Does Anyone Want to Try to Defend This?

  1. Brother I don’t think anyone here will tell you they’re glad our owners are cheap

  2. I mean i can try, everyone else in the division is close by and the top percentage spender in the division is only 42% even the brewers are only 40%. Should we spend more? Yes of course. Is everyone else in the division cheap as well? Also yes!

  3. Keep in mind these “revenue” numbers don’t include any profits or revenues from the real estate/hotel/events they also have all around wrigleyville.

None of these revenue numbers are accurate. All of these teams are making a lot more.

Try and remember that when some of you defend salary caps.

  4. We all know Ricketts is just breaking even. I feel bad for the 25 owners above the Cubs, I can only imagine how much cash they’re bleeding

  5. Having 2 teams in Chicago makes it a small market. If there was a way to combine both teams into one powerhouse team , just think of the possibilities.

  6. They’re a small market team and the Rickets are barely breaking even /s

  7. You do realize that they can’t sign any big names if they’re already capped out right? Do you want Tucker or some other big time free agent? Or several? This is how you prepare.

Lots of other guys to think about becoming free agents too. If you want to keep them you have to be ready.

  8. How dare you they are breaking even! They’re collecting change left under the seats after the games just to make it! The Ricketts can’t even send the Ricketts children to private schools in Switzerland!

  9. 4 position players make over 15 a year so that’s keep it down. Only Taillon for pitchers. So it looks like they pay their “top” guys big money kind of and the rest are on cheap deals or rookie deals. They are benefitting from people having good years all at the same time. They will have to pay some soon(PCA). I think they are better then they planned to be and maybe if Steele doesn’t get hurt so early maybe they would have taken more risk but next year should be a big spending year.

  10. Keep in mind that all these revenue numbers were basically pulled out of a hat—Forbes is barely a reputable organization these days. And, while it might not make a massive difference, none of the payroll numbers include other baseball expenses (player development, scouting, etc) which are not constant for each team.

  11. It’s not about how much you spend. It’s about having quality, consistent players.

  12. It’s their money. They can do what they want with it, and all of the bitching in the world isn’t going to change it.

  13. I’m not defending anything, but this is missing a lot of information. This is just annual revenue and player payroll. I’d imagine that a large portion of that revenue is used to pay off debt. And then, obviously, there are lots of other expenses. If it was profit and payroll, that’d be much different.

  14. I don’t want to defend Jed, but the brewers are only slightly better than us % wise, and they’re in my nightmares

  15. The owners probably get together at a party and decide who gets to win the World Series each year.
