JP Sears on being traded to the Padres, and why he’s so excited for Mason Miller

the last 24 hours and when you found out and how it went down for you. Uh yeah, I uh received a text from my my manager Mark Cotay yesterday morning and um just told me to give him a call and um that you know that I was in the I was in the middle of a trade. So um yeah, it was exciting news and um obviously it’s been a crazy last 24 hours. What are your thoughts on coming to the Padres’s and being part of this postseason push and this? Yeah. Yeah, it’s super exciting. you know, um, you know, I I we played here last year and and I was the fans left a big impression on me and the stadium and, you know, we heard so much about how much, you know, liveless the team has and, um, yeah, these group of guys here so far have been so nice and, um, they seem like a tight-knit group, so I’m excited about it. Mark Conte, you played here for a few years ago, a long time ago, didn’t give you any advice about playing San Diego, living in San Diego. He said, I mean, the number one thing he said was just enjoy it and keep doing your thing. I mean, he he loved it here and um I’ve heard nothing but great things and um you know, he talked a lot about the fan base and how, you know, how aware they are and how, you know, how many games they come to and how many fans, you know, how many sold out crowds you guys have had and um you know, just a little bit about living and stuff. So, um yeah, he’s been a great, you know, mentor for me and um you know, he made me a little bit, you know, even more excited about it. So, what do you hope to add to the Padre’s team? Yeah, I just hope to just provide, you know, depth and um you know, just be out there every day and and just know that uh you know, I’m going to give it my give it my best and um you know, can go out there and compete and um just throw the best quality innings I can and um you know, just do my best to help this squad. What’s it like watching Mason Miller day in and day out? Yeah, I’m excited for y’all get to watch him even more. um he’s such a poised uh you know comp competitor and um he he knows his stuff and um yeah obviously throws throws the ball really really hard and um has a great slider too and um just works really hard and you know he’s a good teammate so I think these guys here are going to love him and um you know I’ll continue to support him and and watch him throw the ball so it’s been fun. Ruben Aless kind of developed a reputation as a pitcher whisperer. Uh have you interacted with him at all on the Got a chance to talk to him? Yeah, I talked to him on the phone yesterday and then you know obviously met him here shortly um ago. Um yeah, and he was super nice and uh it seems like that, you know, we’re going to get along great and um all the guys here have talked a lot about him and um said nothing but nice things. So yeah, it’s been great to get to know these guys and you know, some of the staff and obviously, you know, it’s it’s a big day and exciting day and still trying to learn names and all that, but yeah, it’s it’s been fun so far. What’s it like for you personally to go from just a difficult situation in Sacramento ballpark, not having a true home to just jumping into all of this? Yeah, I think that um you know, baseball is is funny cuz it doesn’t really matter where you are. you know, it’s all about just between the lines and just knowing your job. And so, um, it’s definitely a different, you know, atmosphere and a different scene. Um, but at the end of the day, um, you know, it’s going to be a bunch of people yelling and, um, bunch of bunch of baseball and and I’m excited for that. And, um, and, um, I just know that last time I played here, last time I pitched her, I maybe one of the most fun times I’ve had in the game, even though we lost um, just because it seems like the crowd was so involved and, um, the weather’s so nice here and all that. So, I’m just excited and I’m excited to get it going.

  1. I'm a huge A's fan – the Padres will like JP and Mason. JP will give a lot of quality innings but has a tendency to give up a lot of HRs. Go Padres!

  2. Sears can really fill in on the back end on the rotation, so glad he's here! Hope bro can pitch a bunch of quality innings for the team!

  3. He's a great kid, but does the media really need to ask the players the same questions before and after every damn game? What do you think of these fans? What do you think of this environment compared to wherever you were before? It must be exhausting for the players to have the same conversation with you for 162 games.

  4. A’s players are always excited and happy to be traded. And moving from Sacramento to San Diego must have been absolutely the best news for Mason Miller and JP Sears.

  5. as an A’s fan I’m happy when our good players get a chance to play for a competitive team. They earned it, A’s are depressing atp.
