Time to fire Pirates GM Ben Cherington? Breaking down another disappointing MLB trade deadline day

I sympathize with people. I don’t have a good answer for it. Like they’re basically banking on, well, we’re not going to pay a closer 9 million. Uh we’re not going to pay Brian $7 million to play defense and not hit. What track record do you have of spending money wisely under this regime? You you have nothing. You’ve made very few good trades. Maybe maybe none. Your free agent trade activity to try to address the offense thus far has been abysmal. and you also don’t spend a lot of money. So, why should anybody believe that all of a sudden you’re going to get this right? And I would rather see them bring a new GM in here with a new idea and it might be better. I don’t know if it’s going to work out, but I’d like to see I’d like to see them tread water for a little bit until you make some changes. They brought in Justin Horowitz. How quickly did the draft start changing? What if they bring a new general manager and change some things developmentally? What if those start changing? What if you start finding other people’s discarded trash and fixing it?

Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner and Pirates insider Noah Hiles to react to the MLB trade deadline and the moves the Pirates DIDN’T make. How should we evaluate deals to this point, which have sent names including David Bednar, Bailey Falter and Ke’Bryan Hayes out of Pittsburgh? Was GM Ben Cherington right to move on from Hayes, who was under contract for several years beyond 2025? And what can we expect from acquisitions like Cam Devanney and Sammy Stafura?

  1. K bron homered tonite for Reds in a eight run comeback but as usual his team lost in extra.Could it be Kbron is a jinx? What would you say uf the new Pirate lucky team started getting 12 hits a nite without his four outs a game ,just like tonite? 74 wins ;watch, tied with New Reds😮

  2. By trading Falter and Bednar, while still having team control, they should have received at least one AAA bat ready to play and help next year.

  3. Time? It was time before the year started. The GM has been a total disaster. Beyond shocking how bad the recent trades were. MLB talent for mostly guys struggling in A-ball. There was the 28 year old with a 3.77 AAA ERA and 5 IP in the MLB for his career. Best might be the 27 year old "prospect" who has never played in the MLB. Much of the trade pieces for a short term rebuild have already been traded … for warm bodies. Can't even claim they are working towards winning next year when they trade guys under control next year for A-ballers.

What a joke. Might as well find another team to root for. No point rooting for a team that shows ZERO interest in even being mediocre.

  4. It's never gonna get better. Never
I quit holding my breath on that dream

Decided im done. I stop giving a damn about this dumpster fire the second Paul Skenes is traded. I've wasted too many years of my one life watching this garbage.

Can't wait to enjoy watching baseball again

  5. Falter trade was an embarrassment. It was reported they did this because they decided to non tender him. So..1. Why would you non tender a guy making a measly 2.5 million with his numbers. 2. Even if internally you decided to non tender him, which is insane, why would you make that known to trade him for peanuts. 3. A 2.5 million starting lefty with three years of control with a 3.5 ERA is worth 12 million in trade value, and they traded him for what? Maybe $300,000 in value? It was 100% incompetent. Falter was worth a high prospect or a position player based on value and WAR. The only possible reason no one offered anything was Cherrington bungled him and everyone knew they were not going to sign him so low balled and the Pirates had to take anything.

  6. Getting 3 for 1 on Bodnar is typical Pittsburgh Pirates should have got a mlb ready player even if you have to add a second pirate
