A year ago this weekend, it was the day of the final preseason game. Dumps it off short. Was looking for the end zone, but had to go short instead to Scoon Maker to the 5 yd line. This is a 23 y for the new dad. He showed that daddy’s strength last week with the 66-y joined the team in Oxnard and then rolled double sixes from 66 yds in Vegas in honor of Colton last Saturday night. How about that? Called him like Dak Prescott did last week for Will Greer. Little endound action for the Chargers and running room. Down the sideline goes Darius Davis, the TCU Horn Frog. Maris Bell in pursuit. And Darius Davis all the way to the end zone. 65 yds. There’s comes out to the 30 now issues last week against the Raiders in coverage, punt coverage. Lance, a covered receiver. Dean Leonard is all over Kiran Billy Johnson. And in fact, he was all over him too much. The flag comes in. Pass interference. Defense number 33. The ball he placed at the spot of the foul. So from the 34 yd line, sixth first down for the Cowboys. And there some running room again for Vaughn up near the 40 yd line. Brock Hoffman is playing center for the Cowboys. It’s good news for Cooper BB. Anticipated he’ll be the starting center on opening day. That’s big Princeton Fent. That’s a big dude to bring down there. Bill positive yardage but 11 yardds and a first down at the 45 yd line. And getting to the outside Malik Davis but he is brought down. Shane Lee comes in to make the stop. Holding offense number 79. That’s a 10- yd penalty. Still first down. Alongside WLET at right guard is TJ Bass. A first and 20 and almost picked off. Jordan Phillips in there again and hit in the back field immediately by Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Spiller in the last week to 10 days. Lawson with the pressure. stick gets away and it goes incomplete with Andrew Booth defending is just showing up again today on film. That seems to be a good pickup for the Dallas Cowboys in that trade with Minnesota. JK Scott the punter for the Chargers and hit immediately is Tyron Billy Johnson. That means that he’s going to have big plans for him when the regular season starts and Trey Lance goes down. And that was Tony Jefferson coming on the blitz. The veteran safety Tony Jefferson out of Oklahoma 20 years and Tony c gave him a call said I think I still got something in me and he showed it right there. Trey Lance short pickup and Harbaugh hired be the head coach. Jesse Mentor was his DC at Michigan and a short pass to about the 35 yd line and he needs to show up in a major way today and prove to Linda Wells tight end’s position coach for the Cowboys that he can make some plays. Of course, Jake Ferguson is the starter and the breakout season last year. Darius Davis now from inside the 10yd line and he is swarmed under at the 10 yd line from the 11 yd line. pick up of seven yardds out to the 18 yd line. Can you do in terms of taking care of your responsibilities offensively, defensively, but what value can present on special teams? Jet sweep action this time and Isaiah Wooden is brought down. That was not a difficult one. And hit in the back field before he got to the line again. Maris Bell coming on the run blitz. Much deserved for Jordan Lewis. What a season he had last year coming back from that Liz Frank injury. Wide open is Semi Foko behind the Cowboys secondary and down the sideline he goes. He beat Andrew Booth all the way to the end zone and on the first play of the second quarter the Chargers with the deep ball right down here. He goes Cowboys drafted Simmy Foko in the fifth round three years ago in 2021. Cameron Dicker with the point after Booth out of Clemson, a second round draft pick a couple of years ago of the Vikings. And on the return, Deuce Vaughn making some guys miss and gets out near the 25 yd line with penalty markers over the place. Number six at the 18 yd line, half the distance. They’re going to need him even more so now that Don Bland is out for at least six to eight weeks. All right, thanks Kyle. And there’s a late flag coming in after the short gain. Pving defense number 91. That penalty’s 5 yds from the end of the run. Automatic first down. The league with nine interceptions. is rolling out his lance and a short pickup puts the world on notice and go ahead and go ahead and secure that allp pro. This dude is Mr. Consistency. They I don’t know that they understood what they had when they picked him up, but now they do and he’s going to be sorely missed for these guys to hit on the hit the field at the same time and you know just want to wish him a quick recovery. And as uh there’s running room for Freeman past the 40, he still wants to go. But the big fellas are taking care of business up front. Got double teams going at the line of scrimmage. Good job by TJ Bass is letting off. Don’t get the holding call. And Royce Freeman is always going to get downhill. That’s not the man you want to see in the hole. Nice pick up for Freeman on that play. Lenoy here. Elliot and Rico who are both physical running backs. They they both get downhill. They both want to run somebody over. And Royce Freeman is really the same style of back like a sorry Deuce Vaughn. Lance fires right side and it’s Tony Jefferson coming up with it down the sideline once again. Tony Jefferson making a play for the Chargers with the Chargers in position at the 38 yd line. Eastston stick with the handoff to Jared Patterson. They will run behind him with Jared Patterson again. Gets up near the sticks with big guys up front. Linebackers can go run and make plays. Jared Patterson again has running room inside the 20 down near the 17 yd line. Two guys blocking two of your players. That’s four guys being taken up. Your linebackers can roam free and make make plays. Stick throws incomplete. And you also have uh Denzel Dax who’s in there as well who was assigned as a free agent. Patterson works the right side. Buddy Johnson in on the stop. Well, now Maris Bell is playing safety which is his natural position. And Maris Bell had a terrific season for the Cowboys. East Stick has the first down all the way down to the two yd line now in position. fade left corner goes incomplete. Eric Scott defending. They didn’t hold the ball and the Cowboys had a late substitution for goal line as well and that’s what led to the ultimate timeout. And the Cowboys after the timeout able to make the stop for no gain. Isaiah Spiller, the Texas Aggie brought down. Third and goal. Looking left. Ball batted down. Buddy Johnson back home playing for his hometown team out of Dallas Kimble High School and looking very impressive this preseason. I don’t believe across the league we have had a dynamic kickoff return for a touchdown. San Francisco had one that was close last night inside the 5yd line I think and this one will not be either. Malik Davis with the return. All right, Brock Hoffman started at center. Cooper BB not playing some running room behind the inside blockers there for Dvon but Trey Lance does not get that luxury here in the preseason. A clean exchange from center with you saying all that I just knew we were going to have a fumble. I was hoping not. Dakota Shepley a native of Canada Windsor Ontario went to British Columbia to college and there’s a first down. Three straight carries from Dvon. Move the sticks. undrafted guy last year out of Oregon. Finding some running room. Royce Freeman. Back to the NFL through the USFL playing for the Birmingham Stallions. Too tall for the 55 Don. able to elude a couple of men and gets a first down. That’s what Trey Lance can do right there. He’s trying to find a way down the field and uses his legs to get a a first down. He ran for well over 100 yardds in that game, a national championship win. Royce Freeman for a third round draft pick of the Broncos picks up three. Third and five. And there’s that athleticism. Gets a first down. Vaughn hit hard. He gets to the line of scrimmage. And a lot of options for Trey Lance here, but they’re going to choose to hand it off. And there goes Deuce inside the 20. Nice run brought down by Jefferson and then you’re going to tack on some more yards as a penalty marker comes in. It’s like a face mask. A tar game. Press the penalty. How good is the goal? An automatic first down. Do you want to score a touchdown immediately or do you want to take some time off the clock? Uh you don’t want to sack. You do not want to sack. We got one-on-one at the on the left side of your screen. One left side of your screen. And there it is. Ryan Fenoy. It wasn’t the right side, it was the left side this time. And the rookie out of Southeast Missouri State one-on-one, baby. Harbaugh on the Chargers annoyed by Ryan Fenoy right there. And Brandon Aubrey with the extra point. The stage is set for another 74 yds in 13 plays. It was Trey Lance to Ryan Fenoy. Ford is the best in Texas. Even the improvement on the fage. Remember in week one against the Rams who overthrew the fade in the end zone on the left side. Ball goes incomplete. Excuse one timeout and keep one in your hip pocket to use like you did a week ago. Easton stick over the middle but there it goes out of the hands again of Jaylen Johnson goes incomplete. A second timeout for the Cowboys there. Force an errant pass. Bringing the linebacker up the middle bringing Maris Bell as well. Flushed out. stick throws down field and a ball batted away by Israel Muamu looking for Jaylen Gil. Now your offense gets the ball back with almost a minute and a half left on the clock and a pocket full of timeouts in their hand. Iron Billy Johnson from his own 12 yd line straight up field for about a 15 yd return. Cowboys will take over on offense. Freeman to be here in a twominute offense situation. He gets the ball as well. There’s Freeman for a pick up of about seven yardds. Want to get the ball snapped. Get on the other side of the 50 yd line and over the middle John Stevens Jr. inside the 40. Ball comes out and the Chargers have it. That’s not what you want to see. John Stevens Jr. plays all over the field again. Now East Sticks got an opportunity with 50 seconds left going deep downfield. Andrew Booth with the coverage on Jerry Rice’s son, Brendan Rice. Sticks going to run it this time and get the first down inside Dallas into the field. deep over the middle and off the hands of a Dallas defender and that’s Willie Harvey. Second straight week Willie Harvey almost had an interception. He almost had a pick six against Gardenner Mshu last week. Stick going deep right side and it goes incomplete looking for Cornelius Johnson the rookie out of Michigan. Guany Thomas not playing. had a groin injury earlier in the week in practice. And there’s a completion to Cornelius Johnson and Julius Wood lays the lumber even since they reported to Oxnard. Stick going deep right side wide or Brendan Rice with Josh Butler all over him. 35 yd line. It’s Johnson knocked out of bounds. And you want to see your defensive backs back up a little bit as well, your corners. Throws that into the stands basically with 7 seconds left. 48 yd field goal. Well, he had been very consistent in his career, much like Brandon Aubrey for the Cowboys. Well, this is where you would kick it out of the end zone, right? Cameron Dickerson in it out of the end zone. Come on. This the preseason. Let’s see some returns. Come on. trailing by 10, but it’s victory formation to end the half. So, there you go. That does it for the first half here. Regardless of where you’re drafted, this dude hasn’t played a lot of ball, but guess what? He’s getting more reps in this preseason than he’s gotten in his entire NFL career. Chargers returning the second half kickoff. That’s Jaylen Gil. So, Easton Stick still in there at quarterback for the Chargers. as our battle of two North Dakota state quarterbacks continues. Recall his rookie year that running down I think it was Darien Connor of the New Orleans Saints from behind. That’s where he first made his mark. What a career he had with the Cowboys. Not much up the middle. Elijah Dodson, the ball carrier out of Sacramento State. 63305 in Huggin. Stick with time to throw. Elijah Dodson. It’s away from Eric Scott. Brought down. Damen Wilson in on the stop. He’s going to go out there every time he touches that field. You can show up. He’s going to show up and make some plays. Of course, it was originally a fourth round draft pick of the Cowboys and was out of football for a year. Now making a comeback and making an impression with the Cowboys. Offense 66 5 yd penalty. Third down. Danny Short getting reps as the referee here. Next man up works for the referees, too, huh? That’s exactly right. Stick over the middle. Cornelius Johnson has a first down. Cowboys might get bailed out once again here by stick at the line. Offsides defense 92. Penalty declined. First down. Some opportunities. They haven’t necessarily taken advantage of those opportunities, but they did there. And there’s an opportunity right there. And for the second time this preeason, the undrafted rookie out of East Carolina, Julius Wood, has the interception. Standback spotted on the practice field. Everybody doing their job. You have big paydays on complete defense. Skyam brought to you by Lenovo. Smarter technology for all. the double tip drill. New receivers out there for him as well. Whole new set of receivers. Getting past the 35 yd line. Set up the third and about four. And he’ll run for it. Gets the first down and then some. A whole lot of some down inside the 35 yd line with a flag down. Holding offense number 34. 10 yd penalty from the spot of the foul. Still third down. Got to let the man go whenever you lose leverage. Oh, and there’s a fumbled snap. Wild scramble for it at the 40 yd line. We just talked about that. How much change is Trey Lance going through? Three different back find himself in a bad situation just like Tre Lance did there. Second and 12 and a mix up looking for Cam Johnson over there. Okay, we’ll try that during the break here. Down the middle there’s a flag down. The catch made by John Stevens Jr. would be enough for a first down. Illegal contact. Defense number 37. Penalties declined. First down. And fallen forward for a first down. So from the 47 yd line, Kelvin Harmon with another first down. Cowboys moving the football here. And there’s Royce Freeman. Not much there. Rolling left going downfield has his man Deontay Bernett down near the 10 yd line. A former Arlington Renegade of the United Football League. We’re going to go back and take a peek at this. Okay, Trey lands right in the middle of your screen. Okay, let’s Boom. There he is. We’re going to come out on the play action. Boom. Play action. Now I got to get my eyes around right there. He’s trying to get his hips squared around. You guys see him? He does a good job of getting his shoulders square, his hips turned. Here’s Malik Davis. He gets about five laden across the field and usually ends up an interception. Now second and five at the six and the ball is picked off by Tony Jefferson again. Out of the end zone goes Jefferson to the 12 yd line. McCarthy with a quick word on the sideline as you see never saw Tony Jefferson. Man right there. You don’t want to try to force something. The Cowboys with a sack. Have to take the play. Settle it out the back of the end zone. But good thing you have a defensive line that has your back because the big boys up front are working. Already getting back there for a big eligible receiver. And all the way back to the two yd line. Second and 19 on their own end zone. And coming up making a stop at the two yd line. There’s Julius Wood again. from the three yd line. East stick well short of where they needed to get out. He’s out to the 14 yd line for a pickup of 11. We know Kavonte Turpin is the allp pro return man for the Dallas Cowboys, but he needs to show that he can be an asset in this pass as well and makes the fair catch at the 43 yd line. Royce Freeman behind him in the back field and to give this to Freeman and he is hit in the back field and dropped. Let’s go down to the sideline and Kyleman’s. So you’re not like hesitant or you’re trying to think during the season. So we’ve seen a lot of big jumps and I think that’s the most important thing. Me and him were just practicing going over play calls at practice. He was like I was like maybe you should call this. He was like no they’re going to come out in 3×1. I was like are you sure? And sure enough they came out 3×1. He was like you just got to understand the tendencies and things like that. So it’s a kind of great honor to be a veteran. You know, people usually don’t last and people don’t usually start so well, but you know, I think that’s what make the great ones, consistency, and I just want to be as consistent as possible. Always finding new ways to find pain and when you feel it out here, it’s almost nothing and it’s like you’ve been there before. So, um, so interesting and so much fun. Trey Lance taking off for a touchdown sideline. Michael, we’ll let you go. Appreciate you taking some time. Yes, sir. And how about Trey Lance getting free down the sideline? 46 yds for the touchdown. Let’s go ahead and take a look right here in the middle of your screen. Boom. Seal block on the edge. Working up to the next level. Oh, put your foot in the ground now. Just use your godgiven talents. The speed is tough to come by. He’s excited. Feels good. Look at him. Just look at him. You can’t catch me. Need more people. A little spin. Nice little spin around there. Okay. Yeah. You like that? Come on, Cowboys. and going for the corner of the end zone, but it goes incomplete. Looking for Cam Johnson, now has nine carries for 83 yards in this game. Deuce Vaughn, by the way, nine carries, 53 yards. So once again, Trey Lance, the leading rusher comes out comes out of him on the field. We love to see it. He’s trying to keep it all harnessed in right now here in a few weeks. Chargers continue to go with Eastston stick at quarterback and he’s in trouble and he is dropped. Whole bunch of Cowboys in there on that one. Tyresese Wheat was in there. Everybody was in there. Boom. Mike Vigil coming up there taking a running back. Harris comes off on a delayed what we call green dog. Green dog is when the running back goes up to make a block on one of your one of your teammates. Then you know there’s nobody responsible for you. I’ve seen, you know, you see half sacks. Well, that was a a third of a sack for everybody. And there’s a tackle for loss again. That’s Darius Harris again. He had the first hit on the sack. He just want to make sure that you knew that that was not a one-time thing there, Bill. He’s going to run it down from the backside. I told you this this linebacker room has a lot of talent. Fourth year out of Middle Tennessee State, Darius Harris. Patterson knocked out of bounds. Injuries occur like in the case of the Sam Williams injury and then you go get you some veteran edge rushers and got him some linebackers too. Had been bothered by some injuries as well. Ball goes on into the end zone. There’s movement before the snap. Looked like Princeton F. for an opportunity to find themselves with a star on their helmet for the 2024 season. There’s Luke Connor. Pick up of about four right there. We’re not in football at the outset of this year. Like 85 out of the 90 players found a spot somewhere on the Cowboys roster or another roster last season. A really good throw by Trey Lance. Had an opportunity. Ran a nice little stem corner route. Okay, take it in. take it back up and he good ball location. Good grab. Mike is going no huddle too. Snoop Connor on the carry a little tempo. So the scouting department has a lot of work to do in terms of scouring for their last little holes they want to fill. How about that? Got the first down inside the 45 yd line. through all these different changes in the offensive line and throwing good balls. And he loses the rush this time. Little fake and got back to the line of scrimmage. Anyway, even amongst a lot of pressure again when you’re rotating through different offensive line tend to get a lot of pressure in your face. And down inside the 40 yd line, Cam Johnson holding 79 offense, 10 yd penalty. Repeat second down. Tyler Gayton, your starter at left tackle and Terrence Steel at right tackle. It’s Cam Johnson down inside the 40. Had to be pulled away. Lance going deep down the right side. Oh, mercur off the hands of Deontay Bernett. Princeton F. Got that first down. Now Snoop Connor picks up eight or nine yardds. veteran out of miss. Toss left. Cutting up field for the first down to the 20 yd line goes the rookie out of Missouri who started his collegiate career at Stanford. That’s Nathaniel Pete. What Dak did last year with Will Greer the quarterback. Dak called plays last year in this last preseason game. So the bar was set high. Lance using his feet. Bring up a third and short. He’s getting them tonight. Only 318 pass attempts in college at North Dakota State. Nowhere for Cam Johnson to run the rookie out of Northwestern. 33 yd field goal. This is an extra point and it is good. back-to-back home games week two and three against the Saints and then Lamar Jackson and the Ravens as the dynamic kickoff is taken eight yardds deep in the end zone. He is the beneficiary of this new Mike Zimmer defense where if you’re where you’re supposed to be the ball just falls in your lap. Eastston stick with the completion a pickup of about eight yardds. And let’s go down to the sideline and Kyleman’s it seems like there’s a lot of confidence in the passing game as a whole. Does that start with Dak? Does it start with the play caller? Is it a little bit of everything? Challenge ourselves to grow each and every day no matter what it may be. Now it feels like just yesterday you were fighting for snaps. You were fighting for the depth chart and now we’re getting an opportunity. Got Flo who’s been making plays keep coming each and every day just continuing to get better. You got Crop, you know, you got a handful of guys that just keep keep chipping away. They keep building. Find a way to get 1% better every day. Uh and I keep I always tell myself, be one of one. Whatever I can do to be one of one, do it. And uh my goal for this this season wants to take that defensive player of the game award away from Julius Wood. Apparently the way he’s played. He heard you. Uh-huh. And calling for the fair catch at the 8 yd line is Jaylen Craropper. Starting at his own 8 yd line. Not much running room. The Cowboys start this drive, Isaiah, 92 yds away from the end zone, but down one point. There we penalty added to the end of the run. Automatic first down. I saying this is situational football for both of these coaches right now. They want to see what their team can come out with. One deep down the sideline again. This time looking for Cam Johnson. He he kicked a 66 y last week. So, I think they’re in field goal range once they get past the 50. It’s been proven. It’s a proven fact. It is proven. The plan is to kick the field goal for the victory with no time left on the clock. There you go. You got to convert here on third and four. Uh-oh. Intercepted and headed the other way into the end zone for the touchdown. And that is Traymond Morris Brash with the pick six. Trayon Brash comes up with the interception. Trey Lance is looking to his right and stays looking at his right. The defensive end drops out. Good defensive play call by Jim Harbaugh there as a quarterback. He just happens to be right there in the throwing lane. He must have been on the judge machine as well cuz he caught that thing right from Trey Land. Traymond Morris Brash will keep that football with the penalty down right on the goal line. Jared Patterson hit in the back field and he is dropped. Damen Wilson, one of the first Cowboys to hit a improvement that they made and the additions to the roster and so forth. They made tremendous strides and shout out to this entire front office. Will Mcclelay and his entire scouting department at quarterback and you look at it as a wideopen race. It’s going to be a very competitive interce this year. No doubt about it. The Cowboys are always taking care of business and putting themselves at the top of that list, but it’s not going to be easy. Not by any means. Trey Lance and the Cowboys down a touchdown. Tre Lance gets out of bounds. Has the first down. Using his feet again. Jerry Jones did say this week that uh Tre Lance will be on the 53, but he wanted to see more of him. He’s getting an opportunity in this game to do that. Reban Span Ford, the tight end out of Minnesota with the and what he can bring to the table. Again, just another one of those guys who hasn’t had opportunity to show what he’s capable of in these games. Short completion there. Down to around 220 to play now. Third down play under pressure. Fires down field. 50/50 ball and the Chargers come up with it. And that is Matt Henkins out of Iowa and Flowermound Marcus High School. You don’t want to give Tre Lance opportunity to use his legs. So they bring pressure. Trey gives his man Cam Johnson a chance. He puts the ball right on his forehead. He just gets out wrestled for the ball. That’s a tough stretch right there. Very tough stretch. Really need to get off to a strong start. And Detroit doesn’t feel any type of way about coming back here, do they? No. No. Why would they have idiots? Cross left Jared Patterson. Cowboys have him coralled. Big hit there. Eastston stick has gone all the way at quarterback and deep downfield looking for Cornelius Johnson. Cowboys also coughed it up on a fumble. Bill, he can come out on this drive and totally redeem himself. Not over from the 10 yd line. Fair catch called for by Duce Vaughn. You have to use your legs. Use your legs. And there’s Brevin Span forward right up at the 20 yd line. And Cam Johnson out of bounds. He’s capable of converting on these as well. And over the middle, Brevin Span ford. That’s a first down. Hold on to the football. 44 yd line. I told you that’s a big dude, Bill. That’s a big man right there. And there’s nobody coming to get you to give you a breath from the sideline unless you get incomplete. Goes incomplete. Let’s go down to the sideline and Kyleman’s. Kyle Isaiah Standback said he he looked at me and said he’s winning it too. So get the next playoff. Third and three over the middle and Alec Holler moved the chains again from the 34 yd line. It’s in trouble. Gets away now. He’ll throw it downfield and it’s complete inbounds. 11 10 and spike it at 7 seconds left. They’re going to back up and let these guys run off the line of scrimmage. Quickly down towards the end zone and it’s picked off in the end zone and he had his man level. It’s your man right here that you look. He’s going to try to run right across the middle here and the hole is right there. That’s the hole. Just a bad ball by Trey Lance. They had it mathe. Had the right route against the right coverage. Bad execution. That’ll do it. The Chargers walk away with a win 26-19. Mike McCarthy and Jim Harbaugh shake hands at midfield.
