🔴LIVE 🔴Chicago Cubs VS St Louis Cardinals/ August 08 /Baseball Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
Just about to get started. And on the hill in this one, Matthew Liberator and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game. And you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Nico her leading things off and takes a strike. Oh, that’s off the plate. Come on, Matthew. And that one fouled off. and he hits a ground ball right side. Fires over to first. One out in the top of the first. All right, let’s take a look at the lineup. Chris, this is a lineup offensively that could be really good for years to come. They’re deep first and foremost, but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else, it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team. And I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams, especially in a big game, big series. Matthew, late swing fouled off. Turner 40 years old now and they went out and made a trade for him last season. One down, base is empty. Had a breaking ball misses outside. Tried to back door him with that slider right there, but just missed off the plate. Good pitch though. And that’s outside. Two and one. One out. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Battling here as he fouls it away. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Closed but called a ball. Ball three. outside and that is ball four. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Fought off foul. Here comes the one that clips a corner. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. And now the batter is Carson Kelly. Swing and a miss. That’s strike one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Turner on second. Suzuki over at first. So, one away. That one outside and one and one. and misses inside. Good job to fight that one off. Two on, one out. And that is downstairs. Three and two now. Way to lay off that pitch down. Swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. Nuke grabs it on the run. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Here’s the center fielder, Pete Crow Armstrong. He set a new career high in home runs this year. And Sigy, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now. Going on. [Applause] just missed. First inning going a bit long. 23 pitches to this point. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Two outs. Check swing called strike in there. Sets him down on strikes. That was pretty nasty. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Back here with my pal Singi. And today on the hill, Daniel Palencia. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Brendan Donovan leading things off and takes a strike. Swinging a ground ball. Horner over to first. One up, one down. Take a look at the lineup. Sing. We’re looking at a young lineup here. Not much experience, but they’re going to bring a lot of energy to the field. Yeah, and that’s just it, Boo. We expect this lineup to play hard no matter what. They are an exciting group to watch. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. Obviously a guy who makes good contact, hits for average, but one of the things in today’s game, the value in the fact that he hits both righties and lefties. First pitch, not close. They’re so reliant on the matchups nowadays, Chris. And it’s huge when you don’t have to sit a guy or platoon him. when you can hit, you know, both sides in terms of pitcher arms. You’re a guy that it’s dives, but it falls. Could be extra bases around second now as they still don’t have it. And he’s at third with one away. That’s a triple. He was all over that one. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. One down, runner at third. And the batter now, Alec Burlson. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. And that one hit to first and he takes it himself for the out. Unbelievable. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Lars Nar. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. And that one a little below the knees. One and0. [Applause] O, that one went straight back and got her ump right in the mask. Let’s hope he’s okay. [Applause] and one and two. Two outs with a runner at third. [Applause] That one lifted to left. H sizes this one up. Makes the grab and that is the inning. The Cards leave one scoreless after one. All set for the start of the inning. This is Willie Castro. Willie Castro. Liberator back to work out towards right center field. Scott on his way over and out number one on the grab. Woo! He was all over that first pitch fast ball. Just barely missed it. Man, this guy was ready to hit in half up to hit a switch hitter batting right and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. [Applause] Second inning here. No score. Swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can forget it. Ian Hap bops one out of here. It’s one- nothing. Sometimes too much velocity will cause a pitcher to throw through the sink and that means that there’s more force seam action than there is sink and that can turn into a really good pitch to hit. Well, we saw it right there. Didn’t miss a stitch on that baseball. He’s got himself a home run. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. Sanker catches the zone at the knees. One down, base is empty. Right through there for a strike. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. But a short stop takes a ball. Got him looking and he did not like the call. Knight. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the rookie third baseman, Matt Shaw. Out of bounce right side. The flip to the pitcher covering and that will end the inning. Cubs get one on the solo shot. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the shortstop at the play. Mason win. That’s out to center field. And there’s one down. Batting six. third base. Here’s Nolan Gorman taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level and he can’t come up with it. Still able to fire over the throw. Won’t get there in time and they can’t get the out. Waste no time there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. One gone runner at first and stepping in for the Cardinals, Jordan Walker in there and it’s 0 and one. swinging a foul out of play. Gorman the base runner at first with one out. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. [Applause] Can’t connect on the curve ball. Struck him out. You hear people talk about letting the ball travel so often in terms of a hitting approach. And that’s a great example why right there. If he’s willing to let that curveball get a little deeper into the zone before he commits, he’s way more likely to recognize that it’s making a beline for the dirt. On the other side, still a nice two- strike pitch though. Pedro Pah in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Man, this is pretty amazing. This guy is very efficient out there on the mound right now. Just nine pitches in the first. He’s got a chance to keep it to single digits again. Who does that? Two outs. That one fouled off. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Throw in holds the lead. Runner at second. Two on now with two away. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Victor Scott the next to hit. And no one can get there around third and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. Well, it’s pretty difficult to throw a base runner out at the plate with two outs on a base hit to the outfield, but an excellent job of coming up with it, getting rid of it quickly, and throwing on the money. That is great technique from start to finish. Nice job to end the inning. Top half of the third inning. Here’s the second base, Nicoer. That one is absolutely belted and one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases into second easily with a leadoff double. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Centerfielders in today’s game are so talented and so athletic. So when you blast one to deep center and get it to drop in, you know, you really put a great swing on it. And that was nicely done for extra bases. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And next for the Cubs, Justin Turner. He reached out to walk his first time. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] That clips a corner. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Left field. Nukebar sizing this one up. Makes the grab. One down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. So up now for Chicago. Seiya Suzuki one for one with a single so far. Move to second. Her back in on a dive. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Zips it across. Got him. Carson Kelly the next Cub to hit. He’s 0 for one. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. In the air, left field, makes the catch and that is that. Cubs leave one, but they lead it one to nothing. Bottom of the inning now up for St. Louis. Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. And that’s in for a strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. but left the bat on his shoulder on the ground. Toss to Turner. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Now the number two hitter, Ivon Herrera, one for one. He tripled in his first trip. [Applause] Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. He’s got it. There’s two away. Now batting first. And up next for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. Grounded out his first time. And that’s outside. Two out. Base is empty. That one ripped but fouled. Left-hand hitter waits and that misses and the count two and one. Foul ball there. Two down. Nobody on. Drilled in the air out towards right center. Castro on the move. [Applause] Brings it in. And that is that back here in St. Lewis as we go to the top of the fourth and now the center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong and that’s in there at the knees. Boo over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that you could have a really good day out there on the mound. Highf fly ball out towards left field. That’s back and that one hops the wall and that’s a leadoff double. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left. Didn’t quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence, but you’re never going to be disappointed with extra bases. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Willie Castro digs in now. That one the other way and it goes just foul. Come on. Just missed. You know, these Cubs showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. man at second. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and they lead by two. Comes through with the RBI. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Matthew Liberator out of the game and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. Now pitching Sunny Gray into the game. Still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Here’s the left fielder, Ian Hap. He’s already homered in this game. And the first pitch misses for ball one. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. fouled off. He was late. Sunny Gray checks on the runner. Castro back on a dive. In the air to left center. Scott sizes this one up. He’s got it. One away. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Swanson digs in. Struck out looking. It is first at bat. Swings and misses. 0 and one. Swanson, 31 years old, a former first round pick back in 2015. [Applause] And that one is lifted in the air. Walker on the move to the gap. Out number two. [Applause] Now that is third baseman Matt Shaw. So digging in Matt Shaw grounded out his first time. [Music] Swings through that one. 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. Castro off of first with two away. Runner on the go. Pitch outside. Throw. Save. That’s a stolen base. Man on second, two down. Just missed. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. Here’s a 2-2 on the ground right side. And that’s a fair ball. coming home. He’ll score. Well done. Drives in the run. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. So, the batting order turns over. Nico her will come up to hit. One for two. Close but called a ball. Ball one. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] And the sweeper is in for a strike. And that’s in the dirt. The countdown two and two. Runner at second. Two down. Top half of inning number four. [Applause] Next pitch inside and the count’s full. Justin Turner on deck for the Cubs down the right field line. That’s a base hit headed for the plate. The throw in. It’s off the mark and he scores and it’s four nothing. picks himself up an RBI. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And it’ll bring up Justin Turner. Fouled off left side. one in one. That one down the line. sends it across to first and that is that. Three runs on four hits, no errors and one left on. On now to the bottom of the fourth, it’s the Cubs four and the Cardinals nothing. Back here at Bush Stadium, John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Lars Nbar. Come on. And a strike right through there. That one at triple digits. And that one hammered ranging back. reaching for it, makes the catch. Got to love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. So, up next, Mason Win 0 for one with a fly out to center. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. If I’m at the dish right now, I am aggressive over the heart of the plate. This guy’s been filling up the strike zone. So, you know you’re going to get a good pitch to hit. And as nasty as his stuff is, you might as well take all three swings. One down, base is empty. Outside. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. That one missing inside. He never moved because he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away on the ground right side. Horner gets it to first and there’s two down. Now batting third base, two outs, space is empty. Now the third baseman Nolan Gorman reached on an infield single his first time hammered down the right side but foul little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. Swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. He shoots one out to right. His second homer this series. And they close the gap. It’s 4-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. Digging in Jordan Walker that misses the zone and that is ball one. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pahes a single his first time. That misses and it’s one and0. [Applause] Walker leads off first with two down to the inning. in the air right side. Castro gets under it and that will end the inning. Cardinals do get one back on the solo blast. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Andre Palante coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Seiya Suzuki getting ready to hit. Seya Suzuki win in for a strike. Good slider. You know, these Cubs doing a good job of putting the ball into play, and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. The numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every inning, and they’ve only struck out twice. So, they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball. That’s off the inside corner. Now, one and two. Ripped to short and he can’t come up with it. What was that? So a man at first. Now the Cubs four-hole hitter Carson Kelly bowl for two in this one. And downstairs next offering is downstairs. That one at the knees for a strike. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. And strike two. Runner at first with no outs here. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. Burlson moving back for this one. Won’t get to this one. It drops foul. We got full count. So, here we go. Base runner at first could be running on the pitch. He’s got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position. Even if it’s a swing and miss at the plate. Swings and misses. One out. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect. And halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Crow Armstrong up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. Man at first. One away. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So, I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. Willie Castro will hit next. That’s in there. Strike one. Runners at first and second with one gone. Breaking ball miss is down and away. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] Next offering is down low. Really good take especially with two strikes. On the ground could be two offbalance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Well, that’s great hustle out of the box to get down the line knowing that a double play will end the inning. Good job at the finish reaching out for the bag. Now they got runners on the corners and still an opportunity to pick up some runs. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder in half and a foul ball. Runners on first and third. Two away. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Newbar under it. And that’ll do it. Cubs strand a couple as they hold on to a 4-1 lead. pitching back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Drew Pomeratz. Well, you see the ERA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Victor Scott. And he’s already singled in this game. St. Louis outside and that’s ball one. You know, these cards doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. One thing that really stands out to me is how they’ve only struck out one time. That’s good discipline right there. And on top of it, they’re producing more than a hit per inning. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. All those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the ball into play. Anything can happen at that point. Then boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. That one misses. So a leadoff walk Brendan Donovan next up for the Cardinals. He’s grounded out a couple of times. Now this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But you know at the very least if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first. It feels like it’s really important getting back into this ball game. Here goes the runner. pitch misses. Safe at second with a stolen base. And that makes it 30 stolen bases for him this season. Singi, he definitely showed off the wheels there. Yeah, and it turned out to be a bang bang play. Statcast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed. That one missed. Scott at second with nobody out. Just missed. That one’s in there. And now three balls and a strike. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] Foul ball and it remains a full cow. struck him out looking. So, he gets the call and picks up the strike out looking. Sometimes with a good hitter at the plate, he’ll be the one to get the benefit of the doubt if he lays off on a close pitch like that, but just not right there. Strike zone definitely expand a little bit with two strikes. And now Ivon Herrera. [Applause] outside low and that’s ball one. [Applause] Let’s go. Come on. Just missed. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Man at second on the ground to the left and it stays fair. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. It’s 42. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics. So, digging in Alec Burlson and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Next offering is in for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Ball one there in the dirt. Blocked. And an excellent job keeping it right there. [Applause] tying run at the plate and it remains two and two. Hanging in there pretty good against the lefty. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact right through there. Got him. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Drew Pomerance departs. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. So, they turn to their closer Nate Pearson. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So we’ll see what he’s got here. And now Lars Nbar. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Applause] Two outs. and delivers outside. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Next offering misses now. Two balls and a strike. Two balls, one strike. Let’s do it. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Mason Win in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here and ball four to a board. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Substitution being made at first. Pitch running here. Garrett Hson. First and second, two outs. Win now at the plate. [Applause] And a first pitch fast is in for a strike. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. turned on but foul wide of third. Oh and two now. Popped up to the left into foul ground. He’s under it. Squeezes it. That is the inning. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now 42. Back after this on the show. New inning getting started. So up now for Chicago. Dansby Swanson. Palante back to work. And that’s in for a strike. [Applause] Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Applause] Fouled off and they’ll do it again. And they’ll do it again. A defensive swing right there. There’s some cheese on the inside part of the plate. Bet the hands are still stinging after that one. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Stays alive. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another one. Two on the ground to third. Throws across the diamond and Swanson is set down. Now batting third baseman Matt Shaw. Matt Shaw, the next Cub to hit. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Two down. [Applause] Now batting second base Nicoer. Here’s Nicoer. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. And that misses. And that’s ball two. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he could put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Swings through that and it’s a strikeout and it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing doing here this half. 678 do in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Cubs four and the Cardinals two. Bottom of the six now for St. Louis. Nolan Gorman. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms. And that’s a fair ball around first heading for two. Pulls in with a double. Third hit for him today. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. Now, that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Jordan Walker the next to hit. Hit hard on the ground is short. One away. Bottom of the six. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. And here’s the catcher, Pedro Pah. That one’s in there. Strike one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That one’s in there. 0 and two. outside with a breaking ball. [Applause] Slider misses outside. [Applause] And a good eye there. That’s a really good take. Victor Scott in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here with the tying run at the plate there. The home team trying to pull it out. [Applause] You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. Swings and misses. Struck him out and they’re down to their last out. just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. Just not able to put the bat on the ball. One out left for the Cardinals. And up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Gorman at second with two down. And there’s a ball. I got a ball. Check. Swing. Called. Strike. [Applause] Pearson is just one strike away. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, Summon from the bullpen had to come in, get a big out, and then had a little time to think about it before he went back out to get the final three outs of this ball game. Nonetheless, outstanding job to get the save and secure the win for his team. And your final 42. The Cubs go home. A winner for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
