The Braves ZOOM to victory in the Speedway Classic! | Morning Lineup (MLB Daily Recap)

Welcome to Major League Baseball’s Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway. First Major League Baseball game ever in the state of Tennessee. Man, how cool is this? The Braves and the Reds. Big League Baseball from Bristol [Music] from MLB.com. This is the Morning Lineup Podcast. I’m your host, Anthony Castro. Today is Monday, August 4th, and if you’ve got the need for Speedway results, you’ve come to the right place. On today’s show, we’re going to recap the Speedway Classic and also take a look at a team that has surprisingly sped its way back to 500. We’ll also cover everything else you need to know about baseball today in less than 10 minutes. I better get motoring along. Heavy rains in Bristol, Tennessee on Saturday night threw plans for the 2025 MLB Speedway Classic Off track. Though the grounds crew raced to try to keep up with the storm, and there was an attempt to play the game about 2 and 1/2 hours after the scheduled first pitch, conditions on the field constructed across the track and infield of the famous Speedway were rendered unplayable, and MLB had to put on the brakes. And so the game between the Braves and Reds resumed on Sunday and that led to appropriately enough a car zipping along from Georgia to Tennessee to get Braves pitcher Hursten Waldrip there on time. See both teams were able to add a 27th man for the resumption of the suspended game and Waldrip was summoned from Triple Awette to take them out. for Wall Drip, not to be confused with three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Daryl Wall trip, to get to the game on time meant being picked up by a car service at 5:00 a.m. for the roughly 5hour track. Get this, the race distance at Bristol Motor Speedway is typically 500 laps or about 266 mi. The distance from Gwynet County, Georgia to Bristol Motor Speedway is 262 miles. So, close enough. How can you not be romantic about baseball and car racing? Anyway, despite the short notice and lack of sleep, Walrip wound up giving the Braves five and two/3 effective innings in which he allowed just a run on three hits. Woke up, got a call from the AAA manager, uh, Kico Sher, and he said, “Hey, uh, you’re going to pitch in Bristol tomorrow. You’re going to get some calls with details. You know, good luck.” Everything since then just kind of been it’s been non-stop. So, it’s you didn’t really have time to sit here and think about how it all happened, but nonetheless, grateful for it. Happy to be here. Um, it’s just been a it’s been an unbelievable day. The rest was left to Eli White, the Braves outfielder, who was only in the lineup because of the injury suffered by Ronald Akuna Jr. last week. In the top of the second inning, White became the first MLB player ever to hit one past the warning track and the car track. Two-1 from Sudter to White. That ball’s hit hard. Deep to left field. And it is gone. Eli White with a three-run home run to put the Braves in front. There’s your car. That gave the Braves a three to one lead. And in the seventh, White took another lap around the bases. There’s another drive off of the bed of White and Eli White has hit his second home run of the Speedway Classic. That’s going to send a race car around the track. Eli White had four home runs all season. He comes here and hits two in one game. Thanks to White and Waldrip, the Braves cruise to victory lane with a 4-2 win in front of an announced crowd of 91,032 fans, the largest ever for an MLB game by car. I mean, by far. Pop quiz. Can you name the only MLB team with an all-time winning record against the New York Yankees? It’s not the rival Red Sox. It’s not the cross town Mets. It’s not the Astros team that’s been a thorn in the Yankee sides in some recent October. It’s not the Dodgers team that defeated them in the World Series last year. Nope, it’s the Marlins who are now 25 and 24 all time versus the Bronx Bombers, including of course their 2003 World Series triumph. This year’s Marlins are not likely to be World Series bound, but they have been quietly creeping their way up toward 500. And this weekend they got there in dramatic fashion against a Yankees team that is beginning to incite panic among the pinstripe faithful. On Friday, the Yankees unveiled their new look bullpen with trade acquisitions Jake Bird, David Bednar, and Camilo Dval. All pitching in a game in which the Yanks led 9 to4 at the seventh inning stretch. But the Fish fought back, scoring a total of nine runs off that trio in the late innings to come away with a thrilling 13 to12 win. On Saturday, former Yankees prospect and Jazz Chisum Jr. trade acquisition August Ramirez homered twice for the Marlins in a two to nothing victory. Finally, in Sunday’s series finale, it was All-Star Kyle Sters’s turn to shine. There’s a shot deep right field. Going back is Bellinger. He looks up and it is gone. Kyle Sters has done it again. This time a threerun shot off the lefty. The Marlins won again 7 to3 to complete their first ever sweep of the Yankees. And they did it in front of a weekend crowd of 101,545 fans, setting a new three-game attendance record for Loone Depot Park, which opened in 2012. Most importantly, the Marlins are now 500, becoming the first team since the 2014 Rays to rally from at least 16 games under 500 to the 500 mark within a season. The Yankees, meanwhile, have sunk to third place in the ALe East thanks to their surprising nemesis, the Feisty Fish. Coming up, Milwaukee, more like Milwaukey. That’s after the break. [Music] The Brewers already have the best record in baseball, and this weekend they had one of the best weekends in franchise history. It happened in DC where the Brew Crew unnerved the Nats with a hit parade. In a series sweep finished off with Sunday’s 14-3 victory, the Brewers cranked out 56 hits to set a club record for a three-game span. They outscored the Nats 38-4, including a sevenrun seventh on Sunday. Drilled into deep right field. Back goes Hassel turning, watching. He’s a spectator for the second home run of the day for Bryce Terang. Another Bryce bomb. It’s a sevenun seventh. The only bummer for the Brewers was that rookie phenom Jacob Mizarowski was unable to take his turn in the rotation Sunday due to a shin bruise suffered on a hardliner in his last outing. The Brewers placed the Miz on the IIL and hope to have him back when he’s eligible August 15th. Elsewhere in MLB on Sunday, in the third inning of the Mariners 5 to4 victory over the division rival Rangers, it was Julio going deep. Julio cracks this high the opposite way. It is back and it’s gone. Julio career home run number 100. That was the 100th homer of Julio Rodriguez’s career and his 20th of the year, making him the first player in MLB history to have 20 homers and 20 steals in each of his first four season. Seattle’s win pulled them within two and a half games of first place Houston, who fell six to one to the Red Sox despite Carlos Koreah hitting his first home run since Thursday’s surprise trade that reunited him with the Astros. The Red Sox swept the Stros to improve to a season best 11 games over 500 and pull within three games of the first place Blue Jays. Those Jays fell seven to four to the Royals who have now won four straight series and are back to 500. Another team making moves is the Padres’s who decided to keep Dylan CE at the trade deadline and were rewarded with five scoreless one-hit innings from CE in a 7-3 victory over the Cardinals. San Diego has now won seven of its last eight games overall. The Padres’s remained three games back of the Dodgers who took two of three over the weekend in Tampa while returning Blake Snell to their rotation. Christopher Sanchez delivered eight scoreless innings and newly acquired closer Yawan Duran closed the door in the Phillies two to nothing victory over the Tigers on Sunday Night Baseball to complete a series win in Philly. Finally, let’s get to Cork. In their 5 to3 loss to the Cubs on Sunday, the Orioles became the first team in history to start three Jacksons in their lineup. Jackson Holiday at second base, Jeremiah Jackson in right field, and Alex Jackson a catcher. And then in the first inning, the Cubs Ian Hap hit an RBI double to right. But when Carson Kelly tried to score on the play, here’s what happened. 1-1. That’s hit well out to deep right field, sailing over Jackson and and off the Ivy. Back into play with Suzuki coming down the line. Kelly’s going to strike from first base. They’ll throw to the plate and they got him. Score that relay. 942 or in this case Jackson to Jackson to Jackson. Head to MLB.com for the rest of the weekend’s news and scores. [Music] That’s all for the morning lineup today. Tune in to the MLB.tv free game of the day when the Orioles visit the Phillies at 6:45 p.m. Eastern time.
