Minnesota Vikings Training Camp Notes: Practice #10 – Fighter of The Night Practice
[Music] What’s going on, Jeromes? A beautiful Monday night. Vikings play Monday night football in like five weeks. Wait, one, two, three, four. Yeah, five weeks. Close enough. Uh, but of course, Monday, August 4th, the famous night practice for Minnesota Fight Vikings training camp. Everyone’s looking good. And also this was on the television where uh scientists have been researching for years the the level that we are back. They haven’t found it yet. Yeah. But PA looking full-on silver fox Pete Bersich my neighbor as well as Ben Leieber. It’s looking good. It’s looking good. Just can we have these three do all Vikings games and the Super Bowl as well because the Vikings will be there. It’ll be good. It’ll be good. But of course, uh, the man of the hour was Jay McCarthy, Jonathan James McCarthy, and then also Brett Ripen and Sam slinging Sam Howell in the background. But everyone’s excited to see what number nine could do. And of course, the the full connection between Kevin Oonnell and JJ McCarthy was on display as well. Plus, remember this is JJ McCarthy’s first night practice because last year they delayed practice from the 5th to the 12th because weather or something like that. And then the inter in the intervening time we had the first preseason game against the Raiders and then McCarthy missed the night practice because uh Kevin McConn said ah routine soreness and then we find out it’s the minis sky. Yeah. But, you know, first time under the lights at TCO Stadium in front of the fans and it was beautiful. Like there there was some highs, there was some lows that there was well, mostly highs, some good times. But also, we said this before, McCarthy doesn’t have Jefferson. He Hawinson is going to be up on blocks for a little while. Darasaw is kind of there, but not on like like a full-time basis. Like he’s in the background just standing 71 uh there. So he’s back for some 11-11s, but not not not the full freight. Also, Ryan Kelly was missing this practice and still and still MacArthur persisted. So the fact that cuz the defense is pretty much good to go right on any given day. And the fact that he’s doing that without Darasaw full time, without Jefferson, without Hawinson now, it’s pretty damn impressive. It’s good times. So a couple takeaways from the night practice. A lot of veterans had nights off. Ryan Kelly with the elbow. Hawinson with the hip, leg, back, groin. Don’t know. Harrison Smith had the night off. Jo Josh Matelis as well. Maybe he actually did have something with the ankle as opposed to contract itis. We’ve seen that it worked out, right? You know, Jefferson obviously out as well as um you Hawinson like we mentioned. Uh McCarthy. So, the arm strength is legit. And we’ve talked about before like arm strength is more than just you, you know, Joe Joe Milton the third 97,000 yards, Jeff George back in the day or you know Anthony Richards like people still talk about that 65 yard bomb Anthony Richardson had as a rookie. Doesn’t matter. It’s more than throwing a football over the mountains. Like arm strength to me is more important. Can you fit the ball in a tight window where only the receiver can get it before the safety and the corner close on it on third and nine right at the sticks? Like do you have the tangy zip America whipped to be able to do that? that that’s what’s more important way more important about arm strength that McCarthy certainly has that plus the the the JJ McCarthy to Jordan Addison connection chemistry like beyond nudity it might be the story of camp because Addison obviously facing the suspension but quickly building up that that chemistry and anticipation is good plus you know McCarthy anticip anticipation throws are legit throwing guys open and plus having the confidence to spin it like that because you you don’t necessarily see that with a lot of young quarterbacks coming in, right? And also, you know, McCarthy has a benefit for coming from a pro style system, but a lot of quarterbacks coming from spread or, you know, sort of gimmicky, you know, Tennessee, Oregon offenses, uh, that you you see it in your throat. See it in your throat. seeing you throw where McCarthy’s letting go in darts that are just throwing the guy open like you’re throwing it before the receivers’s even into his breaks, let alone out of it, right? So, it it does stand out. Plus, he did get loose in a couple in red zone drills with his legs, which is going to be kind of important. I I honestly feel like McCarthy is going to be valuable as a fantasy quarterback. I think he’ll end up in the top 10 just because uh I think he’ll have a decent floor with rushing yardage as well as some red zone touchdowns as well. Uh, plus, I mean, we’ve talked about this. Uh, a quarterback who can run, like an actual mobile quarterback, like puts a lot of stress on defense, man. And also, you get a lot more man looks underneath because it’s tough to turn your back on a mobile quarterback. Plus, there there’s nothing more just disheartening. Like third and 12 deep in in the other team’s ter own territory. And you got everything covered up, everything’s good to go. We get pressure and then the quarterback just scrambles for 14 yards like aya. Uh speaking of defense, Javon Harrave. So I mean Hargrave would be eligible for the Earl of Vegan Mr. Mano if he was a little bit younger, right? But uh Javon Hargrave 32 just destroying fools. Like 11 on 11’s looking good uh in one-on- ones. He and Diamond Jackson had some good reps. Jackson’s going to learn, right? Now people have been caring that a little bit too far. be like, “Oh, I mean, look what Hargrave did to him.” But it’s a one-on-one drill where, you know, the other lineman just sort of stand there. I mean, he would have had help. CJ Ham would have been there as well or the running back in pass pro. So, not all is lost, right? Also, uh, Michael Jurgens started center in place of Ryan Kelly. Now, Jurgens had turfed the ball a couple times uh dur during practice last week, but I’m still bullish on Michael Jurgens. I I feel like uh it puts the lotion on it skin or else it gets the hose again. Has a chance to be the center of the future. I really do. In a couple of years, uh AVG would had a safety when they’re working on backed up in your own end zone type drills. Dan Olowski would be proud. Uh Lucky Jackson getting some first team reps. So your top three receivers uh with the first team offense were Addison, Naylor, and Lucky Jackson. Now I I know people are complaining, well, what about Ty Felton? What about him? Knew it was going to take some time. It’s fine. Um, Rond Del Moore, you not getting those reps that something to raise an eyebrow, but I feel like Jackson, uh, Deshawn Jones and the Thomas have had a really nice camp so far. Plus, you know, Balden Fleming in there. So, the cupboard certainly is not bare at receiver without Justin Jefferson at this moment in time. Uh, also defense was just dominant all the way around. like first through third units. I mean, they were bringing heat. They’re getting pressure, moving the quarterbacks off the spot, and I feel like they’re it’s going to be such a fun defense to watch, man. And just so creative. Like every single week, someone else uh is going to be the hero. Someone else is going to step up. And I feel like this is just going to be such a fun defense, man. It’s gonna be really good. Also, um like I said, quarterbacks move out the spot. Sam How was not good again. I mean, there’s really no other way to slice it. There was there was one rep where he had Deshawn Jones on a go route, massively underthrew it, and Zamaya Vaughn had good coverage, but he probably would have been called for DPI because it was so horribly underthrown. It’s just it just it’s just not clicking right. Uh Ripen primarily worked with the threes again. Brazmer. I mean, I would actually give Brazmer a chance, man. I’m I know preseason and joint practice will go a long ways to stratifying things like who who rises, who doesn’t, but how I’m really disappointed in how but there’s still time. So, we’ll see. Also, Kama Judson was with the first team defense as Matelis got a rest day. And I mean honestly like a lot of defenders have had themselves great camps whether it’s uh obviously Nudy Theo Jackson uh Kiana Jayward Sun Zamaya Vaughn the UDFA from Utah. I mean a lot of DBs had some nice Khif Hassie as well. Uh a lot of DBs have had a really nice camp so far. Oh obviously the rise of Jeff Akuda as well. That that that one’s a given. And then also Idios Mio will record 646. Uh Will Rags point out that’s the first time he’s been he’s been uh perfect in a practice which is good. Uh hit from 33 40 45 46 49 51 bingo or something like that. So uh he’s back. That’s all. Uh anyways that’s it. That’s it. Uh thoughts from Vikings first night practice. Well only night practice. You know what I mean? You guys are the best. You know what to do. Skull production value. Hey, hey, hey.

I was at night practice last year, I remember finding out on Twitter less than an hour before that JJ wasn’t playing. I remember the whole crowd went quiet for a bit as the news broke.
Watching from behind enemy lines 🤫 😎😎 🍻🤙🏼🖖🏼
Bear hunt coming soon
It’s going to BLOW your minds Vikes fans when he “throws” against defenders that aren’t his own teams defense and mastermind DC Flores during his 1st preseason game… #Skol
Is Pete really your neighbor?
I had fun listening to Paul Allen. What an announcer
Teddy bridgewater or Heineke please
Happy About Big Leg Will getting groove back with his kicking
Paul Allen is awesome. He actually calls the game and manages to be entertaining in the gaps while setting up his co-hosts and interviewees with questions and banter. Not many real sports announcers like that left.
I heard teddy is returning to the NFL and we could use a back up
I can't wait to play the Bears. Caleb Williams is going to struggle.
Haven’t made it to a night practice since the Vikings were down in Mankato featuring a rookie quarterback named Dante Culpepper 9:35
Jeff George had a bullet for a pass!
Also heard again, and again that the Vikings swap Howell for……….. Guess who? Cousins. I almost peed down my leg laughing. They need to stop that BS!
Is this an always sunny reference?
It touch and accuracy, not just strength. McCarthy seems to have so much going for him. Plus all those weapons on offense, and a soul crushing defense.
I agree on the arm strength! Plus like you said JJ wasn't there! Addison wasn't there Darrisaw, etc. When he has those guys at his disposal he's gonna be dropping dimes and get full on protection!. Happy so see Reichard can still kick the ball straight.! Lol.. Brosmer could be that QB working up the ranks to the number 2 spot?.. Will see. Tensions are always high coming into this thing. Can't wait for saturday! Let's go!! SKOL!!!!
McCarthy sucked tonight. Pure homerism.
Aloha Andy. This 2025 season is gonna be a special year for the Purple Gang. It's time for the Purple People 💜 Eaters to resurrect the Rain of Terror like the 1970s. ❤🎉😮😊
Please showcase the PIXAR movie featuring Harrison Smith and Allen Page, apparently it drops next summer.
