🔴LIVE 🔴Houston Astros VS New York Yankees/August 08/ Baseball Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25

with a one coming at you. It’s the Houston Astros taking on the New York Yankees. And now, first pitch coming your way next. New York. So, just about set now. And on the hill in this one, Carlos Rodon. Yeah. Yeah, and as Whip tells you, he’s been pretty effective this year on the mound. I mean, opposing hitters having a hard time getting on base and then being able to really distract him and do damage in terms of getting around the base path. So, taking the mound, this is a guy you want out there if you’re his teammate. And I expect him to be good in this one. All right, ready to get underway. And here comes Carlos Kareah. That one finds the zone and we’re underway. Line drive and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s got a leadoff double. Everything came together for him. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Jesus Sanchez up next for the Astros. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one [Music] right through there for a strike. battling here as he fouls it away. No outs. Runner on second. Swings through that and it’s a strike out. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout. And there’s one away. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. Swing and a miss. Oh, and he lost the handle on that one. Altuve has a lot of history with the Astros. In fact, he’s played so many seasons in Houston that he’s the only player to be named an all-star in both leagues while playing for the same team. You know, Boo Alu goes back all the way to those Astros days in the NL Central before they move to the AL West. That one ripped but foul. Korea the runner at second with one away. That one ripped. That’s back there. Drops for a hit. He couldn’t run it down. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. just came off the bat really well into center field and he clearly put a nice swing on it and anytime you can get one to drop in out there, you know, you stung it pretty good because it seems like center fielders these days to a man. These guys can run down just about everything hit their way. And now it’s Christian Walker. Not close with that one. Ball one. Second and third, one away. [Applause] Hard hit right side and he takes it himself for the out. Now we check out the Astros lineup. a guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus, Victor Keratini. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Victor Keratini up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. Swinging a miss and a count even a one. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And now two and one. Two balls, one strike. Here comes the pitch and that drops in for a strike. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Breaking ball and that got him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Yer Diaz up next for the Astros. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. So, they’re all loaded up with two outs. Got him. Huge strike out there. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the hill in this one, Spencer Eric Geti. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that erra will have dropped over time. bounce to Keratini. Tosses to first. One up, one down. As we take a look now at the New York Yankees lineup, an offense that knows how to mash, Chris. Lots of power throughout the lineup. They’re leading the league in homers right now. Yeah. And I think when you’re facing a team like this, pitchers coming in, they see the stats, they end up trying to nibble, trying to work on the edges, trying to expand the zone. And so I think the key if these hitters can stay within themselves, obviously they have the ability to hit the ball a long way and score runs quickly. So we’ll see how it goes in this one. Ben Rice in the box here lets that one go for a ball. It affects the game in so many ways, right? Your ability to come back is usually tied to power. If you can deliver a huge hit with one swing of the bat, it really changes your capability when you fall behind. That one finds the zone and the count is even. Two and two. Next offering misses down and away. Three ball strike. outside and that is ball four. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what, he earned that wall. And now big number 99, Aaron Judge. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average. Judge working on a massive campaign right now. Putting up some big home run numbers. Rice at first, one gone. And ball one to judge. Well, we’ve seen him flex some impressive power this season and there’s still a lot of time to go. If he can keep up this pace he’s on, we could be in for something really special. [Applause] and a one-two swings through it and that’s a strike out. Well, often times that’s the pitch he’s trying to set up, the curveball. He’ll lean on it pretty heavily. So, you got to be expecting it, look for it, and sell out so you don’t miss it when you get it. Here comes Cody Bellinger. Another solid power season. Just missed. This to center field. High bounce over the fence for an automatic double. Off the bat, I thought they were going to score their first run of the game, and that feels like a tough break, but look at the bright side. Really good contact at the plate. And now they’re working with not just one, but two runners in scoring position. So, they’d love another base hit right here. Jazz Chisum Jr. Now, that missed by a lot. Ball one. Second and third, two down. Swinging a foul out of play and a count. One and two. Two on, two outs. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. He’s going to fall for a hit. The run scores from second. Now the tag at second and he’s out trying for two. They limit the damage here. So they get a couple of runs on two hits. No errors and no one left on. Second inning coming up in the Bronx. It’s the Yankees two and the Astros nothing. Back in the Bronx, top of the second. So now the Astros designated hitter Taylor Treml. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate. Try to hit the ball over the shorts stop’s head. Rodone back to work. Ball one there. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. That’s a little bit low. Clyde Washington doing the umpiring behind the dish in this one. Sometimes considered a bit of a pitcher umpire singing. He likes the low ball, which traditionally favors pitching, but you know, hitters today are pretty good at dropping their barrel down. So, we’ll see how it goes in this one. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. Rodon ready. Here comes keeps the bat going with a foul ball. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Outside and that’s ball three. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Go. A breaking ball in that 32 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. And stepping in for the Astros. Cam Smith. That’s the ball. Squirts away a little bit. And the one. And that’s a little bit high. I think he wanted that call on the upper part of the zone, but just didn’t get it. Now he’s just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed. So he can adjust his sights just a little bit. Nobody out. Runner at first. And ball four, two aboard. Bell just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging it something out of the zone. First and second, no outs. Here’s the center fielder, Mauricio Dubong. First and second, no outs here in the top of the second. Both one ball, one strike. Swing and a miss and he got him to chase. This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. Outside low and the count now even up. way to lay off that pitch down [Applause] and it remains two and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. First and second here, no outs. [Applause] This one in the dirt. Well done behind the dish. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. And I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location. And those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know, it happens. Now Koreah up to hit. Lent off this game with a double. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Two on, one out. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And one and one. And that’s a pitch early in this game. He needs called for a strike. Struggling with command issues. He’s got to get a little help from the umpire. And now two balls in a strike. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Still two and two after the foul ball. Rodon fires, stays alive. That’s off the inside corner and it’s a full count. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Three balls, two strikes to count. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, he froze him with the change up right there. And I think he was so geared up for fast ball. Once he recognized that it was off speed, he just wasn’t able to make an adjustment. So a really good strike out and pitcher just won the battle. There’s a swing and a drive going back and that one is out of here. He’ll circle the bases and they grab the lead. It’s 3-2. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat, boo. Aggressive and it paid off. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Jose Altuve up to hit here. Doubled in his first AB swings through that one for strike one. No, one strike. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering is in for a strike. Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. It’s now a 32 ball game. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. And stepping in for the Yankees, Jason Dominguez. and Dominguez. [Applause] Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. And that is out of play. And that’s in there at the knees for a strife. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Dubong sizes this one up, puts it away for the out. Batting seven, the short stop. Anthony Vulpi now at the plate. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. That one catches the zone. It’s 0 and one. One out. Base is empty. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it [Music] and we’re level. It’s 33. He just sent this stadium into a frenzy. They’re going nuts. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. So it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Ryan McMahon steps to the plate. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Applause] One out, base is empty and a run in. Bottom half of inning number two. Pitch misses and the count is 2 and 0. Eric Getty maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they That one is absolutely belted. going. They do it again. Back-to- back homers and they jump ahead in the second. It’s 4-3. Backto back jacks. And this club is fired up right now, boo. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup beating off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. So, one out, nobody on. Here’s the catcher, Austin Wells. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? No, partner. Every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. Sanchez snags it for the second out. Now batting center. So the batting order turns over. Now it’s Trent Gisham to the plate. Grounded out his first time up. Taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Swag on belted. That’s back. That one is gone. A massive home run. their third home run of the inning. It’s 53. [Applause] Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball, squared it up and the back spin carried it out of here. So, two down and up next for New York, Ben Rice. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Outside. Clearly, he hasn’t had it in this game. And looks like sooner than later, they’re going to have to go to the bullpen. And now two and two. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. That’s to third. Kareah over to first and that is that. They explode with three solo homers in the inning. We play two full. It’s the Yankees five and the Astros three. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top half of the third inning. And here now is the Astros cleanup hitter, Christian Walker. Walker measures 6 feet even. batting in the cleanup spot. He joined the team as a free agent. Well, these Astros do a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. Vic Keratini at the plate. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. That’s in there. 0 and one. No ball. One strike. He swings and fouls one off. One down. Base is empty. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. and ball one. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the bat. Lifted in the air down the left side. Dominguez nabs it and there’s two away. just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. That one ripped right center field and it one hops the wall and he’s got a double. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Just a great approach. Looked like that was exactly what he wanted to do with that pitch. And right off the bat, he knew he was taking that wide turn at first to head for second. So, runner at second, two down. Here’s Taylor Treml. The walk and a run scored his first time. Swang and a miss. Going to one York outside with a breaking ball. Rudder at second. Two down. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Swing and a miss and it’s one and two. [Applause] Cut on and miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. So the Astros leave one. They’re still down 53. [Applause] Back at Yankee Stadium, set for the bottom of the third. In now is the Yankees DH Aaron Judge. There’s a high chopper. Kareah over to first. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Up next for the Yankees, right fielder. One down. Here comes Cody Bellinger. Bellinger. Bellinger is a brilliant defender whether in the outfield where he won a gold glove in right center field or at first base. The footwork he attributes to playing soccer as a kid and Bellinger is a huge Premier League soccer fan. I think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game. He’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start. The O2 and a curve is down and in. Really good take especially with two strikes. Line drive and that’s a base hit to right. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now batting second base. Now it’s the second baseman, Jazz Chisum Jr. Now moved to first. There’s the strike. 0 and one. [Music] Swings through that one for strike two. Then he really sells the change up with that arm action. [Music] And that misses and it’s one and two. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there if you’re smart to look for something down in the zone but not too far. You don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt in the dirt. Tag save at second and good hustle to move up. That’s a wild pitch. He just hasn’t had it in this one. been fighting himself out there and that’s just another example of it. We’ll see if he can find it at all while he’s still out there. One out and a runner at second in the dirt. Hard hit left side over to first. Great pick. Good stretch there to make the play. It looks like someone added a little yoga to their daily routine if you ask me. Dominguez. And next for New York, Jason Dominguez. Way high. One and0. [Applause] And he hits a ground ball right side and foul ball. Here’s a 1-1 right through there for a strike. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. Still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. That one way inside. That’s third. Fair ball. Bellinger on his way home. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single and they lead by three. Comes through with the RBI. Just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tee where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. And stepping in for the Yankees, Anthony Vulpi. The shorts stop takes the ball. Two outs. Swings through that. One and one. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] Cut on and miss. Struck him out. That’s the third out. Inning over, but they pick up one run on the RBI single and they’ve doubled up. Now it’s 63. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back in the Bronx as we go to the top of the fourth and stepping in for the Astros. Cam Smith in there at the knees for a strike. Singing four homers in 22 games at Old Yankee Stadium. What do you remember? Well, I remember my rookie year hitting two in one game. And you know, before that game in the clubhouse, there was a gentleman there who owned a suit company there in downtown Manhattan. and he said to me, “Hey kid, you hit a home run in the game tonight. Come over to the store tomorrow and I’ll give you a free suit.” No, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Dub in the box with one away as he takes ball one. So I went into the game, I happened to hit two when I walked into the store the next day and he looked at me said, “You’re trying to put me out of business, aren’t you?” And that was a great great experience that I had as a rookie playing against the Yankees playing in New York. So did Super Joe give you two suits? Super Joe hooked me up with two suits. Way inside gets out of the way. Yankees up by three. Handsful. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. Still able to get it there in time. He keeps his composure and they get the out. He had more time than he thought right there. Probably didn’t have to barehand it, but he made it look nice, that’s for sure. Here’s Carlos Kareah one for two. This is important. If he can go one, two, three here will be a very positive sign for him and for his team. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Go ball. She’s straight. Hard ground ball base knock. And that extends the inning. And next to hit for Houston, Jesus Sanchez. He’s already homerred in this game. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Koreah off of first with two away. Liner and this could be trouble. And that’s going to get into the corner. coming home and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. Always exciting to see a play at the plate. Trying to score with two outs, but the tag just gets him in time and they cut down the run to end the inning. [Applause] Welcome back. and they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. Hunter Brown. Well, at this point in the ball game, we’re talking about middle innings and you need a little length out of this arm coming out of the bullpen. We’ll see just how many outs he’s able to give his skipper. And it finds its way through for a hit. Had a good start to the inning. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. Well, there’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. And here is Austin Wells. That’s in there and it’s 0 and one. You know, these Yankees really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. You just can’t average two runs per inning without a complete team effort from the lineup. Everyone’s been doing their job, setting up the next guy, and taking care of their own business at the plate. Andy Otu spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Let’s go on the ground. Left side. Six. Four. He’s out. Three. And they turn the double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Gome. Now here’s Trent Gisham. He’s already homerred here in this one. That misses the zone. And that’s ball one. No strike. Two down. Nobody on. And another ball. Hot shot to third. Kareah over to first. That takes care of Gisham and that ends the inning. Yanks held in check as they’re unable to add to their 6-3 lead. Back now in the Bronx, all set for the start of the inning. And stepping in for the Astros, Jose Altuve. Altuve always seems to be setting records or reaching milestones. Boo. In 2023, he became the fastest player to reach 2,000 career hits, 200 home runs, and 200 stolen bases in MLB history. Little bit low activity in the bullpen for the Yankees. Will Warren up and loosening in the pen. Hedrickk, a left-hander, also throwing [Music] the 1-1. And that’s downed away. Two and one the count now. He hasn’t seen a fast ball yet, but you’ve got to be ready to hit one because you doubt the pitcher wants this to go to a 3-1 count. That one ripped and it’s off the wall but foul. [Applause] Ripped to short. Vulpy throws it to first in time and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. Batting the first base, Christian Walker. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. He’s grounded out a couple of times. One of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman. Next offering is fouled back. Slice to right. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there are two outs. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. First baseman are involved in just about every single play. So, when you have somebody so solid over there, uh, you can breathe a little easier. Keratini lays off down low as he digs in for the third time. Nope. Off. The other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him, it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times. And he just handles them so well. So he really makes the entire infield better with his glove. Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. You’re not just talking about the ability to pick Chris. One of the things about him, the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. And down on strikes and he’s up to eight strikeouts in this one. Nothing doing there for Houston. And they’re still doubled up. It’s six to three. Back here in New York, ready to go for the last half of the inning. And here’s the first baseman, Ben Rice. Ben Rice Brown back to work. For you growing up in New York City, I mean, you’re a big sports fan. Tell me about your experience with the Yankees growing up. I really went to Shay Stadium. And there’s a fly ball deep right field up against the wall and brings it in. He was all over that fast ball right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way back. Aaron Judge at the plate. Bull for two in this one. And that one a little below the knees. And that’s ball one. And another ball. Highf fly ball near the pole. That one is fouled. Oh, good solid contact right there. Just a bit out in front of that fast ball. Got to try to stay on that back side just a little bit longer and see if you can do some damage. Shoot. Base is empty. One away. Last half of inning number five. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Pulled the string on the change up way out in front of that inside pitch there. And just exactly the opposite kind of approach that you want with two strikes. You want to let the ball travel. Make sure you recognize it. Try to shorten up so that you can at least put the ball in play. Clearly fooled, but I think even more so you question the two strike approach. Two out. Space is empty. Digging in. Cody Bellinger. popped up. Kareah drops into the glove and that is that. So, the Yanks go in order, but they still lead it 6-3. New arm out of the bullpen, Will Warren. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So, they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. Oh, boy. [Applause] And here’s the catcher, Yiner Diaz, known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Swings and misses. Went with the sweeper. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Yari de los Santos, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Hill also getting ready and healing the one. One and one. And there’s a ball. that catches the zone for a strike and it’s two and two. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. [Applause] The next offering misses ball three two strike gets a piece and stays alive. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Now batting. And next is the designated hitter Taylor Trel. A strike out and a walk. Get two. Get two. Drilled out towards left center field. Way back there. Gone straight into the visitors bullpen. So he goes the opposite way with that one. It’s 65. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you could say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that. And probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. That one down the line and that’s a fair ball around first. Digging for two. Here comes the throw and now the tying run is into scoring position. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. had a big swing and a miss. Oh, and one with the go ahead run at the plate. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. man at second. Base hit into right center. Smith headed for the plate. He’ll score and they’ve tied it and it’s an RBI single. 66 gets it done in a big spot to get the run across. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Will Warren done for the afternoon and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching for the We’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Devin Williams and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Go ahead. Run on base. Carlos Koreah up next for the Astros. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. One strike. Dubong gets his lead at first. Nobody out. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. runner on the goal. Line drive and now runners at the corners. Nobody out. Four hits in a row. And they’re really swinging it here. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. So runners at the corners, nobody out. Jesus Sanchez will hit. Runner takes off. Swig and a miss. Throw to second. Tag out at second. [Applause] Check swing called strike. Oh, one ball two straight line drive. Nice swing and good solid contact. That ball was smoke, but needed a little more lift to get into the outfield gap. Maybe a little more backspin. And now Jose Altuve. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. Basketball for a strike. If he doesn’t get a knock right here, that pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while. You might not see another pitch like that from a top level guy like this. Clips the corner and it’s 0 and two. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. And that one popped in the air left field Dominguez. And that’s the third out. So they get three and draw even. We go to the bottom half of inning number six. And the 567 slots do up. And we’re all even at six apiece. Bottom of the sixth inning. And now Jazz Chisum Jr. Though he came out clutch earlier in this ball game and really just needs to take the same approach. Think hard right back up the middle. Swaying at a ball popped up. Kareah is there. Hauls it in for the out. And there’s one down. Now batting left fielder Jason Doming. Tied at six. Jason Dominguez getting ready to hit. Brown 26 years old and he was a fifthround pick back in 2019. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Brian King up and throwing. Or a hard throwing right-hander up as well. Bottom of the zone and a called strike. All tied up here in the bottom of the six. That one finds the zone and the count is one and two. Goes down swinging for the strike out. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Stepping in Anthony Vulpi. And first offering is fouled off. Two outs. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That’s back there. Say goodbye to that one. [Applause] Another homer. His second home run of the game. It’s 76. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop and they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one, Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. [Applause] There’s Ryan McMahon now. Robert to right field. Way back. Gone. They go back to back. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And they add to the lead. It’s 86. That’s their fifth homer of the game. Man, they’re all getting into the action. It’s starting to feel like a home run derby up here. Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. Base is empty with two away. Here’s the Yankees catcher now, Austin Wells. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And that’s downstairs and outside. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. And that’s downstairs. And it’s three and 0. [Applause] Strike one. Three and one. Swing and a popup. Keratini. He’s got it. And that’ll end the inning. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 86. Back after this on the show. Now pitching for the Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mary de los Santos. He last pitched two days ago. So, here’s the Astros cleanup hitter, Christian Walker. 0 for three in this one. York upstairs. That one ripped left field back there. And it’s gone. He’ll touch them all. It’s 8-7. Just relentless. This team will not quit. [Applause] Really great job of anticipation there. He knows he throws the sinker. That one down in the zone. You’re trying to beat it to the spot it’s getting to. Well, he won. Victor Keratini up next for the Astros. check, swing, called strike. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Ripped but a curls foul. [Applause] looking to get the tying run on base. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two and he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes now. The catcher up to hit. Niner Diaz. turned on, but that’s fouled down the third baseline. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. puts it in the air out towards left center. Dominguez on the move to the alley. He’s got it. Two down. Those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Gary De Los Santos done for the day. And he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now, pitching Brent Hedrick will take over here. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Hedrick, Taylor up next for the Astros. [Applause] First pitch misses. One ball. No strike. Just missed. Holding on to a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. And another ball. Cam Smith in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Pitch is in for a strike. And now three and one. Swing and a highf fly ball deep left field. Yeah, a foul ball. Good job to fight that one off and the tying run is on base. Second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the plate. A game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. We’re under at first with two away. Cam Smith the next to hit. Typically the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front. Make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up. But with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. Two outs. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. [Applause] 0 and2 now. Fouls it back with two strikes. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Here’s the O2. High chopper to third. McMahon throws to first in time. Third out, but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. It’s now 87. You’re dialed into the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Valdez. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Valdez. So, back to the top of the order. So, the batter now will be Trent Gisham. Trent Gisham. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. just missed. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike and that misses off the outside edge. That one misses. So a lead off walk. You know, Boo, it’s been said these guys are savages in the box. You can see it right there with such tight plate discipline. Ben at first. Now the number two hitter Ben Rice. [Applause] Late swing fouled to the left. Gisham aboard here at first with nobody out. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Just kept it simple. Played pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there’s just no one there to knock it down. Here comes Aaron Judge 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Swing and a miss. And one ball. One strike. Fouled off down the right side. First and second, no outs here in the bottom of the seventh. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] fights it off. He’ll see another and a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. One away. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Here’s Cody Bellinger. And that one is inside. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. One out. Runners at first and second and a swinging to miss. Knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here. You’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there. Swinging at that pitch. That’s a no no. Back to the mound into the outfield base hit. Brown’s third headed for the plate. The throw is applied. He’s saved and they lead by two. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground ball. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Two on, one out. Jazz Chisum Jr. digs in now. That one finds the corner. That’s strike one. [Music] breaking ball misses down and away. Just missed. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. That misses and the count is three and one. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it in there at the knees. And that’ll load the bases. Oh, this is their chance to break it open. If they don’t end up winning this ball game, they’re going to look back at this opportunity right here and have some regret. Here’s the left fielder, Jason Dominguez. Golden opportunity right here. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. First pitch and he just misses. two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. And another ball. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. And downstairs, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. [Applause] And there’s the automatic three and one. Next offering is in for a strike. Three and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. The bases are full for the New York Yankees. But I think ultimately you want to tie him up. Get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel. Now this one gets through. One runs in. Two runs are in. Coming home. He’s in there. Three runs score and the lead is up to five. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. From Valdez won’t go any further and he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now pitching for Steven Ochre gets the call from the pen. Well, he’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season, averaging more than one per inning. Now, so up next, Anthony Vulpi. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. There’s a strike. Just missed. Runner at second here. One gone. up the middle. Oh, great grab on the dive. Nicely done for the out. Well, you can see right there he looks very comfortable going to the backhand. Nice diving stop. Gets up to complete the play. That’ll fire the team up for sure. Next man. And up next for New York, Ryan McMahon. Three for three with a pair of home runs and a single. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. [Music] right down to shoot. 0 and two. Hit hard. Base hit. Runner from third comes across and it’s an RBI single. Our score 13-7. Two outs, runner at first. And now the catcher comes up to hit. Austin Wells. Edge of the zone for a strike. 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. McMahon off of first with two away and a foul ball. He stays alive. Stays alive. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. But nine batters hit in the inning. Five come around to score. Eighth inning coming up. The Yankees lead this one 13-7. This one isn’t exactly close. Chris, let’s go off script for a moment. I’m game. Were we on script? Never. All right, Singi, we’ve been in all the press boxes. You got best press box food. Uh, I’d say press box food because of the ice cream. We have Philadelphia. Shout out to our guy Frank. Yes. Now, uh, New York for me is pretty good. Yankees. Yeah. Solid. Yeah. Now the third baseman, Carlos Koreah. As far as ballpark food, one of my favorite places is San Francisco. Garlic fries. Yo, garlic fries. And you got the lobster roll out there in the outfield if you want to make the walk all the way out there. It’s great though broadcasting a game with that zoo breath where you could just I mean absolutely levitate some people with your with your breath. What do we got? The crab fries in Philadelphia. Is that right? Yep. And then it’s been a long time for me. Boogs Barbecue at Oral Park. I knew you’d go there. That’s right. You know, anyway you can work in your name, huh? That’s right. Next offering is in for a strike. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. Gisham going back to the warning track. Makes the catch. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And that one is lifted in the air. Gisham sizing this one up. Calls it into Indiana. [Applause] back for more from the Bronx. Ready for the bottom of the eighth. And now the center fielder Trent Gisham. Ochert back to work. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Popped up to the left into foul ground at the wall and it’s out of play. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. Smith raging back towards the wall. Pulls it in on the warning track. Now batting. First baseman Ben Rice. Ben Rice will hit next. With this kind of lead, he can swing freely, try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do. That one drifts inside. up and in. And it’s two and 0. Base is empty, one away here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Foul ball. Scorched to center. No doubt about it. That is long gone. his 17th of the year. And they tack one on the board. It’s 14-7. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the booth. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spit on some other pitches in this at was very patient and it paid off. [Applause] [Applause] One down. It’s Aaron Judge now. 0 for four with three strikeouts. And he’s grounded out. Little bit low. And that is ball one. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. [Music] Right through there for a strike and Judge spoils that one out towards right center field. Smith and there’s two away. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Two down, base is empty. And up to the plate comes Cody Bellinger. Just missed. That one finds the zone and it’s one and one. And the slider just misses. Next offering is downstairs. [Applause] for tried another fast ball but missed the spot. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Chisum in the box now. No balls in a strike. just missed. One. Next pitch is outside. Bellinger. The runner at first with two gone. That just misses. Now three and one. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished a little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Applause] Struck him out looking. Another look at the long ball for the Yankees. Last chance coming up here for the Astros. Back in New York, here’s the second baseman, Jose Altuve. Hedrickk measures 6′ 6 in, 27 years old. They got him off of waiverss earlier this season. Movement in the bullpen. David Bednar getting loose out there for Aaron Boone. Hill getting loose as well. And the next pitch is way outside popped up. Chisum hauls it in for the outer Christian Walker. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Christian Walker. Fast ball for a strike and it’s a one. Show the ball really well today. That two seam fast ball has got good run on it. Excellent job of moving around the plate. The 1-1 is fouled off. The Yanks up big in this one here in the top of the ninth to the right side. And that’s just foul. Just off the outside part of the plate. That one misses. Full count. Three and two. [Music] Swings through it for the K. Now only one out remaining. Oh, that high forcing fast ball has become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off. They’re trying to stay back with two strikes, make sure that they can handle something off speed and just with good spin rate, good rotation through the zone, elevated a little bit, get a lot of swings and misses. And that’s a really nice job right there. A short stop takes a ball. One ball, one strike. on the ground. And this should do it to first, but it pulls him off the bag. [Applause] Yiner Diaz up next for the Astros. Diaz. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller. good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Yeah. And because he’s got the big arm, he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it. And that clips the inside corner. When you have a catcher that can throw like that, a pitcher doesn’t have to worry as much about the slide step. he can keep his mechanics intact and have a better opportunity of getting that hitter out with a swinging miss. [Applause] Hedrick is just one strike away. Highf fly ball out towards left field. That’s back there and that one is off the wall coming home. He will score. Dominguez fires it in quickly and they hold him at second. Well done. Drives in the run. Put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left. Didn’t quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence, but you’re never going to be disappointed with extra bases. Man in scoring position with two away. Next is the designated hitter, Taylor Treml. just missed. One and out. Two outs and one in scoring position. Fast is outside. Right side. And it goes just foul. [Music] Rip to third. Throw to first. Ball game. And the Yankees slug their way to a win in this one. These hitters came to the yard today thinking one thing, launch mode. Six home runs. Just an incredible offensive display today. Even by today’s standards, that is a huge total. 148 is the final for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
