“Rough Day” For Justin Fields | New York Jets Training Camp Practice RECAP! (8/5)
All right, guys. What’s going on? Welcome in. So, another training camp practice officially wrapped up here for the Jets. Tuesday, August 5th. Obviously, we have the first preseason game on Saturday against the Packers. That’s going to be crazy. I think it’s Jets at Packers. NFL Network 8:00. Uh, man, I cannot wait. Cannot freaking wait. But of course, we have this week full of practices and supposedly, right, according to reporters, the offense uh really the passing attack struggled today, multiple incompletions, multiple sacks, multiple turnovers. And it really feels like the notion from these reporters is that Justin Fields is struggling massively um you know, to complete passes and and and whatnot. But I I’ll say this on one hand, is it concerning? You know, you never want to see your quarterback throwing picks and getting sacked and this and that in training camp, right? You just kind of as a fan, especially a fan of the Jets, a team that for whatever reason just continues to struggle on the offensive side of the football year after year, it’s just like, okay, you want the to see the the positive quarterback stats. You know, I guarantee you if we saw a Connor Hughes tweet, Justin Fields is going uh, you know, 14 of 18 today with a couple of touchdown passes with no picks, the mood would be a lot better. Um, but because of these negative stats, it ju, you know, purely just looking at numbers here, it just kind of puts a damper on it. And so, as a Jet fan, you just want your quarterback to be performing better. You you just want to see more successful numbers. But then, on the other hand, I I think there needs to be some context, right? It’s August 5th. We were talking about this in the last video. The expectation for Justin Fields should not be the same as Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, all these different guys. Like, I mean, if you want to talk about being put in a situation where there is a steep learning curve, where it’s a brand new team with brand new teammates, a brand new coaching staff who’s trying to learn and do it for the first time on the fly, as well as a new scheme. It’s not like Justin Field is running the Arthur Smith scheme from last year. It’s not like Luke Gets is the quarterback coach and there’s some familiarity there. There’s some, you know, crossover. No, this is all brand new for Justin Fields. Outside of Josh Meyers, Jeremy Rucker, and Garrett Wilson, this whole thing is brand new. It It’s completely fresh here. So, obviously, there’s going to be a learning curve. Uh the Jets actually released a video uh kind of hyping up the defense where Sauce Garner made a play on the football. Michael Carter play made a play on the football. And you know, like you’re looking at these plays, it’s like the ball is exactly where it needs to be, but S Gardner, the highest paid corner football, is getting his hand in there for a pass deflection. Ball pops up and it lands in the hand of Brandon Stevens. What is that on paper? It’s a pick. But if you like when you look at the that’s why I’m always talking about eye tests, right? Like the eye test, it trumps stats. The eye test for me stands above all, right? And it’s not to say that the other things aren’t important, but I just, you know, I I like to see these guys actually play on the field. Um, and then I’ll have a more clear picture on what exactly is happening. Uh, and the whole reason why I bring it up is because, yeah, on a tweet, on paper, this goes down as an incompletion. This goes down as another incompleted pass. This goes down as another pick. But then if you actually watch the play, it’s just like like these are incredible, incredible plays that are being made by two great defenders here in Sasker and Michael Carter on the other one. Um, so we have that whole aspect of it. And then we actually heard Aaron Glenn afterwards in the press conference uh talk about the wide receiver position. And look, I don’t want to, you know, over dramatize it, you know, make it a big deal. Oh my gosh, you know, create drama out of nothing. But this is the second or third time where Glenn has talked about the wide receivers need to catch the football. Like it takes two to tango. The other wide receivers have to do their part. Um and he also made a really really interesting comment as well, which is Jeremy Rucker and Garrett Wilson are on the same page with Justin, but everyone else kind of needs to catch up. And then of course you you’re looking at the depth chart and it’s a lot of guys on one-year deals. That’s a lot of unproven uh question marks. And then you’re looking at the date, right? August 5th. So, you know, again, it’s not super surprising that this Jets team is struggling to pass the ball to have like this super efficient passing attack. I’ll literally, you know, like I think if we go, and I said this in yesterday’s video, too. I think if we take a look at all 32 teams in football, the offense is behind compared to the defense, especially when pads come on. I understand that not every single day is contact, but you know, the offense is trying to work through things and the Jets are learning a new system with a new coaching staff with the new quarterback. So, you know, of course, it’s going to be a little behind. Is Fields going to be late? Is Fields going to throw a pick? Is Fields, you know, going to have a a headscratcher from time to time? Yeah, of course he’s not a top five quarterback in football. And again, you want your quarterback out there producing, right? Lighting up practice, looking like a welloiled machine, spraying the football around, being super efficient. Uh I’m in that same boat, right? Um, but at the end of the day, the sky is not falling. It’s August 5th. We’re days before the first preseason game. And I’ll say this too about Justin, right? Kind of thinking about it now. Um, what a cool opportunity because it kind of feel not internally speaking, right? Not Ingrand, not Glenn, not the Jets, but it feels like the media side of it is kind of like, okay, what’s going on here? The offense or the passing attack isn’t all that good. He needs to pick it up. things are starting to, you know, it’s starting to get a little a, you know, a little highrung. But if you’re Justin, like you’re looking at a calendar. Hey man, it’s August 5th. I have over a month to get to where I need to be. Over a month. Like it’s it’s cool having that deadline. It’s cool having this much time, but because look, let’s be honest, there’s going to be so today was a longer practice. There’s going to be so many reps, so many team drills. I mean, joint practice sessions, pre-season reps, like there’s a lot of time left before the start of the regular season. Aaron Glenn talking about the team kind of focusing in on week one of the regular season, looking at everything through like a wide lens, which I really like. Uh, because it seems like there’s a a clear and detailed plan for how they want to approach the off seasonason. They’re not just kind of taking it day by day and just kind of seeing what happens. So yeah, a tough day through the air for Justin Fields and this Jets offense. Here is I would say some bad news, right? Lots of injuries sustained today. Brian Cohort, someone who’s supposedly having a pretty good camp. He’s dealing with an ankle injury. Aari Thomas hurt his shoulder. Breeze Hall left the field and then came back in. So luckily that doesn’t seem like it’s anything, you know, big. Will McDonald’s dealing with back spasms. Mason Taylor’s dealing with an ankle. Tyron Taylor dealing with the knee. According to Aaron Glenn, that’s kind of like a wear and tear uh thing. And it’s just going to be something that they’re going to be managing uh over these next, you know, days and weeks here. Germaine Johnson obviously continuing to not practice. So, the injuries are starting to pile up. I I think if we had a week before the regular season, I would be panicking, but because we have over a month, I think we’ll be okay. Um, but all you know, just throwing this out there, would it really hurt to bring in another wide receiver? I get that Josh Reynolds is having a good camp and stuff, but it just really feel I mean, it just, God forbid, Garrett Wilson gets hurt tomorrow. I mean, what the hell are we going to do at wide receiver then? Of course, it has to be a two-way street, but Keenan Allen’s out there, Gabe Davis is out there, Amari Cooper’s out there. Are these guys t, you know, top elite end type of wide receivers? No. But do they provide something that the Jets currently don’t have? I think you can make the argument for all three of those guys. Um I I think a veteran wide receiver who could get open by himself, who doesn’t necessarily need to be schemed open would be a smart play. You know, if we’re waking up tomorrow morning uh to the news, hey, the New York Jets are bringing in Gabe Davis on a one-year incentive based deal. Personally, I I you know, I’m not someone who’s like the biggest Gabe Davis fan, but are we a better football team? Yes, we are. Um, supposedly Alen Lazard continues to struggle. Aren Smith, I I just think that ask of a coaching staff is tough. Like, hey, you know, you’re a fourth round pick. We’re going to need you to, you know, we’re we’re relying on you to get 70 catches this season. Like, that to me is just unrealistic. Malachi Corley just up and down, but mostly down. Um, you know, Josh Reynolds, Tyler Johnson haven’t really heard much. It does seem like him and Fields are starting to build somewhat of a connection, but you know, I think Amari Cooper would come in immediately and be wide receiver too. No questions. And then, of course, we could take a look at potential traits. A lot of Jets fans have been talking about Terry McLuren. Obviously, paying someone a big deal, like you have to factor that in. Also, the compensation that you’re going to have to give up. One guy who I feel like he just makes a lot of sense for this Jets team. I also think it’s realistic. We talked about him, I mean, weeks ago when the news officially broke. Jawan Jennings. Jawan Jennings from the 49ers. I mean, talk about someone who would come in immediately and be the go-to wide receiver, too, right off the bat. Someone who is I I would feel be a pretty good counterpart to Garrett Wilson given his size, given his skill set, someone who’s played as wide receiver one when Brandon Iuk went down, someone who’s performed well in the slot, someone who’s performed well as the Z receiver as well. you don’t really feel like he’s going to come in and be like this diva mentality. I need the football. I need the football. He’s going to want a new deal, which I think is totally fair for what Jawan Jennings uh has done. I mean, he’s in the prime of his career. He’s coming off the best season of his career with also the most responsibilities on his plate. He also has experience working with Steve Wils. To me, Jawan Jennings just makes so much damn sense. You don’t have to give up as much as, you know, you would for, you know, one of these bigger name wide receivers. Of course, there is a a difference with the skill gap, but I mean, say you sign Jennings 14 mil a season. Um, yeah, it’s a lot of money, but it’s just kind of the going rate for wide receivers. Two-year deal, three-year deal. Probably a three-year extension would would would, you know, push it over the uh the finish line, three years, 42 mil. I mean, for context, Cory Davis signed three years 45 years ago. So, you know, I I think it’s just something to look into. you know, whether it’s a veteran free agent, whether it’s Jawan Jennings, whether the Jets want to go down the kind of home run swing route with Terry McLuren, I especially with Mason Taylor missing some reps here. Of course, you’re hoping that Jeremy Rucker or Stone Smark can maybe turn some heads uh until Mason’s back, but you know, I really don’t think it would hurt to get another pass catcher in the building. Again, I know we want to run the ball. I I understand run centric, run first, run heavy team, but but I just feel like if we added one more guy, it would open up the passing game. It would kind of lessen the tunnel vision from defensive coordinators on trying to stop the run for the Jets and just solely keying in on Garrett and then, god forbid, Garrett has an injury. So you you’re kind of just you’re covering all the bases. You’re not really leaving a stone unturned. And um I don’t know, just my suggestion. I I know a lot of Jets fans have been clamoring for another wide receiver as well. Um, so I I really don’t think it could hurt. Look, if the Jets have $3 million in cap space and we had to cut someone else to make it happen, okay, you know, fine. Uh, I understand it, but because we have so much, you know, kind of the same situation with Nick Folk, right? The kickers aren’t really getting it done. Let’s just bring in a solid veteran who can handle his business and just pay him what it what he deserves and what the going rate is. Now, with wide receiver, it’s a lot more money. I get it completely, but the point is the Jets have the space to do it. Uh a couple standouts from today’s practice. I understand that the vibe from the reporters was very negative from the day, but uh S Gardner continues to look absolutely dominant this camp. Brandon Stevens continuing to turn heads and make plays. And also Andre Cisco had another interception. Andre Cisco has been all over the place. My favorite free agent acquisition. I I really think he’s in store for a big year. Um I know I I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I feel like he could definitely take a huge huge step and have the best season of his career. I I don’t think that’s a stretch to say given the environment that Cisco is currently in. Steve Wilks, the development where he is age-wise, right? Uh athletic ability in this style of defense, great system fit as this rangy center fielder as well. So, uh yeah. Anyway, let me know your thoughts down below in the comments section. Thanks so much for watching and as always, go Jets.
Supposedly, Justin Fields and the New York Jets passing game struggled again in today’s training camp practice. Of course, it’s not what you want to hear but we have to look at it with context! As always..Go Jets!

Good analysis
Where did the media geniuses coach or play and excel. There jobs depend on drama. Need a WR2. Get Keenan and problem solved
Man I really hate when the reporters tweet stats with 0 context. I know they need to get engagement, and I also know that Fields needs to be better. But my god they do absolutely everything they can to stir up controversy. It almost seems to me like the Jets beat wants them to fail
Exactly… so tired of hearing about practice stats man…. It’s f*cking practice for the love of God
We all need to get ready for another ugly season. Justin Fields isn’t good, we only have one good WR, and our only (possibly) good TE is a rookie. Our interior DL is weak, and we only have one healthy, good edge rusher.
I get the sense that the Jets aren’t even trying to win this year. Not with this roster. If they were trying to win, they’d make some moves.
I swear every year we go thru this….Aaron Rodgers had good training camps…team and offense was no bueno. It's not good but it's not bad. It is literally practice. If Justin Fields was lighting it up against our defense, I would be more concerned about the team overall. Football is a complimentary sport, team sport.
It's amazing. Another great Jet practice!
Shouldn’t we be looking at Engstrand more than Fields here? What looks is he drawing up for Fields to go 16/43 when he can’t even be hit?
Idk how you guys in the comments do it man. Pretending this passing offense wont be bottom 5 is insane
As i mentioned on X, this is perfect for fields. AG said "we're going to iron out every wrinkle". Fields has a lot of wrinkles in his passing game. He also never had a coach work on things he isnt good at. They are working day and night to get that passing game better. I expect fields to struggle until it clicks. I hope they continue to make it hard for him so he can figure it out. Im excited, this is what I expected. Iron sharpens iron
So if he doesn't hit every pass , does everything right we get the 'rough day take' every day this is the very reason I don't pay much attention to some of the reporters overreactions after a week of this it gets kinda tired.
And besides, this is WHY you practice.
Like the new opening graphics!! 😀 Fields is going to struggle. He's not a good QB. That's why he's here. Last chance saloon. If/when he fails here, he'll never get another starting QB role. He'll be a back up. That will be his future in the NFL. I hope he succeeds. I'm a Jets fan.
Lazard stinks! That’s the only recap you need to hear. I don’t think fulltime superglue can help this guy catch a ball.
Got my hoodie yesterday! I love it homie
Merch man I’m still waiting
Please play these guys in preseason
We’ll see what happens!!!
Fields is on year 5. He still holds on to the ball way too long. He still struggles to throw with anticipation and prefers to play it safe and just check it down. Fields won’t fix these things in a month. These are things that he should’ve been working on since he got drafted and no progress has been shown.
Fields sucks…should’ve kept Aaron Roger’s..
You’re 100% right, we need one more WR. Proven WR.The best teams have explosive play ability and the pass game leads to most explosive plays. If we only have 2 guys who can make explosive plays in the pass game we are limiting ourselves and becoming a one trick pony. We should Bring in Coop, or trade for Jennings or Doubs. Jennings and Doubs are the better options as we can get more time out of them with this rebuild. But we can’t rely on Lazard who is trying to play himself out of the league
Bears fan here… the best thing the jets can do for JF is use him like the ravens use Lamar…JF is still a capable running threat and y’all have some solid running backs so read option, RPOs and getting him on the move is where he can thrive. If you want him to be better in the pocket I think the jets should get him another receiver thats a bigger target. GW will be the deep threat but he needs a guy that can be a short route reliable target. Im definitely rooting for y’all this season
He will have some rough starts but it’s how he comes out of it, at least it will be improvement over Arron Rogers let’s give him a chance.
It’s training camp, usually new offensive is alway behind defence in terms of efficiency. Give it time
Look playing QB is not reinventing the wheel here he’s been at QB for years now- not much expectation
A Lazard drop 😂 it’s gonna be along szn
Gabe Davis can be signed for NFL min salary. The Jaguars are paying his salary. He must not be 100% from miniscus yet if he isn't signed.
Why haven’t we signed Amari cooper already !!!
Nevermine the learning curve, He has been playing what 5 years now. The basics should be standard and sharp. I will live on that island if need be 😂
One thing to ponder, Glenn has Fields facing the fire in camp. Anyone remember Salahs glowing reports on Zach Wilson? It wasn't totally a lie , because Saleh all but scripted the practices to make Zach look good,to bolster his ego.
Glenn isn't doing that, he is having fields pounded to see the problems and he is saying Fields needs work, he isn't ducking it. People are acting like we paid fields a lot of money, we didn't , and it wasnt like this year was supposed to be a win now season..if fields fails we aren't stuck with a huge contract or blocked from doing something else next year. Sorry, Rodgers was not very good and for building a future good team was cultural cancer. Shadeur sanders? At least fields knows the NFL, sanders is no 4 on Cleveland QB depth.
If you are concerned about JF check out the game of his only one against the Steelers a few years back… passed for 290 and this team has more talent and are better coached… week 1 is around the corner
Your vid is on point. Ppl forget how good this defense is. And if you watch like youbsaid. Those wellnpaid and gifted defenders are doing their jobs. And this helps the offense because this is a top 10 defense. Chill out ppl
It's a no lose situation for the jets, Justin Fields contract is a 2 year contract similar to Tyrod Taylor, Justin Fields shows something great we have our QB, if not he replaces Tyrod Taylor as backup/Bridge QB as the jets draft lanorris sellers that's who Aaron Glenn is drafting if Justin Fields doesn't get it together.
This is unfortunately a 5 win team at best
It’s trianing camp, I don’t think it’s a bad thing, especially for a team that has undergone a lot of change this off season, to have some issues and growing pains. Better to work the kinks out in training camp and pre season game than the first few weeks of the regular season.
The visors might need less tint… besides that belief 120%
Probs late to the party but that new intro🔥🔥🔥
Vol alumni & fan here.. Jujuan Jennings is not the type character AG is looking for trust me
dude, not going to lie, i'm pretty nervous for the start of the season. A month comes by quick
Don’t care, it’s practice which is where we make our mistakes
We’re cooked
What I have learned from the Jets is that what you show in practice is what you bring to a game. This stagnant progress from the offense is bad. I don't like it Fields is a 5th yr pro QB and hasn't showed anybody that he can start and now I question the coaches like come on they didn't bring in nobody to compete with this guy?
Talk about trying to sugarcoat it already, yikes!! Hope for the best is all we can do.. im buckled up for another long season
Fields plain sucks. He doesn’t/can’t read half of the field. If his primary read is covered e tucks and runs. He did it in Chicago, in Pittsburgh and now he’ll do it in NY.
I like the new intro. So cool!
I know I've said it before but cool intro brother. Make it longer
