A former Miami Heat security officer has been charged with a felony after he allegedly stole millions of dollars worth of items from the team, including over 400 game-worn jerseys.

The U.S. Attorney's Office of the Southern District of Florida claimed on Tuesday that 62-year-old Marcos Thomas Perez stole items when he had access to the Kaseya Center equipment room during his time as a Heat staffer — and later, an NBA security employee — from 2016 to 2025.

"This equipment room stored hundreds of game-worn jerseys," the feds said, "and other memorabilia that the organization intended to display in a future Miami Heat museum."

Perez allegedly stole numerous high-profile items and sold them through online marketplaces. The feds say over a span of three years, Perez made $2 million from just 100 sales, including a LeBron James NBA Finals jersey, which they said sold for $100,000.

  1. Greed is the death of us all. You’d think after a while you’d flee and never look back if you’re committing felonies.

  2. Damn. What’s crazy is that to the players/org…it’s just a jersey. Which it just is, right?
But it manages to become a series of thefts worth $2mil.

  3. I aways thought an easy trick to steal game used gear for someone with the access is to just switch the jerseys out with official ones bought at a retail store. Is that not the case? If you need them to also smell like sweat just put one on and run on the treadmill for a few minutes. How would anyone know the difference?

  4. The LeBron jersey got sold again for 3.7 million, what are they doing about that guy.

  5. That’s a lot of money!

Impressive he got away with it for so long but flew too close to the sun.

  6. 100k for a lebron finals jersey seems cheap but I guess its all cheap compared to MJ and Kobe memorabilia

  7. I’m honestly surprised he was able to make $2m. Most sports memorabilia’s value is tied toward having some sort of authenticity that way people know it’s legit and it’s able to be resold. I guess there’s pawn stores/fencing operations that deal to people in the underworld or people that don’t care but even then I’m surprised he was able to get that much and do it for that long.

  8. Can’t blame the guy for trying. He was probably making $16 an hour with no OT.

  9. Never thought about it til now, but is it normal not to keep inventory of the equipment? Kinda surprised that no one noticed 400 jerseys were gone.

  10. Always been curious who owns player-worn equipment…? Why don’t Steph and Lebron just put their jerseys and shoes on ebay after every game….

  11. Rich Paul sells jerseys out of a trunk and he’s a millionaire

This guy sells jerseys and is in jail.

    Funny how life works

  12. This is nuts. I used to date his daughter and him and I were real tight. Such a wild story. Let’s hope the stuff I have isn’t stolen lol

  13. Is it just me or does it feel like there’s just more crimes this off-season. It’s like the off-season’s theme is crime.

  14. On a similar note, I’m not sure why athletes don’t keep all their jerseys to sell off instead of risking getting caught gambling. Even if you’re a bench guy, that’s ~82 game worn jerseys you can sell well beyond fanatics price.

  15. Cool. Some small time dude gets all the resources from the government to make sure he gets punished.

Yet high crime and misdemeanors go unpunished. Our president is a pedophile.
