MLB LIVE🔴 Boston Red Sox vs Kansas City Royals – Aug 5, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
and welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. Major League Baseball on tap. It’s the Kansas City Royals and the Boston Red Sox. Alongside Chris Singleton, I’m John Shami. Well, Singy, when you consider the top hitters ballparks in the sport, this has got to be one of them. I’ll say this, pitchers have to stay with their game. They can’t look over their shoulder and think, “I have to be fine and perfect on every pitch.” Continue to pitch to your strengths and you’ll come out of here with a good outing. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set to go. And on the hill in this one, Brian Beo. What should we keep an eye on here? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. But coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. First pitch and he deals. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Now just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it inside corner for a strike. Now one and two. All slider so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. And the first out of the game is an easy one. And here now the lineup for the Royals singing. This righty heavy lineup is a bit unusual against a right-handed pitcher. Yeah, Boo certainly bucks the old conventional wisdom and I’m not sure I see the vision from the manager on this one. You’re not exactly putting your players in the best situation to succeed when you roll out a lineup like this. Maybe they’ve seen something on video that tells them there’s a weakness to exploit. Perhaps that’s it. Lifted in the air left field pretty well struck. Durant settles under and makes the catch. And there’s two down. So, digging in, Vinnie Pasquantino. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. And that one is inside. There’s the strike. One ball, one strike. And that one hit 97 on the gun. Two out. Space is empty. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. And that one actually will be grabbed by Story. And that is that. Royals go down. One, two, three. And now the Red Sox get their turn. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Boston and on the mound today, Jonathan Bolan and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earned run average. Roman Anthony leading things off and takes a strike. Next offering upstairs. Now one miss swinging a miss. It’s two and two. Two two. Ripped on the ground to second. Tosses to first. One gone. Bottom half of the first. Check out the Red Sox lineup. We could be in for a power showcase today with the wind blowing out, a lot of lift and separate, Chris. Well, we know hitters are in this era definitely trying to hit the ball in the air regardless of the conditions, but I think even a little more so there’s margin for error if you can get the ball up in the air. So, you know, you’ll see at times, I’m sure, with two strikes, what looks like a half swing that can get out of the ballpark with a That one is absolutely belted and it’s out of here into the home bullpen for a homer. That one felt good. Just like that, they move in front. It’s one- nothing. Wasn’t fooled on the first pitch at all. He squared it up right away. With such an emphasis on launch angle, a low curve ball plays right into the hands of those guys at the plate. Really good job of going down there and letting that swing work to get it back up into the air. And first off is fouled off. Red Sox already leading this one in the air right field and it’s caught for the outre Trevor Story comes up to the plate. First pitch misses. Just missed. in the air right side. He’s got it. And that is out number three. But they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. New inning getting started. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. Salvador Perez. Beo back to work. Not even close there. One and0. And a swing to miss. Time to check on our umpires. Earl Hris calling balls and strikes. Yeah, well-liked umpire, Boo. Pretty consistent with his zone. So, if you’re familiar with him and how he works, you won’t get too surprised by anything. Sometimes he’ll give a little bit off the corner, but nothing too crazy at all. That’s a ball. And that one missing low. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball three. 3-1. Started at the 3-1. Now a check. And down to first we go. And Woody Keller right on it. Says he held up. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Randall Gretchic now. There’s the strike of the knees. Yeah, that’s a little bit high. Think he wanted that call in the upper part of the zone, but just didn’t get it. Now he’s just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed, so he can adjust his sights just a little bit. The 1-1 tap foul at the plate. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. Not close with that one. Two balls, two strikes. Chopped left side to first. One out in the second. That is catcher Freddy Fine. Freddy Fine steps in for the Royals. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. man at second. And there’s a foul ball. Yeah. Big swing and a miss. Perez leads off second with one gone in the inning. inside. That hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Here’s Adam Frasier. Way outside and that’s ball one. Runners at first and second with one gone here in the top of the second. Liner at second from up here. It looked like that liner might be splitting the gap in right center. That’s one of those atom balls you just have to live with as a hitter. And stepping in the rookie left fielder. Keep an eye on this at bat because even though it’s early, it could change the outcome of this game. Look for your pitch and attack it. Ripped on a line. Should be extra bases. One runs in there. He’s safe. It’s 2-1. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. I’ll tell you, when you smoke a line drive into the gap like that, I mean, sure, home runs are king, but I feel like nothing makes you feel like a true professional hitter more than a bolt the other way. So, runner at second, two down. Kyle Isel steps in for the Royals. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One out. right through there for a strike. One and one. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. battling here as he fouls it away. Fights it off. He’ll see another runner at second. Two down. outside low and that’s ball two gets a piece and stays alive. Man on second, two down and it remains two and two. That’s down and in. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Mike El Garcia on deck for the Royals. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Tapped back up the middle. Slings to first. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double and it’s now a two-1 ball game. Bottom half of inning number two. Joe stepping in for Boston. Willard Abrau. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. and a strike. Well, he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up, he can go away, he can add velocity, he can subtract. Swinging at a ball popped up. Frasier. Hauls it in for the out. first base. So, up next, Romy Gonzalez. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Line drive. Base hit. just kind of slice that one into center. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still runner on the move. Late swing foul to the left. Gonzalez leads off first with one away. This one in the air with and he makes the catch and there’s two away. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Son Raphaela up next for the Red Sox. now. Move to first and he’s back in safely. There’s a strike. Now, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. And there’s a rocket into the outfield right past his coach headed for the plate. Here’s the tag. They get him. And that’s the unique and the Red Sox leave one. And our score remains 2-1. All set for the start of the inning. Now here’s the leadoff hitter for the Royals. Mel Garcia splits the plate and it’s 0 and one. Garcia in his second season, 25 years old and he was born in Venezuela. missed with a change up and it’s one and one. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Next offering is in for a strike. That’s inside. That one misses. So, a lead off walk for the Royals. Now, here’s Bobby Whit Jr. fly to center his first time. You know, Boo, this is a player with some serious speed. In 2023, he became the first player in 20 years to record two infield hits and an inside the park home run in the same game. Here’s the one with a short stop. Takes the ball. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. The one two and that’s who w it’s a strike out. And now the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino 0 for one with a fly out. There’s the strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. Next pitch is outside man at first away. Swang and a highf fly ball in the air left field. That’s back and it’s off the green monster. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. Showed off some really nice oppo pop with that swing and just couldn’t get it over the fence. But I absolutely love everything about that approach and the mechanics right there. And next is the designated hitter, Salvador Perez. And a foul ball. Pitch is in there and it’s nothing and two. got him swinging. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there, he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. Randall Gritic steps in for the Royals. Grounded out his first time off. That’s down and in. A slider missed. One and0. next offering is fouled back. Two outs and now two one. in the dirt. Freddy Fine. Next up for Kansas City, runner at second, two down. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. And ball four, two aboard. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. First and second, two outs. Here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. The Red Sox with some bullpen action. Garrick Crochet, a lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. And that is a good eye on a pitch down low. Now one and two. Pasquantino over at second. Gritic at first, two out of the inning. And the swing and a miss. Good job at damage control right there. One run in the inning, but they lead two. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Royals three and the Red Sox one. as we go to the last of the third leading off Conor Wong. it on the ground to short. Whit leadoff man retired here in the third. Roman Roman Anthony the next to hit. Grounded out his first time up. Swinging a foul straight back on the ground right side and it goes just foul. Ball one there. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Ball. One out. Base is empty. Misses. And now it’s three and two. Full count. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that one is lifted in the air and it falls. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Up next for the Red Sox. So digging in Abraham Toro. He’s already homerred here in this one. Ball one, no strikes. And another ball. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Abraham, that missed. That’s a ball and ball four to a four pitches. That’s an easy walk, man. He could have walked me right there, boo. The last one wasn’t even close. Now batting Jiren Durant flyed to right his first time. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something to hit hard on the ground that they can handle to turn too quickly. Swings through that one out front that time. Well, the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone. So perhaps he’ll come back to it. Still try to get that ground ball double play. One out. Runners are first and second. Line drive. Base hit. Anthony headed for the plate. Here comes the throw. He’ll score. It’s a one-run game. Oh, that’s two strike hidden right there. there. He did well just to put the ball in play. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Your story now. Pitch misses. And that’s ball one. Traffic on the bases with one already in here in the last half of the third ball outside. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Right through there for a strike. That’s inside and the count is three and one. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations and right here with a middle of the order hitter off runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Swaging a drive deep left field and brings it in at the wall. Now that rightielder William Abrau and stepping in for Boston, Will Abrau, in the grand scheme of things, this at bat might not feel important because it’s early, but it could create a domino effect for things to come. Control what you can here and have a strong at bat. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Now one and one. Toro the lead runner out at second. Durant out of first with two down. Popped up to the left end of foul ground. Squeezes it and the inning is over. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a 32 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And we’re back here at Fenway Park. Now at the plate, Adam Frasier fouled off. He was late. And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. Now the left fielder doubled his first time. There’s the strike up high and one. That missed. That’s a ball. Rudder at first with no outs here. just off the outside edge and it’s two and one. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. Squirts away a little bit. Two and two is the count. got him swinging make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there and deal with the next guy. And now it’s Kyle Isbel 0 for one so far. And that’s him for a strike. That misses. One and one. Was good pitch there. One and one. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. And that’s through there for a strike. Two and two. Two. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Really good battle right there. And that final pitch probably could have gone either way. He was hoping he’d get ball four. Instead, the umpire rings him up for the backwards K. Mikel Garcia digs in now. Come on, you can do it. First pitch misses. Swing and a liner foul off to the right. had a breaking ball. Misses outside to the right side. Raphaela whips it to first. Third out that ends the frame. No runs, no hits, no errors, and a runner left. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Royals three and the Red Sox two. Back here in Fenway, John Chavei and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Romy Gonzalez. to third. Garcia whips it across and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off man. Masataka Yosha. Here’s the left fielder Masataka Yoshida. He’s 0 for one. swing and a miss. Strike one. Threw that fast ball right by him. Gives him a little bit of confidence, but in the back of your mind, you got to think, is he trying to set me up for later in this at bat? The one-1 is fouled off. And that’s in the dirt. Two and two. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another one down. Base is empty. Swing and a line drive. That’s a base hit into left field. One down. Here’s the second base. Son Raphaela doubled in his first AB. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Yoshida at first, one gone. And ball one. Bullpen action for the Royals. Sam Long, the left-hander up and throwing. Cruz, a hardthrowing right-hander up as well. Run around to go. Fly ball down the line and it’s out of play. A foul ball. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Just misses with that one. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Foul ball. Another two-2 upcoming. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That one misses. Three and two now. Oh, this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. swing and he popped it off. Garcia, he’s got it. And there’s two away. Conor W. Connor Wong now at the plate. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Just miss one. That one’s in there and it’s one and one. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. This one in the air and that ends the inning. One left for the Red Sox. They trail it 3-2. Now, we’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Jordan Hicks. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Now, the number two hitter, Bobby Wit Jr. Bobby Wit Jun. edge of the zone for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Junior is one of only two players in ALL history to have 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in each of his first two seasons. Brew the other player, Julio Rodriguez and swing a miss and one out now. So he’s down on just three pitches. watched the first two and then chased after the third. Yeah, not a very good at bat right there, Boo. But that was also some excellent pitching. The O and 01 pitches were both right on the edge of the strike zone, so it’s not like he watched two cookies go by. Then a great job of expanding and making him chase the O2 knowing he would be in protect mode. And now Vinnie Pasquantino and that one off the outside edge. And the one hit on the ground to the right side. And that one finds its way through. So a man aboard now with one away. Now batting the designated hitter, Salvador Perez. And now it’ll be the cleanup spot for the Royals. Salvador Perez. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. And that is in for a strike. Go and one. Swinging a foul straight back. Yeah, that’s outside. Going to count one and two. One, two. Goes down looking for the strike out. That was pretty nasty. And now the right fielder Randall Gri. and he swings through that one. You tie a guy up like that, you feel like you are in command. Next offering is in for a strike. Swang in a bouncer out to short. Takes it to the base for the force out and that’ll do it. Royals leave one and it remains a 3-2 ball game. back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Sam Long. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. So, the Red Sox lineup turns over here. Now, the Red Sox DH Roman Anthony one for two. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Well, a come and get me fast ball right there. He didn’t look ready for the velocity. I think it’d be a mistake to throw him anything off speed right here. Pitch misses and the count is one and one. Ball. That’s high. in there at the knees for a strike. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Ground ball right side Frasier and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Third, Abraham Toro. Abraham Toro will hit next. He’s already homerred in this game. And a fast ball misses outside for a ball. Ball one. Home team down a run. Last half of inning number five. and now two and one after that missed inside. One down. Base is empty. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. He’s got it and that quickly two away. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Durant at the plate now. That’s ball one. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. And that one upstairs fouls one off. Two and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two down. Nobody on. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. So they make short work of him there. Five innings complete. It’s the Royals three and the Red Sox two. Top of the sixth inning. And to the plate for Kansas City, Freddy Fine. Firmine goes 5’9 in 29 years old and they traded for him earlier this year. And a foul ball. Well, these Royals really impressed me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see him go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. Ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. And a weak ground ball to the left side. Tosses to first and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Looking good. And that’s downstairs and outside. Base is empty, one away. And we’re the top half of the six. That one inside. Ball three. That’s ball four. Tried another sinker but couldn’t find a zone. You get a walk and you get a walk. Everyone gets a walk. And at first now the left fielder. First pitch and he just misses. Frasier leads off first with one away out front. Rip foul and strike two. One and two count. the one two in the air right field pretty well struck that’s back there and it hops over the wall for an automatic double that was loud contact and a no doubt doubled off the bat I didn’t know it was going to land in the bullpin though and he’s really improving his accuracy out there it’s Almost like he tried to do it. And next up for the Royals, Kyle Isbel. Golden opportunity right here. First pitch just misses. One out. Second and third. One away. fouled off left side. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at and a one count. Just not able to square it up. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. O’B makes the catch and there are two outs. Now batting Garcia. So the Royals batting order turns over. Digging in Mikel Garcia strike on the inside corner. I say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. Gives a little bit more confidence to move through the at bat. Two outs, two in scoring position. Highfly ball out to left field. Yoshida makes the grab and that’s the third out. No runs, a hit, two left. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Royals three and the Red Sox two. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Steven Cruz. and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Well, one-run game. Here’s the Boston cleanup hitter, Trevor Story. 0 for two in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Activity in the Kansas City bullpen. Taylor Clark getting ready to go. Shriber getting loose as well. Next offering upstairs swings and crushes. is one deep left field going on. He’s up to three home runs in the series. It’s 33. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. And now, Will Abrau, that catches the top part of the zone. That’s strike one. You know, these Red Sox doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game, and the numbers back that up. One thing that really stands out to me is how they’ve only struck out one time. That’s good discipline right there. And on top of it, they’re producing more than a hit per inning. Hit pretty well in the air out to center. Isel calls it in and there’s one away. All those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the ball into play. Anything can happen at that point. And next for the Red Sox, Romy Gonzalez. That one finds the corner. Strike one. No balls. One strike. And there’s a ball. One ball, one strike. That one fouled off. One out. Base is empty and a run in here in the bottom of the six. outside low and a count now. Even up swings and lines a base hit into left field. Didn’t exactly square that one up, but sometimes you don’t have to. That line drive isn’t going to light up Statcast or anything like that, but he gets the job done. and he just kind of caught her in a weird spot at the bat, but he didn’t get cheated with the swing, that’s for sure. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. And the batter now, Mataka Yoshida, and that one fouled off. Gonzalez, the base runner at first with one out. pickoff throw and he just got his hand in there. 01 now. Right through there for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. One ball, two strikes. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. And now two and two. Boom. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Up and in. And a full countdown. So here we go. Base runner at first. could be running on the pitch. He’s got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position, even if it’s a swing and miss at the plate. On the ground, left side. Six four three play and the inning is over. The Red Sox pick up a run on the homer. We’re tied now at three apiece. Back after this on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Brennan Bernardino. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. And he grounds one to the right side and that’s a foul ball. swings through that one for strike two. Boston’s bullpen with some activity. Justin Wilson, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Whitlock, the right-hander, also getting loose. And that’s in the dirt. trying to keep good speed off the bases. Oh, that got him. You hit him. And the go-ahead run is on base to lead off the inning. Go ahead run on base. Vinnie Pasquentino the next to hit. Bernardino picks over and he’s back in on a dive. in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Runner on the go. Pitching for a strike. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. And that makes it 30 stolen bases for him this season. man at second. That’s a ball. One, two, stays alive. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. a base hit. It’s probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Hanging in there pretty good against the lefty. swing and a miss. Stuck him out. Had him out front for strike three. That’s a pretty nasty pitch right there. I call it a power curveball in the 80s. It’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swinging strikeout. Salvador Perez steps in for the Royals. Breaking ball inside. Ball one. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Swing and a miss. One one. Next pitch downstairs. Two balls in a strike. Two balls, one strike. That one is upstairs. I almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Randall Gritic in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. That’s towards center. Durant sizes this one up. Brings it in. out number two. Now batting right. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Randall Gritic steps in for the Royals. Just missed. Check swing called strike. Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position. Next pitch is outside. Man on second, two down. Just off the outside part of the plate. That’s a really good take. fouled off again and it remains three and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Got it. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Taylor Clark. And if you dig into his walk rate, his numbers are really impressive. He’s really filled up the strike zone this season. So these batters better be ready to swing the bats. Joel stepping in for Boston. Son Raphaela Raphael and the first pitch misses for ball one. basketball for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Throws to first in time. And one away in the bottom of the seventh. Conor Wong. And here’s the catcher, Connor Wong. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Gritic pulls it down. Two down. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent pace. Roman Anthony up next for the Red Sox. One for three. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Gets the outside corner with that one. What about him playing another position on defense? One that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if Push came this one swung on and hit well way back there, that one is gone. That should put a jolt into this home crowd. Third home run of the season. It’s 43. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Well, not every home run is a majestic blast off the bat. And even He hit it pretty well. It was anything but a sure thing to get out. But today, the conditions were right. He got just enough of it. And I think the backspin really helped that thing carry. Here’s the third baseman, Abraham Toro. That missed by a lot. And it’s one and0. Fell on the M. This is a spot where he’s got to treat this as a clean inning. Forget about the home run. Forget about now being behind on the scoreboard. Start fresh and get those hitters back up to the plate as quickly as possible. Right down to shoot and account one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. Popped up. Frasier makes the play and it’s out number three. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now a 43 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Greg Weisser should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Well, one run game. And to the plate for Kansas City, Freddy Fine. That’s in for a strike. The Red Sox with some bullpen action. Aldis Chapman, the lefty with big swing and miss stuff, is getting ready. that one the other way and no one can get there and the tying run is on with a leadoff single. Now he turns and heads for second and he beats it. He’s safe. Well, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now there are several ways that they can get this run across. runner in scoring position. No outs. Now it’s the second baseman, Adam Frasier. Left field. Yoshida gets there. He’s under it. And there’s one down. Here’s the left fielder. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, but not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. Slashed foul down the right side, then a hook off into the seats. So the tying run at second and fouled off. Here’s the O2 outside. ball. Two strikes on the ground to short. Sends it across to first and there are two outs. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Kyle Isbel steps in for the Royals. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout. Little chopper rolls foul with the tying run at second and we’re in the top of the eighth. Yeah, that’s fouled off. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes in the dirt. Blocked and an excellent job keeping it right there for me at second with two down. Fouls it off. Still one and two. fights it off. He’ll see another pitch misses there and the count’s even at two. battling here as he fouls it away. Here’s a two- two. Gets a piece and stays alive. Ninth pitch of the at bat. do next. Right through there. Got it. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Back inside Fenway Park. Bottom of the eighth. And stepping in for Boston, Jiren Durant. Here is Durant. Clark back to work and takes low for ball one. And that one hit to first. Pasquantino takes it to the bag. One up, one down. Trevor Story. Here’s Trevor Story. just missed. Bases empty, one away here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. That’s outside now two and0. And another ball. That’s a ball in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Ball four. Tried another curve but couldn’t locate it. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Man at first with one gone. And next for the Red Sox, Willard Abrau 0 for three in this one. Foul ball there. One-run game. One out, one on. And that one in the air center field and makes the grab. Two away. Romy Gonzalez digs in now. Highfly ball out into left center field. Isbel nabs it and that is the third out of the inning and the Red Sox leave one, but they hold on to a 4-3 lead. Now pitching. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Aldis Chapman. And I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard and you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. And now it’s going to be Mikel Garcia. And that one a little bit high. 10 out looking to get the tying run on base inside. Just missed. Running that good fast ball up on the hitters inside. If nothing else, it keeps him from diving out over the plate to get those arms extended on the pitch away. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball three. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. In for a strike and the count is three and one. Ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Second walk of the game for him. and he’s been really patient at the play, the game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there with up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. I think you want to get a one-way lead. be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter not a power guy, so you want to make sure that he can get some Here goes the runner. Pitch inside. Throw to second. He’s in there. And the tying run is now in scoring position. Crowd locked in right now. one-run game here in the ninth. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. So the tying run at second late swing fouled off. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things that when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. Now, here is Vinnie Pasquentino. Fast for a strike. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. One and one in the dirt. And it’s a ball and a strike as the runner holds. Chapman now one-run game and that is out of play. Swings and misses. Stop him out. Royals down to the final out. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Last chance for the Royals. Here’s the Royals designated hitter, Salvador Perez. And that’s in for a strike 0 and one. Check swing appeal to first and he went around just enough that time. Chapman is just one strike away. That’s off the mark. It’s a ball in two strikes. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider on the ground to third. Throw to first ball game and the Red Sox hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, it looks like the pitcher was getting into a little trouble there, but quickly brought out a pitch that isn’t what most hitters are looking for with that great velocity, but it was really good movement on the change up and a nice win today.
