Brian Anderson tells MLB Network about Brewers are best team in MLB & best chance to make postseason

Well, it’s another edition of Step Up to the Mic, where we get to chat with the men and women that call games around the the league. Mashkard Ballpark Cam takes us to Milwaukee where the red hot Milwaukee Brewers welcome in the struggling New York Mets. Remember these two teams and their memorable postseason series last year right there at that yard, uh Mets and Brewers, game one of that series. And speaking of the Brewers, let’s welcome in Brian Anderson. He is uh joining us from his Millennium Falcon, which is That’s NBA 2K home. That’s right. That’s right. Uh if you play a lot of NBA 2K, and who doesn’t? BA is one of the voices of NBA 2K, also the voice, TV voice of the Milwaukee Brewers. And Brian, we appreciate the time. Uh what do you make of the Brewers and what they’ve done in 2025. How surprised are you? Oh man. Um it’s been awesome. What a ride here. you know, the the the team, you didn’t know what it was going to look like when it started. They they were counting on a lot of young guys that um you know, really haven’t proven themselves. I call them the land of the misfit toys. Um guys that have been DFAD, released, a lot of second chancers, third chancers. So, you never know how that’s going to work out. But I would say that there are great stories in and a ton of individual stories and kudos to you guys. You guys have done a great job covering the Brewers. Um, I I will say though, building the the formula from the bullpen from the back to the front, uh, is always going to be a success story if you do it right. And that is no different this year. So, to me, the guy who deserves probably the most credit, you know, among the players is Trevor McIll. Trevor McIll stepping up, locking down that ninth inning role. And this goes back a few years. Remember Josh her traded from the Astros. He was a starter. They developed him into a closer. hater and then hater to to Devin Williams. You could even back it up to Trevor Hoffman to John Axford. I mean, this has always been a theme with the Brewers to build their bullpen because once you build that and you can get those last three guys set up your leverage, guys, then you can pretty much start to formulate everything else. It it allows you to come back in games uh when you’re down. It obviously allows you to win games when you’re up. So, kudos to everybody involved who put that bullpen together. starts with McGill. Uh is a future closer. Kanig, Jared Kanig’s been amazing. So that’s really the secret sauce. All these other guys are getting a lot of publicity. Uh and they deserve it. But that’s really where it starts for me. And does it start at the top as well with Pat Murphy? He’s fascinating us BA. We had him on the show. He doesn’t like something he’s going to let you know. He holds his players accountable. But there is a buyin there in Milwaukee. You’re there all the time. What do you see? Yeah, he takes um he definitely takes the spotlight that doesn’t need to be directed elsewhere. So, and that’s a good thing. So, he’s more than willing to pull a pancake out of his pocket. you know, he’s more than willing to be funny and entertaining and uh viral worthy, but also he’s very good at uh keeping players accountable, keeping players um keeping players like in the lane in the in between the lines and and this will be a big series coming up. The Brewers are getting a ton of publicity. Uh you guys have been all over them all year, but from a national perspective elsewhere, there’s stories being written. individual players are getting a ton of profiles and features. Great for them. Very happy for all of that. But this is where Murf really shines in my opinion because it’s he’s great with the star players and then he’s great with the 25 26 men on the roster and he allows those guys and makes those guys feel special every day. And this is really where I think the the change has been where those those players now feel like they are instantly contributing. So, you go on a road trip, you lose Jackson Cheerio, the Brewers went 6-0 previous road trip. Uh they lost South Freelick. Uh they went 5- one and swept the Dodgers. So, they’re missing major pieces and yet they’re still maintaining that because I think everybody in that clubhouse feels like I’m here to contribute. And I think Murf and his coaching staff really spread that down throughout the organization and really throughout the It’s not just the big league club either. It’s all those on the 40man. It’s funny you say that, BA. I I I think there’s something different with the Brewers cuz I think when you look at them on paper, they have three starters that can shove in a postseason series and you talk about the bullpen and then sprinkle in one or two superstar bats and everybody knowing their role. It could get potentially weird in October for the Brewers. They could scare some people and they’re having guys step up like you said, the Isaac Collins’s of the world. But I need you to focus on Andrew Vaughn. This guy was a third overall pick not too long ago. Maybe tries to do too much for the White Socks. You make the Aaron Savali deal. He comes over. Reese is down and he has been a godsend. He has. That’s um that’s a monumental move there. Um you know the the Brewers took a little heat for not going out uh trade deadline and making uh that splash deal. I didn’t really feel like there was a splash deal to be made with the Brewers to be honest, but man, you got to give Matt Arnold a lot of credit. Yeah. Uh, and and the guy who deserves a lot of credit, a guy you know well, Dro, is Jason Lane. And Jason Lane has known Andrew Vaughn since Andrew was 9 years old. So Jason and Andrew Vaughn’s father go way back. They’re from the same area, Northern California. A young Andrew Vaughn used to go hit Jason Lane’s batting cage in his home, you know, in his facility there when he was playing in the big league. So, they’ve had this long relationship. And Jason Lane was the one who really pushed the idea that Andrew Vaughn is still a dude. He’s always had the hit tool. He was brutal with the White Socks. He would admit that he struggled. He’s wrapped up in the axle. That team is struggling. It’s a bad scene there. They’ll they’ll pull out of it eventually. They’ve got good people now, but it didn’t look like Vaughn was going to be a part of it. He’s in the minor leagues with the White Sox, but Jason Lane always believed in Andrew Vaughn. And I love uh when Jason started kind of dropping those little sprinkles to the front office. Um they listened, you know, they’re listening to a coach who has a relationship, a third base coach who’s been in the big leagues, uh knows the game well. And I think that’s kind of the heart of the Brewers, the essence of what the Brewers are. It’s a bit of an all hands on deck. It’s a bit of a everybody’s opinion is valuable. Um they may not act on that but they’re going to hear it and that’s why this organization has been successful and Andrew Vaughn’s kind of the one of the many symbols of a resurrection pro project that uh has been that way. He’s he’s made a few tweaks. You pointed that out Dro very well. He’s made a few tweaks but man he could always hit always. And he’s come up. He’s been freed up. And like I think Jason Lane’s line to him was, “Look, this is the big leagues, but this is Jo Ball. We’re playing Jo Ball here. We’re here to win. We’re here to try to every day figure out a way to win.” And you know, for me, the Brewers have brought uh such a breath of fresh air, not to be so critical on the analytics world, but the analytics world for a while there was choking the game. analytics has a place and definitely has a spot in Milwaukee, but the baseball world that I grew up with is back. The moving runners, taking the extra bases, putting pressure on the defense, uh, signing baseball type players who love the game and want to work. Durban would be a great example of a trade. Collins, all these guys, Sal Felic, these are just like gym rats. These are dirt bags, you know. Um, and I think that with the superstars in Cheurio and Yelich has really been part of the mix. Andrew Vaughn’s one of those guys like he loves ball. He loves baseball and you need players who love baseball and I’ve seen it in Christian Yelich even, you know, he’s he’s back. He’s got his mojo back and he is the star and the face of this franchise. But Vaughn’s like that’s going to be the guy if they go on and do something dramatic when they do the documentary. Andrew Vaughn’s uh acquisition is going to be a big chapter. Yeah. Hey, real quick. BA uh you got a chance to call it some tennis calling the French Open for TNT Sports. I I heard an interview where you were saying that you were very I don’t know if hesitant is the right word, but you were you were nervous during it. How how was that experience for you? It’s about as nervous as I’ve ever been actually. And I’m, you know, I’m sitting next to John Mackenroe and Jim Courier and Lindseay Davenport and, you know, I got no business being there, but I I I prepped hard for it. Lauren knows, I mean, she she was with me. We studied. I um I started playing a lot of tennis and prepped hard and and then I started using some baseball phrases when I was calling tennis that I thought worked. Like, you know, a ball on the line. I said, “Man, that’s a that’s paint right there.” And I would get like, “Yeah, I’ve never heard that before. That’s good.” So, I started I started cross referencing, not by design, just cuz, you know, you’re pulling from a vocabulary that, you know, but I really love the sport. I’ve always loved the sport. Um, and Ben Shelton just won in Toronto last night. And, you know, Ben Ben is the next great American coming. And, um, it’s been a lot of fun. I’ve gotten to know Brian, his father, who’s his coach, really well. We were texting about that victory. So, I love the tennis culture. I love baseball obviously, you know, the NBA, college basketball, whatever I’m doing, I’m totally into. I just love the art of sport and presenting sport. So, yeah, it was a great thrill and I’m glad to to be on board for a number of years for Roland Gar. He started as he’s a fantastic cameraman and he would shoot and he would do the playbyplay. He’d say it while he was shooting it. He started from the ground up and he does everything he does he does well. Uh Brian, we appreciate you joining us. Enjoy your weekend and uh good luck to those Brewers this weekend against New York. All right, see you guys. Always great to be with you. Keep up the great work.

  1. Murph base⚾️ is the secret 🤐 sauce! The Brew Crew has bought into the philosophy in the 3 phases of the game! Coaches are excellent with the players! GOOOO Brew!

  2. I can't get enough of Brian Anderson. He is so talented, and just such a great, personable, kind, and funny man. He is really perfect for the world of being a play-by-play and analyst for any sport he does. Wow. I just hear his voice for any sporting event, opening the show, and I just smile.
