Tampa Bay Rays vs Seattle Mariners Predictions Today | Saturday MLB Picks For 8/9/25
And it’s time for another Major League Baseball free pick right here on the Wager Talk YouTube channel. If you watch my free pick video yesterday, uh the Angels cashed against any number plus one and a half, plus two, the alternate line plus two and a half. All of them would have been winners. They led the majority of the game and lost by one to the Tigers. So that worked out. And I also cashed my 4% uh best bet with the Twins easily. Um so a nice nine and three run for me over the last four days. Uh, and I’ve got another 4% NLB up at Wager Talk for today. So, go check that out. But we’re talking about Rays Mariners. And this is one uh that’s on my kind of short list for today. Definitely one I’m considering. I’ve got a pretty clear direction uh that I’m looking in this game. And and I, you know, this is a this is later tonight, uh, 9:40 Eastern time. So, one I’ll probably keep my eye on for today. don’t really have to make a decision just yet. But again, I do have a pretty strong opinion on the Rays here. So, I want to start by talking about the Mariners for a minute because if you watch Total Bases, our show, um our daily Major League Baseball show, myself, Brian Leonard, Tokyo Brandon, 9:00 a.m. Eastern on the Wager Talk YouTube channel, uh five days a week. I talk about this Mariners team all the time. I’ve talked about them a lot this year. have taken positions on the Mariners in a couple of different ways to make the playoffs, to win their division, to win the American League, to to make it to the World Series. I was very I don’t want to say was because I still am very high on the Mariners relative to where the market had them. Okay. Uh and that’s why I’ve sort of been, you know, on the Mariners from a long-term standpoint for the last couple months because I I felt like the market had mispriced them. I felt like they were in position to go out and make a splash at the trade deadline. They did got Josh Naylor, got um uh Gino Suarez name escaped me for a second and they’ve put themselves in in great position to uh you know be in the mix in the American League and potentially win their division. My only issue with them is what the where the market has them when they play at home. So, for whatever reason, and this is this goes back three, four years, when when the Mariners play at home, they are always inflated. They’re always a pretty they’re always a bigger favorite than I think they should be. And the reason I have a tough time with that is not because I don’t think the Mariners are a very good team, but their lineup is very much built like their offense is very much built on hitting the ball out of the ballpark. Uh they are they are a home run reliant team when it comes to offense and T-Mobile Park is a very difficult ballpark to score runs in. So you know right there off the bat you have two things working against you if you want to play the Mariners at home. The first thing is the fact that the books kind of have this like I think a little bit of a misconception of like um them having a big home field advantage and then the second thing is the ballpark that they play in T-Mobile Park. it is not the best park for the way they have their team set up right now. Um, so that makes them a little bit tougher to play at home. Then to take it a step further, the pitching match up tonight, you’re going to have Logan Evans against Joe Bole. So I’ll start with Logan Evans because this is a guy that got very hyped up coming into the season. And I couldn’t figure out why. So, every year uh before the season, MLB.com uh puts some stuff out early in the season on AAA minor league players, players to players that they expect to metriculate to the big leagues and potentially make an impact. Um, and I’m always very interested in that in that stuff. I I read that I wait for it to come out. I kind of follow it through the offseason to get an idea. And for me, it’s so I can get an idea of who I should be looking at at AAA uh as I because I bet AAA just as much as I bet Major League Baseball. And so for that that stuff for me gives me a good idea of like how I should set up my AAA power ratings. And the the most glaring sort of the thing that that struck me coming into this season was how highly rated a lot of these places has had a lot of these places had Logan Evans. Uh because I just didn’t see it. I had him rated far lower. Uh but they really hyped him up in publications and then the Mariners. I don’t know if the Mariners kind of bought into this hype. I mean, he was a guy, he was only a 12th rounder a couple years ago, kind of shot up through the minor leagues quickly, but I watched him pitch at AAA and I guess for me, I just didn’t really see it. Uh, you know, couple things happen. Bryce Miller gets hurt. Suddenly Emerson Hancock gets crushed and suddenly there’s this rotation spot open and they go to Evans. And I got to be honest, I I still I don’t see it at the big league level either. You know, his numbers are not terrible. 4.30 RA 1.4 41 whip in 13 starts, that’s not awful. But the fact that like I don’t know, I guess it’s just the eye test and and watching him at the big league level, I I don’t think he would still be in this rotation had other stuff happened. Meaning um Hancock, you know, if he had figured it out more at AAA um or if uh if Miller could get himself back into the mix. He’s right now he’s rehabbing down at AAA. So, you know, I look at the underlying metrics for a guy like Evans, and it’s just that there’s there’s not much to to love. Like, I guess the one thing I’ll give him credit for is he has six pitches, and he he’s near the zone with all of them. So, you know, that that can be tough. You got you’ve got a guy that throws a pitch mix, six different pitches, throwing them all more than 10% of the time. So, they he really doesn’t have a pitch that he never throws, right? like he’s going to mix all six pitches in and they’re all near the zone. So, that can confuse some teams. But the but the problem is, you know, he doesn’t have a great fast ball. So, you you’ve got teams that are that are more than willing to just kind of like spit on the junk pitches and wait for his fast ball, which to me like, you know, like that cutter a lot of times leaks out over the plate. So, that’s what he’s throwing the majority of time. He throws a cut fast ball more than the like the traditional force seamer, but it’s always out over the plate. And and to me that that’s that’s not that difficult for big league hitters to to figure out. And so he’s been a guy of kind of look to fade when the spot comes. Even though I don’t really want to fade the Mariners, uh because I do really like this team, Evans is a guy that I’m willing to fade. And they happen to run into a guy in Joe Bole that has been tremendous. And you know, he now he’s a perfect example of he hasn’t been at he hasn’t had as much time this year at the big leagues, spent the majority of the first half down in Durham, but he’s when he gets his chance, he’s been fantastic. Um, three starts, seven appearances for the Rays, uh, an a 2.30 RA, a whip 0.88, his whip is under one, and he was doing all of this stuff for Durham. um was one of I one of the high one of the pitchers I had for starting pitching AAA. Uh I had him rated just as high as any pitcher this season when he was down in AAA and now he’s finally kind of getting a chance to do that at the big league level. I felt like he deserved the chance sooner this year. There was a scenario where he came up through a great outing and he got sent back down. It’s just kind of the nature of the beast. part of the reason that I think the Rays have been a little bit sort of tentative to to commit to him as a starter. He really is a two- pitch guy. He’s a fast ball slider guy and and so the you know the the the old adage is you know for lack of a better term you know you you got to have you can’t you two pitch guys are relievers in the big leagues not starters and so I think that’s the reason that you know he’s sort of been able to dominate at AAA but the Rays have been tentative to sort of put him out there as a starter in the big leagues because he really only has two pitches and I think the thought process is well the league is going to figure that out Well, league hasn’t figured it out yet and you know, maybe maybe that’ll happen at some point, but I still don’t think the league and certainly not the Mariners have had enough exposure to make to to to for that to be the case. So, even though I know Bole’s going to come in here and probably throw mostly fast ball slider, he’s throwing 98 99 miles an hour, I I don’t know that the um you know, I don’t know that the Mariners just come in and they’ve got a great beat on that today because he’s got a nice slider and he’s throwing a 90, you know, 98 mph fast ball in a park that it’s like, yeah, he doesn’t get a ton of ground balls, but you know what? He’s at T-Mobile Park, so that’s fine, too. We’ll take fly balls at T-Mobile Park. It’s one of the hardest ballparks to hit the ball out of in the league. So, at the current price, I think there’s a lot of value on the race. I think this is a great matchup for the race. Um, and then you talk about getting plus 125, plus 125, uh, between, we’ll call it between plus 120 and plus 130. Obviously, shop around. Um, that’s a that’s a a good value sort of spot for the Rays in a game that I make far closer to a coin flip. And you know, the Rays lost a close one last night, but they’ve got bullpen arms and their bullpen’s been very good. So, I like Boille. I like the Rays here. I think the price is a gift. Plus 125, plus 130. Shouldn’t be getting that type of value. This is a very even matchup where I think the Rays have a better pitcher. Uh so, that’ll be my free play for the for today. Raise money line plus 125. If you’re looking for client plays, um back-to-back MLB 4% winners. Uh I’m nine and three so far this week overall. 2 and 0 start to the NFL preseason. So, a great time. We have a really good threemonth special up on the page at Wager Talk right now. Um, that gets you everything August, September, October, and we throw in a month for free.
