MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Aug 3, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Hello and welcome. Thanks for joining us. We’ve got baseball on the show. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres’s. First pitch coming your way next. So, almost ready to get underway and towing the slab number 18. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this, every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. On the ground right side, Croninworth throws on the first and an easy out to start the game. Here’s a Cardinal lineup now. This team can really pile up the runs, Chris. They’re among the top teams in scoring this year. Yeah, and when you can get a lead and be out in front, it really changes what that opposing manager can do with the bullpen. And on top of that, it helps your own pitching staff. It gives them more margin for error. So instead of pitchers squeezing the ball, trying to throw darts and be perfect, they can relax, let the ball come out of their hands, and pitch effectively. So that offense and the ability to score runs also helps the pitching and the defense. Merrill on the move to the gap, hauls it in for the out. That’s out number two. Outing third, the left fielder, Alec Burl. Two out, space is empty. Here’s the left fielder, Alec Burlson. Burlson measures 6’2 in 225 lbs and he was a second round pick in 2020. Next one is off the play at a countdown two and nothing. in there at the knees outside and the count is three and one. Two out space is empty. Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. Outside and that is ball. face. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Burlson off of first with two away. That’s in for a strike. And there’s a ball. Padres. That’s a ball in the dirt. Three and one. the pitch. So now two on and two outs. Two walks in the first has to be some cause for concern. I mean, you’re talking about a guy you want to pitch deep into the ball game. It’s not going to help with the pitch count right there. They can’t afford to hand out free bases at this rate. Here’s Nolan Aronado and that misses. One and0. One. Two on, two outs. A little out front there as he swings through it. Betty really sells the change up with that arm action. Slap the other way. Foul. And Nado is set down on strikes. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Back here with my pal Singi on the mound for this one, Steven Matz. Singy, he’s kind of a road warrior. Yeah, I definitely say so. You know, some guys shrink a little bit on the road. They’re so used to just, you know, having the comfort of being at home and having the fans behind them. But this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment. So when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes, you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark. Tatiz weights. That’s a foul ball. That misses. And the count one and two. Swing and a miss. And he’s down on strikes. One away. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Luis Arise stands in. That one catches the corner for a strike. One down. Base is empty. Popped up right side. Contrarus has a beat on it. Makes the grab. Two down. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport, Jackson Merrill. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Manny Machado stands in here. Takes ball one low. Right side hard hit. Fires over to first. Machado is out. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars. Scoreless after one. Back here at Petco Park. New inning getting started. And now the right fielder Jordan Walker. Walker up the middle. Boots it. Safe at first. No play. We’ll see how they score this. And up next for St. Louis, Thomas Sajay-Z run takes off. Swing and a highf fly ball in the air left field. Johnson makes the catch and there’s one gone. Batting eight. The catcher Pedro Pahes. Next to hit Pedro Pahes. That’s two. Let’s go. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball wall. And that’s downstairs and outside. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. Just missed. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. And there’s the automatic. Clearly taking all the way there in that 3 0 count. It was a cookie right down the middle. fouls one away and now three and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. There’s a swing and a drive. That one carrying gone off the L board. That did some damage. A massive home run. His seventh home run of the season. And that gives him a lead. It’s two nothing. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Base is empty, one away. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Victor Scott. And that drops in for a strike. Now one and one. Our umpire for this one, Freddy Ferguson, a consistent umpire by all accounts. Yeah, I think the book on him is that he’s not necessarily by the book with his strike zone, but once you figure out where he’s calling strikes, you can pretty much count on him to stay with that throughout the game off the plate inside. Two and one. Fans don’t really understand the familiarity and relationship players and coaches have with umpires. I mean, you see them a lot. Yeah, B. They’re all out there trying to do their best and perform at a high level. So when you respect that, I think over time you can develop a relationship with them. We got a full count. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four umpires, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. One ball, no strikes. slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. That’s a little bit low. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in here in the top of the second. And that one is inside. hit in the air right field. Tatis makes the grab and that is that. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer and it’s two zip. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in San Diego, we head to the bottom of the second. And now the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. Merrill. Mats back to work. That pitch in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. Snowballs, two strikes on the ground to third. Aronado sends it across to first. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, get the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. Here’s Bogards. Now, he’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season, Chris. That’s a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. Back to the mound. It hit him in there safely. And now they’ll hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. One gone runner at first. Hosea Glacius will hit next. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does on the ground left side. Six, four, three, double play and the inning is over. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. We played two full. It’s the Cardinals two and the Padres’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Onto the third inning. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. Herrera. First offering and it just misses. Swang and a line drive ripped out of the right center. That’s a base hit and the leadoff man aboard. Now show a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Now at the plate, Alec Burlson. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Move to first. Herrera dives back in safely. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. Here gets his lead at first. Nobody out there. The two-1 hammered but foul. Well, that ball was hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance, but if you’re the pitcher out there on the mound, you execute it. Just a long strike. You go after him and finish him off. Highf fly ball out to center field. Merrill calls it in and there’s one away. Now batting the first base, Wilson Contraras. Here’s Contraras. Now he reached out to walk his first time. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Next offering misses down and away. Man at first. One away. Fast ball is outside. That’s off the mark now. Three and one. There’s the strike. Good job to fight that one off. Home run number 15 on the year and they add to their lead. It’s 4 nothing. He ran the count full and saved his best swing for last. That was a battle and he won. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. So, one out, nobody on. Here’s the third baseman, Nolan Aronado. And that one is lifted in the air. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two away. The right fielder number 18, Jordan Walker. Two down, base is empty. Jordan Walker getting ready to hit. Reached on an infield single his first time. Though Chris through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Tatis makes the grab and that’s the inning. Two runs for St. Louis on this blast. It’s now a four nothing ball game. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. Now here’s Jake Cronin. Jake Croninworth. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy. In fact, the Rays used him that way. And another ball. Ball up the middle. Whips it to first. That takes care of Croninworth. Batting eight. The left fielder Bryce Johnson. Next for the Padres’s, Bryce Johnson. Come on. Outside low. Ball one. One out. Base is empty. That one finds the zone. And the count one and one. and a swing and a miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Walker pulls it down and there’s two gone. Batting night, the catcher, Alias. Here’s Elias Diaz in there for strike one. Just a ball. in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. And that’s downed away. Two and two. Still two and two after the foul ball. Ground ball up the middle. Sends it to first. Inning over. Three up, three down for San Diego. They’re on the short end of a four nothing score. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Nick Paveta. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring them up. Now it’s the second baseman Thomas fly to left his first time. Pavetta 32 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Yuki Matsui, a left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Number 66, a right-hander loosening up as well. Next pitch inside and the count is one and one in the air right field. Tatiz drifts towards it and out number one on the grab. Now batting catcher Pedro P. And here’s the catcher Pedro Pahes. He’s already homerred here in this one. Right through there for a strike. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and two now. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. In the dirt now. One and two. And that skips in the dirt. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. gets a piece and stays alive. This one in the air. Diaz in position. Two away. The center fielder number 11, Victor Scott. Two outs. Space is empty. And now here’s a speed threat. Outfielder Victor Scott struck out swinging his first time. Gets under and pops it up. Brings it in for the third out. And down in order go the Cardinals. They lead four nothing. Bottom four. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. You know, these Padres’s as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. There we go. Now batting first baseman Louie. Dominant performance for him today. Just two hits allowed so far. No runs across either. And he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced. So I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much. Luis Araz the next up for the Padres’s. First time up was a pop out and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. That breaking ball is in for a strike. And quickly it is nothing at two. Out towards right center. That’s well struck and that should be extra bases. Here comes Tatis around third. He will score. He went up there and got it with two strikes. I’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands. I’m going to be aggressive. It was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do. So, nice job right there coming back in that it at runner in scoring position. No outs now. Machado up here. Grounded out his first time up. This one high in the air to left center. Burlson makes the play. Grounder tags second. And he’s in safely at third with one out. Now batting the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. Stepping in for San Diego, Jackson Merrill. First time up, he grounded to third. This one ripped but fouled to the right. And the lefty with the 01 popped in the air left field. Burlson drops into the glove. Runner tagging from third. He’s in to score the sack fly. And it’s now a two-run game. Oh, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough. And that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the here is Xander Bulgart’s first pitch misses and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Swings and misses. Pulled the string on the change up. So they get a couple of runs on two hits. No errors and no one left on. We played four. It’s the Cardinals four and the Padres’s two. Back here in San Diego, we go to the top of the fifth now up for St. Louis. Mason win the short stop. Mason win. Pavetta back to work. That’s in there. Strike one. You know, these Cardinals putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. The shorts stop takes a ball on the ground of first. Arise. He takes it on his own. One away here in the fifth. Now batting the designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. Next is the designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. one for two. Swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can’t forget it. He flexes his power with that swing. Home run number 10 on the year and they boost their lead. It’s 52. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. That one was a hanger and pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there, he made him pay. Now the left fielder, Alec Burlson. He’s 0 for one and first offering is fouled off. One down. Base is empty. In the air out towards right center. Merryill sizing this one up. Brings it in. And there’s two down. Up next for the Cardinals, the first baseman, Wilson. Two down, base is empty. Wilson Contrus next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homerred in this game. Pitch in the dirt. Ball one. Two down, bases empty, but one run across and we’re in the top of the fifth. This to third. A Glacius. That’s a third out. St. Louis tags on one with a homer. It’s now 52. Major League Baseball is on the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth. digging in now for San Diego. Jose Glacius. That’s to third. Aronado on to first and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Now batting the second baseman, Jake Cronin work. Jake Cronin work the next up for the Padres’s. Grounded out his first time. He gets there with the slide. Gathers and throws. Nicely done for the out. Just so impressed with the movement on that play. The footwork was excellent. The arm strength was there and of course the most important part was getting the out. Next for the Padres’s, Bryce Johnson flyed to right his first time. Swinging a ground ball and it goes just foul. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. And that one hit to first. And that’s just foul. Foul ball still 0 and two. Two down. Nobody on. That one missed. started after the one-two pitch. Appeal to first and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. Padres’s down in order and the deficit remains 52. Back here at Petco Park. Start of the six. John Shami with Chris Singleton and leading off Nolan Aronado. And it’s fouled away. Swings and misses. And one away. Jordan Walker digs in now. Right fielder Jordan Walker. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. And that one is inside ball one. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. One down. Base is empty. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Up next for the Cardinals, the second baseman, Thomas Saji. So up next, Thomas Sajay-Z for two in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Walker leads off first with one away. That one found hard the other way. Pavetta over to first. No, he’s in there. swing and a miss as he was out front. The count got him looking for the K. That was pretty nasty. Now that Bottom of the zone and a cold strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Swing and a ball popped up. Croninworth snags it and that’ll do it. So, one hit is all they get. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Cardinals five and the Padres’s two. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Sunny Gray. He last pitched four days ago, so he should feel pretty fresh. Sunny Gray. And now it’s Elias Diaz. Grounded out to short. This first trip and that is out of play. You know, these Padres’s just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. and a swing and a miss. One out. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. So, the San Diego batting order turns over. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Fernando Tatiz Jr. signed by the White Socks 2015 for $700,000 and then eventually moved in the James Shields trade in June of 2016. And now the count is even. Movement to the bullpen for the Cardinals. John King, a lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Romero the power lefty up as well. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. He’s there. He’s got it. Two up, two down. Now batting first base. Luis now at the plate. in for a strike. One and one. Just miss. That’s the ball. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. The Padres’s trailing by three here in the bottom of the six out to short win and that will end the inning. Three up, three down that time. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Cardinals five and the Padres’s two. Now pitching for the welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Robert Suarez. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Here’s the center fielder, Victor Scott. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away outside with a breaking ball. That’s a ball. Full count. in the air fairly deep to right field. Tatis makes the grab. One down. Now batting shortstop Mason Win. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man. Mason Win 0 for three in this one. Suarez a 6-2 righty. 210 lbs and he was born at Venezuela and that drops in for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. One down. Base is empty. Bunting for a hit. Bare hand has to hurry on the money. Nice play. Perhaps he rushed just a little bit. Didn’t set the angle as the infield was back right there. And that’s pretty much a gimme for a blunt base hit. Just didn’t quite put it where he wanted to right there. Two outs. Base is empty. And now the DH Ivon Herrera. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. drilled in the air high and deep right field to the warning track. Makes the catch and welcome back to the ballpark. ready to go for the last half of the inning. Here’s Manny Machado to start it off. Machado. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Wow. Next offering is fouled back. out of the ground to third. Aronado tosses across to first. Machado out of the play. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make, you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw. Now, it’s going to be Jackson Merrill. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Fouled off to the right. The Cardinals leading by three here in the bottom of the seventh. Swing and he breaks his bat. Grabs it bare-handed. Oh, the throw is wild. Around first and hustling for second and he’ll reach second with one away. Well, that was a throw that just shouldn’t have been made. They scored a single and an error. So, the official score doesn’t believe a good throw would have gotten an out. And neither do I. We can’t hear it from up here, but I wonder if anyone was telling him just to eat the throw. You know, that’s where communication on the infield can sometimes help out a ton. Boggarts in the box again. Takes a strike. Man at second. Ball one to Bogarts. And that’s in there at the knees. And a ground ball to first. Nice grab from his backside. It’s there and that’s a great play. Well, he makes a great decision to go ahead and dive to stop that ball. Nice little flip to the pitcher covering. Those are those PFPs, pitchers fielding plays. Jose Glaciius gets a chance to hit now. Bounce to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Padres’s leave one. They trail at 5-2. And we’re back. Now it’s going to be Alec Burlson. Burlson. Suarez back to work. Ripped on the ground to second. Tosses to first. And that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Now batting the first baseman, Wilson. Here comes Wilson Contreras. And first offering is fouled off. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. And that’s fouled off. swing and a miss. Struck him out and now to G. Just overmatched on that fast right there. And it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat. Just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it. Foul ball. Just misses with that one. Really good take, especially with two strikes. swing and a miss. Struck him out. St. Louis goes down in order. Redbirds down quietly. They’re still out in front. 5-2. now pitching. Now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, John King. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. And here is Jake has grounded out a couple of times. The Padres’s in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. First pitch misses. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closure’s coming in. That misses off the outside edge. No strikes up the middle. Jump throw and it beats him. What a play. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. Johnson. And now here is Bryce Johnson. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. got him looking. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. The catcher number two base is empty. And now the catcher comes up to him. Elias Diaz struck out on just three pitches last time. And ball one. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. Hey, if you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. Next pitch is downstairs. That one ripped but fouled. Lifted in the air down the left side and it drops in and that gives Fernando Tatis Jr. a chance to hit with two out. Now batting the right fielder and the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. He’s a guy Chris’s highlights include some of the best throws from the outfield that you will ever see. Definitely one of the best arms of the sport. Yeah, the infielders and the catcher can never give up on a play because if this guy thinks he has a chance, he’s going to throw it from the warning track if he has to. Just missed. Diaz leads off first with two down to the inning. Next pitch downstairs. And that’s ball two. He swings and fouls one off. Two outs. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strike out. Now pitching. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mouth, Jason Adams. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Jordan Walker getting ready to hit. The right fielder number 18, Jordan Walker to the right side. Arise takes it to the bag and the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Thomas Saji. Thomas Sajayzy. Next up for the Cardinals, That one close. Rule the ball and it’s one and0. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Yuki Matsui getting loose out there. Number 66 getting loose as well. And it’s even up. Backto-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. One down. Base is empty. That one missing inside. And there’s a fly ball deep right field. Dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. around second now. Going for three. The relay. The tag. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. They probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip the cap. Two outs. Space is empty. Pedro Pah. Next up for the Cardinals. First offering misses badly for ball one. And he gets that fast ball by him upstairs. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Next offering is down low. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. In the air to left, down the line. Johnson on his way over makes the catch and that is that one hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. 234 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Cardinals five and the Padres’s two. Back now and on the mound the closer Ryan Hley. Well, he’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season averaging more than one per inning. Ryan Hley. So digging in Luis, the first base, Luis. There’s the strike. And a curve is down and in. Liner and this could be trouble. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Putting some good swings on the ball. That’s his second extra base hit in this one. A lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielder’s head. That’s what I’m trying to do. Just keep that approach simple. And right there, it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the gap nicely. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now it’s the DH Manny Machado. And Manny gets a piece. All season long. He’s racked up a number of saves and sometimes the adrenaline doesn’t get high enough until there’s a runner or two on base. 101 on the gun. Swing and a miss. Just about gives his skipper a heart attack, but that’s where he functions best. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout. There’s one away. Well, clearly just anxious right there. And understandably so, no two count. You feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your sway. Merryill in the box now. No balls in a strike. Swinging a foul out of play. One out and a runner at second. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Padres’s with only one out remaining. Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. Laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to where you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it and not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it. Now, Xander Bogarts gets a chance to hit right through there for a strike. man on second. Two down and there’s a ball. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. And strike two. One and two is the count. One strike away. Foul ball still a one and two count. man at second. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. Next pitch off the play. Two and two. He’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. Some timely hitting, runs on the board, key pitching and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. And your final score, 52 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
