Houston Astros Get another Arm, and head to The Bronx to take on the Yankees

Well, the Houston Astros go out and get a pretty solid left-handed relief pitcher to take the mound as they go to the Bronx. Carlos Koreah is hot and the Houston Astros have the Mariners right on their tail. Let’s talk about this right now. Yel Diaz, this is Locked On Astros. [Music] Hello and welcome to Locked On Astros, your daily Astros podcast. Here are your hosts, Eric the Man Heisman, and Brett Htown Wheelhouse Chansy. [Music] Hey everybody, HTown Wheelhouse here with Locked on Astros. You know me, myself, and my co-host Eric who’s not here tonight. He will be back on Sunday. Um, we have about 16 years podcasting experience through whether it’s through podcast, whether it is through written, word, and or radio like Eric did at one point with Talking Stros. Um, we remember this is Locked on Astros and we are your team every single day. This episode is brought to you by Game Time. Um, Game Time, if you download this app, create an account, and use the code locked on MLB for $20 off your first purchase, you will enjoy the game for less. So today’s show, we are going to talk about this new left-handed pitching option, a relief pitcher who I think is someone who’s going to add a sal solid arm to the pin, the corresponding moves with that. Um the offense is waking up, but is it enough? And when I’m going to ask is it enough, I’m going to also talk about the surging Seattle Mariners. And then we have an appointment with the captain in New York, Aaron Judge, I believe, is back with the Yankees. And they have been on a skid lately. Will they continue their demise as the Astros come into town with about 47 games left in the season? So, the Houston Astros had a very active trade deadline. We talked about it. We cover it like we do on all things Houston Astros here at Locked On Astros. And I think most of us were very pleased. I think there were the naysayers that didn’t like the Carlos Koreah um deal. They felt like we didn’t um force Minnesota to pay as much as we should have or or or that the club should have paid more towards his salary. Um Minnesota that is coming back to Houston. But that’s neither here nor there because Carlos Korea has been swinging a hot bat. And before we get to that, that will be our second segment where we will talk about the offense waking up. I want to talk about our new pitcher. Um I I really like this move. Um his name is Ino De Los Santos and I’ve got a I’ve got a couple things that have happened as a result. Okay, they signed him to a major league contract. Um he’s scheduled to join the Astros in New York to make room on the 40man roster. Right-handed pitcher Lewis Contras has been designated for assignment and Nick Hernandez has been optioned to Triple A Sugarland. Now, one of the things I like about Mr. De Los Santos, number one, um, he has his slider has a whiff rate of 38%. That’s solid. His reg his he now now he only has three appearances in the postseason, but he’s got a 0.0 RA, a strikeout, and three appearances in the postseason. Hey, small sample size or not, I’ll take that. And if you look at the seven seasons he’s played, he’s played for seven teams. So this is what you call a journeyman. Including the Phillies and the Guardians, who he played for most recently with the Braves. He’s 17-9 overall with an RA of 4.47 with 299 strikeouts on his career. And so I really like this move. I I think this guy is someone that can add depth to your bullpen, that can take the stress off of some of the guys that have been there all season long and going forward could be someone who could really be a difference maker. I mean, he was 5-2 and 23. He was 1 and2 last uh last year. Currently, he’s three and three. um you know and and this is a guy you get a guy with major league experience. He’s been on multiple teams. Um he’s seen different batters. He’s seen the game plan. He’s heard the game plan from different catching and and um and pitching and um coaching staffs that this should be something that helps the Astros out. Now, what about Shawn Dubin? I do not have an update on Shawn Dubin. And I know the last time I saw I know he was throwing going through his throwing progressions, but I’ll see if I can find out. Um a So he um he had a strikeout in his um first major league rehab on July 29th. So that’s a good thing. Um as of let’s see, today is the 7th. As of the 4th, um you know, he had that inning of relief um in Sugarland. So, he’s building back up. If we can get Shawn Dubin back and we can get him right and he can have a swing and miss type stuff, then I really think that Dubin, Deos Santos, guys like this could really help this team out. And, you know, Amos Santos is a left-handed option. So, there is always that. He does have wins under his belt, meaning he has been in games where they either have been behind or the team once he got to the mound took the lead and he was able to hold the fort down. So, that’s excellent. Um, I see y’all asking several questions. Ryan Presley, I do not know. I I haven’t heard anything that links Ryan Presley to um coming back to the Astros. I know a lot of Astros fans have contemplated. I know a lot of people are saying, “Well, he’s better than this guy. is better than that guy, but you would have to clear a spot for him. I don’t know that you’d bring him back on a minor league contract. Probably has to be a major league contract. So, more correspondents have to more corresponding moves have to be made or 60-day IIL stance, so on and so forth. So, it’s a lot more than just bringing Presley back. Um, could bre could could Presley come back and see a resurgence? Could he vastly improve if he comes back? Sure. I mean, anything’s a possibility, right? Um, so, uh, JRob says when Dubin comes back, he replaces Neries. I hope. Um, what are you saying, Mr. JRob? Are you saying you don’t trust Hector Neries? Come on. The guy with the fire, the guy who fans the flames of the other team. I mean, come on now. No, I’m joking. But the Astros right now need pitching help to where when you look at the start of the season, the pitching was what kept them in the games. Now the offense is starting to pick up, but the pitchers have started walking more. The pitchers have started giving up more runs. We also have guys like Spencer Aragetti coming back. What kind of start will Christian Javier have when he comes back? I think he might have a little bit more success than Spencer Arrigetti. Remember last year he was a little inconsistent, but once Arrigetti hit his groove, he was good. And Professor NF says, “Ner’s no good.” Stressly for the six. Look, Ryan Presley’s definitely a possibility going on coming onto this team, but then again, what corresponding moves are you Astros fans willing to make? So, Ino de los Santos, I think is a great addition. Um, again, a a number that I really like that I that I was able to pick out, 38% whiff rate on his slider. I love to see that. Now, you know, I haven’t put him into the baseball savant. Let’s put him into the baseball savant calculator and see what baseball savant says. His offsp speedrun value is um 78, which is great. Um he, let’s see, hard hit percentage, it’s kind of red. Um his K percentage is just above his walk percentage. So look, this guy right now in 2025 is 20.1% on strikeouts, 9.5% walks, so that’s less than 10%. His expected RA is 3.77. Um, his current RA is 4.53. Okay. Um, so he has a change up, a slider, and a four seamer. Now, who knows? Maybe he comes here and the Astros see another pitch that he’s thrown or could throw and go from there. Um, but it looks like these are the only three pitches. He had a sinker um back in, you know, 2024 his sinker was there quite a bit, but his slider seems to be the pitch that he relies on the most. His his four seamer and his slider. um he only threw actually only threw one one sinker. So maybe there’s a pitch in there they can add to his repertoire to help him be even more successful than he’s already been. Um the bottom line is this is a welcome addition. We do have um Javier coming in, Garcia coming in. Yeah, Alexander will probably be out. Gordon will probably be out. I like those calls. Now they did send Blue Ball back. I like Blue Ball in several situations to come up and to help this team. Maybe if you don’t call him back up till September, that’s fine. But I think Blue Ball can help this team. Um, you know, we’re going to talk about this offense waking up and why it’s important because the Seattle Manners are surging after we hear about our friends at game time. But myself and Eric, we’ve been at this gosh, I’ve been at it since 2020. Eric started in 2019, but we didn’t get to YouTube till about 2022. And I don’t know if y’all know this, the origin story of that is we were able to line up and I believe Eric had a contact with Lance McCullers Jr. and he was at spring training and he was our first big interview that we had. We put it online and the rest is history. Um, Locked on Astros was the first MLB team in the locked on network to be awarded a um show for the YouTube um generation of Locked On. We were the first team in phase in phase two. So, let’s talk about before we talk about the offense, let’s talk about the division. Okay, the back in the glory days, if y’all remember, I used to have a mic in front of my face and I would do podcast where I had this big round circle right there. And you know, anyways, um it was it was it was not great. Okay, I’m just I’m just going to admit it. It was not great. Um, so let’s let’s look at the standings because they they can’t be ignored. And um, I honestly thought it would be us and the Mariners the whole year. Um, I didn’t think I mean the Rangers are quite a ways behind. Um, they are well I say quite a ways, they are about five spots back, but now the Seattle Mariners are a game and a half behind the Astros. They are getting ever so close. Right now they have won four in a They’ve won seven of their last three. Now, the Astros have won four of their last six. That’s not they’re they’re four- six in their last 10. Um the Mariners are seven and three. Now, the offense waking up is a good thing. And again, getting this new left-handed pitcher, De Los Santos, I think will help that. But what has to happen is a continued upward trend of your hitters. And Jeremy Pñena coming back off the IIL has been huge. Carlos Koreah coming to Houston has been huge. He has been hitting at almost a 500 clip and you need that to keep going because the Astros have got to have the bats in the lineup doing the damage. I mean, right now, Altuve, Kareah, Diaz, Pñena, um, Sanchez, you have Urias, you have Christian Walker who’s been hitting better. You have all these guys in the lineup doing damage. And look, despite that loss, I know it was a tough, frustrating loss for the Astros, but there were plenty of opportunities for them to get those runs. They just didn’t do enough. Again, we talked about it last night. They were four for 13 with runners in scoring position. You had a couple doubles. You had a home run. Um you had Alt and Keratini both had three bases total. Um Koreah had five bases total. So they’re doing better in situational hitting situations. They’re moving the runners over, but it’s still not enough. And if the Mariners are going to continue surging, you have to immediately look at who we are playing next versus who they are playing next. Now the So let’s so let’s get into this. I think the key bats for this series in New York, Carlos Koreah, he was three for five in the leadoff spot. I if I’m if I’m Jopatada, I might return him to that spot. um Jesus Sanchez, Jose Altoube, Christian Walker, and I think Yiner Diaz. Now, I think if you pick on th pick those guys out, and if those guys are doing their job, then it puts less pressure on Keratini. It puts less pressure on Cam Smith. It puts a lot less pressure on Dubon because you’re not really depending on Dubon, although he’s not terrible this year. 264 at the 713 OPS. He’s not your power guy. He’s not your RBI guy. But if Dubon’s in the game and he can get on base and then you can flip the lineup to Koreah in the leadoff spot, you can create opportunities um for the Astros to succeed. So the Houston Astros have to have those guys. And I want to hit on this again before we move on from the offensive segment. Um why do you say not Yiner? Yiner Diaz has been hitting a lot better lately. Um, and you absolutely need Yiner Diaz to be successful because he’s going to be your starting catcher in most games. And if he’s your starting catcher, you better hope that he goes out there and he absolutely does a great job. Okay, his last, get this, his last 30 games, 286. His last 15 games 352. His last seven games 321. His slugging percentage has gone from 509 to 607. So his I mean recently he’s been doing a lot better. Okay, so you definitely need that. The home run, the four hits in the series versus the Marlins. Now let’s look at Cam Smith. Okay, what has Cam Smith been doing lately? Cam Smith 197, 145, and 185 the last seven games. He still is not hitting great. His slugging percentage is not great. His on base percentage is not great. He is a kid that needs to get going. But if you have Carlos Koreah who in his last seven games um well oh wow one at bat in his um his last 15 games hitting 313 his last 30 games 282. So there you go. Carlos Koreah has actually been doing a great job. Yes. You know what? Um Deos Santos is a right-hander and you are correct about that. I think I kept saying he was a left-hander. He’s a righty. I apologize. Um, and I saw that earlier and I was going to make the correction and you know what? Um, it slipped in my mind, but thank you so much for correcting me, Ars. I really appreciate you. Thank y’all for not being all judgy tonight. That’s awesome. Now, let’s look at Jose Altuve. What have they been doing lately? Um, 333 293 33. I I mean, the guy’s got a slugging percentage of 533 in his last seven games. So, why why am I talking about this? Well, because you got the Seattle Mariners. The Seattle Mariners are on your heels. They are nipping at your heels. They are the annoying cousin that came to the party that you’re like, “Who invited him?” We definitely didn’t invite the the Mariners to the party, but they have the Rays, and then they have I’m sorry. Whoa, where am I at? Okay, they have the Rays, they have a day off, then they have Baltimore, then the Mets, then the Phillies. So, you hope that they hit a snag before the Mets and the Phillies. You hope maybe the Rays can take two of three from them. Baltimore’s been terrible this year, so you hope that isn’t good for the Mariners. Um, but then after that, they have the Athletics, they have the Padres’s, and they have the Guardians. So, they have a semie, but at the end of the day, the Astros can’t worry about who the Mariners are facing. They’ve got to worry about who they’ve got in our next several games. the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Orioles. Okay, good deal. Here’s the thing. I don’t Here’s a problem I don’t have outside of the White Socks having our number this year. The Yankees, they’re a little down. Okay, I think we can we can handle the Yankees. Baltimore, they’re not great. The Astros should be able to take care of business. Detroit, we’ve had their numbers so far this year. Then it’s back to Baltimore. And then you have Colorado and the Anaheim Angels. Now, I’m sorry, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. How crazy is that? So, I still can’t get over that. Um, they are not LA. They are Anaheim. But anyways, um, the Astros do have an easier schedule, but they still have to perform. They still have to get guys on base. They still have to score runs, and obviously those pitchers have to throw zeros up on that scoreboard. So, we’re going to talk about our appointment with the Yankees and see what they’ve been up to lately because um a a fan favorite to boo as an Astros fan, Aaron Judge, I believe, is back. So, before that, let’s hear let’s hear from our friends at Prize Pick. Hey everybody, thank you for tuning in. Locked on Astros. Prize Pix is our proud sponsor today. He sends his greetings. And what’s up, Eric? I look, I know he’s enjoying that new house. I don’t know if y’all noticed the last time he was on, bro’s got a stacked background. Like, he gives me a run for my money. He makes me want to change it and add new things because he’s got cool things. What’s neat is it’s not new. He just now he’s got this grandiose place um to put his stuff up. So, Eric, I’m so happy for you, man. That is awesome. Now, um, so here’s the deal. The Houston Astros play the New York Yankees. Now, the New York Yankees had gone on quite a stretch without Aaron Judge, but it appears I believe he’s coming back. Um, and the Astros like, “Dang it, can Aaron Judge stay out one more game, please?” because, you know, the dude’s on an absolute career of a tear um before he went down with an injury. But um the Yankees come into this. Let’s let’s look at their record because I want to see what they’ve been doing. Despite their sliding in the standings a bit, they’re still 61 and 54. They’re still a very good team. um even though they haven’t been playing well. They went to Texas and just got murdered by the Rangers. They are in third place in the East. Um but let’s let’s look at their last few games and what they’ve done here in August. Um wow, they they lost six in a row. I believe they actually won the last game in Texas. They did not get swept. Okay. Um they got swept by the Marlins. They they lost two of three to the Rangers. You go back before that. They lost the series to Philadelphia. They won the series in Tampa. They split the series. No, they lost the series to Toronto. And they won the series to Atlanta. So, since the All-Star break, they haven’t been great. They’ve been about 500. Um, but this is a team that’s going to send um Sli Slitler to the mound with a 4.58 RA. Hunter Brown goes out there. We need downtown Hunter Brown. We need Diesel himself. And then Saturday, what’s cool is we have Hill um I believe it’s Lewis Hill versus um Frober Valdez. From Valdez 11 and five, we’re looking for him to have a bounceback start this time. That would be huge. Um would love to see that. And you know, this Saturday, y’all can catch me if Look, if y’all want to hang out with me, I’ll be at Tom’s Watch Bar from 12 to 3 downtown Houston. um hanging out with Willhouse Media Company. We’d love to have you stop by. What’s cool about Tom’s Watch Bar. It’s an official Astro Social Club um venue. So, it’s an official watch party. I’ll be there. I’ll do like a live show for my for my media company. We’d love to have you guys come hang out with us. It’s an off day for us for, you know, for for the Locked on Astros crew. We’d love to have you come hang out 12 to 3 on Saturday. Um Apple TV game tomorrow night. Luke, thank you for that. Someone mentioned that last night and we we failed to mention that. And again, let me say this. Thank you for correcting me. I don’t know why I thought Mr. De Los Santos was a left-hander. I think when I looked at the picture, I don’t know, maybe I looked at the picture and in my mind I reversed it. But I made sure I checked it out, but then when when I saw the stat sheet today, I was like, “Okay, I need to correct that.” And I kept I kept getting stuck on a lefthander. maybe because deep down I wanted another left-hander even though we have more left-handers than we’ve ever had um in this lineup. So, you really hope that he comes out and he flexes. Want to drop that whip a little bit, but he’s not having too bad of a season so far. So, our appointment with the Yankees is important. It’s important to win. Why? Because again, the Mariners are on the Astros heels. And for the third game versus the Yankees, um, we have a pitching matchup. We have Max Freed versus someone that’s to be determined. I don’t know who they’re going to bring up for that. I don’t know who’s going to start. Is that a Christian Javier start? Possibly. I guess we will have to see. Um, when are the Wheelhouse hats coming out? Good question. So, I have some hats that I have not put into production yet. Um, now if if you’re talking about my my other venture, you’re going to have to wait until that show tonight, 10:15, so I can talk about that officially. I don’t want to do that here. Um, I have a hat design that I’m that I’m dropping to a local venue um to see if they will be willing to make it for me, but I’ll announce that. You’ll see on my socials when that happens. So, um, we’ll deal with those things later, or you can reach out to me, you can DM me or whatever if you have any questions about that stuff. Um, so the Astros have got to go to New York and take care of business. Um, again, situational hitting. Uh, starting pitchers have got to go the distance. You’ve got Hunter Brown, you’ve got Frober Valdez. These are two games you should have. These are these are two games that the Astros I think and obviously with 47 games left not there’s not a must-win situation. But if you’re going to continue to do what you’ve done all year long, well since you took the lead in the West and to keep pace in front of the Mariners, you’ve got to keep momentum on your side. So look, if you can grow this lead to three and a half games, you win. You win two of three and you can grow this lead three and a half games. That’s huge. Coming home thing is after you play in the Bronx, you got to come home and play the Red Sox who have had your number. I think they’re what, five-0 the last five games against the Astros. So, you’ve got to take all these things into consideration. And Jesus Sanchez shows up. Carlos Koreah shows up. Imagine the booze when Carlos Koreah steps up to the plate Friday night. I’m going to love to hear it. Love to hear it because they are going to be hating on him. Um, y’all are still talking about Chaz the banana pudding. Wow. Um, that’s brutal. Um, so I want to thank y’all for stopping by and tuning in. Um, and yes, Josh her can finally get some action. Hopefully, um, this guy can continue to just mow down opponents. Look, the back end of our bullpen is excellent. Okay. And I think what we have here is the makings of a really fun end of the season. It’s going to be exciting. It’s going to be electric. Now, if you look at what teams right now would make the playoffs, if the playoffs end, if if the season ended today, these would be the matchups right now. Okay. The Astros a game and a half in front of the Mariners. The Astros would get the third seed would play Seattle, the six seed. The Red Sox and the Yankees would play. The Blue Jays would have the one seed. The Tigers would have the two seed. Then if the winner of the Astros Mariners would play the Tigers, the winners of the Red Sox Yankees would play the Blue Jays. That’s insane to think about not two but possibly three if things change. If the Rangers move up and somehow knock the Yankees out to have three AO teams in the playoffs would be absolutely brutal. Then on the National League side, even though we’re an American League team, the Padres’s and Mets would play round one in the wild card. The Phillies and Cubs would play round um in their wild card. Then you would have the one seed, the Brewers, and the two seed the um the Dodgers. It seems like an interesting playoff scenario. So, we’re not determining playoff um seedings right now, but this is just if the postseason started today, this is what would happen. The Astros and Mariners would square off. That’d be a pretty exciting series. I really hope that the Houston Astros continue to move in the right direction to get it together. I think Jesus Sanchez is a big part of that. I think our pitchers coming back is another big part of that. I think Carlos Kareah is gonna have this playoff tonight. Thank you’all for tuning in. I appreciate conversation during Sorry I couldn’t get to everybody’s comments and put them up on the screen. But if you don’t have Apple TV, find someone who does, hang out, check it out. And hey, come see me Saturday 12:00 to 3. I’ll be at Tom’s Watch Bar. Would love to meet you. Would love you to hang out. Maybe you stop by, say hi, have a quick drink. We would love to hang out. So for myself, from Eric the man Heisman, and everybody here at Locked on Astros, remember we’re your team every day. Go beat the Yankees, Astros.

  1. Brett, I think that the Astros are going to win the division going head up against the Rangers and the Mariners. The Astros need to be in position to take care of their business at that time! That means that the Astros have to get their injured players back that they expect to have playing. They all need to be gelling together as a team, so the Astros can go out and win the division!

  2. I believe The Mariners will win the west this year. I hope not. But they look very strong. Hitting and way better pitching. As of now. I thought Arrighetti would be like this. He’s never really been really good. Yes a couple of good starts. But. Javier, I’m optimistic about.

  3. Mariners are not really "SURGING" as much as the Astros have been 2-8 ……… Astros had them down and let them back up because….. "WELL, YORDAN WILL BE BACK SOON!!"

  4. I agree that the Astros need to get their key injured players back real soon if they have a chance to win the division or even a wildcard place. At this point the Astros need to play with a real sense of urgency.
