MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks – Aug 4, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

about to get started here. And on the hill in this one, Ryan Nelson. Well, he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning, which is really good, especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two, three, maybe even four times in a start. So, just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is. We’ll see if it’s that way in this one. All right, ready to get underway and the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. Fast for a strike and we’re underway. First pitch 640. Next offering is down low. Boo Tatis is so athletic. He probably could have carved out a career in other sports if he wanted, but he grew up in a baseball family with baseball in his blood. Swing and a miss. There’s the change up. The next offering misses. The countdown two and two. And that’s downstairs and outside. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. fouled off again and it remains three and two. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one, that’s the one. When she elevates, guys aren’t touching it. swing and a miss struck him out. Well, that right there is just a pitcher’s pitch. Tailing away from the hitter, blowing away with some good action at the end. You know, even if he gets the bat to that ball, it’s probably just a weak ground ball to the opposite side. Tell you what, that’s a tremendous two- strike pitch. Luis Arise stands in inside. And that’s ball one. One out. Base is empty. And a swing and a line drive out of right field. Makes the grab for the second out. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup, this is a veteran le lineup right here. A lot of players with plenty of experience. Singy. Yeah, no doubt about that, Boo. These players have been around the game for a long time. And they may not have the flash that they once did, but they’ve got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations, be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent. And you always seem to see a team like this. They come to the ballpark. They know how to get down to business and they understand what the job is at hand. Manny Machado stands in here. Leaves that one off the inside. Out to short. Purdomo tosses across the first. Machado is out. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Padres’s go down quietly. And now Arizona gets its first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here with my pal Singi, today’s starting pitcher, you Darvish. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the RRA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that ERA will have dropped over time. Corbin Carroll leading things off and takes a strike. And that one’s a little bit low. One and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Swing and a broken bat roller towards third. Bare hand grab. Not in time. Great effort, but it’s an infield hit. Boom. He doesn’t care how he does it. He just wants to get on base and when he does that puts him in a position to do some damage, put some pressure on the defense as well. His wheels are truly a weapon out there. Catel Marte up to the plate. Darvis checks on the runner. Carol dives back in safely. And that one fouled off. Next offering upstairs. Good purpose pitch right there. Trying to tease him, get him to raise his sights, pop something up, and make it an easy out. Two balls, one straight. Nobody out. Runner at first. If you’re going to miss, you want to miss outside the zone. When you miss inside the zone, it’s trouble. That’s outside. And that’s ball three, Chris, with that distraction. and the speedy guy at first. He’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in and ball for two aboard. Well, we’ve seen this recipe cook up a big inning plenty of times. Two runners on, nobody out, and they’re the heart of their odor. It’s just a great opportunity to put up a crooked number. Now a chance for Parado Peromo. Swung on. Belted. Sheets. Sprinted towards the gap. Can’t reach this one. It gets down. One runs in. A second scores as well. It’s two nothing. Well, there you go with the RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring it back. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Au Suarez up to hit now. Outfield playing very deep, not wanting anything over their heads. Next pitch is outside. Two count to a guy with this much pop at the dish. You better expect him to be turning on something. It’s going to either get hit hard to the pull side or the fans better look out in the stands. That one misses. and now three and 0. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Three. Band at second. Foul ball there. kicks and fires on the ground and foul ball and a foul ball. He stays alive. Good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. And a swing and a miss. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strikeout. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Here’s Guriel. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Strike one. One ball. One strike. swing in a line drive. That’s a base hit out of the right center. Headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. Stepping in Adrien Del Castillo. First pitch misses. No strike. First inning going a bit long. 23 pitches to this point. Slides, but it gets by him. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Batting seven. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Tristan English. Swinging a foul out of play. Well, it might be a night game, but it’s pretty hot out there. And I don’t have to tell you, partner, you’re sweating pretty good over there. makes this long inning that he’s grinding through out there a little extra taxi. Two on, one out. Ground ball left side could be two out of work and that’s two. Three runs on four hits, no errors and one left on. Onto the second inning here in the desert. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the Padres’s nothing. back here in the desert and now it’s going to be Jackson Merill. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. We got to stay aggressive, keep attacking hitters, try to cruise through this ball game. And a big swing and a miss. Larry Bullard, our umpire behind the plate. Bullard’s got a pretty standard strike zone. Sometimes he’ll have you guessing a little bit, but overall well respected umpire in the league. And that just misses. Excellent arm action on that two strike change up. Just missed. Man, he wanted that call. Got him swinging for the strike out. Pulled the string of the change up. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. One ball, one strike. Bogarts, who wears that number two on his back for his idol, Derek Jeter. And a curve is down and in. swings through that one out in front that time. Left that change up. Got away with one there and he’ll take it, but doesn’t want to make that mistake again. Still two and two after the foul ball. Good zip on that fast ball at the bottom of the zone. If he’s there all day, it’s going to be a tough one for the hitters. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Off to a strong start, Singy as he’s punched out three of the first five he’s faced. Well, he’s definitely minimizing contact. He can get the swing and miss when he needs it, but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him, allowing some balls in play as well. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. And that’s outside. One and0. And the one swinging a foul straight back. Two out. Space is empty. He swings and fouls one off. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Two down. Nobody on goes down swinging for the strike out. And he strikes out the side here in the second. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. Bottom half of inning number two. Here’s the third base, Bla1 Alexander. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Fires over to first. One up, one down. Good armside run and sink on that pitch right there. Got inside on him and got him to bounce into that. Barrosa, Jorge Bar Roa digs in now. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. That one’s in there and it’s 0 and one. What about him playing another position on defense? One that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to. It’s in and out of his glove. Gets off a throw and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the Carol. So, back to the top of the Arizona lineup. This is Corbin Carroll. Reached on an infield single his first time. And that’s through their first strike. It’s 0 and one. The strong second inning is a confidence builder for him. A relief for his manager. Doesn’t have to get into that bullpen quite as early. The O2 fouled off and they’ll do it again. That misses. It’s a ball in two strikes. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect. Now that’s strike three and the third out. So we take a break and the Diamondbacks down in order, but they’re on top by a count of three to nothing. All set for the start of the inning. So digging in now for San Diego, Jose Glacius. Nelson back to work. Eglacius in his 11th season, 35 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Foul ball swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Just not able to catch up to that velocity. That one not close. Now two and two. Make it four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone. But that’s one of the hardest things that when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, the one that one fouled off down and in. Moved his feet. really good take, especially with two strikes. Another one. That’s five straight strikeouts. Well, right now he’s in cruise control, autopilot, just dominating these hitters. Doesn’t look like it’s a fun at bat. And all of a sudden, you become in awe of this guy on the mound. Somebody’s got to break this thing up. That’s five straight strikeouts. Got to put a ball in play. Martin Maldonado in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Strike two. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just going to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. Strike three. And now six strikeouts in a row. Three up, three down for San Diego. Still down three nothing. Back here at Chase Field, here’s Catel Marte singing. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Well, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. Right side hard hit in plenty of time to first. They get the out on Mart. Now batting shorts stop. Heraldo Peromo. Next the hit for Arizona. Heraldo Purdomo. One for one with a double and a run scored. First offering and it just misses. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s a ball and a strike. And that one sliced fouled. Darvish kicks, delivers swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher and there’s two down. Up next for the Diamondbacks designated hitter Auano Suarez. Two outs. Base is empty. Au Heno Suarez up to the plate now. His first at bat was a strikeout. There’s the strike swinging a miss at a slider. Oh, two. Foul ball. still 0 and2. Two outs. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. And that’s in the dirt. two. Next pitch is downstairs. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count. He’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. That one close. Rule the ball and it’s three and two. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. to third. Machado fires across the diamond and Arizona is set down one, two, three. Diamondbacks down quickly, but they lead it three nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Fernando Tatiz Jr. That one catches the zone. And that’s strike one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. and he’s down 02 as he swings through it quickly in an 02 count. You’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Tatis waits. Fast ball is outside. One ball, two strike. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there. Grabs it right up against the wall. For the Padres, first base. Here comes Luis Arise to the plate. If you’re looking for contact, this is your guy. Yeah. And if you’re looking for batting titles, he’s also your guy. Arise is the first player in MLB history to win three straight with three different teams. The Twins, Marlins, and the Padres’s in there at the knees. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit, spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. That misses the zone and the count is one and two. Straighten him up a little bit. One down. Base is empty and they’ll do it again. They say it went throw to first and it beats him for out number two. That’s a strikeout. Well, he’s been racking up the strikeouts and what’s so impressive, not walking anyone. And I mean, this guy’s just going right after hitters, filling up the strike zone. And it looks like hitters, they’re trying to think with him, but they just are a pitch behind. Dominating stuff out there on the mound. Oh, and one check swing called strike. No ball. Got him. Larry Fuller brings him up. Nothing doing there for the Friars. They trail it here. 3 nothing. And we’re back. Ready to go. Bottom four. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. Lordis Guriel Jr. Guriel gets a piece. You know, these Dbacks doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. And in foul ground, he pulls it down. One out. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. And now the catcher comes up to him. Adrien Del Castillo, one for one with a single so far. And that’s in there for strike one. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. That one back up the middle and it gets through and they have their first hit since the first inning. Now up next for Arizona, Tristan English 0 for one so far. And that drops in for a strike. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darvish. He has more than a 100red wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo by former teammate. And that’s outside. And now it’s even one and one. runner on the goal. Swing and a miss. Throw and they got him. Gosh, that’s just a terrible jump right there off first base. It really cost him and it wasn’t even a great throw, but it still allowed him to slap the tag on him just in time. Boogie looked like it was you running or something. When you get off the blocks that poorly, you got to be willing to shut it down and get back to first. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Two down to swings through it and that’s a strike out. Nothing doing for Arizona, but they lead it three nothing. Back here in the desert. New inning getting started. Stepping in for San Diego. Jackson Merrill. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. You know, these Padres’s just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. We’re in the back half of the game and they’re still searching for a base runner. He’s been great out there on the mound, no doubt, but it’s also been a disappointing performance at the plate to this point. swing and a line drive ripped out into left center field. That’ll touch down for a hit. Safe at second with a leadoff double all over that one right there. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts right through there for a strike. And as we get deeper, it’s not going to get any easier. These at bats are going to feel more and more desperate with every out the rest of the way. Merryill at second with nobody out. Swinging a foul straight back. A change up missing and it’s one and two. Just misses the mark outside the zone. spoils that one and it remains two and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Up the middle. Oh, great stop from his knees. The throw on the money. Nice play. Look at the commitment to make the play down on the ground from the knees. That’s not just arm strength, guys. That’s core strength as well. Look at that rocket across the diamond. Outstanding job. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Struck out swinging his first time. And that one lifted in the air center field. Barrosa snags it. Runner tagging from third. He’s in on the sacrifice fly. And now just a two-run deficit. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. Went down on strikes his first time through and misses inside. Two down, base is empty, but one run across and we’re in the top of the fifth. And that is out of play. The shorts stop takes a ball. Fouls one off. Two and two. Two outs. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. that one way inside. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. and he walked him. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul. had a curve drops in for a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. One and two to count. had a good eye there. Sometimes you got to fight to get back into an at bat. Take some tough pitches. Even out the count. Popped up. English. And that is that. A run, a hit, and a man left. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks three, and the Padres’s won. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Now the third base, Blae Alexander. Blaze Alexander. That pitch gets the inside corner. Strike one. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Gets a piece and stays alive. That’s way outside and the count one and two and downstairs. way inside. Three ball strike. Darbish delivers. And that one ripped to left. Makes the catch. One down. Up next for the Diamondbacks, center fielder. Jorge Barrosa stands in now for the Diamondbacks. First time up, he grounded to third. Check swing called strike. That’s off the mark. Now one and two. One ball, two straight. That one almost got him. One down, base is empty. Line drive and that’s just foul. Just misses with that one. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. And that’s ruled the swing. It’s a strike out. So the batting order turns over. Corbin Carroll the next to hit. One for two. Corbin Carroll. Check swing went around. That’s strike one. strike. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. And ball one. So a foul ball makes it one and two. And that skips in the dirt and the sweeper is off the plate. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline. Breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job. Draws the walk there. You can stomach a two out walk to certain players, but with his speed, this guy out there on the base pass, it could turn into two or three bases. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. He’s 0 for one. and first offering is fouled off. Now, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Over to first and he’s safe. Now one and one movement in the bullpen. Nick Pavetta up and loosening in the pen. Marinacio also throwing. Carol off of first with two away and a foul ball. The one two swings through that and it’s a strike out now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. No runs, no base hits, no errors and a runner left. We’re through five. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the Padres’s won. Back here at Chase Field. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Martine Maldonado up to hit. Nelson back to work in there at the knees for a strike. Maldonado in his 13th season, 38 years old and he was born in Puerto Rico. next offering in there for a strike and it’s nothing and two quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Fights that one away. Still one and two. swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes. So cracks double digits with his 10 strike out. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. for two in this one. Late swing fouled off. swing and a miss. There’s that change up. It really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. Next offering way off the plate. Base is empty, one away, and we’re the top half of the sixth. swing and a miss. Came out with his 11 strike out in this one. Really racking up the whips. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes, slider down and away from the same side thrower as the hitter. That’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. Luis Az. The next up for the Padres’s that clips a corner. Two down. Do on swag and a popup. Foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Lie drive. And that’ll do it. Nothing across here this half. Hard of the order 345 coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the Padres’s one. Now pitching pitching change here. Nick Pa left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So this seems like a calculated move. 345 do up for the home team. Heraldo Peromo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Tap foul at the plate. Well, these Diamondbacks really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. ran his pitch count off and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground ball. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. They had it first. And next is the Diamondbacks DH AU Suarez. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. And that one fouled off. Rudder at first with no outs here. And the one two misses to even the count. Got him looking for the strike out. That was pretty nasty. You think he caught him off guard with a fast ball right there, Chris? He didn’t look ready for it. Yeah, no doubt. I think that’s exactly what happened. You look at the sequence of pitches. He didn’t see anything firm until that last fast ball. So, you got to think he was still sitting off speed and just couldn’t react quick enough to even get a swing off. That’s good pitching right there. And it’s Lordis Goreiel Jr. that catches the corner. Let’s go back. Not close with that one. Ball one. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. And that’s in the dirt. Well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself into scoring position. Now, batting two on, one out. And here’s the catcher, Adrien Del Castillo. He’s two for two. left field way back there. That’s back. Makes the grab. Runner tags at second and he moves up a base. So, two away with runners at the corners. And now the first base, Tristan English. First baseman, Tristan English. outside. One ball. Go straight. Next offering in there for a strike and a count one and one. There’s a swinging a miss. Ruers on first and third. Two away here in the bottom of the sixth. That one way outside the count now even up. And that’s downed away. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Bla1 Alexander on deck for Arizona. Struck him out looking. No runs, a hit. Two left. We’re through six full. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the Padres’s one. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Number 43. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Here’s Manny Machado now. Three pitch strike out last time. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Just off the inside edge. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. Swing and a miss. That missed by a lot. Two and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. That misses the zone. Three balls, two strikes. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. And they don’t get an out on the play. Up next for the Padres’s. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s. Jackson Merrill and that misses ball one. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. And there’s one down. Man, he just couldn’t lay off right there. Those high fast balls, they just look really good because they’re eye level, but they’re just about impossible to get the barrel to. And here comes Sander Bogarts. And that is in for a strike. Going one. The tying run at the plate. And now one and two. headed towards the corner. Guriel handles the chance. Now it’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. Picked up an RBI in his last at bat. Still their only run of the game so far. Not even close there. One and0. tying run at the plate. Had a breaking ball misses outside and a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Well, this looks like it’s going to be a wasted opportunity. It’s frustrating when you get the leadoff man on, but you can’t get him into scoring position. They’re going to need a big knock. Try to put something up on the board with the tying run at the plate here in the top half of inning number seven. Next offering is downstairs. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field. Barrosa going back on this one. Just missed getting out of here and tying this game. One left for San Diego. Score holds. It’s 3-1. Set for the last half of the seventh. And here is Bla1 Alexander. Blaze Alexander and a foul ball. Next offering is fouled back. swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt. Maldonado to first in time to get him one away in the strike out. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast and then bury that ball down low to get him swinging now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days. That’s a devastating combination. So digging in, Jorge Barrosa. And that’s in for a strike. One one strike. Oh, one and one popped up. Sheets coming on, hauls it in for the out and there’s two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Swing and a highf fly ball. Well struck left field way back there. That’s not coming back. A laser to left. It’s 4-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. That’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched. taking that outside fast ball and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark. You want to bottle that type of approach. Marte in the box now. No balls in a strike. and that one cutting but missing down low. Fouls it back with two strikes. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here. The bottom of the seventh. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Bounce to the right side. Croninworth tosses to first. They get the out on Marte. That’s out number three. Another run for Arizona with this bomb. It’s now 4-1. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Now pitching. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Number 27 power slider guy. Boo. He throws it hard and gets a lot of late movement so it’s tough to pick up. Jose Glacius now at the plate. He is struck out and he is walked on the ground to first English and he takes it himself for the out. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw, here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. This one high in the air to left center. Guriel trying to get there. Two away. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Next for the Padres’s, Martine Maldonado, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Blind into right. runner at first with two away. Next to hit, Fernando Tatiz Jr. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. That breaking ball drops in for a strike. Here’s a runcoring opportunity. You definitely got to push something across because it’s not going to get any easier. You get to the ninth, you got a lock down closer ready to come in. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. Next offering is down low. One ball, one strike. This one in the dirt. And El Nino is stifled for the K. So one hit is all they get. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. It’s the Diamondbacks four and the Padres’s one. Now pitching for now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Ron Marinacio just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. 345 do up for the home team. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. That one outside and that’s ball one. right through there for a strike. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. And now two balls in a strike. Next offering is fouled back. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Three and two. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. stays alive. Fights it off. You’ll see another. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall. Suarez. Man at first, nobody out. Next is the designated hitter. Auo Suarez 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Yuki Matsui, the young lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. getting loose as well. the one and another ball. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. That one fouled off. Two and two. Perdomo gets his lead at first with nobody out. And that’s a strikeout looking. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance. You want a flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. And the batter now, Lordis Guriel Jr. check swing and he went and that is strike one. Guriel gets a piece. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. Next offering way upstairs. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. A swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s the catcher, Adrien Del Castillo. And there’s the strike. That’s a strike. Oh, two. That one down the line and it goes just foul. Two on, one out and one and two straight. Breaking ball misses down and away. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. I think he might have gotten away with one right there. That was a very hitable pitch right over the heart of the plate. And I know that batter is kicking himself right now. Would like to get that pitch again. Just pulled the string on it and the deception gets him the K. Swanging a ground ball, the flip, and that’s a nice play to end the inning. So they strand a pair. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks four and the Padres’s one. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Kevin Ginkle. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with free passes this year. So digging in now for San Diego, Luis 0 for three in this one. First pitch misses. GKO measures 6′ 4 in. He features a four seam fast, a slider, and he works in a sinker inside corner. That’s a strike. And it’s one and one. Pick and bat right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. This one smoked could be trouble. Makes the turn and heads for second. and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. With that fast ball, even though it’s high velocity, you’ve got to live on the outer edges. It’s right on a tea right down the middle. Professional hitters are not going to have a problem turning it around. Now, Machado up here, one for three, and Manny gets a piece. The one way out front for strike two. He’s clearly out there throwing pitchers pitches in this situation. First base is open. He walks in. No big deal. Andy one and two. two in the dirt. Blocked. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top of the ninth. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Brown’s third headed for the plate. The throw in. It’s offline. The run comes in. is 42. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merrill. First pitch and he just misses. This is the guy they turn to to get the most important outs of the ball game, but they’re going to make him work to get this save. Tying run at the plate and there’s a strike. One ball, one strike in the air. left field down the line. Guriel handles the chance and there’s one down. Now batting the designated hitter, Xander Bogart. He’s two outs away. And now the DH Xander Bogarts 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. in for a strike. Good slider. Right through there for a strike. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. Never had a chance. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Man, he’d like to have that pitch back. Machado over at first with one away. Foul ball still 0 and two. And that one upstairs. Pitch misses there. And now two balls and two strikes in there. Looking for the K and they’re down to their last out. frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the bullpen. Kevin Ginkle out of the game. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching. So out of the pack for the Diamondbacks, Anthony Dani, he’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season, so this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Last chance for the Padres’s stepping in for San Diego, Jake Croninworth. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. There’s a strike. That one drilled left field. That’s the ball game. I’d say you’re lying if you say you don’t feel a fivegame losing streak. This W definitely helps them relax a little bit and take some of the pressure off from it going to a six, seven, or even an eightgame losing streak. And your final 42 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
