Postgame Interviews: Brian Daboll, Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart, Abdul Carter | New York Giants

What were your uh thoughts of Jackson? It’s about what I thought he would do. Efficient, effective, aggressive, confident in the pocket. Um some stuff we can work on, but he’s doing good. He had to show some poise where he was pressured in the pocket, got the ball out with a nice screen turbo. Yeah. Were you impressed with the with the poise that he showed? He does it in practice. I think I was asked a question from might have been Pat holding on to the ball and um look there’s things he can be better at, but we missed some opportunities on third down, some drops that would even been better for him and for us, but he’s a confident young player. He’s improved since he’s been here. Still got a long way to go. Uh but I enjoy working with him. I like his demeanor on the sideline. Sees the game well. Again, not not that we’re getting, you know, we got a couple blisses and things like that, but um I’m glad he’s here. Boys in practice run is different than standing in there when the TJ Sanders hits you in the face. Well, we saw that on tape at Old Miss though. So, he did that for a long time there. He’s tough. He’s got I told you good moxy. He’s got toughness. He’s got leadership. I think we threw the ball 51 times and didn’t have a sack today. So, credit the offensive line first and foremost. How about how about just how um just the whole progression? I mean, you push how promising it looked to have Russell open the game the way he did. um with your quick strike passing attack and then just you know and Dart taking over just the whole yeah how it’s set up. Um well look we’ve we’ve we’ve worked hard in practice. You never know how it’s going to go. It’s one preseason game. Um Russ has done this for a long time so it’s you know not his first rodeo. You know gave him some plays to get in a little bit of a rhythm. Um you know I think all the quarterbacks led their their offenses down to scoring points. got held up in in some of the fringe stuff, drops, couple too many false starts. Um, you know, at one point we were we were pretty good on third down. I’m not sure where we ended up, but that, you know, big plays. Didn’t I would say have a ton, but gave up far too many on the defensive side of it in a number of areas. Um, so it was good first day, but I think each offense had about 400 yards. So, one of the big one of the criticisms that Jackson faced out of college was the offense that he played in. from no who’s criticizing him just draft analyst all the draft criticisms oh draft analyst big yeah big the big picture coming out which is why I wish he might be more green might take him the year he needs to sit things like that was there anything that you saw about him that made you not be concerned with that that yeah he’s going to now be in a pro style offense it’s not going to be a problem yeah pretty much everything um stood in the pocket was good under pressure good with his legs tough competitive accurate. Again, everybody comes from different offenses. You know, Jaylen Herz came from a, you know, running college offenses. He’s doing pretty good. Juah did when I was there. I mean, a lot of guys run offenses similar to that. There’s not a lot of just this is what it does. I mean, whether they run our offense, whether they run some of usually when you come to the league, the offenses are going to be different. Again, it’s one game. Um, he’s had good practices, he’s had practices we got to improve on. there’s good plays out there, plays he can prove on, but again um you know just talking to him on the sideline, his demeanor, um it was a good start for him. There will be a lot of quarterbacks too that that avoid the rush when it’s in their face, but it’s almost like they avoid the rush and then they just run. And Jackson does have the ability to run, but it seemed like when he was back there, his eyes never left downfield. He was moving. Yeah, that’s and that’s something that that’s something else we saw on tape when he was coming out. He’s he’s he’ll stand in there and take one now, but he’s got good feel and good athleticism if he has to run. Um again, pretty simple defense we’re playing. Uh we understand what it is, but it was good to be here uh in this environment. No surprise, packed house, you know, first preseason game here in Buffalo. Um not a surprise. So we practice with a lot of noise and um you know great first environment to be in for a rookie quarterback where some places you’re you know 10 15,000 fans here you got a packed house um which is a good thing about getting what about getting the uh the first team involved? What went into that decision and were you happy with what you got out of the first team on both sides of the ball? Yeah. Well, I number of questions was asked about that leading up to it and you know the answer is do what’s best for the football team. So I thought we needed that. Um we’ll do it again. We’re going to play in the preseason. People that are able to play are going to play and if they’re not able to play or a doctor or a trainer says it’d be smart to hold them out, we’ll hold them out. But other than that, we’re going to play. You talked about earlier this week wanting to see Jackson in different scenarios. Yeah. He obviously got to manage a two-minute drill at the end of the half. Um, what did you see from him in that? Yeah, we we manufactured one earlier, too. Kind of an uptempo, no huddle, the touchdown drive, I believe. Um, or I told Mike, “Let’s kick it up a gear and and go no huddle.” You know, he’s had different situations. Third down. Um, you know, it was good to play him almost a half and I think I don’t know what Russ got. What do you get? 12 or 13 14 plays somewhere around there. 12. Um, so again, as many situations as we can put all the quarterbacks in, you know, I thought Jameus came out good, too. We got a couple plays. We need to make those plays to keep drives going or a yard short on the sticks and then we, you know, kick it and they get a short field. We bust a coverage or there for a big play and just we got to do better job complimentary football. Good things to learn. A lot of learn things to learn from. Proud of, you know, it’s always it’s always hard to win a game in this league regardless of what it is, but um a lot of things we have to improve on. a lot of the good learning things that that you get from the preseason that you know we got to make sure we we watch and we get we learn from it. Can you do a touchdown? You talk a little bit about his touchdown like just sweet throw. Yeah, like sweet throw but also like he had a couple of them. We had a couple chances down on some goes too that we should have caught what he was supposed to do. Obviously the touchdown works but he said Connor go out there run a go against that corner. I’m gonna throw it to you buddy. So um luckily we didn’t have Connor out there. We had somebody else and uh um yeah, he threw it was one-on-one play. Threw it up, threw a go, receiver made a nice play, stacking them, good catch, ball in stride. You know, he gives guys chances down the field. Doesn’t throw the ball out of bounds most of the time and gives them chances to make plays. And it’s the job of a receiver to make a play when you’re one-on-one. That’s the job of a receiver. Job of a quarterback is is give your guy a chance. Don’t throw it out of bounds. Don’t give them no chance when it’s a one-on-one play. Um it’s what we expect from all our QBs. Banks played long after most of the starters. What’s the significance of that? I know you were short at corner, but is there something to Well, Flat Flot wasn’t here, but you know, I thought I thought D could use some work, so I played him as much as I wanted to play him. One more time. Yeah, not not a ton of plays for those first guys. Um, couple series, which was the plan. somewhere between six and 10 plays unless we were playing a certain way. Maybe it’ have been a little bit more. But, um, again, there’s some good there’s plenty of I don’t want to call it bad, but bad that we got to learn from. Um, we got to build on it. We got a a big week of practice here against AG’s Jets. Um, expect good competitive practices with that group. Try to take another step. Still a ways to go. So, but beats the alternative the the who Abdul Abdul obviously there’s just some good expected that but just those five um not not a lot of plays so we good week here coming up against the Jets um you know keep on building with him so with all these with the rookies with our team with everything again let’s take it for what it’s worth It’s one preseason game. Um there’s some good stuff and there’s a lot of things we need to correct and that’s what our job is to do is to leave here and and go home and you know the guys some of the guys played a fair amount and make sure they’re ready to go and then come back on uh practice and you know improve the things we need to improve on which we can learn a lot from this state. a lot. I think it was Brandon Brown who said it a couple months ago the idea when you’re scouting guys and you see it in on film in college and you scout them and then they get all of a sudden they’re on the field and you start seeing the same things. You just mentioned things you saw on tape at Old Miss for Jackson you’re now seeing now. I mean, is that also part of the nature of these guys, especially for Jackson that they play? Yeah. And and again, we’re talking about one game. Uh but I I’ve seen him in OTAAS. I’ve seen him in training camp. Um, I know his personality, you know, developed a good relationship with him throughout the draft process. Got here, he’s, you know, someone that I, uh, you know, enjoy coaching and have a very good relationship with and see a lot of positive signs and and he’s very hard on himself. You know, I said, I’m proud of you tonight. Um, you did some good things. We got to make some more plays, too, on the perimeter, and that’s not what we do. you know, we got two or three chances to make those plays and you know, whatever mid what’s mid now mean? That was mid. That that was his response. I said, “Let’s let’s just let’s you hard on himself. I’ll say that.” You know, he’s Yeah, you got to ask him about what mid means. I’m 67. Everybody was limited in practice. So, we know why they didn’t play except Jaylen. Is that a medical thing, too? Everyone that didn’t play didn’t play because the medical team or the doctors told me that it’s probably a good idea they don’t play this game. So, everyone including that would be everyone, Ryan. Yep. You know, I’m just messing with you, buddy. Your first series today and then also the offense in general and what you saw from your other quarterbacks. Yeah, I thought we did a good job. I thought our consistency throughout the whole game um made some plays. I thought it was good to be out there, you know, just be with the fellas and and obviously to be a New York Giant, what a blessing it is to lead these guys and be a part of that. So, um, you know, I think that every week we just want to keep getting better and, you know, these it’s so funny cuz I I I think these preseason games mean so much, you know, just being able to get out there and the the the culture in the locker room to pregame warm-ups to the whole rhythm of how we do that and how we do that really well. And I thought we did a great job of that. Even on the sideline, game on the line, just everybody was in tune. It was obvious from the way you talked this week that you did want to play regardless of what anybody else thought it was important to you. Yeah, I definitely wanted to play. I think it’s uh good to be anytime you get to be in the White Lines, it’s a good thing. It’s a blessing and uh man, I’m just grateful to wear the blue and uh what a what a great day it was. Talk a bit about Jackson. Yeah, I thought I thought Jackson did a great job. I thought he made some great throws. I thought LJ came down. LJ is such a great contestant catcher. He did a great job on that. And so I thought he really did a really good job. Jackson and I were joking because like I was saying to him, I remember my first touchdown. Like it’s such a great feeling. Did you tell Daves that you wanted to play? Daves and I were both on the same page. He he knew I wanted to play and vice versa. Uh you know, he wanted me to play. I I was ready to go. So I I love playing. You said it was important for you to play, but just also for you getting rhythm with everybody. How important was that for you to get out there and share that with the guys a bit? Yeah, it’s great. Well, you get to go against a great defense every day, you know, um and we we have that challenge every day go against our defense and so that makes us better. But to go against another really good defense, too. And a defense that’s, you know, a team that’s been in the playoffs, done some great things to compete against those guys is is a good feeling for us. And um just creates a little mojo and just obviously winning matters and and to be able to do it together and to get that first win in preseason means a lot to us. Russ, you’ve seen a lot in this league obviously through your career. I’m just curious from from an urgency and from, you know, a mental standpoint for you guys now. Now you come off of this game, but now the next time you’re on the field, you’re going to be against another team on Tuesday. I know you’ll get to that, but I’m just curious from an intensity point of view. How do you keep that high? How does this team maintain that going through this? Well, I think the first thing is is uh not be too high, not be too low. I just remaining focused on the work, remaining focused on the progress, you know, incremental gains, um, and understanding that we’re doing this thing together offensively, defensively, special teams. uh you know winning is a habit and we want to create winning habits not just on on Sundays or Saturdays like today but it’s the process of winning that you have to enjoy and I think um when you love practice and you love it and you compete as high as high as a level as we do every day and get after every day makes the games a little bit that much more simple and I think that’s the thing that we want to always establish and you have to establish it every day that’s the good thing about playing the game of football it’s it’s one of those things that you have to re recreate that every day and that mentality So, uh, we’re on we’re on the journey of that and and that’s what we’re looking forward to. Can you talk about the offensive line? There’s so much focus on that here and I think you guys, however many times you threw the ball today, there were no sacks and and not that many pressures. Yeah, I thought the line did a great job. I think the ones kept space, you know, really against, you know, some really good players on the defensive line for them. Uh, they did a good job keeping, you know, space for me. Receivers got open quickly in an on time manner. Uh, that’s all part of it as well. We have great confidence in our our offensive line, man. They they go against the best guys in the world, you know, every day. And that makes us better, too, you know, and we have guys that are experienced guys. Hudson’s played a lot of football. Uh GVR has played a lot of football. JMSs is going to be a star in this league. And how he communicates is efficiency of how he communicates, you know. Uh Run has been playing the game for a long time. He’s he’s uh he’s in his blood, you know. You know, he knows how to play the game. Uh and and and so I think Germaine too, you know, he’s he’s a lock down right tackle. He can do a lot of special things. And we got guys that with depth coming off the bench too that have great experience and great talent. So I think we just got a lot of great confidence. I think Karm’s a great teacher of the game. Um and uh you know they create that space for us. Allows us to make a lot of throws. Russ, you’ve been around so long. I’m sure you had some type of expectation as to what you thought would happen in the preseason opener from what did happen. Better, worse, the same. Yeah, I think you always assess the film. We’re watch the film, study it. I think there’s a lot of good things today. there’s always things that we can get better at. That’s the constant journey and constant quest for knowledge and and understanding that we’re always searching for. So, um listen, it’s it’s uh you know, we we have three of these preseason games and luckily we were able to win the first one. Not luckily, but we we established ourselves to be able to win the first one. Second second one’s coming up. We’ll get ready for that. And just I think it’s a championship approach is just every every time you step between the white lines, it matters. And there’s no days off. There’s no like um you know, one matters more than the other. Obviously, as they go keep going and you get tighter and tighter later. Yeah. Um but I think that if they all if they all matter to you and to us gives us a great chance and so I think we established that today and we got to do it again. Russ, what about the what about the the progression of you setting the tone to start the game then Jackson maybe carrying it carrying it over through to finish this first half. Yeah, I I loved how we went for it on fourth and one. I loved how we competed. I love how I mean Juan Del’s route on the side that was a big chunk big play. We made some good plays. is I think Gennó knocking the field goal down getting back into field goal range um after a penalty just staying poised not panicking you know I think that’s a big part of championship teams too how do you you respond to adversity and I think we did that um you know I think that you know offensively you know Jackson stepped back in I think they got stopped and then he came back in got a touchdown and then fast forward we were able to create some momentum and then I think Jameus came in made a great throw um you know in the back corner what a snag I mean just two plays in a row and then you know Tommy did a great jobs, you know, keeping that pressure on them. So, um, I think our defense did a great job, though. That turnover was huge for us to recover that fumble. Got to give the defense credit to give us a chance to close the game out. You know, I’m excited to look back on the tape. Look at the things I can clean up. Um, feel like, you know, guys are making plays out there. It was good energy on the sideline and, uh, you know, hopefully we can just continue to stack stack wins and get in the habit of it. Could you take us through the touchdown pass to Humphrey? Yeah. Um, you know, me and him have been, you know, if you’ve been following along, me and him have been connecting a lot, you know, during camp and whatnot. And he’s been a great contested catcher on on go balls. So, uh, I liked my matchup one-on-one, and he was able to win over the top and, uh, made a great play. Coach Dable said the operation would be the most critical thing he wanted to see from you today. How did you feel about the cleanliness of the operation? Yeah, I felt good. Look at Chill. Sorry, you just shocked me. Uh, I felt good about it. Um, you know, it was kind of my first time doing like a silent cadence, uh, in a road game atmosphere. So, um, you know, we we did have a few pre- snap penalties, uh, you know, that we got to grow on and continue to, uh, improve on those things, but I was happy overall about it. And, uh, you know, I was I was really happy with how our O line played. Uh, I don’t think that we had a sack all game if I’m right. So, uh, they played amazing and I was I was really happy with operation. You showed your daring a little bit there on a couple of those runs. Yeah, a little bit. A little bit. People haven’t seen all of it though, so um you know, we we’ll continue to be smart with it for sure. Yak for not sliding on that scramble. I think Dave likes it to be honest. Um but it was more of my teammates. They’re like, “Hey, like we don’t need to see you uh take any of those extra shots, so make sure you’re sliding.” Um but yeah, Javall said you called the performance mid. Is that is that true? Did you really say that? We’re all sitting here raving about it and you called it mid. I just felt like the only reason that we stopped ourselves from scoring touchdowns were just some of those third downs and not converting. And um I feel like, you know, personally, like I’m I’m really hard on myself. So in those moments, like I want to capitalize on that. You know, those game those possessions in those crunch time situations, you know, really deter game. So um like I said, I I feel like I can do a lot more. Um but I was happy with uh with how the guys played around me. How did the game meet your expectations in terms of the speed, the quality of the play? Um maybe things that you thought you might see or didn’t see. Yeah, I thought it was really cool that I was able to go out there early. Um I think one of my, you know, a few of my drives, you know, a lot of their ones were out there, so you know, kind of feeling the, you know, the play speed of it all. And obviously, you know, preseason’s a little different with how much, you know, defenses are going to incorporate and put in and whatnot. But um you know there is definitely a little bit faster but you know I’ve had a lot of great practice uh you know going against our guys each and every day. So um you know just going to try to continue to grow. Practice you don’t get confidence in the pocket. It seemed like when there was pressure you evaded it. I stayed down the field just I mean that’s it’s rare to see that from a rookie. Yeah I just um I just trust those guys. Uh I trust you know I’ve been able to you know sit in that pocket clean in practices and I think that there’s been a few things where people are like always holding on the ball uh pretty long but you know how I see it is I’ve been having great protection so I can do those things and uh I just you know really you know big shout out to those big boys up front for keeping it clean and um you know I know guys were going to get open right when I was about to get hit or whatever it may be but uh I’m I’m comfortable sit sitting in there when when the windows and and the pressure gets on top gets on though you’re not getting hit in the mouth on the touchdown pass that guy was one step from hitting you in the mouth. Uh it’s been a while since that. You know, you haven’t done that since college. How did that feel? Why were you able to stand in there and take that hit? Cuz I just I knew the opportunity that we were going to have one-on-one with LJ went over the top and um you know, a lot of times, you know, those are some of the biggest plays in the games. So, you know, just in those split seconds being able to get the ball off and you’re about to get hit. I think it was TJ Sanders who hit me and uh you know, I’ve been hit by him a few times in college. So, u it was it’s kind of funny how it came full circle and we talked about that after. Did you even see the the play where you’re able to see the completion of the play or did you have to wait until afterwards to see replays? Honestly, I haven’t even seen the play. I just I kind of just blacked out and I was just super pumped. So, I was trying to get down there to celebrate with the guys. What were your emotions promising day? I mean, end of the day. Sorry. As starts go, huh? As starts go, how how promising was this as a, you know, start for you, a preseason debut? I mean, I I expect myself to play good, you know, whenever I’m on the field. you know, I don’t expect myself to not play good. So, uh, I was just trying to, you know, operate the offense and and get the ball out of my hands pretty quickly to get, um, guys the ball in space for them to make plays. And I thought they did a great job at it. But, um, you know, just going to try to stack these and and the more reps that I feel like I’m going to get, I’m going to get more and more comfortable. I was just curious about your emotions entering the day, you know, first time on an NFL field against another team. Um, just just describe the day and, you know, leading up to getting into the game. Yeah, I was just super excited. I mean, my parents were here, so um you know, them taking the red eye, you know, last night, not getting any sleep and being here, you know, meant the world to me. But I felt, you know, really prepared coming into this week and just the preparation I put into each and every day. So, um, you know, I felt like, you know, when I got out there on the field, it was just football at that point. Take her necklace back. Shoot, I forgot to wear it. But, you know, I’m going to put that back in in the routine for sure. Three pass rush opportunities, three pressures created. Is that as good an opportunity to debut what as you’ve been off for? Yeah, I had fun. I wish I got to play a little bit more, but like I said, I’m just glad we got the win. A couple of those reps came against Deion Dawkins, who’s a pretty established and good player in the NFL. I mean, what were your thoughts? And one of them looked like a win for you, so to get that against him. Yeah, I I I I treat every opponent the same. It doesn’t matter who I’m going against. I like to get work and put my best against anybody. Did you want that sack, though? Did you wish that was a sack when you blew by Dawkins? We got the win. That’s all I’m worried about. When Jackson played Yeah. I loved it. I feel like uh I noticed like before the game like his energy, his excitement, I knew he was going to go out there and ball out. What did you think of that throw? The touchdown throw. Yeah, I was out when I seen I went to go celebrate with him. It was fun to watch. I know it wasn’t a ton of snaps, but the speed of the game, was it what you expected or anything different? Um about the same. I wish I got to play more, but it was about the same. You’re a guy who a lot of guys and you have talked about how you like to have a plan and you kind of set guys up in your pass rush. So playing limited snaps kind of eliminates that a little bit. Did you Were you able to get any kind of rhythm in those little snaps or Yeah, I felt like I um I had a pretty good like pregame warm up and stuff. So I try to come out already warmed up, you know, like during the game I feel like I had a good had a good little rotation. You know, even with fully padded practice as you’re playing th you got to pull up as a defensive player. How great was it to be able to go full boore on a play? Yeah, that’s something I look forward to. So, I hope like next week can come a little bit quicker so we can uh you know get back out there uh going live sacking a quarterback so we can get into that. Any thoughts on the joint practices that are coming up? I know you mentioned it a little bit the other day, but to come off a game and then go right back into joint practices around Yeah, we going to get into that. Uh sure after we done celebrating this win, go back get back to New York and just focus on our next opponent.
