🔴LIVE 🔴Chicago Cubs VS St Louis Cardinals/ August 09/ Mlb Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
could happen. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next 8 weeks. Hello baseball fans and welcome. MLB the show has action out of the NL Central. It’s the Chicago Cubs taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just a little bit away from first pitch and today’s starting pitcher, Matthew Liberator. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. Here’s Y1. Just missed. Swings and misses. And count one and two. reaches but can’t haul it in. Batting second, first base Justin Turner. Turner climbs in on that right side headed towards the corner. Could be extra bases. Porter rounds second, heads for third, coming home. Safe and it’s one- nothing. Wastes no time there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Seiya Suzuki the next Cub to hit. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. Oh, he botches it. Still finds a way to get off a throw and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the out. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup. Singi, this righty heavy lineup must be licking their chops with a lefty on the mound. Now, to me, Boog, it shows the managers trying to set these players up to have a big game facing an opposite-handed pitcher. You only get a fraction of a second longer to see the ball and decide to swing. But that can be the difference between a line drive and a swinging strike. Matthew Carson Kelly the next to hit takes ball one. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. Inside corner at the knees for a strike. [Applause] And a foul ball way upstairs. Two and two. Turner leads off second with one gone in the inning. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. [Applause] Hit on the ground to the right side and he takes it himself for the out. Batting fifth center fielder Pete Ro Armstrong. And up next for Chicago, Pete Crow Armstrong and Singy. We already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs. Ball one there. And another ball just off the inside edge. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter’s count. Willie Castro on deck for the Cubs. Thought the green light might be on right there, but maybe not. If you’re looking to swing in that count, that’s the pitch you want. Two outs, fouls, one away, and now three and two. Matthew gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. safe at the plate and the misplay cost them a run. It’s two nothing. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Fielder got a piece of it, but the way that thing came off the bat, no surprise at all, he couldn’t pick it cleanly. It’s a very difficult play and that swing definitely was deserving of a hit. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Eddie one. He swings and fouls one off. That one missed. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Liberator picks over and he’s back in there. First inning going a bit long. 23 pitches to this point. cut on and missed and it’s a strike out and that is the inning. They get two runs on three hits, no errors and one left. On to the bottom of the first. It’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals nothing. Back here in St. Louis, today’s starting pitcher, Daniel Palencia. base runners are tough to come by with him out there, Chris. Well, he brings into this one an excellent strikeout to walk ratio on the season. And when you consider the amount of swings and misses that he gets and the fact that he’s not issuing free passes, that’s going to make him more economical in his pitch count, allow him to move into the middle and deeper part of ball games. So, we’ll see if that remains true in this one. And first off, Ringer is fouled off. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across, this is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Inside and it’s two and one. Ripped to short, snagged out of bounds. tosses to first. One up, one down. Here’s a Cardinals lineup now. Trailing by a couple of runs already and I’m sure they’d like to erase that deficit quickly. Yeah, you don’t want to let this deficit get into your head and you’re trying to just make up the difference with one swing and you really don’t have the base runners on. You’ve got to contribute, keep the line moving, and all of a sudden you have a big inning, everything shifts and you find yourself in the driver’s seat. MVP MVP MVP Ivon Herrera in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Next offering is downstairs. Two balls, no strike. Strike one. Two balls, one strike. One out. Face is empty. [Applause] Draws the walk there. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. So, a man aboard, Alec Burlson. Next up for the Cardinals. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Center field. Crow Armstrong should have it. Brings it in. And there’s two down. Batting fourth, left fielder Luke. Lars Nbar now at the plate. [Music] There’s the strike. [Music] And ball one. Two and one the count now. He hasn’t seen a fast ball yet, but you’ve got to be ready to hit one because you doubt the pitcher wants this to go to a 3-1 count. And a 2-1 on the way. Squang in a high-fly ball. Well struck. That’s back. Gone and it ties it up. It’s 2-2. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. His bat looks like it’s in the zone for such a long time and that gives him the ability to get barrel on it and hit the ball out to any part of the park. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run and now the shorts stop Mason Win. There’s the strike. Two down on up and in. And the count is one and one. The shorts stop takes a ball. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Right through there for a strike. popped up. Castro right there to make the grab. And that’s the third out. Two runs for St. Louis on this blast. Two-2 game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Second inning set to go. Ian up to hit after scoring runs. This is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Liberator back to work. That’s through there for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. [Music] Fouled off down the right side. Kicks and deals. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Applause] Fly ball to right. Walker makes the catch and there’s one gone. And here comes Dansby Swanson. Come on. Come on. That misses the zone. And that’s ball one. Tied up here in the early going. That one ripped. Ed one hops the wall. Now around second going for third and he’s got himself a triple. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. One down, runner at third. Now here is Matt Shaw. Swinging a ground ball. Throws to first in time. Now two away as they get a run across. So important to really lock in on an at bat like this. It seems easy with the infield back, but you got to make sure you put the ball in play. Put it on the ground. Brought that run in. Back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup. Nico her will come up to hit. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. And that misses ball one. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across here in the top of the second. And there’s the strike. Breaking ball inside and a count. Two on one. Come on. That’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did, and he did it perfectly. Justin Turner now in the air, left field, down the line, and that is that one run, a pair of hits, no errors, and one left on. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Cubs three and the Cardinals two. Back in St. Louis as the Cardinals come up to hit here in the last of the second bottom half of inning number two. Here’s Nolan Gorman taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Fought off foul. [Applause] That one not close and the count even one and one. Swing and a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance and that one is gone. He circles the bases and we’re level. It’s 33. Wow, what a clutch swing right there. And now anything can happen in this game. [Applause] It’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run to the slight opposite field into the gap. Man, making it look easy, that’s for sure. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. The batter now, Jordan Walker. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Turner brings it in. One away. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat. So, up next, Pedro Pah. just missed. One out, base is empty and a run in. Bottom half of inning number two that one missing inside. James Kingsley, our played umpire. Consistent and maybe a little generous on the edges. Yeah, Boo. He’ll give a little bit on the edges like you said, but from what I’ve seen, he usually does that when a pitcher is just commanding those parts of the strike zone and essentially they’ve earned it. The umpire rolls with them. That’s out to center field. Crow Armstrong should have it and puts the squeeze on that one. That’s out number two. Singy, what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters? I’d say off the plate, away and down. And why? Those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball. Victor Scott stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Next offering down low and in the dirt. Hit hard but foul off to the left. Two outs. Goes down looking. One for the Cardinals on the solo home run. We’re tied now at three apiece. Back here at Bush Stadium. Top half of the third inning. And here’s the DH for the Cubs. Seiya Suzuki. Well, he’s back out here for the third. And after the first couple of innings, pretty rough. I think the skipper is looking for him to give him a little bit of length. See if he can save the bullpen some on the ground to the left. And that’s just foul. Suzuki starting as the designated hitter hitting third in the lineup and he was born in Japan. Next offering is down low. just missed. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it [Applause] to the left side, but it is well fouled. Foul ball. Another two two upcoming. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next pitch is outside. Gets a piece and stays alive. down to the dirt, swing, and a miss. Pah down to first. Got him. One away on the strike out. Well, obviously that was nowhere near the strike zone by the time it got to the plate. And people at home watching are thinking, “What’s he swinging at?” But I’ll tell you, some of the break guys snap off these days is just devastating. It can be so tough to recognize where a pitch like that’s going to end up. Kelly stands in now and watches strike one right through there for a strike. Going to count one and two. This one in the air. Burlson in position makes the grab for the second out. Now batting center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong. And now it’s going to be Pete Crow Armstrong. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. Now a fly ball to right center. Scott sizing this one up. Carous. And that is that. Three up, three down for him. There we head now to the home half of inning number three. All tied up at three apiece. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. Now up for St. Louis. Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and it’s one and0. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. And that is out of play. I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good vlo swing and a base hit. Just kind of sliced that one into center. [Applause] And now it’s Ivon Herrera. Walked his first time. Now, and that’s off the inside edge. And that is ball one. And another ball way to lay off that pitch down. That one is absolutely belted and it looks like trouble. Lead runner around second. He boots it. Donovan rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And the batter now, Alec Burlson. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. inside. Just missed. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. You’re in the last half of the third. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Movement in the bullpen. Shota Imanaga up and throwing for manager Craig Council. Man at second. Outside low now. Two balls in a strike. [Applause] battling here as he fouls it away. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And there’s a ball. Here stands at second with no outs. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. This one smoked out to left. Half makes the grab. One away. Now batting left fielder Luke. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pad. Daniel Palencia won’t go any further tonight and the opener strategy clearly didn’t work out this time. New arm coming on. We’ll be back after a short break. Now pitching for the pitcher on here, Shimanaga. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Stepping in Lars Nbar. He’s already homerred here in this one. [Music] And that’s downed away. This one in the air. Horner. Oh, come on. Puts it away for the out. And there are two down. Now batting shortstop Mason Win. So two down now. And here is Mason Win. Flyed to right his first time. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Come on. [Applause] That one down the line and foul ball. Two outs and one in scoring position. That misses the zone. Now one and two and a curve is down and in. Good eye right there. really good take, especially with two strikes. Nolan Gorman would be next if they can extend the inning. And he’s homered already, so I’m sure he’d love a chance to do some more damage here. And ball four, two aboard. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. First and second, two outs. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Nolan Gorman. He’s already homered in this game. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit, just not able to square it up. That’s off the inside corner. And it’s a ball and a strike. Two aboard, two outs. [Applause] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see Another two on, two outs, and a swing and a miss. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. On to inning number four. It’s the Cardinals four and the Cubs three. And welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started. So up now for Chicago. Willie Castro in the air right field. He won’t get there. That should be extra bases. safe at second with nobody out and he represents the tying run. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. Didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now at the plate, Ian had former first round pick out of the University of Cincinnati. Grew up in Pittsburgh. That one finds the zone. Go and one. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Pitch misses and one and one. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things that when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One out and a runner at second. [Music] [Applause] That one misses. And that’s ball two. Well, this is a little tough for the hitter in the back of the mind. You’re wondering with first base open, am I going to get a pitch to hit? Got to stay back. Let your hands work. Stay in the middle of the field. [Music] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball three. Hey, you got this. And ball four, two aboard. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Third base Matt Shaw. Now the third baseman Matt Shaw. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. And a pop off right side foul territory. has room and he makes the catch. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Here’s Nicoer. He’s two for two. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. and fouled off. [Applause] Pitch misses there. Yeah, the count one and two. First and second, two down. Top half of inning number four. on the ground to third. Fires across the diamond that ends the frame. Cubs strand a couple. They still trail it here. Four to three. Back here in St. Louis. Bottom of the fourth. Now it’s the right fielder Jordan Walker. Walker. misses off the plate and that’s ball one. Hammers that one curling down the line and foul. Oh, good solid contact right there. Just a bit out in front of that fast ball. Got to try to stay on that backside just a little bit longer and see if you can do some damage. Turner collects it. Steps on first for the out. Unbelievable. Now batting catcher Pedro Pah. Here’s the catcher Pedro Pah. Cardinal. Come on. Fair ball around first and hustling for second. And that’s a twobagger. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. One out, runner at second. Scott getting ready to hit. Went down on strikes his first time through. There’s a strike. Late with the swing there. Ellie just threw that fast ball by him, elevated, and if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Man at second. That misses. One and two countries. [Applause] And that one upstairs [Applause] headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. [Applause] That misses counts full. Three and two. Ground ball up the middle on the run. Throw to first. Nicely done for the out. Now batting second base. Now Brendan Donovan. One for two. That one missed. Was a good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Swinging a foul straight back. That misses the countdown two and two. Two outs with a runner at third. Swings and chases a low one there. Catcher has it. Fires to first in time. The two-3 strikeout ends the inning. So, no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Cardinals four and the Cubs three. Back here in St. Louis, top five. John Shabi with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Justin Turner. Cardinal. Liberator back to work. swing and a high-fly ball right at field. Walker makes the play and there’s one down. Now batting stepping in the long ball threat. Seiya Suzuki bowl for two in this one. That pitch in for a strike. 0 and one. I think he was sitting off speed right there because he just let the fast ball go by. Hit in the air left field. N bar on the move. He makes the grab. Two down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Kelly the next to hit takes outside. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. his 14th of the year. It’s 44. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time. took a direct path to the ball, excellent extension, and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. Pete Crow Armstrong digs in now. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Two outs. Base is empty. And a foul ball and down on strikes. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Cubs get one on the solo shot. All even now at four a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth. So now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter, Ivon Herrera, and misses inside. You know, these cards putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Just off the inside edge. That one misses. Three and one now. hit hard on the ground to short. Swanson fires over to first and the lead off man set down in their half of the fifth. Now batting first baseman, Alec Burlson. And up next for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. had a swing and a bouncer. Foul of first. Go Cardinal Cardinal. Tied at four. Swing and a foul. Out of play. Next pitch is outside. Too close for me partner to take that O2 fast ball, but for whatever reasons he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. One down. Base is empty. Swung on. Belted way back there. It’s a bomb. Home run number 15 on the year. It’s 54. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. [Applause] Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Lars Nbar next up for the Cardinals. Off the mark there. 1 and0. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. Yeah, there’s the strike. One ball, two strikes. face knock center field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Well, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. He’s 0 for one. [Applause] first offering and it just misses. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. Next offering is fouled back and there’s a foul ball. Foul ball still a one and two count. Nbar leads off first with one away. [Applause] And that’s outside. Two and two. [Applause] Slides, but he can’t come up with it. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Here’s the third baseman, Nolan Gorman. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike at the dish. Looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play boo. One out. Runners at first and second. fought off foul. [Music] One more time. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. Now up for St. Louis, Jordan Walker. Well, the way these two teams have battled in this game, you know, you need more. Got to continue to add runs if you’re going to get out of here with a win. And a strike. Traffic on the bases with one already in last half of inning number five. Foul ball there. [Applause] Two outs. Swings and miss has struck him out. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now a 54 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Sunny Gray. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. This is Willie Castro. Well, both sides equally as strong, so not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. First pitch misses. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Kyle Ley getting loose out there. Number 49 also getting ready right now behind in the count. Two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. That one catches the corner for a strike. getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. That’s in there and the count’s even at two. It’s in and out of his glove. Still able to fire over and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. leftielder Ian. Ian Hap the next Cub to hit [Applause] just missed. Gray measures 5′ 10 in more than 100 career wins on the mound. A former first round pick back in 2011. That one is upstairs. There’s a strike inside. Just missed. The Cardinals up by a run and we’re the top half of the sixth. right side tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Danby Swanson. Danby Swanson stands in. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond. And this guy is at the top of the list. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. 01 now. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Got him looking and he did not like the call. Nothing across here this half. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Cardinals five and the Cubs four. Now pitching for the back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Caleb Thebar. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Well, one-run game. And now the Cardinals catcher, Pedro Pah. And the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump. And defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics. But the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. H sizes this one up. Makes the grab. One down. Now batting center. So digging in Victor Scott. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. Singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean watching him track balls in the outfield. It is beautiful. And fires in a fast ball at 95. And I would say that most great defensive outfielders, it’s kind of natural. There is some work that you can do to it uh to improve your game, but ultimately you either have it or you don’t. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boog, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Yeah. Some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Now it’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. One for three. Donovan. Remember Mark Catse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. That one misses. Ball one. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kate say into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. And it’s fouled away. swinging a ground ball up the middle on the run. Sends it over to first and very nicely done for the out. Red Birds down quietly as they hold on to a 5-4 lead. And we’re back now. The third baseman, Matt Shaw. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. [Applause] Looking to get the tying run on base. right side hard hit and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw. So here’s her now. Check swing and he went strike one. Next offering is fouled back. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So now Turner into that right side and a foul ball. Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] This one popped up. Foul ground first base side and makes the play and that’s out number three. Nothing happening there for the Cubs. Still down a run. It’s five to four. [Music] And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the seventh. Here’s the Cardinal DH. Ivon Herrera swinging a drive deep right field and that is a foul ball. And he swings through that one. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. That one way inside. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. That’ll fire up the dugout. His 11th of the year. It’s 6-4. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. [Applause] Let’s take another look at it, but this time with the help of Stackcast. Well, this one wasn’t hit that high, but when you can launch it at 111 miles per hour off the bat and get some backspin, it’ll carry enough to get out of here. [Applause] Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Caleb Thebar departs. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Oh yeah, righty reliever out of the pen. Brad Keller. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Alec Burlson [Applause] in for a strike. Good slider. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here. The bottom of the seventh. St. Louis. Next pitch misses. One and one. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Ryan Braier getting ready to go. Kitridge warming up as well. Come on. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. He was all over that one. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Lars Nbar. And it was a homer back in the first inning that got his day started at the plate. Yeah, Boo. A two-run blast. And that swing will give him confidence the rest of the way. Edge of the zone for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Rudder at first with no outs here. Now one and one. [Applause] The 1-1 is fouled off. On the ground, two ball spin throw. That’s one relay to first. Double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. and win. So up next, Mason Win and the first pitch misses for ball one. Fast ball for a strike. The one-1 is fouled off. That one way outside and it’s two and two. Two down. Doon swings through it and that’s a strikeout. St. Louis tacks on one with a homer. It’s a two-run lead now at 64. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Kyle Ley. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Now it’s the DH. Seiya Suzuki 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. First pitch just misses. Activity in the bullpen. Jojo Romero up and throwing. Let’s do it. And that is out of play. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at in a one count. Just not able to square it up. bows it back with two strikes. And a one-two stays alive. just off the outside part of the plate and it remains two and two. And a good eye there. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. In an era with a lot of swing and miss and strikeouts, you got to love an at bat like this. No one giving in. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Strike him out. Good job to fight that one off. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. This one popped up right side. Donovan. Nabs it. One up. One down. Now batting catcher Carson Kelly. And now the batter is Carson Kelly. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. No need to offer it that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Next offering is in for a strike quickly in an 02 hole. You’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority. Pitch misses there. Now one and two. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Out to short. Gwyn tosses to first. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Two down, base is empty. Pete Crow Armstrong, the next Cub to hit that one. Close rule to ball. Ball one. Evidently not too impressed with that call and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner. So, he’s making his case. You got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire. And he felt this was his time at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Cubs are down quietly. And the score remains 6-4. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Braier just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So digging in Nolan Gorman third base Nolan Gorman. Hey. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The Cubs bullpen with some action. Drew Pomearatz up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Foul ball up and in. Two and one. That’s a little bit low. [Applause] And that one clips the corner. We got a full count. Come on. Come on. This one in the air right field. Castro on the move. Hauls it in for the one away. Now batting. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. 0 for three in this one. And that one clips the corner. He’s a bullpen arm that keeps the ball in the ballpark, but obviously out of the bullpen, you’re looking to limit home runs. Yeah. And that’s why he’s such a high leverage arm. Just doesn’t matter for him. He looks at attacking the zone and attacking hitters regardless of the situation. Swings through that one for strike two. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Lays out and makes the play. Hitter’s got a broken heart on that one. It had base hit written all over it. Maybe extra bases. Great diving catch for the upset. Two outs, space is empty. Pedro Pahes next up for the Cardinals. That’s off the mark and it’s one and0. Two outs on the ground right side and it goes just fouled. Well struck right field. That’s got a chance and that one is off the wall in safely with a double. His second of the day. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Showed off some really nice oppo pop with that swing and just couldn’t get it over the fence, but I absolutely love everything about that approach and the mechanics right there. So, runner at second, two down. Scott the next to hit. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. First pitch misses. Let’s go. Just missed. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline. Breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job. Come on, St. Louis. And a two-1 hammered but foul. [Music] Made on second. Two down. And they’ll do it again. Got him. That’s the third out. The Cards leave one. They’re up 6-4. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Jojo Romero. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Willie Castro now at the plate, a switch hitter batting right. [Applause] Romero goes 5 feet 11 in 215 lbs and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2016. And that one pulled foul. [Music] That’s down and in. A slider missed. And that drops in for a strike on the ground right side. Donovan the throw to first and they get the leadoff man in the ninth. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks. Partner Ian Hap will hit next. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Ball one there. The Redbirds leading by two here at the top of the ninth. That misses the zone. Two and one. [Applause] And he pumps in a strike. [Applause] Got him swinging for the strike out. Now only one out remaining. Swanson digs in. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. [Music] And that skips in the dirt. Next pitch is downstairs. two and another ball. Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. That’s in there. Three and one. I know a slider is a great pitch, but when you’ve got really good velocity, sometimes you just got to challenge the hitter with that four seamer. Swinging a miss full countdown. The Cubs down to their final strike. Good played appearance there, able to take the walk and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] And that one missing low. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. The tying run at the plate. Little chopper rolls foul. rips one to right and there’s a hit and now first and second with two outs and the throw’s offline safe at third. That’s tremendous fight from him and I know it’s got the dugout fired up down there down to the last strike and he comes up with a hit to keep the game alive. It ain’t over yet. So, two outs with runners on the corners. And now, Nicoer. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. They’re down to their final strike. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Hard liner and it’s just fouled. That was close. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two and that’s outside. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Swaying at a ball popped in the air. He’s going to fall for a hit. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Jojo Romero gives way and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. New arm on the mound for the Cardinals. Andre Palante. Should be a good first matchup for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. First and second, two outs. Here’s Justin Turner. That clips a corner. [Applause] Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. Swing and a miss. And a count is 0 and two. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes. And that is downstairs. And the count is even. Two and two. Hit to right. And that ought to do it. He’s got it. Ball game. And the Cardinals hold on to win a nailbiter. stranding the winning run on base. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save.
