MLB LIVE🔴 Washington Nationals vs Oakland Athletics – Aug 5, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

Hello and welcome. Thanks for joining us. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the athletics and the Washington Nationals. And now, please welcome your and we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Washington Nationals about to get started here. And starting this one, McKenzie Gore. Chris, he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there. Well, incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters. You look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start. So, he’s a pitcher that wants the ball. He’s aggressive. He knows that he can get the swing and miss, especially when he needs it most. We’ll see how effective he is in this one. And now the center fielder Lawrence Butler swing and a tapper that rolls foul and he’ll one breaking ball in there for a strike. Here’s a guy at the plate I’m expecting to have a good game. He always seemed to play better in road games. in the air left field down the line and that will drop foul. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. He misses. It’s a strike out. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average. That one pushed foul. You got this headed towards the corner. And that is a foul ball. Well, he missed a hitable off speed pitch right there. Not sure exactly what the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move at the end. It never does. One ball and you’re tied up. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He notches strike out number 150 this season. No, anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning, got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction, table setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter. Any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie and instead of it being a solo shot, it’s a two or three-run homer. Two outs. Base is empty. Let’s go DC. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. That one missed two strike. And that’s way high. Two and two. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. Next pitch is inside. And now it’s three and two. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Swang and a highf fly ball. Pretty well struck right field and that one is off the wall and that’s a two out double. Just a great bat right there. Saw a lot of pitches. showed off some really nice oppo pop with that swing and just couldn’t get it over the fence. But I absolutely love everything about that approach and the mechanics right there. So runner at second, two down. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s and strike one to the catcher. Well, you always want to come out in the first inning, try to put something up on the board. It’s a big two out double right there. See if the cleanup man can drive him in and put a tally up there on the board. Heading down the line and that drops foul. The strategy of winning a ball game when you can make that pitcher work a little more, expose himself by throwing pitches, that could be the key to winning perhaps later on. So, good job of extending this inning, getting a knock with two outs to bring the number four hole hitter up. lined and that’s a base hit. Now a long throw home. Not in time. He scores and it’s one- nothing. Well done. Drives in the run. Ripping one into the gap or blasting one over the wall. There aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive into center field. So that definitely felt good. We’re under at first with two away. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Six. Third baseman Miguel Anduhar. Here’s Miguel Anduhar. just missed. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage. Two on, two outs. And that one is lifted in the air. Lyall puts it away. And that is that. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back in Washington DC and pitching in this one for the A’s, Jeffrey Springs. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of walk. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this, he’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. And another ball. Evidently not too impressed with that call and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner. So he’s making his case. You got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire and he felt this was his time. That one finds the zone. Two balls in a strike. out towards right center field. Cortez makes the catch and there’s one away. Here’s Dave Martinez lineup for the Nationals. Getting guys across the plate. Not exactly a forte for them this year as their offense is in the bottom third of the league in runs scored. Boo. It becomes extremely frustrating. And then what happens is guys press, especially in runcoring opportunities and situations. On top of that, I mean, you really make it harder on your pitcher. He feels like he’s got to be perfect to go out there and win a ball game or at least to put the team in a position to win a ball game. So, they’ve got to figure out a way to relax, get those runners across when they have them on and especially when they’re in scoring position. Missed with a change up and now it’s even one and one. Swang and a highf fly ball left field. Soderstrom two down batting third second base. Two outs. Base is empty. And now it’s Luis Garcia. First offering and it just misses 10 right through there for a strike. I got a ball. One strike. Foul ball. fouls it off. Still one and two. outside of the breaking ball. Good job to fight that one off on the ground out to short. Whips it to first. Inning over. So they make short work of him there. Second inning coming up from our nation’s capital. It’s the A’s one and the Nationals nothing. Back here in Nationals Park. New inning getting started. Here’s the rookie right fielder Carlos Cortez. What do you say now? Washington Gore back to work. Swing and a miss. That’s strike one. 01’s the count. and delivers outside. Dave Lawrence behind the plate today. Consistent and pretty accurate with the balls and strikes. Yeah, he’s one of those guys, Spook, that just keeps the game moving. Nothing overly unique about the strike zone that he calls and as a result, he’s appreciated by both sides. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Got the back going too soon. It’s strike two. Strike three. Frozen with the front door slider. Boom. He was chopping at the buckle right there. The way that slider made it look, that was just nasty. Max. Next up for the A’s, Max Schuman. Fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Next pitch is outside. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. reaches but can’t make the grab. Betting ninth shorts stop Daryl Hernese. One gone runner at first. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Daryl Hern and that drops in for a strike. Oh, and one. That one finds the zone. That’s strike two. Shootman leads off first with one away. The short stop takes the ball. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that Swaying in a ball popped in the air and that’s a fair ball and they’ll have runners at the corners after a one out single. Up next for the A’s, center fielder Lawrence Butler. So the lineup flips over. Here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. Went down on strikes his first time through. Little bit low. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Next pitch in for a strike. And the count is one and one. Runners at the corners. One away here in the top of the second. Breaking ball inside and that’s ball two. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. High in the air out to right. Lyle makes the catch. Runner tags from third. He scores on the sack fly. It’s two nothing. Oh, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough. And that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. Now a chance for Nick Curts. Struck out swinging his first time. Check swing and he went strike one. One’s the count. bounced up the middle. Garcia sends it to first. Third out. They get a run on, two hits, no errors, and a man left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the A’s two and the Nationals nothing. We head to the bottom of the second. Here’s Josh Bell. Washington designated hitter Josh Bell. A little bit high. And that’s ball one. That to right. Cortez sizes this one up and there’s one down. Batting fifth, first baseman. Nathaniel Low up to hit. Let’s go. And first offering is fouled off. Just And that one is downstairs now. Two balls in a strike. One out. Base is empty up the middle and he knocks it down. Still able to get it there in time. And they do get the second out of the inning. Stop. Paul D. Two down, base is empty. Paul De Young now at the plate. Strike one. 0 and one. And a big swing and a miss. No balls, two strikes. goes down looking. Nothing doing it for Washington and they’re down two nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top half of the third inning. Now the A’s designated hitter Brent Rooker. Rooker in his fourth year, 30 years old now. He’s usually in right field, but today he’s getting the DH treatment. Pitch is in there. Going along. Well, a nice day off for him, not having to jog out to the outfield. Gets to be in the DH spot. Be curious to see how he keeps himself in a rhythm, not playing defense. Oh, great stop. Gathers and throws. It’s there. And that’s a great play. Definitely not a comfortable play to make down there in third when it’s ripped at you like that. Pretty impressive stop though. He kind of stabbed at it, got up, completed the play. You know, some guys are just waving at that one as it goes by to the outfield. So now it’s the fourhole hitter, Shay Langalers. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. Left field. Wood has this one sized up. Reaching for it, makes the catch. Got to love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. Leftielder Tyler two out space is empty. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. One for one with a single so far. And that misses. And it’s one and0. All one. No strikes. And that one upstairs. in the air. Left field down the line and it stays fair around first. Digging for two to second. Pulls him off the bag. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. So runner at second, two down. Now the third baseman, Miguel Anduhar clips the corner. That’s strike one. Runner at second. Two down. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. That one outside and it’s one and one. Thought Chris through the early stages he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s there’s a swing and a drive. One hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. Runner from second scores as they add on. Picks himself up an RBI. Everything was mechanically sound with that swing right there. And that’s pretty much what you’re wanting to replicate with every rep you take. You want good balance barrel directly to the baseball and good long extension after contact out in front of home plate. Man, there are a lot of doubles in a swing like that. And in scoring position with two away and the batter now, Carlos Cortez caught looking his first time up just off the outside edge. And that is ball one. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Number 61, the rookie right-hander is getting loose. swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. Young snags it and that’ll do it. A’s get one on the RBI double. It’s now 3 nothing. And we’re back as we go to the last of the third. Digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder Dalon Lyle. And there’s a fly ball deep right field back there. He won’t get there. And that should be extra bases into second easily with a leadoff double. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. A lot of times in today’s game, right fielders are able to get to a ball that stays in like that. But he hit that one pretty well. And if he hits it just a little bit different on the barrel, it’s out of here easily. But there’s nothing wrong with the extra bases right there. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And now the switch in catcher, Drew Millis. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Lyle at second with nobody out. And that one fouled off. And now the lefty late swing fouled all one and two now on the ground right side and foul ball. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the last half of the third. And a foul ball. He stays alive. man at second. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like. But you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. Foul ball still a one and two count. knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Seven fouls in a row. Such an impressive at bat we’re seeing right here regardless of how it ends up. Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. This is something else. Running that pitch count off. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for the pitcher to have so many good pitches spoiled off like this. about to see the 11th pitch of the at here. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. The 10th foul ball of this at bat. I mean, this is pretty special, folks. got him swinging batting night. And now for Washington, Jacob Young singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. Hit in the air right field. And there’s two down. Now batting third baseman CJ Abrams. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. Fly to right. His first time. That one’s in there. Strike one. And ball one. Two outs and one in scoring position. The one-1 is fouled off. Pitch misses. The countdown now two and two. Let’s go now. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Runner at second. Two down. Popped up middle of the diamond. Schuman. He’s there. He’s got it. And the inning is over. So no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. Three innings complete. It’s the A’s three and the Nationals nothing. Back in Washington DC, John Chi with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth, Max Schum. And first offering is fouled off. You know, these A’s showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. swing and a miss. One and two. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. swinging a miss that one in the dirt in time and the drop third strike leads to the first out. You know, Boo, you often think of sliders more for that horizontal movement, but most of the good ones have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement, and that’s what we saw right there. Good drop on the break and got him to swing over the top. Hern batting with one down. Takes a strike. The count inside. Just missed. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline. Breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job. So now one and two. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. One down. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. Looked off balance that time. Milis down to first with it. And there’s two gone following the strike out. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. So, the batting order turns over. Now, here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. The lefty, the one If he doesn’t get a knock right here, that pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while. You might not see another pitch like that from a top level guy like this. The one fouled off and they’ll do it again. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. On the ground to Young tosses to first. That’s the third out. And one, two, three go the A’s. But they lead it three nothing. Bottom of the fourth. Now the left fielder James Wood. This kid picked up in a train. A lot was offered and given to get him, but he’s got a real high ceiling. First pitch misses. Well, these Nets, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond. And they just keep eating right out of your hand. A swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. That’s tough. if you see it. Well, I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. But when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, Garcia at the plate for the second time as he takes ball one. Now one out to right. Cortez under this one. They got it for out number two. Now batting designated hitter. Two down. Base is empty. Josh Bell will hit next. He’s 0 for one. First pitch and he just misses. The A’s leading by three. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering in there for a strike and the count even at one. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Next offering way stairs. Drilled out towards left center field and he makes the catch and that’ll do it. All set for the start of the inning. And now Nick Curts. Gore back to work and first offering is fouled off. You know, these athletics really impressed me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see him go to work. The numbers help tell the story. I mean, they’ve been sitting fast ball and it’s paying off in a big way so far with six hits against that pitch alone. A little out front there as he swings through it. And that’s a great way for a lineup to dominate a game because if a pitcher can’t rely on his fast ball to get outs, I mean, that puts a lot of pressure on the rest of his pitches to be effective. throws to first in time and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Up next for the A’s, the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. Brent Rooker. Up next for the A’s, one for two. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Come on. Hey, swing and a miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. Chris, third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter. Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. Economical with the pitch count. Langelers stands in with two away as he takes a ball. whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. Ranging back, pulls it in on the warning trap. Back here in Nationals Park. Bottom of the inning. And now the first baseman, Nathaniel Low. Low. First pitch doesn’t find a zone. You know, these Nationals, they’re not going to be happy with the ad bats they’ve been having so far. Just one base runner to this point. And it’s not exactly early anymore. They’ve got players in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for them yet. Go back. Next offering is fouled back. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Got him. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Now it’s Paul D. Young up to the plate. struck out looking at his first at bat. Yeah, there’s the strike. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. One down, base is empty. Just off the inside edge. This one high in the air to left center. Butler sizing this one up. Calls it in. And there’s two away. Now batting the right fielder, Dalon Lyall. Two out. Space is empty. And now here’s a speed threat. Outfielder Dalon Lyle doubled in his first AB. Swinging a foul straight back. The Nets trailing by three. Last half of inning number five. And that one just missed off the outside edge. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Oh, this offense has just been locked down. Almost five full innings of shutout baseball. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two down. Nobody on and that just misses. got him looking and he did not like the call and the Nationals gone in order. Still down three nothing. On the pitch now for the Nationals, Mitchell Parker just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Mitchell Parker. Here’s the left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. Left fielder Tyler Sodrom. In the air, pretty deep out to center field. Young settles underneath it. Carous it and a quick out number one. He was all over that first pitch fast ball but just barely missed it. Man, this guy was ready to hit. Miguel Anduhar the next to hit. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. Swing and a ground ball out to short. Tosses across to first. Now two away. Now batting right fielder Carlos Cortez. Carlos Cortez up next for the A’s. Cortez in his rookie season 27 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2018 and first offering is fouled off. Two outs. That’s hard hit in the line and puts the squeeze on that one. And that is that. Three up, three down for him there. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the six. It’s the A’s three and the Nationals nothing. Bottom of the six and it’s the catcher for the Nationals, Drew Millis. Drew Millis. That misses one and0. No, that’s down. Oh, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. And there’s a foul ball. Fast ball in the inside corner for a strike. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Right through there. Got him. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Young batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. activity in the bullpen for the A’s. Mason Miller, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Sterner getting loose as well. That one ripped. It falls in and that’s a hit. And they have their first base runner since the third inning. Nice. Now that in third base only two hits allowed so far tonight. So I don’t think that one will disrupt his momentum all that much. You know, he’s really been on top of his game, commanding his pitches all night long. So the Nets lineup turns over. Here’s CJ Abrams now for two in this one. Yeah, the strike. It’s just been an impressive outing so far. Continues to pound the zone pitch after pitch and he’s been able to stay down. That’s what’s been key. Upstairs. One and one. Young leads off first with one away. Just missed. Next one is off the play. Three and one. Here’s an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense. 3-1 count. Be ready to turn on a fast ball. and he grounds one to the right side, steps on the bag for one, and he beats it. He’s saved. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution, James. Up now for Washington, James Wood. You talk about the power and the speed together. Well, we knew he was going to be a stud just coming up. Making his way through the minor leagues and quickly at this level an impact player. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Man on second. Two down. That one fouled off. Struck him out looking. So, one left for Washington. They trail in this one three nothing. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Kyle Finn again. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers. So, he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Here’s the second base, Max Schum. basement. Max Schum. And there’s a ball. Swing and a high-fly ball down the right field line. Lyall pulls it in on the run. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. He swings and fouls one off. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. Swing and a miss and that’s strike two. Activity in the Washington bullpen. Mike Sroa looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Rubio warming up as well. One down, base is empty. Swings and misses. It’s a strike out. Slider got him for strike three. Well, that right there is just a pitcher pitch. Tailing away from the hitter. blowing away with some good action at the end. You know, even if he gets the bat to that ball, it’s probably just a weak ground ball to the opposite side. I tell you what, that’s a tremendous two- strike pitch. Butler in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike lined and that’s a base hit. And they have their first hit since the third inning. Now batting first base Nick. And here’s the first baseman Nick Curts 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. late on that fast ball. Well, you got to find a way to catch up to that pitch. Perhaps shorten the swing, eliminate the stride. That one came in hot. But right down the middle, you’re saying to yourself, “How did I miss that pitch?” Got to make a quick adjustment and takes low for ball one. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Two outs. Here goes the runner way inside and that hit him. He had him one two and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. Brent Rooker getting ready to hit. One for three. Come on, man. Let’s go. And that’s in him for a strike. One now. Just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. That misses the zone. And one and one. Swings through that one for strike two. Thought there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see. And he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. Two on, two outs. Swang and a miss. Struck him out. And that is that. A strand a couple. They’re on top by a count of three to nothing. Now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Mason Miller. He has a great slider with tons of movement. And now up for Washington, Luis Garcia. Washington, second base, Luis Garcia. First pitch just misses. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Swings through that one for strike one. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. That one in triple digits. I think he was sitting off speed there. In the air, center field. Butler sizes this one up, puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Now batting designated Josh Bell at the plate now. Just missed. That ball went out. in there at the knees. One ball, one strike. And a swing and a miss there. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. The Athletics leading by three here in the bottom of the seventh. Got him now. Two out. You think he caught him off guard with a fast ball right there, Chris? He didn’t look ready for it. Yeah, no doubt. I think that’s exactly what happened. You looked at the sequence of pitches. He didn’t see anything firm until that last fast ball. So, you got to think he was still sitting off speed and just couldn’t react quick enough to even get a swing off. That’s good pitching right there. Here’s Nathaniel Lows. Swang in a highf fly ball. Well struck left field. Sodrom going back on this one and it hits the fence and he’s got a double. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. So close to blasting that one out of here the other way. But that’s very tough to do when you take on the outfield gap like that. Beautiful swing though. Let the ball get a little deep and drove it to the opposite field. Now a huge bat in this game coming up. So runner at second, two down. Paul D Young digging in for the Nationals. That one missing inside. Low on at second with two down that just misses. Two and 0. Miller. He’s kind of a prototypical bullpen arm in today’s game. Electric stuff that results in a ton of strikeouts in a tough spot like this. That is a big time benefit. Now he can’t squeeze it behind the plate. Dalon Lyle waiting in the on deck circle. They can get him up. He’d represent the tying run. So critical pitch right here inside. And that’s ball four. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire bat. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Mason Miller won’t go any further. It’s a three-run game. And we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now pitching for Justin Sterner taking over on the mound. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big RA. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. First and second, two outs. Next to hit for the Nats, Dalon Lyall and a fast ball misses outside for a ball. Ball one. The tying run at the plate. This one in the air center field. Butler moving under it. And that will end the inning. So the Nets leave a pair. They trail it here. 3 nothing. now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the Mauricio Rubio on for his major league debut. So, we’ll see if he’s ready for the big stage. He just has to remember this is the same game that he’s played all the way through the minor leagues to this point. The only difference there just more people in the stands and it’s a bigger stadium, but the game itself is still the same. Look at the catcher. Whatever fingers he puts down, that’s what you throw and just let him lead you in this one. Langelers stands in here, takes ball one low. That one misses in the dirt. Got to be real careful here. 20. He’s hunting for his pitch. And it’s fouled away. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. He goes down looking now. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Sodro. Top of the zone for a called strike. Swinging a ground ball and it goes just foul. Got him. Dave Lawrence rings him up. Up next in Miguel and Down and away for ball one. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Ground ball to the right side. And that’s just fouled. The one-1 is fouled off. Two down to got him looking and he strikes out the side here in the eighth. Hayes go quickly and quietly there, but they lead it three nothing. Out of the bottom of the eighth and it’s the catcher for the Nationals, Drew Millis. Drew Millis. the pitch. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. That one ripped but foul. this to third and he can’t come up with it. Still able to fire over and the throw is late. They couldn’t overcome the misplay late in the game with the offense trying to play catchup. They’re looking for any momentum they can get, any kind of opportunity to get back in this game, and an error can certainly do that. Let’s see if that turns into something right here. Up now for Washington. Jacob Young. Check swing and he went. And that is strike one. Let’s go DC. There’s the strike. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. And now one and two. Milis aboard here at first with nobody out. And that’s down and away. Squirts away from Landoners. And now a man into scoring position. Well, that’s part of the risk when you throw a breaking ball in the dirt. Even as good as catchers are these days at blocking pitches, that one just got away enough. And that takes the double play opportunity away for now. Runner at second. Nobody out. Got him. Outside pitch. got the better of him that time. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breeds the sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. And now CJ Abrams 0 for three in this one. That catches the outside corner. That’s strike one. That’s down and in. One out and a runner at second. here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. And that’s outside. You got this. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Now betting James Wood digging in for the Nationals. Well, he’s always a threat. Even if this guy is 0 for three for the night with three strikeouts, he can come up that fourth time and do damage because he’s that good. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. That one finds the corner, it’s 0 and one. Almost got him. man at second. Hit hard but foul off to the left. wins a count. Chopped to first. Curts. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One error in the inning, but it doesn’t hurt him. Through eight full. It’s the A’s three and the Nationals nothing. And we’re back. Now it’s the right fielder Carlos Cortez. Rubio back to work on the ground right side. Throws to first. Now one gone in the ninth. Now batting second baseman Max Schuman. So up next, Matt Schuman. And a foul ball. Base is empty. One away here in the top of the ninth. Up the middle. whips it to first on the run and they get the out. Two down, base is empty. And now the short stop. Daryl Hern struck out on just three pitches last time. And that one upstairs, ball one. two outs. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Throwing the ball well and they need this scoreless inning and relief right here. Been doing a good job keeping him in striking distance. A short stop takes the ball. This one in the air. Rubio brings it in. And that is that. Offense held in check there. Hide of the order. 345 will get their shot in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the A’s three and the Nationals nothing. So, the closer summoned from the bullpen, Shawn Nukem, a chance in his first save of the year. Number 31, Shaun Nukem. Now, it’s the second baseman, Luis Garcia, 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. Luis Garcia That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And the pitch is in for a strike. And the count even one and one. Out to short. zips it across. One out. Bottom of the ninth. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks. Partner and now the switchhitting first baseman Josh Bell 0 for three with two fly outs and a strikeout. Swinging a foul out of play and Nukem fires. Swang and a miss and the count is 0 and two. The Nationals trailing by three here. The last half of inning number nine. Battling here as he fouls it away. That missed by a lot. And the count is one and two. That one missed. Swinging a highf fly ball. Well struck. That’s back there. It has the distance gone. He made him pay for that one. His 14th of the year. And they’ve got their first run. It’s 3-1. Just relentless. This team will not quit. They thought he could blow a high fast ball by him, but he was ready for it. Look at how quickly he jumped on that pitch. At the plate, Nathaniel Low fouled off left side. One out. Base is empty and a run in. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning on the ground to third. Boots it. Still finds a way to get off a throw and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Last chance for the Nats in this one. And now up for Washington. Paul De Young swinging a foul straight back. Next offering is in the dirt. Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. popped up. Hern A’s claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. Well, he does a nice job of coming in and getting the save. He made a mistake with the pitch. Gave up the solo home run, but he maintained his focus to push through to the finish line. And your final 3-1. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
