Shohei Ohtani HOMERS for milestone, woman umpire gets called up! | Morning Lineup (MLB Daily Recap)

[Applause] And Otani swings, hits a highf fly ball left center field deep and has gone. A two-run homer for Showani and his 1,000th career hit from MLB.com. This is the Morning Lineup podcast. I’m your host, Mandy Bell. Today is Thursday, August 7th, and over the last 24 hours, there were milestone moments, near historic feats, contract extensions, and unprecedented news across Major League Baseball. And over the next 10 minutes, we’ll get to it all. Let’s get to it. A 1,000th career hit coming on a home run in a game in which he’s the starting pitcher. Is there anything more show Otani than that? At the time, the Dodgers were trailing the Cardinals one to nothing when Otani stepped to the plate to try to give himself some run support. With one hefty swing, he not only gave his team a temporary lead, but he entered himself into the history books once again. Smacks one in the air deep center field. Scott going back. Forget about it. It’s gone. Halfway up the pavilion, the Dodger pitcher launches a massive home run. Otani is just the third Japanese-b born player to reach the 1,000 hit mark, joining Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki. It also marked his 39th blast of the season, which is the third most in the majors behind Kowali and Kyle Schwarber. And yet, it was his pitching that was even more impressive. If you remember last week, Otani exited his start early due to cramping in his hip. If there are any lingering concerns that something was wrong, there shouldn’t be anymore. He threw four innings for the first time this season and struck out eight of the 14 batters he faced. He also hit triple digits on the radar gun six times, which is twice as many as he’s thrown in any other game this season. Now, the two- two pitch swung on miss. Strike three. Went right back to the breaking ball. Otani strikes out the side in the fourth. So maybe the Dodgers couldn’t capitalize on Otani’s performance and ended up falling to the Cardinals 5 to3. But the bigger win is knowing that the two-way version of Otani is progressing in the right direction. This topic would be much more fun if we could say Guardian starter Gavin Williams threw a no hitter against the Mets yesterday afternoon. Instead, we have to say the Guardians beat the Mets four to one after Williams gave up his only hit, a solo homer to Juan Sodto with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. He hits this one of the air to center field, chasing Martinez back to the warning track and the wall is off the wall and they’re saying it cleared the orange line. It’s a home run for Juan Sodto to break up the no hit bid. Now, a one hit eight and two/3s innings performance is outstanding. It’s everything any team could ask for from its starting pitcher. It’s a performance worth highlighting whether that hit was given up in the first inning or the last. Williams was so good that Mets fans at City Field gave him a standing ovation when he walked off the mound in the final frame. Look at the standing O from the hometown Mets fans. Guardians fans of course are thrilled, but that’s a great baseball town. But this almost no hitter maybe hurts a little bit more than most would. There are five teams who haven’t enjoyed a no- hitter since the 1990s. That’s a long stretch without celebrating this special feat. But there’s only one team who hasn’t thrown one since the8s, 1981 to be exact, and that’s the Cleveland Guardians. It was May 15th of that year that Len Barker threw a perfect game. Len Barker wind up. Here it comes. Fly ball center field. Manning coming on. He’s there. He catches it. Len Barker has pitched the no hitter. A perfect game for Len Barker. Since then, the Cleveland pitching factory has showcased some of the best starting pitchers in the game. Heck, they’ve had five SAI young winners since 2007, which is the most in MLB in that span. yet. Still, no, no, no. And for a franchise that also carries the longest World Series drought, having not hoisted that trophy since 1948, they’d love to at least erase their name from one of these historical facts. As close as Williams came throwing 126 pitches, the drought lives to see another day. But more importantly for the Guardians, Williams helped them notch their 19th win in their last 26 games. and they’re now just a game and a half out of the American League wild card. This wonderful game has been around for longer than a century and it was just announced that this weekend we’re going to see something we’ve never seen before. More after the break. [Music] This is no Sarah Lang’s level of research, but a quick Google search will say that there have been more than 760 umpires in Major League Baseball since 1901. Is that right? Who knows? But it sounds like it should be. And all 760 of them had one thing in common. They were men. And that’s fine. It’s not surprising. That’s a role that’s traditionally been for men. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a little girl out there dreaming that she can do that one day, too. This is exactly how every other glass ceiling has been shattered in this game. Whether it be from women working their way into the broadcast booths or onto coaching staffs. It all starts somewhere. And for female umpires, it will begin this weekend. MLB announced that Jen Powell will be the first female umpire to work a regular season game in Major League history this weekend during the Marlins Braves series. She’ll work a double header on Saturday and she’ll be behind the plate on Sunday. She was a AAA crew chief. She umps spring training games this year and last and has a resume that’d make people crazy to not give her a major league opportunity. As Sarah would say, good more, please. Elsewhere around baseball, before the Red Sox fell 7 to3 to the Royals, Boston made big news by signing their star rookie outfielder Roman Anthony to an 8-year $130 million contract. The extension that will begin in 2026 includes escalators that could make this deal worth $230 million. The Cubs got to celebrate two pretty cool feats in their six to1 win over the Reds. The first of which was rookie starter Kate Horton, extending his scoreless inning streak to 23 and a3 innings, which is the longest by a rookie pitcher in franchise history. The second was this. The O2 struck him out. He strikes out the side. Outstanding work. The immaculate inning. Andrew Kitridge enjoyed his 120th immaculate inning in MLB history and sixth overall for the Cubs. The Blue Jays once again woped the Rockies. This time it was 20 to1. During their three-game series, Toronto totaled 63 hits, which is the most by a team in a three-game set since at least 1901. Although Mike Trout hit career homer number 398, Junior Camroero enjoyed his third career multi-H homer game, one of which was 447 ft. In the Rays 5 to4 win over the Angels, the Yankees avoided being swept by the Rangers with a 3-2 win thanks to a Paul Goldmid homer in the seventh inning. The victory allowed New York to continue to cling to that final AL wildard spot. The Brewers became the first team to reach 70 wins this season with a 5 to4 victory over the Braves thanks to homers by Andrew Vaughn and Blake Perkins. Ryan O’Harn homered and Jose Glacia singled in the go-ahad run for the Padres’s to pull off a ninth inning comeback in a 3 to1 win over the Diamondbacks. Seattle scored seven runs in the first two innings to beat the White Socks 8 to6. And the Twins won back-to-back games for the first time since July 11th and 12th with a 9 to4 victory over the Tigers. To get caught up on the rest of yesterday’s scores, check mlb.com. 1. Don't women have their own successful baseball and basketball league. WHY can't man have their own thing going on without women bringing the drama
