MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs Oakland Athletics – Aug 3, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
and welcome into the ballpark. Happy to have you with us. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks taking on the Athletics. All right, we’ll be back. If this one started after this just about to get started and pitching in this one for the A’s, Luis Severino and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten in this one. Corbin Carroll, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field. And it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Safe at second with a leadoff double. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. That ball was drilled 106 off the bat. And that’s the kind of feedback that tells you you’re right where you want to be with your swing mechanics. Here’s Catel Marte. And there’s the strike. Oh, this guy is so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. Ball one there. Look out. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him. And he hit him. First and second, no outs. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Heraldo Purdomo. Edge of the zone for a strike. It’s 0 and one. 0 and one. There’s the strike. popped up and it stays fair and they’ll score first. It’s one zip. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Adrien Del Castillo will hit next. And a first pitch fast is in for a strike. This might be the most pressure you put on this guy today. You got one run in, you got to try to get another one or maybe two. Swinging a dribbler foul for a space side. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Now it’s a rookie first baseman. Tristan English. First pitch and he just misses. Marte the lead runner at second. Perdomo over at first with one away. Foul ball there. Highfly ball out to left field. Sodstrom makes the grab for the second half. Left fieldielder. Some time to take a look at the Diamondbacks lineup. The home run a big part of the equation when it comes to this offense. Singing. They’re one of the better clubs in the league in terms of putting runs up via the homer. Yeah. And that makes them even more dangerous because they’re going to get their hits, but they’re also going to get those home runs and have runners on base, which is multiple runs out of one swing. So, yeah, you really have to try to manage a team like this and keep them contained. You can’t give up extra outs, whether that be via an error or a walk. Jake McCarthy in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike the other way and makes the play and that’s out number three but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s an early one- nothing lead. You’re dialed into the show. Back here with my pal Singi getting the nod in this one. Brandon Faulk. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable, and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Bottom of the first, here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. Ripped into right center. And that should be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second. And he’s there with a leadoff double. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Challenged him with the fast ball right in the heart of the zone and he was clearly ready to jump all over it. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. I’m liking what I’ve seen from him at the dish lately. Batting average this month over 400. Runner at second. Nobody out. Come on Nick, you can do this. Next offering is in for a strike. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Now a high-f fly ball out to left center. Puts it away for the out. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton. And even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. Brent Rooker stands in now and watches strike one. Felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count. Then you can play around a little bit more as it bat expands. Yo, one fought off. Foul runner at second here. One gone. He goes down looking. Well, even if you don’t feel great about it, you’ve got to swing the bat with two strikes in this situation. You’ve got the tying run out there in scoring position. Just put the ball in play. Maybe something good will happen. It just didn’t look like he understood the situation. And now a chance for Shay Langelers. And that drops in for a strike, baby. And that one fouled off swing and a miss for the strike out. And that’s strikeout number 100 on the year. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. And we’re back. Alec Thomas now. Alec Thomas. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. That’s a ball. Boo. He never moved because he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Left hand hitter waits. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Severino kicks, steals, spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Severino. And that’s downstairs and outside. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. And it remains two and two. That to right Cortez and out number one on the grab. catcher James. Here is James McCann. Right through there for a strike. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Soderstrom. They got it for out number two. Third base. Two down. Base is empty. Next to hit for Arizona, Bla1 Alexander. They had a foul ball. Two out. Space is empty. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two right side. Cortez settles under it and makes the catch and that’ll do it. We played an inning and a half. It’s one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the second. Here’s the left fielder Tyler Soder Stroke. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point, that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. that’s in there. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. And one and two. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Outside and it’s two and two. Two and two. swing and a high fly ball out towards right center field. Carol pulls it in for the out and there’s one down. 96 third base. Here’s Miguel and Duhar sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. There’s the strike. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Digging in, Carlos Cortez. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two down to and downstairs. One ball, one strike. Just missed. Two and one. That pitch gets the corner. Two and two. That one missed outside. And that is ball four. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Luis Rias now in the box. Comes up empty with a swing there. Inning number two. Now will bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. The A’s strand one and it remains one- nothing. Onto the third inning. Here’s the Diamondbacks leadoff hitter, Corbin Carroll. Singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. Backed off the plate that time and the one. He’s so solid. Calms the heart rate of the pitcher and the manager when the ball goes up in the air. You just automatically assume that it’s an out every time it’s hit in the air. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite paridial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. right through there for a strike. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end. Trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front. So, off speed pitches may be a good compliment to that fast ball. Swinging a foul straight back. One out. Base is empty. to third and that’s a fair ball. Now batting short. So man aboard next to hit. Peraldo Purdomo singled and drove in a run his first time through. And that one a little bit high. 10 turn here. [Music] That one fouled off and a one two. The short stop takes a ball. And there’s a ball. Count is full. Marte leads off first with one away. And ball four to a board. for the hitter. First and second, one out. Now at the plate, Adrien Del Castillo. That’s off the inside corner. One and0. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Off the mark there. Two and 0. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Flying drive and that’s a base hit into center field. Here’s the throw, but it’s offline. He will score. It’s two zip. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Two on, one out. English digs in now. First pitch misses. swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. That one ripped. can’t get to it as it drops into the corner. One run across. Plays the plate and they cut him down. leftielder Jake McCarthy. Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That one finds the corner. That’s strike one. Man on second. Two down. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. He’s dealing with a great two- strike hitter right here. The strikeout is not automatic. swing and a miss and he struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. They get two runs on three hits, no errors and one left. We head now to the home half of inning number three. hits the Diamondbacks three and the A’s nothing as we go to the last of the third and now the short stop Daryl Hern back to work fast ball is outside well the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there have a real quick inning get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay Hot the one knee high. That’s in for a strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Misses two and two. Two and two. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Just misses the mark outside the zone. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Not in time. An infield knock to start the inning. It doesn’t really matter where you are in the lineup. Your job is to get on base and try to start a rally if you’re leading off an inning. An infield single does the job right there. Now we’ll see if they can make something happen. So the lineup flips over and now here is Lawrence Butler. He hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the first. Swing and a miss. 0 and one. Let’s go. Go, baby. Let’s go. Breaking ball inside. And it’s one and one. And there’s a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Carol makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting first baseman Nick and now Nick Curts. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The 1-1 sliced hard but fouled. Hernese stands at first with one out. Check swing. Now it’ll appeal to third. Got him. Rusty Valentine rings him up. Now, the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker, went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Just missed. Next pitch is outside. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. And another ball. Two outs. And that hits the inside corner for a strike. out to short Purdomo. And that ends the inning. And we’re back onto the fourth. And now the center fielder, Alec Thomas. Thomas, 24 years old and he was a second round pick back in 2018. Inside ball one. You know, these Dbacks doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game. And the numbers back that up. They’re hitting everything thrown at them. Their contact rate is in the low 90s. It’s like they know what’s coming and that’s just pretty ridiculous what they’re doing right now. Those numbers are well above the major league average. And it’s fouled away. And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. James McCann in now. He’s 0 for one. And that is downstairs. And that is ball one. Swing and a miss. And he got him to chase. One and one. That’s the third and it stays fair. Turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. Runner on at first with one gone. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. Little bit low. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Ben Bowden appears to be getting loose. Lopez getting cranked up as well. man at first. One away. Ripped into right field. Base hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds at second with one gone. Right Corbin Carroll. So back to the top of the Arizona lineup. This is Corbin Carroll. One for two and the first pitch misses for ball one. to the right side and that’s a base hit. And they hold the runner at third, but the bases are loaded now with one out. Stringing them together. That’s three hits in a row. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Now the base is loaded. Big opportunity for them to break this game open. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Luis Severino gives way and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, number 50, left-handed batter at the plate, and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. So, bases all loaded up. Catel Marte up to the plate. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. No, that missed. That’s a ball. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or run. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. There’s the strike and it’s two and one. Base is loaded. One away. Off balance speed. There’s one. And that’s quick work out of the pen. One batter, two outs, inning over. Just trying to sneak one through with the bases loaded. But an excellent job by the defense to turn that one and get out of this jam. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the fourth. Here’s the catcher, Shay Langalers. Ball one, no strikes. You know, these athletics, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see, but I think they have to. That one missed now. Three and O. And the sweeper catches the plate. Swinging a foul out of play. Out towards left center. McCarthy trying to get there. Hooks it away for the out. And there’s one away. for the A’s leftielder. Tyler Soderstrom now at the plate. Flyed to right. His first time. Where’d that last pitch miss? Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that one fouled off. way high. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough. This one swung on and hit well way back there and foul as it bangs off the fence. That’s down and in. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Ground ball right side. Marte throws to first in time. Now that is third baseman. Miguel Anduhar. Two outs. Base is empty. Now the third baseman, Miguel Anduhar. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. In for a strike and one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. And that’s a little bit high. And the count even one and one. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. He’s got it. And that is out number three. A’s go quickly and quietly there. They trail it here. 3 nothing. New inning getting started and the batter will be the shortstop Heraldo Peromo. Well, these Diamondbacks doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. They’ve done a great job finding holes in the defense. Exactly half of their hits have come off the bat less than 90 mph. So, the ball isn’t exactly jumping. Oh, that got away from him. You got him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Man at first, nobody out. Adrien Del Castillo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Peromo on at first. Nobody out. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. One and one. That one missed. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Nobody out. First count in the dirt but kept close. Stays alive. Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time. Tristan English stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Oh, that’s that slurp right there. Extremely well. Talk about just a ton of break. So tough to get that barrel to. And that one is lifted in the air. Cortez moving under it. He makes the catch. And there’s two down. Now leftielder Jake And stepping in is the speedy Jake McCarthy. Go for two in this one. Yeah, that’s too high. He swings and fouls one off. So a foul ball makes it one and two. And they’ll do it again. One and two here. And that’s down and away. Two outs. just messes with that one. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. And a swing and a miss. And that is that. One left for the Diamondbacks, but they lead it three nothing. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And now the right fielder Carlos Cortez. First pitch just misses. You know, these A’s just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. That one finds the zone. One and two. And that one almost hit him. Straighten him up a little bit. just misses. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball, something in the zone because he does not want to allow the laidoff walk. That one to first English the flip to the pitcher covering and the lead off man set down in their half of the fifth. Luis, here’s Luis Oas 0 for one so far. first offering and it just misses. The A’s trailing by three. Last half of inning number five. Gets the outside corner with that one. One and one. flying drive and that’s a base hit out into center field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. Reached on an infield single his first time. to shore. Could be two. Here’s Marte for one. Double play. What a twin killing to end the inning. Still nothing on the scoreboard for him after five. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the A’s nothing. all set for the top of the six. Here’s the center fielder, Alec Thomas. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. No balls, one strike. Next offering is fouled back. Next pitch is outside. Tough to take a two strike change up that just missed. I think it froze him. Swaying and a miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. Here’s the catcher to hit James McCann. Little bit high and it’s one and0. Activity in the bullpen. Number 49 up and loosening in the pen. Base is empty, one away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Lifted in the air out to left. Soderstrom right there to make the grab. Two down. Third base, Bla1 Alexander. Two down. Base is empty. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That one called a strike. Go and one and a foul ball. The next pitch misses and a count one and two. One, two, two, and two. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes. So they go quietly there. Top of the order. D up in the home half of the six. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the A’s nothing. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the sixth, Lawrence Butler. Thought back to work. That clips the zone. That’s strike one. Activity in the Arizona bullpen. John Curtis up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Woodford warming up as well. That’s hard hit and alive. McCarthy makes the catch and there’s one down. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. Just missed. That’s a ball. That’s a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Lifted in the air right center field. Thomas gets under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s two down. Now batting Brent Rooker. Two outs. Base is empty. Brent Rooker the next to hit. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Definitely a frustrating day for the offense. But when they look at it, this guy’s had his best stuff. Been painting the corners, working on the edges, and changing speeds. Just a difficult one. You tip your cap. In for a strike, went with the sweeper. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the six. to go, baby. Let’s go. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Marte sizes this one up. Brings it in for the third out. Make it six shut out innings for him out there now. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the A’s nothing. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Jacob Lopez. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. Corbin Carroll getting ready to hit right Carol. Fast ball is outside Lopez 26 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season. gets a swing and a miss with the sweeper. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball outside. Still two and two after the foul ball. And a good eye there. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. went down on strikes. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Well, that right there is just a pitcher’s pitch. Tailing away from the hitter, low and away with some good action at the end. You know, even if he gets the bat to that ball, it’s probably just a weak ground ball to the opposite side. I tell you what, that’s a tremendous two- strike pitch. Catel Marte will hit next in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. One down. Base is empty. Not even close there. And that’s ball one. That clips the inside corner for a strike. Swing and a high-fly ball. Ragged field. Butler on the move. He makes the grab. That’s out number two. Now batting short stop. Two down. Base is empty. Heraldo Peromo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That one outside. One and0. The short stop takes the ball. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Not close with that one. And it’s 3 and 0. That just missed. He walked him on four pitches. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. So, two down. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Diamondbacks, Adrien Del Castillo. and one maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch not even close. drilled in the air high and deep right field going back. Caught just shy of the wall. So, no runs on, no hits, no errors, and one left off. Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the A’s nothing. [Music] We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. John Curtis. He last pitched two days ago. Now the catcher up to hit Shay Langalers. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate, good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. And that’s downstairs. And that is ball one. Yeah. And because he’s got the big arm, he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it. When you have a catcher that can throw like that, a pitcher doesn’t have to worry as much about the slide step. he can keep his mechanics intact and have a better opportunity of getting that hitter out with a swing and miss. Come on, sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. man aboard on the leadoff single. [Music] Tyler, next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom. That one finds the zone. Strike one. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. Yo, one swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Thomas pulls it down. One down. [Music] Now that is third base. And here is Miguel Anduhar. First pitch misses. That two seam fast is usually coupled with a slider away. And when a hitter’s conscious of the pitch in, it’s hard for him to cover middle away. And that’s where a pitcher can really finish off that batter. Go, baby. Let’s go. Two balls, no strikes. The count. Two balls, no strikes. Langeliers, the base runner at first with one out. Just missed. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Ground ball left side. Could be two. One at second. Double play. They can’t seem to break through. Inning over. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the A’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to begin the eighth. Stepping in Tristan English. And first offering is fouled off. And that one upstairs and that misses and it’s two and one. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Oh, great stop throw to first. And that’s a great play for the out. Cadillac reflexes on that one. Makes the dive. Has to get up. Clean exchange to throw a strike across the diamond. And what a tremendous play. Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. 0 for three in this one. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Now fly ball to right center. Carous it. Two away. Two outs. Base is empty. Alec Thomas stands in now for the Diamondbacks. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. Right through there for a strike. And that’s off the inside edge. And the count is one and one. ground ball left side and that’s just fouled. Throwing the ball well and they need this scoreless inning and relief right here. Been doing a good job keeping them in striking distance. Next offering in the dirt and it’s two and two and that just misses. Close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat out to short. Hernips it across and that’ll do it. So one, two, three go to Diamondbacks, but they lead it three nothing. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jake Woodford. And he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Now it’s the right fielder Carlos Cortez. The Athletics in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. Action in the pen down there. Kevin Ginkle, the closer getting cranked up for a possible save opportunity. Swings and misses. And now it’s even one and one. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three on the ground right side. He steps on the bag and a quick out number one. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Next up for the A’s, Luis Urias. just off the inside edge. [Music] Fought off foul. That’s a ball. Two balls, one strike. That one catches the zone. That’s strike two. Two and two. [Music] Right side. Takes it to the bag, steps on first, and it’s out number two. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Daryl Hernese. Up next for the A’s. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. And that’s fouled off. Two down. Nobody on. And that one inside and it hit him. Lawrence Butler digs in now. One for three. On the ground to third. Alexander. They get the force. That ends the frame. No runs on no hits, no errors, and one left. Through eight full, it’s the Diamondbacks three and the A’s nothing. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, number 49. Oh, he’s having an excellent season so far. ERA is under two. Lot of flexibility coming out of the bullpen. And now the catcher comes up to him. James McCanname fouls one off. This ball’s chopped on the ground on Duhar. rolls across the diamond and they get the leadoff man in the ninth. Now batting third base Alexander Bla1 Alexander the next to hit. It’s interesting he plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Next pitch is outside. What about him playing another position on defense? One that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting rightielder Corbin Carroll. Two down, base is empty. And now the right fielder Corbin Carroll. Chop to first. Curts handles, throws to first and that is that. Three up, three down for him there. 234 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the A’s nothing. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Kevin Gle. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. Curts stands in here. Leaves that one off the inside. Big bat right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. Little bit low and a count. Two and a one. And there’s a ball. Threeon one. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk that could jump start an offense that’s really struggle to score in this one. Don’t want to wake a team up with the free pass. Now, the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker. and foul ball. Next pitch inside and it’s a ball and a strike. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Gets his lead at first with nobody out. Good job to fight that one off. That’s not now a screamer into the outfield. Carol makes the grab on the run. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be. If he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner, that’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langalers. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Just amazing to me how many closers and back-end relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never even had a chance. And a 1-1. Swinging a miss at a slider. One and two. That one missed. The A’s trailing by three here. The last half of inning number nine. Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. And they’re down to their last out. Tyler Soderstroke up next for the A’s. 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. and he swings and misses and it’s nothing at one and one. The Dbacks leading by three. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. 0 and two. This could end it. Good eye in that spot. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Next offering is down low. Definitely a swinging miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. upstairs. Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. And there’s a base hit to left. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. That’s tremendous fight from him. And I know it’s got the dugout fired up down there. Down to the last strike and he comes up with a hit to keep the game alive. It ain’t over yet. Now Miguel on Duhar swing in a liner. Base hit out into right center field headed to the plate. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and it’s now a two-run game. just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Kevin Ginkle out of the game and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Anthony Dclani on a pitch here. This guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season. Making a move at third. And here’s the pinch runner number 32. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Carlos Cortez up next for the A’s and that one fouled off. Two on, two outs. Squirts away a little bit. Runners stay where they are. That’s ball one. [Music] The 1-1. That’s down and in. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. That one misses. And now three and one. 3-1. two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. They’re down to their final strike. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Haters got to stay focused on the pitch. He walked in and that will keep things going. Walks out of the bullpin can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly and there’s some hot water trying to protect this lead. So up next, Luis Rias and there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. First pitch doesn’t find a zone. One and0. Two outs. Both the tying and winning runs are on. [Music] So the tying run at second and a count one and two. The Athletics down to their final strike. He got him and that’s the ball game. Well, B, four games wasn’t too long of a losing streak, but they’re definitely happy to be back in the win column. Now you can turn things around, get on the right track, and probably start a winning streak from here. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami saying so long
