up. Sam and Bogarts in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Man on second, two down. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Let’s go. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Eighth pitch of the bat coming up. Hey, you got this. gets a piece and stays alive. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches, still able to make some type of contact. So, now two on and two outs. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wallander. Very gritty and a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. And that one fouled off. First and second, two down. And he hits a ground ball right side and it’s just fouled. That was close. This one in the air center field. He’s got it. And that will end the inning. Padres’s leave a pair. Scoreless after one. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the third base, Nolan Oronado. Oronado. Go back to Darvish back to work. Ground ball left side and that’s just fouled. Nolan Aronado at the plate. Aronado guy who delivers big time power at the dish and will probably go down as one of the greatest defensive third baseman of all time. Pitch misses. Now one and two. And speaking of that defense, it’s hard to imagine that in high school, Aronado shared the left side of the infield with another elite defender, Matt Chapman at El Toro High School in California. Two strike. Three and two. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it falls. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Well, he didn’t get much of that one, but it’s going to look like a line drive in the box score tomorrow. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. The batter now, Johel Po, first pitch misses. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darvish. He has more than aundred wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo, my former teammate and a swing to miss. Eric Summersgill with home plate duty in this one. Kind of known for being generous with the corners, Chris. You know, I think that used to be a lot bigger deal in past eras where pitchers were working more in and out with their pitches. But yeah, we’ll see if those corners come into play in this one. Hey, no pitcher’s going to argue at all. Rudder takes off. Scored it out into left and it’s in there. Base hit. Lead runner to second. So, two on and nobody out. Two consecutive base hits for this team. That line drive isn’t going to light up Statcast or anything like that, but it gets the job done. And he just kind of caught it on a weird spot of the bat, but he didn’t get cheated with the swing, that’s for sure. Runner in scoring position now. And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Next to hit, Jordan Walker. And that one fouled off. Aronado the lead runner at second. Poso at first with no outs. Swings through that one out in front that time. swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and that is a big first down. You go the same pitch back to back. That’s how you want to do it. Set him up in the strike zone then extend a little bit from there and see if you can get him to chase. Nicely done with the slider right there. Now up for St. Lewis Thomas Sajay-Z right down to shoot. Strike one. Eddie Deals ground ball right side. Could be two offbalance feed. There’s one to first nod in time. Great effort there. Setting up the center fielder number 11, Victor Scott. So, up next, Victor Scott. How many times have we seen an early at bat change the course of a game? It happens every night in baseball, and maybe it happens again here. That’s outside. Ball one. Now he breaks as bad as it’s put in play. And that is that. No runs on two hits, no errors, and two men left stranded. Now to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here at Petco Park, bottom half of inning number two. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Croninworth. And there’s a curve through for a strike. Oh, one’s the count. And that one clips the corner. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Up and in. The countdown two and two. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Contras under it and he’s got it. And there’s one down. Batting seven. The shorts stop Jose Glacia next to hit. Jose Eacius that one called a strike and it’s 0 and one man. I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Just off the inside edge. I think it’s very important to establish the inside part of the plate early. sets the tone for the rest of the game. And one and two. Just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. No messing around with the pitch calling in that sequence right there. Four pitches, all fast balls. Yeah. And that makes me think that was the plan before the at bat even started. If you think you can simply just beat a guy with only your fast ball, why throw him anything else until he shows you he can handle it? Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left-hand bat. That takes low for ball one. Second inning here. No score. And the pitch is in for a strike. And now it’s even one and one. And that’s outside. Next pitch misses. Three and one. Now that’s a strike across the top of the zone. Full count and down on strikes. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing here this half. We play two full. We’re tied. Nothing. Nothing. Onto the third inning. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. on up the middle dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and the defense comes away with nothing. Now back left field and now it’s Ivon Herrera grounded out his first time off in there at the knees. Throwing water. And that drops in for a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Andy Otu swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Tatis pulls it in on the run. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Alec Burlson now at the plate. One for one with a single so far. Come on, San Diego. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. And the slider just misses. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. This one in the dirt. Foul ball there. Next one misses. Three and two now. Donovan the base runner at first with one out. Strike him out. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Merrill in and to his right. Calls it in. And there’s two away. And up to hit is Wilson Contras. He’s 0 for one. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. Hats and misses. It’s a strike out. So, one left for the Cardinals and we are still scoreless. Martine Maldonado up to the Padres. The catcher Marine Maldonado. That one close. Rule the ball. And that’s ball one. That one called just inside, I think. And on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. But he clearly thought it clipped the corner. Well struck left field. That’s back there. And that one is out of here. That’ll fire up the dugout. The Padres’s score first. It’s one- nothing. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. With a low 90s fast, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. patient and waited for it. His life BP all over again. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the last half of the third. Next offer is in for a strike. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrender, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. And it skips in the dirt. That one just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That misses the zone. And now three and two. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Very close off the outside corner. Could have easily been called a strike in that location. Luis Arise stands in. Doubled his first time. Michael throws to first. Tatis dives back in. That one’s in there. 0 and one. You know, these Padres’s doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient advance out of him. He’s only given up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there, and that might be the best news yet for this offense. Just missed. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Two-1 pitch is in there and the count is even. Two, two strike. Spoils the two strike pitch. And he’ll see another and a fast ball misses outside for a ball and it’s three and two. Caught him looking for the K. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. number 13 not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit him if they can. Here comes Manny Machado in the air left side. He makes the grab. Two down. The center fielder number three, Jackson Merrill. Jackson Merrill, the next up for the Padres’s. Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Tatis the runner at first with two gone. And at bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to Well, we’ll hold that thought as that’s the third out and we’ll end the inning. But the Padres’s draw first blood here on the solo shot. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Natto comes in to take his cuts and he’s already singled in this game. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004, and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. You know, these cards, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to now battling here as he fouls it away. Good eye right there. And now it was set down on strikes. Oh, that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him the chase. That’s just a bad approach right there. Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation, but man really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch. Yoel Poso next up for the Cardinals. A single his first time inside just missed. Poso goes 5′ 11 in 200 lb and he was born in Venezuela. Oh, that’s out. That’s through there for a strike. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Next offering is down low. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. Swing and a miss. Three and two now. Spin rate’s outstanding on that high fast ball. Really tough to hit. Foul ball and it remains a full cow. on the ground to short jump throw and they get the out. The right fielder number 18, Jordan. Man, Chris, a jump throw like that is certainly worthy of the Stackcast treatment. Let’s see what the numbers have to say about it. Yeah, these are some favorable numbers, Boo. This is the type of play that showcases his arm strength. I mean, he made it look easy, but I promise you that’s not a throw every shortstop can make, especially with that much behind it. So, two down now. And here is Jordan Walker. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two outs. to third. Machado slings it across and he has thrown four shut out innings. So they go quietly there. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Padres’s one and the Cardinals nothing. Now here’s Xander Bogart now for the Padres. The designated hitter, Xander Bogard, as he turns on the rubber and with that good live arm delivers. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. Now he gets it to the pitcher covering the bag and they get it out of the play. This is what it’s all about on that right side of the diamond when you got the first baseman involved in the pitcher as well. First baseman does a great job. Knocks the ball down, gets away from a little bit, doesn’t panic, the pitcher’s exactly where he’s supposed to be. Nice feed and a nice play for the out. Jake Cronin work the next to hit inside. Just missed and that one missing low. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that one clips the corner. Lifted in the air right field. Donovan. brings it in and there’s two away. That’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those can be a little tricky especially if the wind rolling around out there. Jose Glaciius the next up for the Padres’s went down on strikes his first time through. Right through there for a strike. 0 and one and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Three up, three down for San Diego, but they hold a one- nothing lead. Now it’s the short stop. Thomas, Thomas Saji, Darvish back to work. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Strike him out. The shorts stop takes the ball. That’s off the mark. Two and two. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. down. That one misses and now it’s filled up. Three and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. One down. The center fielder number 11, Victor Scott. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. Grounded out his first time. That one fouled off. Check swing and he went for a two. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck going back and it’s off the wall. Not stopping. He’s going for three and he’s got himself a triple. Good two strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. A lot of times in today’s game, right fielders are able to get to a ball that stays in like that, but he hit that one pretty well. And if he hits it just a little bit different on the barrel, it’s out of here easily. But there’s nothing wrong with the extra bases right there. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. So the lineup flips over and stepping in for the Cardinals, Brendan Donovan. There’s the strike. Scott stands at third with one gone in the inning. Just missed. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike 02 count instead, it’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. Next offering upstairs. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. Check swing strike and that is downstairs. And that’s ball three. Ivon Herrera in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Line drive makes the grab. Runner tags for home. He’ll score on the sack fly. We’re tied at one. Well, he hit that one pretty well. I think it would have been a lot more than a sack fly if not for that nice play by the outfielder to track it down. Good job of getting the run in. So digging in, Ivon Herrera for two in this one. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Boo. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Here’s the Cardinal DH, Alec Burlson. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two outs. Late swing. Fouled to the left. Darbish kicks. Delivers. Tap. Foul at the plate. He was a little out front, but did a good job keeping the hands back long enough to foul that pitch off. got three now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. Last half of the fifth coming up. Both tied 1-1. digging in. Gavin Sheets struck out looking his first time. Sheets that one outside and that is ball one. You know, these Padres’s just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. You really can’t pin it on one player because we’ve seen soft contact up and down this lineup. It’s time to make some adjustments because this approach is just off. The cause for these struggles is a little different for each hitter. For some, it’s timing and for others it’s mechanics. Whatever it is, they need to start hitting the ball harder. That one missed out towards right center field and that’ll get down for a hit. So a man on base to start the inning. Now batting catcher Martin Martine Maldonado digs in now. He’s already homerred in this game. First pitch misses. Way to lay off that pitch down. Highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. And a count one and two. Breaking ball misses down and away. Rudder at first with no outs here. Swing. Get a ball popped up. Donovan squeezes it, tries to get back and save. So man aboard, one down, and it’s Tatis at the plate. Swings through that one for strike one. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. Tatis waits and fouled off. Man at first, one away in the dirt and the runner holds. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Sunny Gray, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Grapho warming up as well. Outside low, two and two. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. High chopper to third, but it kicks foul. Oh, there’s a pitch we haven’t seen in a while. It’s going to be tough on the hitters if he can mix that in whenever he wants. Next offering upstairs on this count. Runner not known for speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boa away tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. Last half of inning number five. Swing and a ball driven out to center. That one carrying and it’s gone. Home run. a two-run homer. It’s 3-1. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. Look at that pure reaction. Fast ball up and in. Not an easy pitch to get to, but because it was just a reflex, he didn’t have time to get long with this swing. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Miles Michael departs and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. Oh yeah. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Sunonny Gray. He’s been so good against lefties for St. Louis. Number 54, Sunny Gray. And now it’s going to be Luis Araz. There’s a strike. Still only one out here in the inning. And now it’s even up. And that’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. And the sweeper is off the plate. And that just misses. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. outside and that is ball four. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the to help him out and make the call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch but take to earn that walk. Man at first with one gone. Manny Machado the next up for the Padres’s. First offering and it just misses. Arise stands at first with one out. swing and a high-fly ball out towards right field. Walker makes the grab for the second half. The center fielder number three, Jackson. Jackson Merrill getting ready to hit. That’s in there. Strike one. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Herrera coming on and that’ll do it. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now a 3-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. So out of the pen comes the right-hander Nick Paveta. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. Nick, here’s Contras now. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Fouled off. He was late. You know, these Cardinals really impressed me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. Grant his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. Not close with that one. And the count is one and two. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. Swings and misses. Now one gone in the top of the six. Here’s Nolan Aronado. One for two. Aronado. Ball one. No strikes. Base hit center field. So, a man aboard now with one away. Good extension on that swing. Took the pitch on the outside part of the plate and drove it up the middle. He let it travel just enough. And here’s the catcher, Johel Poso. Let’s get here. Ball one there. 10. And a foul ball. Here’s the pitch. Runner on the goal. Hit in the air out to center field. Merrill. Two down. Now batting right fielder Jordan Walker. And now the right fielder Jordan Walker. Come on. And the first offering is not close with the tying run at the plate. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And that’s outside. Ball two. that misses and it’s three and 0. Thomas Jay-Z in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Next off in there for a strike. Three and one. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. And ball four to a board. Walks out of the bullpin can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. First and second, two outs. And up next for St. Louis, Thomas Sajay. That clips the corner. That was just paint on the first pitch fast ball. Outside low and it’s one and one. Aronado at second. Walker on at first with two down and a count one and two. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Swing and a miss. And that is that a lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. And here is Xander Bulgar. The designated hitter Xander Bogart. There’s the strike. 01’s the count. Popped up. Donovan. Come on now. He’s there. He’s got it. One up. One down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Now it’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. And there’s a foul ball. ripped to third and caught. That at bat is a positive sign even though it probably doesn’t feel like it. He hit the ball hard, but it doesn’t always work out in your favor. Sometimes a defender is there to make a play. Jose Glaciius now at the plate who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. First pitch and he just misses. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the six. Swings through the fast ball up in the zone. I got a ball, one strike. Out to center. Scott sizing this one up. Makes the play and it’s out number three. Now pitching for Wandy Peralta gets handed the rock out of the pen. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. And now the center fielder, Victor Scott. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. That one almost got him. That’s ball two. That’s a base hit and a good start to the inning. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. Picked up an RBI in his last at bat. Still their only run of the game so far. And the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center. Merrill under it and it’s caught for the owl. Now batting left Ivon Herrera. Ivon Herrera will hit next. Now snap throw to first and he’s back in on a dive. That’s in there. Well, at bat can be a little bit of a dance. Strike one here, but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. That’s a little bit low. And that misses two and one. Line drive. There’s one. Double play. They can’t seem to break through. Inning over. Pitcher made the pitch and his players made the play behind him. Nice job. 463 inning ending double play. Now pitching. Phil M takes over on the mound and he has some nasty breaking stuff. M Gavin Sheets leading up the left fielder Gavin Sheets. And that’s the inside edge. And it’s one and0. Come on. There’s a swing and a drive and base hit and the leadoff man aboard. Now batting the catcher Martin Maldonado. Here’s the catcher to hit. Martin Maldonado. He blasted one out earlier in the third. Just a solo home run, but an important swing of the bat in this game. We’ve already seen him do it once. Can he do it again? M a 6’2 righty 31 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Sheets on at first. Nobody out. 0 and2 now as he swings through it. Move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Number 49. The hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Grapho also getting ready. fights it off. He’ll see another. That one misses and it’s one and two. That’s a strike out. Good looking sweeper there. Oh, nice job right there. He struck him out twice. The pitch before looked like it was strike three. Doesn’t get the call. Bears down. Goes another quality pitch for the strike out. Insteps El Nino. Fernando Tatiz Jr. can’t forget the two-run shot he launched out of here in the fifth. Yeah, one of the biggest swings of the game, Boog, as he looks to make even more of an impact in this at bat right here. A little bit high maybe. One and0 on the ground to third. Aronado the throw to second and that’s two. One hit in the inning, but no one left. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Padres’s three and the Cardinals won. Out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Jeremiah Estrada. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. They had a foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Robert Suarez, the closer of the staff, is throwing and that’s a little bit high and the count one and two. Wow, that’s a tough pitch to lay off. And that one is inside. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Swinging a ground ball. Oh, great stop over to first. Nicely done for the hour. Well, you can see right there he looks very comfortable going to the back hand. Nice diving stop. Gets up to complete the play. That’ll fire the team up for sure. Wilson Contreras now up to the plate 0 for three with three strikeouts. Off the mark there. Ball one. 10. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the eighth. Let’s go. Swing a miss. And that is strike two. Had a tough day at the plate. Three strikeouts already. It’s hard not to think negative, but you got to find a way to somehow center up the baseball and put it in play. One down. face is empty. Some heat there at 98 m anph. Not the best location with the fast ball on strike three, but when you’re pumping high 90s, you’ll get away with some of those. More margin for error. You know, the fast ball has become such a huge strikeout pitch in the sport. And I think a lot of it has to do with all the attention and emphasis on improved spin rates. These fast balls are just exploding out of the pitcher hands and jumping through the zone. Ripped to short. Eglacius fires over to first. St. Louis goes down in order. Redbirds down quietly and it remains a 3-1 ball game. Stepping in for San Diego, Luis. The first baseman, Luis Az. Mah back to work. And there’s the strike. Now that’s smacked to right center and it’s into the gap. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in. In safely, it’s a double and his second hit. Two hits for him in this one. both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. Great hands on that swing to take the inside pitch and drive it into the gap for the double. It’s easy to spin off a pitch like that, Boo. And can pull that thing foul, but that was perfect. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Here’s Manny Machado. 0 for three in this one. And that one is in for a strike. 01’s the count. Runner at second. Nobody out. That one catches the corner for a strike. 02 is the count. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Squirts away a little bit. You got this, man. It’s second. That missed by a lot. It’s two and two. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Diving, makes the grab. Runner tags at second. He makes it to third. Good base running to move up with only one out. He takes a huge gamble right there. If that ball gets by him, the run scores easily from second and the hitter maybe ends up on third. But a great job. Excellent focus on the dive and he robbed extra bases on that one. Next up is the cleanup spot for the Padres’s. Jackson Merrill. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Here’s a sackfly situation and he’s got to make sure he gets the ball out over the plate and get those arms extended. They’re trying to crowd him with the infield in. This be a big pickoff if he can push a run across. And that’s downstairs. One and one. Just missed. Next pitch is outside. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Swing at a highf fly ball deep left field. That’s back there. Makes the catch on the edge of the track. Runner tagging and heading for home. He’s into scoring the sack fly and they take a threerun lead. They had a chance to add to their lead right there and they did with the sack fly. Nice job of getting it done. Really good execution with that bat. Two out. Here’s Bogard now. That’s in there. That’s strike one. He didn’t want to give up that run, but he did. Got the fly ball. Sackf fly out. Now it’s time to attack these other guys. Get your team back in the dugout. Two down. Do on. That’s a ball. I got one ball, one strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Two down base is empty but one run across here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that one is downstairs. And it’s two and two. He goes down looking. One run on one base hit. No errors. and no one left. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Padres’s four and the Cardinals won. Now pitching for Robert Suarez on to try and close it out. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. And now the catcher comes up to him. Joho one for three. Just missed. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. And that one fouled off. just missed into center and a base hit. These hitters today are so great with handling velocity. They’re seeing high speeds day after day and a nice job of turning that one around. Jordan Walker getting ready to hit. Well, the leadoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Poso gets his lead at first with nobody out. just off the inside edge. Oh, he never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Oh, he’s showing a lot of conviction with the fast ball there. Not just because of the velocity, but also the ability to command it on the inside part of the plate. The last thing you want to do with two strikes is just get too far in there and it gets away and it hits the batter. So, when I see a two strike fast ball bunch up a guy like that, it tells me there’s a lot of confidence in that pitch. Say-Z batting with one down, takes the strike. that one in triple digits. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. The Padres’s trying to close out a three-run lead here at the top of the ninth. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Swinging in a miss now only one out remaining. Oh, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the leadoff single. Back to back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position to try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Scott the next to hit takes outside inside and it’s 2 and 0. Swinging a foul out of play that clips the corner. Suarez is just one strike away. And that is the ball game. Well, with this sixth win in a row, all of a sudden, you start to look around up and down the lineup to your left, to your right as a player, and you say, “You know what? We’re good.” Uh, we may have had some tough times earlier on, but this is a good team. And you start to expect this kind of play out of yourself. We’ll see if this translates into a longer winning streak than it is right now. 4-1 the final here today. for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long. Welcome.
