🚨NEW Quentin Grimes Update From NBA Insider Jake Fischer! Philadelphia 76ers News & Rumors

Another Quinton Grimes update as the saga continues. Quinton Grimes remains unsigned with the 76ers as the two sides look to try to come to some kind of an agreement, but Jake Fischer says that might not happen at all. There is some buzz Quinton Grimes could sign the $ 8.7 million qualifying offer and play out the year on that one-year deal instead of coming to terms on a contract with Philadelphia. Could this actually happen? What are the implications if Grimes does sign the qualifying offer? We’re breaking it all down right here on 76ers. Now, real quick before we get into it, today is Saturday, August 9th, 9 days into the month of August. And taking a look at our updated August subscriber battle between us here at 76ers now and the Miami Heat Report. A slight lead for us right now. 35 subs to 29 subs for the Heat Report. It’s not nearly a large enough lead though. We got to pump those numbers up, baby. We lost in July to the Heat Report. I want to win in August. So, you’re looking for somewhere to get Sixers news, rumors, and a whole lot more every single day, all year round. I encourage you to hit that sub button. So, what is the qualifying offer? Right? We’ve talked about it at times here before on the show, but I’ve seen the comments. A lot of you don’t really fully understand what this qualifying offer means, and if Grimes does sign the qualifying offer, what that means for him and for the Sixers. But basically, to put it simply, the qualifying offer is kind of just a one-year contract that teams give restricted free agents that enables them to match salaries, right? So, when you see a restricted free agent, the reason he’s restricted is the team gave him that qualifying offer. The number based on previous contract draft position, a little bit different for different guys. Quinton Grimes’ number is $8.7 million, but it acts as sort of a one-year deal where if the teams don’t come to an agreement, that is Grimes’s contract essentially for one year for the season. And there’s a lot of implications with signing that contract. It’s not just a one-year deal and you can figure things out later. There’s some specifics to it, right? Derek Bodner covers the Sixers, PHY Sports, does a great job. Expend on this a little bit. Thought it was a good breakdown. So, I don’t think it’s in Grimes’s best interest to take the qualifying offer. But one thing to remember is if he does take that qualifying offer, he a automatically gets a no trade clause and b if he waves that no trade clause and is then traded, the acquiring team does not get bird rights for him. So, they couldn’t go over the salary cap to resign Grimes. Anyways, by taking the qualifying offer for Grimes, you are turning down a significant guarantee if the Sixers are offering a multi-year deal. Obviously, you’re turning down years and money, killing any incentive per for a preferred destination to trade for you in season because why is someone who wants you on the squad going to trade for you when you’re on that qualifying offer knowing one, it’s a one-year deal. They can go after you the next year and they don’t have the bird rights on you anyways. It just doesn’t make any sense for a team that wants to acquire that player. also decreasing incentive for the Sixers to play you and thus potentially impacting your leverage as a UFA next summer. So although Grimes might say, “Look, I want to decline or take the qualifying offer, try to get a bigger deal next off season,” I think it doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense for him to do that, especially if Philadelphia is offering him a multi-year deal, even if it’s not at the ridiculous 20 plus million dollars that he was requesting earlier in the offseason. I think this report here from Fiser saying that there’s some buzz. Grimes could take the offer kind of feels like it’s coming from his agent trying to put a little bit of pressure on the Sixers to get a deal done here to push things along. You know, trying to scare Philadelphia saying, you know what, yeah, we don’t like these offers. We might take this qualifying offer. I really don’t think he would end up doing that though, which doesn’t make a lot of sense with his situation in particular. Plus the Sixers, I feel like they would want him back. And even if they’re not giving him $20 million. If you’re Grimes, you wouldn’t take 15 a year for the next three seasons. Clearly, Philadelphia right now is just not meeting the demands of Quinton Grimes. And there’s no reason to, right? No other teams have the money to offer Grimes a big contract. The Sixers are essentially bidding against themselves, and that’s really it. So why fork over even 18, 20, you know, $60 million when you can stay firm at your number, whatever that number is. Maybe it’s 14, 15, maybe even less. We don’t really know what their exact evaluation is right now. But there’s just no reason to go to that high of a number despite the production he did have at the end of the season. But they are in a tough spot, right? Because for the Sixers in particular with this Grimes scenario, you don’t want to lose him because you lost Gershon Yabasel in order to free up the money to sign Quinton Grimes. And so if you don’t, then you lost both of them. And it’s it’s a complete disaster really. And it’s a tough spot too because what’s his real value, right? What’s his real market given the player he spent his entire career and then the player he was in those 28 games at Philadelphia where he looked really, really good. And yeah, he was taking a bunch of shots and they were losing a bunch of games, but he was efficient in doing so. You just don’t know what level of player he’s going to be moving forward. I think he can still be a really good player and start on this team, but not 21 plus million dollars worth right As I mentioned, losing Grimes would make losing Yabicelli even worse because the only reason you let Yabellle walk to New York is so that you could pay Quinton Grimes. So, if Grimes does end up taking the qualifying offer and then leaves or whatever ends up happening, they trade him like it would just be a disaster. So, they do have a little bit of pressure to get a deal done here with Quinton Grimes. And look, I think he really does round out this guard rotation. I know Sixers fans are saying, “We don’t even need Grimes. We got all these guards.” Look, I think you can run a lot of three guard lineups. Maybe not with Maxi and McCain on the floor at the same time, but with the perimeter defense VJ Edgecomb brings, the perimeter defense Quinton Grimes brings. Like, I don’t want to see Kyle Lowry or Eric Gordon out there on the floor, right? So, that four guard rotation, Maxi McCain, Edgecom, Grimes, and again, you can do some three guard lineups, all guys that can operate with the ball in their hands, operate off the ball, they play good defense, right? So, I think it should be a priority to get this deal done, but not so much of a priority that you’re forking up 20 plus million dollars just because that’s what Quinton Grimes wants and they’re threatening to sign this qualifying offer when it really does not make sense for Quinton Grimes. It’s not like he’s had this big mark and teams are lining up to make a move for him, right? He had his time in Philadelphia where he put up those big numbers and he deserves a little bit of a pay raise, but at the same time, you know, you don’t want to go overboard, so commit to it. you know, three-year deal, 16 a year. I, you know, somewhere in that 14 16 range, I think could be fair. Um, hopefully they come to us a a resolution sooner rather than later. But we also heard reports that this could go into September, even October. Like, we we don’t really know at this point in time. Predictive for me. Will Quinton Grimes end up signing the qualifying offer? You need Y for yes, N for no? I don’t think he will. So, I’m typing my N for no, but of course, let me know your thoughts down in the comments. Couple more pieces of news to get to here on today’s show, but really quick before we do, an insane deal I want you guys to be able to take advantage of on this Philadelphia 76ers cut off hoodie. But again, limited time only. take advantage while you still can. chatsports.com/s6ershoodie. So, a couple things to get to. The Sixers preseason schedule is starting to come out. We know three confirmed games that Philadelphia will be playing in the preseason. Of course, they play two games against the Knicks in Abu Dhabi October 2nd, October 4th. So, their training camp actually starts a little bit earlier than a lot of other teams because they are going and playing overseas, but they will play those two games there against the Knicks. And then very recently, we got a confirmed game against the Minnesota uh Timberwolves on October 17th. That one at the Wells Fargo Center as well. We’ll keep updating you guys when we get more and more information on some of these preeason games. And some great news here for Philadelphia 76ers fans. We’ve been waiting for it. There’s been rumors that have been flying around. When is Philadelphia going to bring back the iconic black jerseys from the Allen Iverson era? And it seems like now the Sixers were kind of thinking, you know, we’re not in good standings with the fans right now. We know all this is going on. So, let’s try to do something right at least. And they are bringing back these fresh iconic black jerseys. We don’t have too much details right now on when exactly they’ll be coming back, when they’ll be wearing them, if they’ll be the exact same design here. Don’t have all that information, but we do know they will be coming back in some shape or form. And that does get me excited, man, because these jerseys are sweet. And some of the Sixers city edition jerseys and alternate jerseys from the past five plus years really haven’t been great. Some of them are okay, some of them not. So hopefully they can make that maybe even a mainstay in their jersey rotation. If you’re excited for those black jerseys to return, I know a lot of you watch the Sixers when they are wearing those jerseys almost every single night. Hit that thumbs up icon, like the video to show me you are excited for the return of those iconic black jerseys.
