Los Angeles Angels vs Detroit Tigers Predictions Today | Best MLB Picks For 8/8/25
It’s time for another Major League Baseball free pick. If you’re looking for a whole bunch of free picks and opinions, check out Total Bases, which is up on the Wager Talk YouTube channel right now. We go live every day, Friday or Monday to Friday, uh, for an hour. Whole bunch of thoughts on the MLB Slate, and you can always find the replay right here on the Wager Talk YouTube channel. But I’m going to talk about a game that we didn’t hit on the show today. It’s my only free free play breakdown for today. So, we’ll go a little bit longer because this is one that never came up on today’s show. And that is Angels Tigers. And, you know, my initial sort of first pass at this game uh was well, it’s Tariq Scooble. Um, you know, the Tigers need a win and they’ve got the guy that they want to do it on the mound. He is arguably the best pitcher in Major League Baseball and the game is priced accordingly with Scooble as a massive favorite at home. And honestly, I probably would have just left it, but knowing I had to come and do the video for this game, dug into this one a little bit deeper. And I actually do think that there there might be a couple of different ways uh to play the Angels here in some of the alternate markets. So, I just want to first say shout out to the Angels because in a day and age where like you’ve got teams like the Twins, um you know, the Diamondbacks, like you you have these teams that are like six games out of a wild card spot and they’re waving the white flag and they’re selling off their whole team, which I think is insane. And I think Major League Baseball, there’s got to be something that that that we can do about this like because I think that’s a problem. two months prior to the end of the season, you’re six games out and we’re we’re selling the team essentially. Shouldn’t shouldn’t happen. It can’t be allowed to happen. But it has become the norm in Major League Baseball to start to to look to next year or look to the future. The Angels went out and I don’t think they’re a playoff team by any means, but they were in that area and they decide, you know, they they bought guys. They went out and and improved their team at the trade deadline. I think part of that is just out of respect to Mike Trout, you know, how who knows how much longer how many who knows how many more options even or how many more chances Mike Trout is going to have to play in the playoffs. And they haven’t had much success in in recent years. So, I think the Angels are are a team where it’s like, you know, yeah, they they are on the outside looking in very much in the American League right now, but even after a couple losses to the race, they’re only six games back of a wild card race that, you know, has a lot of teams that have flaws. So, I applaud the Angels for saying, you know what, we’re not out of it. And that’s got to send a nice message to to a team that I haven’t been super high on this year, but I really can’t argue with like how they how good they’ve played at times, how much better they’ve played than what I thought they were going to be this year. And you talk about like the organization saying, “No, you know what? Let’s go for it.” Like we owe it to Trout and and indirectly owe it to the fans. And I think, you know, the Angels at least I think are going to continue to play hard because of that. So when I look at a game like this, the books are telling you, I mean, you you don’t need me to sit here and break down Tariq. He’s probably going to win the Sai Young. That’s really all you need to know. He is the top pitching option in the league and he’s priced like it. We know that. I’m going to I’m not even going to talk about him anymore in this breakdown because I’d rather talk about things that aren’t insanely obvious. What what’s not baked into the number fully here in my opinion is the fact that Tariq’s team, the Tigers, have had some real issues since the All-Star break. And I think we’re at the point where we’ve got to start looking at this Tigers team and saying, “All right, like they had, you know, we we’ll give them a pass on like how poorly they came out of the break. They got swept by the Mariners going into the break. It’s August 8th now. I mean, this was a Tigers team that had a double-digit lead in the AL Central and suddenly the Guardians, who aren’t even a great team in their own respect, have closed to within six games because of how poorly the Tigers have played. And then even after the Tigers had their little win streak at the end of July, they’re two and four to start um to start August and they just dropped two of three to a Twins team that that traded 11 guys and is is clearly like not, you know, competing like the way that you would expect a team like the Twins to compete. So when I start to consider those things and I look at some of these alternate markets which are going to be going to be priced very differently bookto book you you can get angels plus two runs at like minus 110 maybe minus 115 some places u you can get angels plus two and a half runs at some books as cheap as like minus 135 two and a half runs in a game that is a a massively important game for both of these teams and with a pitcher Kyle Hendrickx that you know he if he gets bombed like yeah you’re going to get blown out but Kyle Hendrickx is a veteran and when Kyle Hendrickx starts to get going a little bit he he can really like throw a very good game like the thing with Hrix is if the Tigers can get to him early like you know put him in you know behind in the game then it gets a little tougher but one thing I’ve noticed about Hrix is he’s got everyone off balance average exit exit velocity 87 mph. It’s one of the the t he’s in the top 10% in Major League Baseball in exit velocity. He he he generates soft contact. He his off speed stuff’s fantastic. He’s now throwing his change up more than any other pitch. So he’s he’s throwing he’s throwing a change up 40% of the time and he pairs it with a sinker and then he he’s such a a cerebral pitcher at this point and he’s such a veteran and almost like the the only thing that this generation has to to that you could even remotely compare to like a Greg Maddox in terms of like his thought process with pitching that like he’s been able to take an 87 mph fast ball a change up that’s really really good throw in sink and throwing a sinker and a curve that aren’t even like overly effective. But it’s like he just he throws everything in the zone and these hitters are are just confused because your average hitter goes up there and they’re trying to, you know, they they’re they’re programmed to hit high VO and you never get high VO from Kyle Hendricks. You just you just get change up sinker. Sometimes they’ll show you a curve away just to give you a different look. Sometimes they’ll show a fast ball like up by your eyes like literally just to change your eye level and and it can be very very effective. Now he’s not going to strike anyone out. Doesn’t really strike anyone out. He’s not going to get, you know, he he’s he’s there’s going to be times where he gets knocked around, but if you look at the the sum of all the parts for Hendrickx this year, 1.24 whip, erra’s in the mid4s, like he’s not a bum. not like he gets priced by the market. He can absolutely keep a team competitive. And so for that reason, I think you got to look at Angels in one of the alternate run markets here. Plus two being like minus 110, it’s tremendous value. And then some of these other prices that don’t or some some of these other websites that struggle to p uh to price the alternate run line markets, if they’re going to give you two and a half and it’s cheap enough, I think you have to take the two and a half runs because let’s say this game gets down to the bullpens like the Angels are certainly managing to win a game. And again, I just think that the Tigers right now, they don’t have enough talent to not play good baseball. And the reason the Tigers were able to build up this huge lead in the AL Central was by playing fundamentally sound, very clean, very good baseball, great base running, solid relief pitching, fielding their position, timely hitting, and all of those things have seem to gone out to seem to have gone out the window for the Tigers since the All-Star break. And they just don’t have enough actual talent to overcome not playing B playing ball at a high level. They’re not the Dodgers. They’re not, you know, they’re not one of these like powerhouse teams that can overcome that in my opinion. So here when you see the Tigers laying two runs or two and a half runs at the prices they’re laying it at, yeah, like Scooble’s definitely worth a good amount to the number. But what happens when he’s out after the fifth uh after the sixth or seventh inning? I think it’s reasonable to think he’ll probably go six or seven. If Hendrickx can come even close to matching that, the Angels are going to be right in this game. and they’re going to have a great chance to cover two and a half, push on two, maybe even make it a one-run game, maybe even win. So, the only way I could look at this game from a price standpoint is the Angels. And the more I sort of dig into it, the the more realistic I think it is that this is actually a competitive competitive baseball game tonight. So, for our free pick for Friday, I’m going to say Angels plus two because I think that’s going to be the one that you could probably get most places, but check your alternate lines, alternate run lines. A two and a half is fine if the juice is reasonable. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the Angels hang around here. Uh, lots to like on the Wager Talk site today for me. I went 3 and 0 yesterday. I’m 7-2 over the last three days. I got off to a winning start in the NFL preseason with the Raidens last night. Wireto-wire winner. Really never a sweat. Uh and I’ve got another NFL preseason pick for tonight that’s already up. Uh Major League Baseball will definitely have something. Uh and then if you’re on my all access service, then you know I add the AAA games as the lineups become available. Uh so far in AAA baseball this year, 84 64 and six uh plus 30.88 units. So, we’re having a great season there. And, um, you know, that that’s what I have up. Um, like I said, keep an eye out for MLB. I’ll likely have KBO. Triple AAA has been awesome. Off to a winning start in the NFL preseason. So, check out the long-term packages. I’ve got daily specials on the page as well. WT.Buzz. Mike Trout will never sniff the playoffs. Ever! He is washed up and should just retire and allow the organization to begin to move forward
Your breakdown makes sense but since I already took tigers -1.5 I hope you’re wrong and Hendricks gets shelled lol but angels -2 at those odds sounds good
Is Mike Trout the root of the problem??? Consider all the free agents the Angels brought in, Pujols, Hamilton, Freeze (playoff hero), Tendon, basically everybody that came to the Angels played like dog shit, maybe it's because deep down Trout is the cancer????
Tigers are really bad.
