[The Royals Rundown Podcast] Some of the #Royals core players are nearing extension territory.
Maikel Garcia.
Vinnie Pasquantino.
Kris Bubic.
Perhaps get ahead of the curve with Jac Caglianone?
Or is there another player deserving of a longer stay in Kansas City?
Who would you extend now???

Hard to rank the core of our team but I’d say Maikel, then Vinnie, then Bubic.
am i the only one who thinks vinnie hasnt truly earned an extension yet 17th wRC+ 16th in OPS and in most other stats hes around 16 and 17 among other 1B so by most stats hes a mediocre first baseman and needs to if he ever gets to that 13 and above range then i would love to see an extension but now not really unless its pretty cheap
I mean, yes to all. It’s the billionaire’s money, not mine.
I’d like to see Bubic or Cameron here long term but Bubic may be at his peak and would be valuable to trade with. Also Vinnie would be safer on a short term extension. Garcia? Keep. His. Ass. Here
Vinnie and Maikel to 6 year deals. Wait a year on Bubic and Cags.
Could possibly put together an incentives based deal for Jac, kinda like Julio’s deal, but does he want to do anything based on his current production? If I were him, I wouldn’t lock into a longer term deal just yet.
Vinnie, I mean, sure why not? The fan base loves him, he brings some extra benefits besides on field performance, pay him fair market value.
Maikel is absolutely one you want to lock up long term, just hope it’s not outrageously expensive. It probably will be.
If you extend Jac based on his current production, he’d be below the league minimum. Sure hope he picks it up at some point. I’d wait for him to better establish his value.
Maikel and Vinnie.
I think you let Vinnie and Bubic walk
Idk but shouts out to Jacob and Jeremy for making my favorite Royals podcast. Keep up the good news, friends. 😊
*whispers*
I think you trade Bubic.
I love Vinnie but think it would be malpractice to extend him until we know with more certainty who Jac Caglianone will be. Vinnie is under control through 2028, at which point Cags will just be turning 25. If Cags is who we hope he’ll be, there’s zero reason to extend Vinnie and that money should instead go toward locking up the all-star at the same position who’s three years younger. If Cags busts, then you can discuss a short extension with Vinnie, but I don’t think he’s a guy that you can give a contract through his age 35 season or anything like that.
Extend Maikel. Trade Bubic. Vinnie 🤷♂️
I think, right now, on the body of work, it should go Vinnie>Garcia>Bubic.
Do a 4-year deal with Vinnie, or maybe 3 with some team options for his first year or two of FA. Something like a $30M guarantee.
Probably much tougher to do a deal with Garcia right now bc he is much more likely to have a robust market waiting for him even if he doesn’t improve.
Every one of them. And they should all get a souvenir soda cup too and a parking pass.
2 words for anyone thinking a Vinnie extension makes a lot of sense: Eric Hosmer
1B don’t have a whole lot of value unless they hit like Vladdy or can also hit plus play D like Matt Olson. They are most likely to be subbed in by the proverbial “replacement player”. Look at how little the Mariners paid for Josh Naylor. the 17th best prospect in the org is what they gave up to get him. Sure, he’s a rental, but the industry just doesn’t view 1B as valuable. A similar player to Vinnie, Ryan Mountcastle, probably doesn’t get a QO at the end of this year because he’s able to be replaced by one of a number of prospects soon.
I suppose if you thought that Vinnie would get a lot better as a hitter and play better D, but that’s a big “if”.
the players who have recieved extensions early have proven themselves already at the MLB level and have a lot of upside. Jackson Chourio was a can’t-miss prospect, as was Julio Rodriguez. Both very young. Roman Anthony has only been in the league a couple of months and is already crushing it. Maybe Jac or Cameron fit that definition: I’m not a scout but either of those guys are risks.
Assuming we’re prioritizing resources:
Mike is a great candidate for a bridge contract.
Bubic is ideal trade bait for next year.
Jac, we can wait a good long time on.
Vinnie, I would not extend more than a couple of years, and only at a moderate AAV.
Rather than extending these guys still in arbitration, I’d rather put some money into what looks like a solid free agent class next year. Specifically: Kyle Tucker.
This was the season that we’ve all been waiting to see from Maikel, he’s always had the defense but the bat has really come around now too. I’d offer him an extension.
I’d offer Vinnie an extension too. He’s always been excellent with RISP and he really seems like the heart and soul of this team, they missed him so much when he was out at the end of last season. Plus he’s finally tapping into some more HR power this year.
Bubic scares me post injury. Maybe you offer him a short term deal to see if he can stay relatively healthy over the next 2-3 years. He has the stuff to be worthy of an extension though. He’d probably fetch a good price as a trade piece this offseason too.
Jac would be foolish to take an extension now. Get yourself into a groove, adjust to MLB pitching, try to get a monster deal in like 2 more years. As for the team offering him an extension, I’d want to see him hit above the Mendoza line for a full season first.
A, B and C….no need to even think about extending Jac, he’s a rookie. We have years left on his contract. If this was a contract year? Bye Felicia.
Bubic has been injured so much what you hope for there is next year he has a dominant first half and you can trade him for high value, the wheels are gonna completely fall off that at some point.
Extend Maikel yesterday. The man’s a DAWG
This team needs so many pieces; LF, CF, RF and 2nd at a minimum. I would trade both Garcia and Bubic this offseason. Garcia is a shortstop that has an above average bat, he will fetch a good return. Bubic is too injury prone. You can hold on to him until the trade deadline but if he gets hurt again the return won’t be as good.
I wouldn’t extend Pasquantino. He’s not eligible for arbitration until 2026 and he’s going to be 28 next year.
I wouldn’t extend Cags either. He hasn’t shown the ability to hit MLB pitching yet. There’s plenty of time for an extension.
A or C. I love them all though
