Gavin Williams is turning into a STAR PITCHER for the Cleveland Guardians
Gavin Williams came within two outs of Cleveland’s first no-hitter in 44 years before Juan Soto homered with one out in the ninth inning, and the Guardians completed a three-game sweep of the reeling New York Mets with a 4-1 win Wednesday.
Williams (7-4) walked three and struck out six, including Francisco Lindor to lead off the ninth. But Soto homered just beyond the leaping grasp of center fielder Angel Martínez two pitches later for the Mets’ first hit since the fourth inning of Tuesday’s 3-2 loss.
The Guardians have not thrown a no-hitter since Len Barker twirled a perfect game on May 15, 1981. Their no-hitter drought is the longest in the majors.
There has not been a no-hitter in the majors this season.
Williams, who was the first player on the field in the ninth with nobody warming up in the Guardians’ bullpen, retired Pete Alonso on a fly to right but exited after walking Brandon Nimmo for the third time.
The right-hander threw 126 pitches — 17 more than his previous career high and the the most in the majors since Alex Cobb threw 131 in a one-hitter for the San Francisco Giants on Aug. 29, 2023. | https://www.espn.com/mlb/recap/_/gameId/401696620

I was just a kid and watched Lenny Barker's perfect game back on old channel 43… And I didn't appreciate it all when it happened lol! I remember Barker's curveball that night was amazing and I remember George Orta doing something big in the game….
And AWESOME sweep Guards! You guys are awesome! 😊
If Kwan doesn't agree to an extension this offseason….
moving on to offering it to Williams.
Unfortunately Guards would then be compelled to have to trade Kwan.
Doing similar to what Tanner Bibee did last year …. 🤷♂️
Ya he is and keeping him out there after the homer was irresponsible. Terrible management move.
Don’t forget the Indians were the team in the Armando Gallaraga’s blown perfect game by umpire Jim Joyce… that is the most famous recent no-hitter / perfect game scenario
This team is only 5 back in the loss column now to DET! 6 weeks ago, they were 15 1/2 back…..let that sink in for a few seconds.
Best record in MLB over the last few weeks and best bullpen ERA since July 3rd!
Gavin is a Boras client. . He won't be signing here
Hey Bull, they went 2-1 vs. Houston ….so 5 -1 vs. mets & astros…..still awesome!
Dang…when Barker pitched the perfect game…just saw Mike Hargrove played first base that night and Danny Ainge played in that game too lol!
There was no way they were pulling Gavin after 8 innings. There would have been a riot
The Guardians have done a great job making their season relevant again.
The guy was our no 1 prospect pitcher so yeah he should be the ace next season
WHEN GAVIN HAS THAT OFF SPEED AND CURVE BALL GOING. HE'S STRAIGHT NASTY.
Their defense is now very good. The infield is excellent, The hitting is coming around.
Here some history. Cleveland won a game without a hit in 1992 vs. Boston.
Tom Candiotti for the Indians pitched a 1 Hitter against the Yankees & lost.
Gavin William should be the next Browns quarterback and a kicker too
That's great. He looks like a number two starter to me. We traded away our number one guy at the break, just like we're going to trade away one of the top five outfielders in the game. It's becoming harder and harder to be a Cleveland baseball franchise fan when the ownership treats it's players like holdings in a penny stock portfolio. I;ve seen two former consecutive Cleveland Cy Young award winners start for the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies in the opening game of a World Series the very next year after the second guy got the award. I've seen Thome hit his 500th and 600th home runs for another team, and Manny his 500th. Seen the best shortstop in franchise history traded for a grab bag of players and those players traded because they became too expensive, only to get gambling guy in return. And I've seen management repeatedly fail to get a crucial bat or two any number of years when it was apparent the team on the field was really close and just needed to open the purse somewhat and buy a little additional talent.
And, as we all know, given the incredible talents that have come through here, if we just retained them and allowed the talent to build, this franchise would in all probability have had two or three World Series championships in the last 20 years. But noooo……..
This team has heart as much as we crapped on this team rightfully so, they got through the adversity of being 8 games under .500 and the allegations with clase and Ortiz, they’ve seem to brush that off and are now putting themselves in a spot where they actually have a good chance to make the playoffs, not a lot teams can do what they’ve done, lotta respect to the boys but gotta keep it up.
If he gets under 2 walks per game – qualified.
I felt sometime ago that Gavin was going to be a good pitcher but he walked too many people and because of that he gets behind in the count to much and then had to throw the 3 and 2 pitch right over the plate and we'll we knows what happens
