We’re talking Angels baseball with you every Monday through Friday, every single weekday. On today’s show, it’s a fan mail Friday, so you get to be part of the conversation. You sent us some really great questions, made me do all kinds of digging. Everybody’s putting me to work, Mike. And so, uh, we have some really great questions, Mike. Let’s start with this first one, uh, from Micah Julian. Tell us about it. Yeah, he DM’d us on Twitter. He asked this question. I know this is very uncomfortable. It’s a very uncomfortable conversation to have because we all love him as a person, but is Logan Hoppy really the catcher of the future? We all know his defensive metrics are horrible and as a batter his strikeout rate is super high. What do you guys think about a position change or maybe even a potential Logan Ohappy trade? John, what do you think about Micah’s question? How dare they ask about our bowling buddy in the show in the show? No, you know what? And and this is actually not just Micah’s question, but I’ I’ve seen it a lot on social media, so I think I think it’s worth addressing. I think it’s worth talking about. And so, can we can we just zoom out a little bit from the ups and downs of this season, Mike, and remember a couple of things. Logan Hoppy is 25 years old. Yeah. This is really his second full season in the majors because remember in 2023 he missed April 21st to August 17th. He was out the whole season. Mhm. With a shoulder issue. Remember also that Otani wanted to pitch to him. Yeah. And I think that’s a pretty good uh uh vouch. It’s a nice high five. Right. Right. Right. And so I think that that’s important to keep in mind. Like I know we get caught up in the scrutiny of one season to the next and look I think you could make the case that yeah maybe catcher isn’t his best position da da da da but here’s what else I’ll tell you. Fan graphs has Logan O’Har that’s wins above replacement. So he’s not any better and he’s not any worse than a replacement level player. That’s not great. However, when you look around the league and you see that he’s got a I think it’s a 94 weighted runs created plus that means he’s 6% worse than league average. There’s actually catchers in this league who fall under that. And remember what a catcher is. You don’t get a lot of production out of catchers. So, the fact that Logan has done what he’s been able to do so far at the dish and despite his bad defensive metrics, it’s evened out. Zero war hasn’t been any good, hasn’t been any worse, right, than than somebody who could easily come in and replace him. So, I think that’s key to remember. Well, and when you talk about catcher production, right, somebody inevitably will say, “Well, what about Cal Raleigh?” Well, Cal Raleigh is an anomaly that the numbers he’s putting up are are Mike Piaza numbers. However, since July, go look at Mariners’s Twitter. Since July, they have dumped on him because he has not been good. They dumped on the big dumper. They did. And it’s been a terrible month for him. Lots of terrible at bats. Defensive metrics aren’t good. Maybe somebody says, “Well, what about Will Smith?” Right? and and he plays for the Dodgers. What about him and what he does? John, you’ve got some interesting defensive metrics numbers about Oh, and in comparison to Will Smith, why don’t you share that? Yeah, I just want to I just want to make clear that when we talk about uh you know, his defense behind the dish isn’t that great. Let’s talk about what we’re talking about when we talk about his his metrics, right? Talky talk. Yep. And that’s the thing is I know that it’s easy to be like, “Well, his defensive metrics suck.” And and this is not a a knock against Micah because he asked a great question. What we’re saying is people people will say, “Well, have you seen his outs above average?” Yeah. Do you know what you’re talking about? Let’s get a good scope, right? Like, let’s take a good bite of of the metrics. And we’re only sharing you the metrics and the stats. We’re not sharing from a perspective that we’re trying to defend our bowling buddy and and things like that. These are just John, you’re blowing it. Uh but these metrics are helpful to see what’s happening out there. And and this is why we love Statcast. Statcast isn’t just launch angle and and made up numbers. Statcast tells you what’s actually happening and it measures it in numbers which instead of just the eye test, it tells you is he really sucking or is he really good. So, let me tell you this. The one of the defensive metrics we talk about when we talk about catchers is catcher framing runs above average. That’s a fancy way of saying how often does a catcher get a strike call for their starting pitcher or their relief pitcher on the edges of the zone. And so, I have this graphic that I put together and this comes from Baseball Savant Statcast and those on the audio side will describe it for you. But on the left side, we have Logan O’Hap, who is -4 catching, framing runs above average. He’s towards the bottom of the league, Mike. Out of 56 catchers, he’s 49th. Mhm. But if you want to get into the nitty-gritty, look at some of the areas where he steals strikes really well. the top of the zone in the middle, the left and right side of the zone and the bottom of the zone. Right 50% on the left side of the strike zone. That’s in on the right-handed hitter away from the left-handed hitter. Uh toward the top of the zone, 45% of the time he gets a called strike uh there. That’s good for 18th among 56 catchers. Uh 16.6 on the top left corner of the strike zone. That’s good for 22nd among catchers. Down at the bottom left, 26.7. That’s good for 23rd among catchers. Right. So, he’s not bottom of the barrel in every single part of the strike zone. He actually does pretty well at getting strikes for his catcher. Not the greatest, but not the worst. And when you compare it to the rest of the league, he seems to be right there in the middle, right? And and the worst ones are the right side of the strike zone and the bottom of the strike zone. But then you look at like the bottom right, he’s 36th at stealing strikes for his catchers. Top right, uh, in on the left-handed hitter, he’s 25th. So, good numbers there, but overall, he’s toward the bottom of 56 catchers in the league. Now, you think about somebody like Will Smith. Obviously, his bread and butter is his bat, and that’s why the Dodgers keep him around. But did you know that in terms of catcher framing runs above average, Will Smith ranks at the bottom? Mhm. With negative9, that’s 56th out of 56 catchers. And when you look around the uh strike zone, he’s 44th among all those catchers. uh at the top left. In the middle of the top, he’s 54th. Uh he’s 34th uh in the top right, 27th on the side, which is good. So, he’s good at bringing some of those pitches back into the zone in the middle of the zone. Um he’s 54th in on the hands of the left-handed hitter. Uh get this, he’s 10th at stealing strikes at the bottom right corner of the zone, where that would be in on the uh the left-handed hitter. 21st at the bottom and 37th on the bottom left. But compare those to where Logan Hoppy sits. Logan’s a lot better in most of those categories and in most of those sections of the strike zone. So again, you can take a 10,000 foot view of well, his metrics aren’t that great, but when you break it down, um, out of 56 catchers, there’s a lot that he’s doing well. But is there room for improvement? Absolutely. And we know that this this year has been his worst year behind the dish. But that leads me into another point. Like we can consider a positional change for him. I think that that’s totally fine. They did it with Napoli, right? But remember what happened to Taylor Ward, Mike? What can we can you discuss that a little bit? He went from uh catcher, third baseman, outfielder, moved him around a bunch, right? And it wasn’t until 2022 that he found a place. And it wasn’t really until 2022 that he started to kind of be a major league baseball player because years before that he wasn’t super great when he came up and looked kind of lost. And so that in comparison to Ohapy this year, I think is a good one toone comparison because Oh, has been changing his stance, adjusting at the plate, changing his catching stance again, listening to his coaches. The truth is is that this has really been a transitional year for Logan O’H. And it hasn’t been great. It really hasn’t been great, but it’s been a transitional year, meaning that it’s been a learning year and it’s really his second full season in Major League Baseball. Whatever happened to the sophomore slump? Right. Right. Yeah. He he really is somebody that has been learning and learning and learning, which is what we appreciate about him as fans, but he’s also somebody that you can tell is learning and adjusting and all of those things. So if if you want to then add one more layer of learning and adjusting and growing, then yeah, move him to a different position. But what I think what we’re facing right now with Logan O’Hap is a lot of it’s in his head. A lot of information is coming his way. And John, I don’t think that we need to we we can’t discount the quote unquote pressure of having Travis Darno come in who is a quality major league catcher who can offensively perform and defensively has a great track record, a great history. And so I know that there’s probably got to be some pressure on Logan Oppo to perform. And he might be grabbing the bat a little bit too tight. He might be trying to steal pitches that he shouldn’t be stealing. He might be trying to hustle and make the play. Right. Well, to your point, you know, right out of the gate, they gave uh Kyle Hendris to Darno. Um didn’t did they give Kikuchi to Darno or there was there’s one more pitcher in there that they gave they they connected with Darno right out of the gate, right as soon as the season began. And I don’t think that that’s a problem. But think about where Logan Hoppy’s at where, oh shoot, they gave two of the five catchers to my backup. Um, I also have to perform at the plate if I want to keep my spot. Well, how many times have we seen Darno in there because Logan Hoppy’s been struggling? How many times have we seen Darno DH over Logan O’H? Right? Like, it’s already happening, Mike. It’s already happening to this 25year-old where he’s losing some time. He’s losing his spot because they have a really great backup. Now, I’m still waiting for the darno, I want Logan Hoppy to be the best catcher in Angels history. Yeah. Um, and between him and Salano, I we just haven’t seen it yet. So, I I’m wondering if it’s is it information overload? Is it drinking from a fire hose? What do you think? Uh, yeah, it might be all it might be all of that. Right. I think that what what Logan has done and it and it it has to do with coaching. It has to do with the narrative. I think John really this is year one for Logan O’H trying to be a really good catcher and he’s got new guys speaking in his ear and leading him in a certain direction and I think that we’ll see a bit more of Logan O’H spring training probably a bit more confident. Will he ever be Benji Molina? Probably not. Will he ever be somebody that we will celebrate his defensive metrics? Probably not. But I think his bat has the potential to cover some of that like Will Smith does for the Dodgers. And when the Angels win, I think a lot of the things that we’re talking about with Logan Hoppy will not be as loud because the Angels are actually competitive. And it’s not in Perry Manosian’s definition. It’s an actual definition in the dictionary. Competitive being that they’re in this thing. They’re winning games. They almost have 90 wins. Those types of things. And I think that that plays into a lot of the the I don’t want to say burying of Logan Ohappy, but the questions about Hoppy because we see it in front of us. We see the failure happening in front of us and and it and it’s it’s hard to ignore and it’s happening with a lot of other failures around him and it’s happening at really big moments. I think those things start to change once we see more of a veteran come out of him. I I think we got to give him at least one more year to figure out what he’s doing behind the plate. Yeah, I’m not ready to give up on somebody who’s 25, right? In the second year of his career. Thanks for making Log on Angels your first listen of the day. Coming up, are the Angels the worst team in baseball with bases loaded and less than two outs. We had a really great question come through and again, they put me to work and I did the research and we’ll get into all of that coming right up. oldest daughter comes to the dinner table last night, says to my youngest daughter, uh, “Hey, you want to go see Spacy Jane?” And uh, she went, “Yes.” And then they looked at me and they said, “Dad, do you like Spacy Jane?” And I said, “I do?” And she goes, “Yeah.” So she played me the songs and I do listen. I’ve listened to Spacy Jane. Never knew the name. Never knew what I was listening to, but it was something that my oldest daughter passed along to me. Here’s why I’m telling you this story. We’re continuing fan mail Friday where everybody sent in so many great questions. We might need to do like a makeup edition because there were so many questions, Mike, that we just couldn’t get to. So, um I’m going to save those and and we’ll make sure that we get to them. But, uh Mike, this question from J.J. do. Why don’t you uh hit us with that one? Yeah, by the way, I just realized who J.J. uh was I I know this guy. He’s from our hometown. Oh, that’s wild. And we did church work together. And so JJ, I’m so glad that you’re a listener and an everydayer. He asked this question. He said, “Do the Angels lead the league with bases loaded less than two outs and not scoring seems like it happens way too often.” John, you did some digging. What’d you find? Yeah, once again I turned to our old buddy Baseball Savant aka Statcast and here’s what I found. So, uh, when you consider the Angels in situations where the bases are loaded and there are less than two outs, uh, that means zero outs or one out. Mhm. Throughout this season, the Angels have had 60 of those opportunities. Uh, so that’s happened 60 times. Base is loaded. Less than two outs. And they’re 0 for 60. No, that’s it. Segment over. Yeah. Uh, no, they actually So, out of everybody who’s had bases loaded, less than two outs, the Angels have had 60 opportunities, that’s 10th most. Wow. In the league. So, uh, that’s that’s pretty good considering they’re, you know, top 10 in creating those situations. But, Mike, it’s what they make of those situations, right? So, of those 60 situations, bases loaded, less than two outs, they’ve put 39 balls in play, 13 of those have been hits, and 10 of those have been like sacrifice hits to score a run. They’ve also struck out 16 times. M. So, 23 out of the 60 moments that they’ve had with bases loaded, less than two outs, they’ve scored 23 out of 60. That’s a 36% rate in which they scored. Now, in case you’re curious, because I’m sure people really want to know this, uh, the Angels have a 32% strikeout rate in those situations. That’s fifth worst in baseball. uh the four teams worse than them. It’s actually not bad company. The Mets, the Diamondbacks, the Padres’s, and the Astros. So again, in situations, bases loaded, less than two outs, the Angels have the fifth worst strikeout rate at 32%, but they have scored in 36% of those situations. Now, I I in case anybody’s wondering, the 39 balls in play, and I said 13 of those have been hits, 10 of those have been sacrificed hits. You’re probably thinking, well, where’s the other 16? Well, this was only results that resulted in in scoring. Okay, so that’s why 23 out of 60 moments they’ve scored. Uh, so I just wanted to make that clear. But Mike, for comparison, the Mariners are number one in this situation, aren’t they? They they have had the most chances where the bases were loaded with less than two outs. They’ve had that 76 times. Tell us about the Mariners. So, they put 58 balls in play. 76 times. 58 balls in play. 20 of those have been hits. Five of those were sacrifices to score a run. And they’ve struck out 17 times. So, in 25 of the 76 opportunities, they’ve scored. That’s a 33% rate in which they’ve scored. Now, got to keep in mind the Mariners have created more situations where that happens. So, their rate of scoring is going to be a bit lower than the Angels, but they’ve got seven more hits than the Angels do in those situations. They Here’s here’s a comparison. Singles, Mariners have 12 singles to the Angels eight. Doubles, Mariners have four to the Angels three. And grand slams, Mariners have four to the Angels two. So, they’ve had more opportunities and they’ve come through in more opportunities even though their metrics are a bit less. It’s because they’ve had more opportunities, right? Yeah. They’ve created more bases loaded, less than two out situations than the Angels have had. But again, the Angels um in the 60 tries that they’ve had, they’ve they’ve scored 23 out of those 60 moments. Again, 36% rate in that situation. it. I mean, I don’t know, Mike. It It feels good. Like, it that feels okay, but Yeah. Here’s here here’s the tension. Here’s the problem. Tell me tell me because I’m trying to explain it because because it’s what they do after that, right? They base is loaded, less than two outs. They scored a run. That’s it. Right. But you read when you read the the Mariners numbers, the Mariners have four more singles, one more double, and two more home runs, which were grand slams, which means they’re scoring a whole lot more runs in those moments. Yeah. The Angels coming through. Yeah. Hey, that’s a check in the box of yay, you did it, right? But then they’re that’s all they do. That’s all they do. So if if it’s four to three and you’re down by one, they load the bases less than two outs. They’re getting a run 36% of the time, right? But that’s it. They’re getting a run. A run. A run. And it could just be an out, too. Like it could be a a ground out RBI, right? They’re not piling on. They’re not taking full advantage of that, which for the Mariners, the Mariners are doing that. They’re scoring one run and then scoring possibly two more runs in that situation because they’re moving the ball around. They’re making contact. And they’re a good team. That’s why they’re doing that. And the Angels just haven’t been doing that. Where the heck did they get their offense? Like I know they made trades for Naylor and Suarez, but like all of a sudden coming into the season, it was like, man, they didn’t do anything to help their offense. They brought back Jorge Palano and then all of a sudden he was tearing it up to start the year. Cal Raleigh took off. Did you know that Cal Raleigh in my league, I drafted him, by the way, fantasy, he didn’t go till the 10th round. Now there’s there’s 10 of us or 12 of us, I can’t remember. I think there’s 10 of us, right? And so yeah, that makes sense. It’s a little bit later of a round, but there were catchers that went before him, but I felt like, you know what, I’m going to get myself a catcher who’s going to hit some home runs because you don’t get a lot of home runs from the catcher position. That kind of goes back to Logan O’Hy, Mike. Like, you don’t get a lot of home runs from the catcher position. And so, and I didn’t get the number one pick that I wanted. And so, I was like, I’m going to make up for it in other places. And so, I went with a home run hitting Cal Raleigh. I just lucked out with the fact that he’s having a career year this year. Yeah. Yeah. Now, to take it back to this conversation, another reason why these moments feel like the Angels are failing more than they’re winning, even though their percentages are not bad, is because of their strikeout rate, John. Yeah. Fifth worst in the league with bases loaded and less than two outs, 32%. Four teams worse than them, Mets, Diamondbacks, Padres’s, Astros. All really good teams. Maybe Diamondbacks can be questionable, but all really good teams. But I I think what you’ll find, and this is just taking a guess, is that they’re probably similar to the Mariners, that they’re striking out, but they’re also probably scoring and moving runners and hitting sacrifice flies, which the Angels aren’t. And and the reason why this is so important is because against Tampa Bay, eighth inning, you have a chance to take the lead and you had three guys that could not make contact at all. Yeah. couldn’t put the ball in play, couldn’t even get that tying run across from third. That was hugely disappointing. And so, yeah, J.J. Jot, I appreciate him sending in this question because I think it was top of everybody’s mind after that performance against the Rays on Wednesday afternoon. And this one came from Nick Vakus on YouTube. Nick Nick V. Uh he’s our um he’s our our big brother cuz he warned me about the uh the Instagram map. Did you hear about that? Yeah. It shows your location, by the way. Yeah. And a lot of people didn’t realize that they had opted in or were opted in and didn’t choose to be opted in. Yeah. So, uh friends, if you’re using Instagram, make sure you turn off this Instagram map feature off in your Didn’t want us to get doxed. Yeah. Exactly. So Nick said, “Hey guys, been a while. Just had a fan mail Friday question for you. Realistically, what moves would the Angels have to make this coming off season that would leave you feeling optimistic that this team could be playoff ready? Is it achievable in one off season or is it something that given the availability of free agents and the trade block would even be possible?” Mike, what do you say to start us out? I I would really love to see some of the young guys be in our starting rotation. The Kayan Datas, the Sam Aligiris. I I think that they’re at a place where it’s it’s time for them to prove their worth. What would what would really help me though is is seeing a couple of pieces that come in that aren’t older pieces but are pieces that we we can almost guarantee that they’re going to put up the same kind of numbers, right? And and and that means that we’re going to have to spend a little bit. Let me let me give you a couple of examples. I don’t want I don’t want to spend on big gigantic players. I would love to get maybe second tier players. I think what we’ve often gotten is like mid players. I would love like A minus B+ players. Now, when we signed him, I think people would say that he was probably an an an A minus, maybe A+ player, but Bobby Abrau was a perfect signing for this Halo team in the late 2000s. The Angels need somebody like that. So, uh the the first baseman and he was with the Marlins, he’s now with the Padres’s. The lefty that I love that Thank you. That would be someone like that I think would be it would bring confidence to me putting him in this lineup at second base, third base, wherever he feels comfortable. Somebody like that that we could fill a need, not necessarily Luis Rise, but somebody of that nature. He’s going to slap the ball around, going to make contact. I think that that’s really important. And then I think we need another really consistent starting pitcher. I think we need another guy like uh a Usay Kikuchi. I think we need somebody that, you know, we talked about an ace and all of those things. I’m trying to think in the lines of what the Angels would do. I would love to have another consistent starting pitcher that, you know, he’s going to be out there every fifth day and that he’s going to be competitive. he’s going to be in the game. And and I think that that would help me to know like, okay, this team is potentially now adding to their win total, maybe third wild card spot, if they’re infusing it with players that are young and vibrant, ready to win, but also veteran players that are not old and drop offs and we’re getting a deal, but guys that we know are coming in and we gave them a little bit of extra cash and they’re not going to be the leaders of the team, but they’re going to be great pieces that we can rely upon. What are your thoughts? Yeah, I’m I’m with you. I think that in terms of needs, they have to figure out center field, right? And whether that is Bryce Teodosio, I don’t think he’s a long-term solution. I think he’s more of a fourth outfielder type. But hey, give him the rest of the season to prove me wrong and then we all get excited about him in 2026. But, uh, Nelson Rod is certainly a long way away. I don’t think that we see him anytime soon. Um, we might see him in spring training as we discussed the other day. So, you’re going to need a stop gap and you’re going to need somebody who can actually run and man center field if it’s not Kairen Paris, if it’s not Bryce Teodosio. But, we’ve tried it. We tried it and it’s it hasn’t worked out, right? So, I think that center field is an area of concern. I also think can we for the love of all that’s good. Can we please solve the third base issue? I know that Oswald PZA is here. Um, you’re really gonna have to bank on the bat coming around because he plays great defense. Um, and here’s the thing. Somebody said, “Why do we have another Squid on this team?” Well, to answer that, and they’re referring to PZA that way. Yeah. To answer that, here was my issue with Squid, Andrew Velasquez. He thought he was Barry Bonds at the plate. He never understood the assignment, which was, bro, put the ball in play. Yeah. stop swinging for the We know that every, you know, 26 games you can hit a home run and it looks really great, but but just put the ball in play and play great defense. Yeah. And so I’m hopeful that PZA doesn’t think that he’s Barry Bonds, doesn’t think he’s Mark Magguire, right? And and the bat will come around. Um but again, Mike, that’s that’s a lot of hope and and it seems like we go into every offseason with a lot of hope and not a lot of solutions. And so I think third base, center field, are certainly areas the Angels will address their bullpen. They have guys coming back. Um starting rotation, I’m with you. They need another you say type of player. Look, I would I want them to get an ace 100%. Let’s just be clear about that. Yes, we won an ace, but I will never ever expect an ace as long as Marino owns this team. Yep. And and even if they tried to trade for one, I don’t even think that they could get the best available out there, right? And nobody’s trading their future ace anyway. Like Paul Paul SK is staying with the Pirates, right? Um, having said all that, obviously pitching, starting pitching, I think, is a great area to improve, but my biggest concerns are center field and third base. Can you address them all in one off season? Well, you could, Nick, and I could, and you could, Mike. Um, but will Perry and Ry Marino address all of that in one off season? To me, that just doesn’t feel realistic. I would like it to be. And you know, every year we do our GM show and it feels like, hey, we could we could get these guys. It would keep them under the luxury tax and d and and you know, then they kind of do 50 30% of what we we would attempt to do, right? Yeah, that’s the problem. Yeah, that is really the problem. And that brings us to the end of our show. We’re so thankful that you’re here. Thanks for making Locked On Angels your first listen of the day. Really wonder if we actually do something about 3B or just stick with Peraza. My wish would be taking a chance on Murakami, but that is probably highly unlikely.
The entire "framing" lunacy is solved with ABS. We all agree that a pitch is objectively a ball or strike. With available technology, let's avoid as many incorrect calls as possible (check swings are still umpire discretion).
Logan O'Hoppe has been a professional in 2 different organizations for 7 years, and still hasn't learned how to catch. He is the worst starting defensive catcher in all of MLB, in terms of Defensive runs saved. And since last summer his OPS+ is 90. That's 50% of his mlb career. If O'Hoppe is part of the core of the franchise future, than the future of the Halos is pretty bleak.
I love you guys, but you're really stretching here behind the dish metrics. Hitting is the name of the gm. Strike outs way too much in key situations. I like him, but needs to improve in that area.
O’hoppe has played 90 of 114 games this season, missed one game due to injury, I just feel like he should be playing more than 78% of the time
We need to find a true ace to our starting rotation, and a third baseman that is not collecting a paycheck to stay at home basically 4 out of 5 years he has been on this team.
Logan O'hoppe has potential. Let's give the young man time to grow as a player.
Will we end the season.500? Will the Angels look to change their manager and staff if Washington can not return?
O’Hoppe is exactly the type of player that we want on this team. He's a solid person and works hard to improve. I think he gets self- conscious about his offensive and defensive issues and gets overwhelmed and it brings his confidence down. But like you said, he's 25 and this is only his second year starting. As he matures as a player both mentally and skill wise, I think we're going to have one of the better catchers in the league and a guy that I hope is on the team for many years to come. Great job Halo Bros!
Starting next season how well O'hoppe frames and steals pitches is going to be exponentially less important.
his defense is ass. he needs to quit catcher asap worst hands ive ever seen. move him to 1b, of.
Thank you for sticking up for Logan. He’s way too good of a hitter and leader to get this much heat. He just needs more time to stick with one plan all the way through.
Personally, I believe the Angels should be getting better output from the catching position.
I often wonder why the Angels under Wash do not try any slash bunting aka fake bunt especially with RISP. The logic is that it will draw in the infielder to mess with their shifting and increase rate of bloob singles. Yes it doesn't look sexy, but hey, Ichiro became a no-doubter HoF by his ugly slap batting. If it works, it'll look sexy.
“Ohtani wanted to pitch to him”
I mean did he really have a choice? 😂 it’s not like he had any better choices
We still have the highest paid 3rd baseman in the league for next year at 35M per year
Hey M&J, on hindsight, would you guys be annoyed that GMPM traded off our #2 prospect Edgar Quero to the White Sox for Giolito and Lopez in 2023? He now seem to be doing really well as part of the Sox's new young core and his stats in his rookie season are better across the board than O'Hoppe except HRs. Even his batting average is higher than anyone on the Angels' roster.
Would he be a better fit of young players if we had kept him than banking on the hype of O'Hoppe? There's a reason why Phillies were happy to take Marsh for O'Hoppe, and it now appears that his bark may be stronger than his bite.
Since the season is lost, let O’Hoppe play then you can reevaluate his performance 😊
I think O’Hoppe has so much potential, as with so many of our players. In my opinion we need better 1 on 1 coaching. I think if we had better coaching staff that could work with our younger guys to improve. For example, our coaching staff seems to think our strike out rate is just fine, as long as we hit home runs. I just feel that we have that potential, but we don’t have a great coaching staff (top to bottom) to get the best out of our young players. You can see it when our guys are playing on all cylinders, they really are good. I’ve said this before, look at Moniak, I read that the Rockies worked with him on his hitting and strike outs and this year he’s hitting .267 with 17 HR, 45 RBI, OPS .839 and only 78 strike outs. It’s definitely our coaching. We would have had control of him until 2028. But hey, we got Jorge Soler….
As with anything in life , you must adapt, relocate, or perish.
Fan of O'Hoppe here. Let's be honest WAR compares to a AAAA player where WAA compares to a MLB level replacement. He has a -0.6 WAA. Sorry guys, I know it's hard to be critical about your bowling buddy. However now that there isn't any real pressure to win this season I expect him to play better. As another fan mentioned I think he tried to be a leader too early. Not his fault there was no veteran leadership and the fans were calling for someone to step up. Hopefully he can focus more on himself and become the player he wants to be.
It’s in his stance. He needs to open up his stance, get both eyes on the ball, work on contact and forget the FIREHAT which seems to be the only thing this team thinks is a win.
Ohoppe is someone who needs to stay and grow here. I feel like if him and schanuel and neto get their groove like before, specifically ohoppe in this instance, then I believe they’ll actually have a chance which is what I thought this year. We’ve just had unfortunate turns of events with Ron Washington being out and also big helps like Ben Joyce not being out there due to injuries. I just know this team is good rn and I feel like this rhythm is something we need for the future of this team going forward especially when we get our clutch players back.
Logan O'Hoppe is in his 2nd full year @ 25 years of age versus Raleigh in his I believe 5th full year & 28 years old. Give Logan a few more years to figure it out & he'll be there.
100% Logan is part of the future. That being said, he needs to be sent down to AAA, after his bobble head night. Have him take a breather from the pressure of being a catcher at the MLB level. Have him reset, fix his swing, fix his defense without the chip on his shoulders of being in the MLB, and bring him back up sometime in September.
O'HOPPE IS A LEADER ON THIS TEAM AND A VALUABLE IMPROVING HITTER…LEARNING TO PLAY LEFT AS WELL IS A PLUS😊
Is this more about O'hoppe lacking defensive potential or the Angels just being terrible developing talent? When a young player like him goes backwards defensively, you would think at least some of it has to do with poor player development. A catcher who can hit is so valuable. I'd love to see him develop into a fixture behind the plate. But, if it doesn't happen then maybe he can do for us what Napoli did for the Rangers once he was moved where he could focus much more on hitting.
