So, I want to get into the news that kind of broke late Thursday. And it it didn’t even break. The Pelicans just sent an email being like, “Hey, we’ve signed Jaden Springer, which kind of came out of nowhere. No leaks or anything about that.” And as the Pelgans had one open roster spot, truthfully, using it on Jaden Springer is a little bit questionable in my opinion. But then Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype clarified that it is an exhibit 9 deal. An exhibit 9 deal is essentially just a training camp invite. It’s a non-g guaranteed contract for training camp. An exhibit 10 deal is basically also a training camp invite, but then you get a bonus if you end up signing with the G-League team that the Pelicans or any NBA team controls if they sign you to an exhibit 10 deal. Exhibit 9 is just essentially a training camp deal, a training camp invite that could then get converted to a, you know, a standard contract. If you don’t get waved by a certain date, it basically has a guarantee date. That’s all that is. That’s different than just being invited to training camp without, you know, the possibility of a contract. This one is a contract and they’ve got to actively wave you kind of thing. And truthfully, I expect Jaden Springer will get waved. You know, I I’m not the biggest Jaden Springer guy. You know, when you look at the players signing in free agency right now, there’s there’s very few impactful players. There can be some nice depth pieces, but Jaden Springer, who’s played four years in the league here across three different teams for his career, right, is averaging three points per game, 1.4 rebounds, eight assists, and he’s shooting from three 23.8%. Jaden Springer is an energy guy. Look, he gives you some defense. He will fight through things. He’s a hustle guy, just without all of the other stuff that you need those hustle guys to do. But he’ll hustle. Look, to bring him in in training camp, have him for preeason and have him be a menace in some of those training camp practices and things. Kind of love the sighting, truthfully. He’s going to push these guys. He feels like he can make the roster. I’d be willing to bet wants to make the roster, too, and is going to make life difficult on anyone that he goes up against in practice. So, adding him to the roster for training camp, yeah, makes like perfect sense to me. you know, this screams a Joe Dumar’s kind of player, but I don’t expect him to make the opening day roster. And in fact, I think the Pelicans having an open roster spot is maybe the smarter thing for them to do when we and we’ll do this a little bit later. We’ll start to kind of figure out what the rotation’s going to look like, who’s going to get minutes. I want to wait a little bit because I think we need to see where someone like Jeremiah Fears is going to fall into that, right? Is he or Jose Alvarado the backup point guard? And I think we’ll get a lot more clarity from that in preeason after training camp, all of that stuff. So Springer wouldn’t crack the rotation, right? Like that’s kind of what I gather from this. He’s 6’4, so it’s, you know, it’s not bad size, but it’s not incredible size there. And when you look at the other guys on this team, right? You know, who’s he going to be playing over? Looney’s going to be in the rotation. Murray, when he’s healthy, is going to be in the rotation. Pool, Zion, Trey, um, Jose Bay, Herb, Hawkins should be in there, right? Carlo, Mei, Micah, Peavey, Fierce, Queen. We we’re already getting towards like 13 14 guys here that Jaden Springer is not going to be playing over. And look, I asked our my Locked On Celtics host here on Locked On Car. He’s my co-host on Locked On. Make that your second listen today. Your Team Everyday, part of the Lockdown podcast network. Your Team Everyday. Okay, there we go. I can do my taglines properly. And you know, he was just like I asked him I was like, “Jer good?” He’s like, “No, not not really.” Like, it’s an energy guy. He’s a hustle energy guy. It’s that simple. So, he’s not going to play over anybody. So, at that point, don’t have his contract become guaranteed and then be money you have to eat. this Pelicans team is still going to look to upgrade the roster in some capacity during the regular season or if things go poorly look to trade off players and become sellers at the trade deadline just trying to get whatever they can to salvage a bad season where you don’t control your first round pick next year. Having an open roster spot to be able to take an extra player back in an unbalanced trade sending out one guy bringing back two guys or sending out two and bringing back three and then not having to wave somebody seems kind of smart here. You know, I think that, you know, this team, one, if they want to be cheap, too, not paying a guy is going to save you. They’re they’re right up against the luxury tax line. I can pull I probably should have pulled my cap sheet up ahead of time. Let me pull that up here so I have it. But I think this is just kind of like a nothing move to me. They have to the luxury tax about 4.2 million by my by my numbers here, which is going to be about what everyone else is saying. So, you know, do you need to add another 2 million to that? You know, then if it means, you know, you make a trade during the season and that brings back 3 million in salary, then you’re over the luxury tax. That doesn’t seem like a smart move in my opinion for a Jaden Springer type person. A Russell Westbrook would be a different story, but not for a Jaden Springer. So, if you’re not going to get a guy that can be more of a differencemaker than Springer is, it it’s not worth carrying someone on that roster spot right now when that person wouldn’t be playing anyway outside of, you know, massive injuries to the team, which look can happen. We certainly know that here in New Orleans, but I think keeping that roster spot open, having the more flexibility is the additional flexibility is the smarter move for the Pelicans right now as they head into an uncertain season that could go either direction. and you don’t want to have to, you know, become sellers at the trade deadline and then not be able to sell off pieces because you you’d go into the luxury tax and you’re not going to be, you know, in the luxury tax if you’re a seller or anything like that. And if you want to try and improve your team, having more flexibility to do so seems a better use of that roster spot and potential salary than signing Jaden Springer, who wouldn’t be playing over the majority of the guys on this roster, right? Springer’s not going to play over Hawkins and he shouldn’t be playing over Hawkins, right? Hawkins needs to be out there getting minutes to either grow or increase his trade value. You know, you just um you know traded for signed Micah Peavey and I think that’s someone that you want to give minutes to that’s going to kind of fill that defensive role that you would have Jaden Springer use as well. So give it to the young guy who’s cheaper and arguably has more upside than a Jaden Springer type player. And look, if they could get a Russell Westbrook, if they could get one of those type of players, right, Chris Buchet or someone like that, be a different story. But I don’t think those guys want to come to New Orleans right now. I don’t think Russell Westbrook does. Otherwise, a move like that would have happened at this point in time. So right now, I think this is going to be he’s there in training camp, gets waved, doesn’t make the roster. The Pelicans as of now go into the regular season with an open roster spot, which I think would be the smartest thing for them to do. Do you agree? Do you disagree? Do you love the Jaden Springer signing? Let me know in the comments down below on YouTube. So, coming up next, let’s put on our saratoral hats here and talk a little fashion with a leak of the city edition jerseys. Nothing’s been officially revealed just yet, but the NBA put out a teaser the other day saying like city edition jerseys coming soon. And they’re using, you know, a a number, a letter, the font from each of the jerseys that you’ve seen before, and you can clearly see which one is the Pelicans. And it’s leading us to deduce, I’ve seen a number of people put this out there, that the city edition jersey this year is going to be the city edition jersey from two years ago. They’re essentially, it looks like, reusing it in some capacity here based on leaks that I’ve seen, too. And I don’t fully know what the jersey is going to be. I I’ve been on top of some of the jersey stuff. People tend to leak that stuff to me, which is kind of cool ahead of time. Seen like concept art and other things like that that no one will ever be able to see. And this one, I I I don’t know. I haven’t gotten any confirmation on it yet, but if all the leaks are to be believed, it’s the jersey from a couple of years ago. And you might think that at it’s that black one, right? The first one that they did that had the skeleton logo on it. And you might look at that or look at this and think like that’s super lazy. They’re just reusing what they did a couple of years ago. Like that’s not fun. Maybe you already own one of those jerseys. So now you’re not going to go and buy one, which seems like a mistake on the Pelicans part if they wanted to sell more merch, which look, that’s probably something they want to do, I would imagine. So it feels a little bit disappointing that it’s a reuse of the jersey. But let me fill you in on kind of how this process works. And I’m making an educated guess here on what might have happened. This is conjecture on my part. I’m not going to state any of this as fact, but I have an idea this could be what it is, but it’s a guess and I’m going to I’m saying that upfront. You know, the jersey planning process is not something that’s done in a year. These are usually done two, three, four years down the line depending on the team and how they’re doing it. A lot of work goes into this sort of stuff. planning. You know, Nike as the jersey manufacturer has a massive say in all of this. So do the Pelicans. So do the league. They all kind of work together, you know, with whoever they hire to kind of design the jerseys. So this is not something that gets turned around in a 12-month period. You’re looking at, you know, 24 to 36 months usually when it comes to planning these out. And what I had kind of been told, you know, through off-hand remarks and conversations this last season was like we weren’t going to see the city edition colors this year. So, the black, the purple, right, that neon green, some of the gold in there, too. And you know, look, I liked the purple herring bone, literal herring bone jerseys that they used this past year. And I’d heard maybe they were going to get away from the skeleton and some of the colors and things like that, which kind of made me disappointed because these seem to have, you know, really landed with the fan base when it comes to everything. I don’t know why I just got so blurry on the camera there. There we go. Um, and so to go away from that color scheme, which people seem to really like, I’m a big fan of, and think they should just do a full-on rebranded to the skeleton and this color scheme, you know, I wonder if they had something planned that wasn’t going to be this was going to be whatever it’s going to be, and I I did not see anything. I just kind of got told like, you won’t see these colors again next year. You know, maybe they’re going to take one year off before getting back to it. or given that you’re on like a three-year planning period or a two-year planning period, maybe they planned these last two out and then this one was already in the works to be something different. This these past two were a hit with the skeleton and the color logo. So then they pivoted last minute. So if you can’t design a new jersey in that period of time, you can just bring back an old one. So rather than give, you know, not wear any sort of skeleton jersey or one of those type of color schemes, they’re just bringing one back from two years ago to kind of then get back on the train of planning these out and using this and making this kind of like almost like the official alternate or something like that. This is an educated guess knowing that whatever they were doing was already in the works and you tend I don’t know if another team has reused their city edition jerseys in a way like this. I I didn’t want to dig through all of it. I know the Suns and Jazz have kind of had similar ones, you know, I don’t know if they’re exactly the same or if they were similar. So, if you all know a little bit more, let me know in the comments down below. And, you know, I might be very uninformed in talking about this, but if you were going to just not get the skeleton, a black jersey, a purple jersey, and it was going to be something else, right? You know, maybe, you know, they did that New Orleans flag jersey one year, maybe it was going to just be a true Martyra jersey again. And they realized, let’s not do that. let’s keep this good thing going because people seem to really like it. Yeah, break out the black jerseys again, but then you’ve got to make sure you do something different, not this coming year, but the year after that. That’s going to kind of be the key thing here. And I wonder if that’s what this was was just basically like, oh no, these are already in process. If we don’t do something this year, we’re missing out because our fan base really likes it. So, we’ve got to dip back into something that we’ve done. it buys them a year time to be able to kind of get back and design the type of jerseys that they want going forward with everything. You know, I think it could be that. I don’t know for sure. Being very clear that I have not seen anything official, not been told anything official about the uniforms for next year or what the plan was or wasn’t. I could just see this being the case. And look, you know, say they that’s what’s going on here. I actually think this is like a sign of the team listening and actually a good thing. They could have just been like, “You know what? We’re going to do what we’ve done, what we’ve put money towards with the whatever the city edition jersey was going to be this year.” So on and so forth. But they’re saying, “We hear you fans, and we’re going to we’re going to at least bring back the look that you want.” And frankly, that means they’re going to sell less of them because a ton of people bought those black jerseys. I wanted to buy one and didn’t jump on in time, and I’ll definitely buy one this year, but a lot of people already did. And so if that’s going to be the case, you’re going to sell fewer jerseys. that’s less income and revenue for the team. It’s not what they want, right? Like that’s not an ideal situation for them to be in. I do think they know that the skeleton logo and the colors are a big plus for people. And as we’ve said, we talked about it a week or two ago that the team does need a little bit of a rebrand and they’ve kind of gone too long with the current uniforms, the current look. You know, even though they’ve slightly redone the blue and the white one with the wording and things like that, changing the size, it it’s more or less the same design as when they were rolled out in what is that 2013. It’s definitely time for some sort of bigger change, bigger shakeup. I wonder if this is also then maybe a test to see if you can make the black jerseys a full-time jersey if they do end up doing this sort of rebrand and things like that. We’ll see. But I do think this is them listening that the city edition jerseys were popular. The skeleton logo is popular. the black, the purple, the green, there’s gold in there, too. Seems to really be a big hit with everybody. So hopefully they know that. I think if they were using planning on using a different jersey, it’s nice that they pivoted and didn’t just try and put out something that they’re like, “Eh, whatever. We’ll do it for a year, then we can go back to it.” But in fact, just give the fans something that they want. Even though they had a terrible record, terrible record in the black jerseys two years ago. Now look, you know, when you’re not a great team, but they were good that year 49 wins and they were not good in the black jerseys. Maybe it’s not the move to bring them back just based on that and superstitions when it comes to everything. But look, I’m going to be excited to see the black out there on the court again. Hopefully they do, you know, another court design with it, which they’ve done a couple of times. I think that’s really fun with how all of that works. Allows them, if they still have that court, to reuse it, which is a nice thing. You can just bring that right on back. I think it’s all a big plus. I’m excited to see what what it is that they do. And maybe it’ll be different. Maybe it’s that but with a couple of tweaks to it. I’d be curious to see if there’s maybe some big changes, but keeping some of the original stuff there, too. Maybe there’s more of a pattern on the black than there was before. They could do a variety of different things. We’ll see. But if it’s still the black jersey, that means they’re listening to the fans and knowing that fans like this and they want to bring it back rather than just not have it at all. Do you agree? Do you disagree? Let me know what you think about the potential reuse of the City Edition jerseys from two years ago this coming season in the comments down below. So, coming up next, expansion, but not in the US. Let’s break this down because this does have a big impact on the Pelicans. So, final thing I want to talk about because I do think it’s actually very relevant is the NBA is looking to expand, but maybe not in the US. No Vegas, no Seattle. What about NBA Europe? And that’s something that we’re starting to hear a whole lot more about over the past couple of days here that the NBA is considering starting a new league in Europe, either creating new teams or bringing additional teams into the fold into kind of the Euro League and all of that or adding teams to it. And I think this is an interesting idea because this does impact the NBA in the sense that it is slowing down expansion in the US. From everything I’ve read about this in talking to some people behind the scenes, you know, this is the focus from Adam Silver. He feels there is the commissioner Adam Silver feels there is an untapped market and potential for revenue in Europe right now. They don’t drop high TV ratings, particularly here in the US, but if you had an NBA team, and they’re not going to be playing in the NBA, they would be playing in Euro Basket and other things like that, right? The European League. It would not be something where these are going to be playing NBA teams outside of a a preseason game here and there, right? But is there money to be able to tap into? And it they feel like they do. And right now, this is taking up Adam Silver and the league front offic’s time rather than focusing on expansion to Seattle or Vegas. And from what I heard was the buyin for the if you wanted to start a new team. Look, I’m a big AC Milan fan. Their owner is Redbird Capital, who’s apparently interested in putting a team in Milan as well. The buyin’s going to be 500 million. That’s 500 million that goes to the league that then just going to get split up with the NBA owners. So, if you’re NBA owners, you could make a quick easy buck by if you expand 10 teams here, right? That’s $5 billion coming back to the league to get split up amongst all owners. That seems potentially easier than a Seattle or v Vegas expansion, which while yes, you get a big check for that, dilutes the TV rights a little bit. So, this is a way for owners to make money overseas without losing their part of the pie here in the US when it comes to the NBA. Yeah, you might get, you know, a $5 billion check for one for a Seattle team that gets split up 30 ways, but then your revenue is going to be cut by, you know, whatever percentage it would be. You know, if you add two teams, you’re losing it’s, you know, that’s 32 teams splitting up the money versus 30. Your your piece of the pie gets a little bit smaller. So, why focus on expansion here when you can just get basically money for nothing without losing anything in Europe? And what this will do is going to kind of beat the drum of, you know, the Bill Simmonses and other people of like, well, then you just move teams around because they desperately want a team in Seattle and Vegas, which means the noise around the Pelicans gets higher with all this. And we talked about this a week ago where I said they’re they’re not moving. Talked to a couple people with the team. It was made very clear to me there is zero chance that this team is being sold or relocated or anything like that. So that noise is going to come. Ignore it. Gail Benson is not selling the team. They’re not relocating at all, no matter what amount of money is offered. I can like put an exclamation point on that. Uh, period, whatever you want. But the noise will get loud from this. But it also, look, put a bunch of teams in Europe, give Gail Benson more money to hopefully reinvest into the franchise to help make them more competitive with everything. You know, that’s only a good thing here. More money coming into the Pelicans means more money reinvested to the Pelicans, which could mean better equipment. All that’s only a good thing right now. I don’t it’s not my money. I don’t want to advocate for someone making money just pocketing it. As long as you’re reinvesting it into the team, I think this is a really good thing. This is a way to kind of solve that problem that, you know, expansion has the downside to it of pieces of the pie get smaller, but this doesn’t impact the pie and everyone gets paid. Maybe not as much as before, but you still get paid. It’s kind of like the win-win, I think, when it comes to the league and what they’re looking for here in terms of expansion. Also, being an AC Milan fan, having like an AC Milan like good basketball team would actually be a very cool thing, even if I wonder if they can spend the $500 million on that because they need to buy a damn striker. Besides the point, so we’re going to end locked on Pelicans there. So, I appreciate y’all so much for listening. As always, I’m your host, Jake Madison, Nola Jake on Twitter. 1. Just a suggestion….

Why not conduct 'offseason' player interviews on your show with key players (coaches, too).

*What are they doing to refine and expand their individual game?
*What are their expectations for the upcoming season?
*Who are they working out with?
*If applicable, how is their rehabilitation program going?

Jake, no disrespect, but I, for one, could care less about you playing fashion police for me. I'm much more interested in learning about the on-the-court product and not so much about the product in the Pelican's Gift Shop.
