Brewers are the best team in the NL – Albert Pujols breakdown Brewers vs. Mets series | MLB Network

Not with Harold Reynolds and Dan Pack. They’re on assignment on a busy Friday. I’m here with Jake Peaveey, future Hall of Famer Albert Puhol, who hit home runs like Peter Lonzo just did. All lines, right? We were chatting. We were chatting right before we saw those images and we’re showing you that the Mets are playing the Brewers for the first time in Milwaukee since that game three performance from Peter Lonzo. What did that home run do to Pete Lonzo? Well, let’s just I don’t know that Pete Lonzo is a New York Met if he doesn’t hit that home run. I remember you vividly getting in the the camera and going, “Shame on you New York fans who’ve hated on him all year long. Pete Alonzo last year took the brunt of this New York fan base.” He doesn’t hit that homer. I don’t know if he’s back. Thank goodness he’s back about to break Daryl Strawberry’s record. Yes, the Mets need uh him to hit a homer and get going. Get off the slide, though. He’s a homer shy of tying Daryl Strawberry’s franchise record uh for 252 home runs. Uh, Pete Alonzo, why Albert, as a guy that hit over 700 home runs, why is it there isn’t more value for a player that hit over 50 home runs? That’s what Pete Allonzo did in his rookie year. He is clearly a guy that wants to play every single day. Why is it that the Met fan base doesn’t value this slugger as much as they should? I mean, it’ll tell you the game side’s changed, you know, because I mean, if I’m building a team, this is the first guy that I want out there. a guy that wants to get out there every day, plays the game hard, you know, he wants to try to help his team every night to win. And he doesn’t come off the field, man. And like Pee would say, if he doesn’t hit that homer last year, I don’t think he would have be a New York Mets uh this year. Even though he hit the home run, he still, it took forever for him to get that deal with the New York Mets. The fan base was all over the ownership. Let me say this about him, too. I know in that playoff game, he had a botched popup. And Pete sometimes takes the brunt of of not being a great defender. I watch him play first base. Albert and I see a good defender over there. Somebody who’s gotten better and better. He certainly digs balls out and plays a good first base. What do you see? Yeah, same thing. He’s taking the time. Same thing, you know, with Bryce Harper, they saying, “Oh, now moving from the outfield to first base.” He’s taking the time to get better. And I remember myself when I went through from the outfield and I moved to first base. One thing that Jose Kendo told me, hey, for my infielder or our infielder to win a go, you had to be a gollow first baseman. And I’m sure that’s what he’s been doing. And the same thing with Bryce Harper. Uh the Milwaukee Brewers are the team that the Mets will be playing tonight. Kodai Sena against Brandon Woodruff. Now the way Peralta is pitching lately, Misowski currently uh dealing with a slight injury. You could dream on this being a game one NLCS matchup. I know there are Dodger fans that are spitting out their milk right now. Unhappy that I just said that, but you could dream on this. When you look at the Milwaukee Brewers, their last 40 games, Albert, they’re 31 and N. They’re scoring runs. They’re catching the ball. They’re the best base running team. Their starting RA is incredible. Their bullpen erra is incredible. Are we looking at the best team in the National League? I think so. I think where they have right now, that’s why they have the best record, you know, and and I know the Dodgers out there when they get their guys healthy, they can go out there with the Brewers, but the Brewers are going to be a tough teams in the playoff, you know, and I think, you know, you can talk about the pitching and the boop, but what I love is their position player. You know, Pal Murphy’s done a great job. this guy just give quality our back day in day out. They don’t strike out, they play great defense. And you know, it takes me back to my Cardinals year. You know, that’s how Tony Larusa uh teach us in the in spring training, how to win, how to go about it. And it’s not the best talenting team. I don’t want to disrespect them, but when you see the Dodger, you see all the names. When you see the Brewers, you don’t see all those name. But it doesn’t take the name. When you take when you cross that line, you know, whoever wins is whoever do the little things and what that’s what the Milwaukee You say. Yes. The Brewers are the best team in the National League. Right now with that pitching, I take them. What about you? Look, I I’ve got to agree because of the style of baseball they play in a world where we’ve letting loose uh fundamentals become a thing and and we often have to point that out on why teams aren’t who they think they are. A team that doesn’t have the superstar name shows up bluecollar. As Pat Murphy says, they show up and they play the game the right way. They play hard. Like Albert says, the bats one through nine win. Collectively, it’s a different hero seemingly each night. That’s what good teams do. I’ve heard the same stuff about the postseason talk. Can they score off number one starters and this and that? Look, you can run into some balls and hit homers off those number one starters every now and then. How you beat a number one starter is get him out of the game one through nine at bats. They do that. Mhm. They also are a team that is looking at their strength of schedule. Uh they have a bit of a challenging schedule. You see Brandon Woodruff, they’ve won every game you started. I want to compare their strength of schedule to a team on the bottom. Look at the Chicago Cubs. The Chicago Cubs have the third easiest remaining schedule. The Brewers have the sixth hardest. Now you’re seeing the Dodgers have the easiest remaining schedule, but the Potters are right in front of them. Uh does that matter? Because if I’m a fan sitting on the north side of Chicago, Albert, I’m like, “All right, sweet. I know we’re four games out of first place right now, and this Milwaukee Brewer train looks like it’s not coming back to the station. They’ve won nine of 10 in six in a row, but they have a challenging remaining schedule. We have an easy schedule. Do the Cubs have the advantage?” See, but I think the easy schedule sometime can be your worst enemy, you know, because I’ve been in teams sometime that we go and play teams under 500. And those guys at Timber Colo, man, they’re playing for an next year job and they can make it tough, you know, and being in those teams. So for the Brewers year, it’s a tough schedule, but if they get to the postseason, which they will this year, they’re going to be facing number one guys. They’re going to be facing tough teams. So that could be an edge for them. Prepare them, you know, for the postseason as well, you know, playing with those with those with that tough schedule. So I look at it like, hey, it can be an edge for the cut, but it could be an edge for the brew as well because it’s prepared then, you know, for that next round, that next level, which not so fast. Don’t just look at strength the schedule and say, oh, it’s a it’s a fast. I don’t buy it as much either simply because you don’t know it’s the big leagues, anybody clips anybody on a given night, and yet teams get hot and cold weekly, you know. So, it certainly can be looked at as an advantage, but like Albert said, when you’re playing another team with something on the line and you you can get some tense stuff. Those other teams without playing for something, they’re loose and dangerous. These two teams will be playing for something. Yeah. Nick Castianos and the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are 16 games over 500. They’re in first place in the NL East by two and a half games over the New York Mets. They’re squaring off against the Texas Rangers. The Rangers are just a game and a half out of that last AL wild card spot. They got their new guy, Mel Kelly, on the mound. The problem for the Rangers, a team that’s had issues offensively, they’re running into a guy that’s morphing into an NLI young candidate, and that’s Christopher Sanchez. We’re not thinking of the other candidates for this race because Paul Ske is just on another planet right now for the Pittsburgh Pirates. But I don’t know what the stats say, and I don’t know if they even track this, but Jake, it feels like he gets more swing and miss on pitches that almost touch the ground than any pitcher in the big leagues. Yeah, you see this is a big tall lanky left-hander. He’s coming from, you know, a a lower arm slot. I don’t think guys see him very well, which is why he gets swings and misses. The change up too, Greg. Guys are thinking that fast ball’s coming. The change up looks just like the fast ball and it doesn’t make it there. Do you face this kid? Tougher bat. It’s a tougher bat. I mean, everything moves and like P say he has control that change. He can throw it any any time. And I think I had a good success about the second time. But it’s, you know, good sinker, you know, his ball move really really well, you know, and I think uh, you know, it’s going to be tough for the Rangers tonight, you know, out there. So I I think, you know, I’m praying also that this guy hopefully I can have in the World Baseball Classic next year. So one of my star so I think uh hopefully he’s one of my guy, but he’s having an unbelievable year. uh you know his throw strike is a guy that throws right and uh he he command his secondary pitch pretty pretty pretty well the most humble superstar there ever was. We just show a video. He’s a tough at bat. He took a bridge. When you see Albert stand up on him like that after the swing, that’s trouble. You’ve seen that before a couple times. All right, let’s move on to uh the Bronx. The Houston Astros open up a three-game series at Yankee Stadium uh against the the Yanks and they are the team that everyone seems to be talking about. Uh lineups have come out for this game and people want to know where is Aaron Judge playing. Will he be playing in right field for the first time since going on the IIL with a a flexor strain in his right elbow? So, it’s affecting his ability to throw the baseball. We found out he is dhaging tonight and Cody Bellinger isn’t right. So once again, Jean Carlos Stanton is not in the lineup for the New York Yankees. I think this is an issue. There’s a good chance Dan plays the outfield tomorrow. Aaron Boon says this is a guy that hasn’t played the field in two years. This tells me the injury to judge is is pretty significant if if he’s not able to go out there and get through a couple throws. And so this is a not a good thing for the Yankees because the Yankees got some ground to make up. You’re facing Hunter Brown tonight. You got a guy in Stanton who’s was as hot as anybody on your team carrying you and now that has to just get a look for a pinch hit appearance against a lefty maybe late. Um, if I’m the Yankees, I can promise you this. I think they are. They’re getting as creative as they can. I think the injury to judge is is more significant than we’re being led on to if this is the case. A similar injury you dealt with in 2003. Yes, I did in 2003. Similar injury. We were in Milwaukee. I threw a throw from the outfield and I felt something really really hard and I had to go in the in the DL at that time which is the IL right now and for two weeks it it didn’t bother me swing and making contact but it did bother me checking my swing or or swing through uh without making contact. I it it got sore but during the period of the season it was helping me and and I end up having surgery like 5 years later not the Tommy jump but just cleaning my elbow. But it’s something that I don’t know if he does what he has. I remember that Tony La Rosa used to tell Edgar if there’s a ball hit down the line third base or in the gap you either pass it to Jimmy. Jimmy can throw it in or Edgar has to run way out there and I had to undertoss it to to You had to underhand baseball. Yeah, that was that was the rules. That’s that’s the only way out of the way that I could play in the outfield. And you know later on it got better and you know good thing here with Josh. I don’t know if he’s going to be able to play in the outfield that the remainder on the season, but if he does, it’ll help him, you know, because the outfield here in New York is really short. So, that’ll help him, you know, make it that long and throw. 20 games um before I think Judge got hurt nine home runs in that time. He crushed Yavaldi. I mean, he had great career numbers against Yaldi. I promise you, Yaldi did a little dance when he got to his lineup card walking in and saw that Stanton was not in there going to get three at bats. So, I I can tell you this. I I believe the numbers and the analytics are supporting what we’re talking about of the Yankees know they’re better. We saw them down the stretch. Stanton and Judge have to be in this lineup ASAP. It’s a problem. And um look, defensively, they’re not one of the superior teams in baseball. We’ve all seen it. The Metrics G kind of look at them as a middle of the pack defense. I think we’re overreacting to the vulpey errors probably, but this is a team that’s had some issues defensively. To have a right fielder who can’t make a pivotal throw when there’s a runner scoring from second base sounds like you’re adding more fuel to the fire that the Yankees are hurting themselves in games. They’re about to have an outfielder who can’t run. Stanton, I love him, but he can’t move on his feet just at the age and all of that his body is went. So, you’re it’s tit for tat. Aaron Judge can’t throw. Stanton can’t run. Who you putting out there? Exactly. You had to put your best player out there. You had to put your best player out there and the best player is Aaron Judge, you know, and hopefully, you know, it’ll just be a couple of weeks. Hopefully he can start progressing on his throw and they maybe can can take that that that that little uh book play that Tony Larusa played with me in 03 where they put me in the in the IIL for a little bit and then I was able to feel good in two weeks where I was able to like I say on the toss the ball and then later on later in the season overdraw and it helped me out. But if he can swim, maning, I I put him as a DH every single day because he’s your best player, you know. So, and they’re lucky enough that he’s able to at least to DH because they’re struggling right now. And this is a big series, you know, with the Houston Astro taking on Hunter Brown tonight who’s got a 2.47 RA. The Houston Astros with Carlos Koreah and Jose in the Bronx. You think Yankee fans are over that by the way? No way. No way. They’re going to get booed. Boo the heck out, huh? a little a little bit. There’s Aluve who I I I I know for a fact cannot stand going to the Bronx. Certain players love getting booed. I think both of you probably like getting booed. You liked it when teams like the right you guys. In my mind, when I took that field, it didn’t care if I was 45,000 people booing me. Like I didn’t listen. It was just me and facing JPB out there and that’s if he make a mistake, I was going to be ready for it. And you didn’t hear anything? Same. No, I think the best do that. No, if you’re getting booed, it’s for a reason.
