Minnesota Vikings News Dump (8.10.2025) | First Preseason Game in the Books!

[Music] going on Jer to Rome. It’s beautiful Sunday. Birds are chirping and stuff and it’s time for another Vikings news dump. So, uh this would have got done would have had winners and losers and all that stuff yesterday, but um daddy had some social engagements to go to. It happens. But, uh we will winners and losers at some point today. Uh, and overall it’s like the preseason injuries aside, overall pretty happy about things like guys stepped up and you’re you’re starting to see some players have some stratification like which guy’s going to make the 53, which may not, right? And of course the the centerpiece on Saturday was quarterback one, JJ McCarthy, you know, making his uh preseason debut for the season. Of course, had the one preseason game last year against the Raiders. It’s fantastic stuff and all all the talk is about him and obviously it’s going to be overanalyzed to death but that’s certainly part and parcel about things. And now basically McCarthy’s one drive field goal drive it’s it’s a roarshack test. If you’re in on JJ check the box you’re in. You’re good to go. If you think JJ sucks and he’s a bust and then you’re like boo. Uh he can’t even get in the end zone against uh the Texans second team defense whatever. Boo. But overall, I was pretty impressed. Like it it it checked the boxes of of things that you want McCarthy to do. He’s able to get the team out of the huddle, was able to scan the line of scrimmage. He even audible uh once or twice. His communication with Ryan Kelly is on point in terms of protections. Was able to move, you know, pick up that fourth down, which is great. Uh had, you know, picked up uh two other ones through the air. Uh the connection with Jordan Addison quick and often. Uh you know, three for 33 yards. Uh the the fourth completion he had was the hand behind the last scrimmage. Lost some yards is what it is. Uh and and yes, he he did miss slightly high and then one to Lucky Jackson on the on the skinny post. But overall, so the Vikings started off the drive at throwing 12, which through penalty and all that stuff. And also remember a touchback gets you the 35. So I don’t know. Uh but the Vikings did have a 13 play 58 yard drive ate up six minutes. ended up in points and objectively that’s a successful drive that happened regular season. You’re gonna be good to go. Ah, but it was against the Texans backups. Well, McCarthy also didn’t have Daras and also didn’t have Justin Jefferson. So, it’s whatever there, right? Like I said, it is really a roar shack test and it confirmed your biases one way or the other. If you’re in on JJ, if you’re out on JJ, that’s what that that’s where you are, right? Also, Justin Jefferson, can’t wait to get him out the field. have him ready for week one. Gonna be good to go. PA on the mic. It’s looking good. Looking a little red. I feel like PA definitely got some sunshine. Uh and also if he grows that beard out by December is like do do we got some Santa vibes going on? It’s giving Chris Kringle. Yeah. Also speaking of quarterback. So slinging Sam Howell got up off the mat. He was really good. Uh 11 to 13 for a buck05 100 kan 100.3 rating al also uh snuck one in uh from the goal line. Good good second effort there. And how there have been some concerns about how especially when he basically got demoted uh to from the second team by Brett Ripen in camp a week ago, but he strung together, you know, stacking up some good days at training camp as well as obviously here in a game situation preseason looking good. So I I feel okay. I feel a lot better about how than I did about a week ago uh for the quarterback two spot, right? And also quarterback three spot. All right. So Max Brazmer, of course, the Gophers put this out. It’s great. Uh five of eight for 47. Had a touchdown. Uh had multiple would have had multiple touchdowns, but they got called back. 118.1 quarterback rating. And the thing about Rob Bros, it’s more than just the stats. So it it’s the same as with Howell. It’s the same as with McCarthy. You could tell like all three of the guys look comfortable operating the offense. And with Bromer, you know, a UDFA rookie, yes. Playing with threes against threes and all that stuff, but overall like could you see Bromer being a consistent NFL backup quarterback? Yes. I I think so. I think his accuracy, getting rid of the ball, comfort in the pocket, uh, even when things are breaking down. I think that’s all important. It’s all good stuff. Yeah. Uh, and also stars, you could talk about, you could talk about Jordan look really good. Addison’s frankly, Addison Grard might be having the best camp of any Viking out there. Also, you could talk about Jordan Mason looked really good with his fist full of carries, four car uh, four carries for 20 yards. just also was in there in pass pro spots was pretty pretty good to go. Uh but Xavier Scott, all right, so I I I know that Ty Chandler, the Vikings going to try to give him every opportunity to secure running back three, but Xavier Scott 7 for 40, 5.7 breaking tackles out here. The pride of Maine, the pride of Yukon out here, he he’s very he’s not your he’s not an orthodox running back, right? He’s a converted wide receiver. kind of has like a a rugby body shape like he’s 61 and 219. Well, not even rugby. Maybe like Aussie rules football or something like that. And he’ll play some good special teams. Uh caught a ball for 11 yards as well. Good in pass, bro. Like he’s I love Xavier Scott, right? It’s clear the Vikings do uh as well. So, it’s it’s fun to see him put together on the field. Also, defensively, Gabriel Murphy, right? So, the Vikings have an embarrassment of riches on the edge with AVG, Granard, Diamond Dallas Turner, Bo Richter, and Gabriel Murphy. This is good here. All right. So, it kind of stunk because Gabe Murphy had a knee injury last year that basically cost him all of training camp as well as preseason. But Murf, Murf dog, let’s go. Uh, four pressures, one and a half sacks, three total tackles, five quarterback hits. So, Kenna and Slovis, formerly USC/BYU whatever, as well as Graham Mertz. I mean, it was it was just a bad day. Just a bad day all around. Plus, the the Viking second team defense, they had a thank you first drive, but then they really buckled down cuz they basically got dog walked in the end zone uh by the by Davis Mills and the Texan second team offense. But they got things together. Gabe Murphy, again, I think that there’s a world where the Vikings, you have to keep five outside linebackers on the 53. Yes, it’s perfectly fine and plausible. Also, uh, Khalif Hassie, who has made some noise the last couple days in training camp. So, he’s a corner. He’s a safety. Been primarily lined up at safety with the Vikings, third team defense, but you know, got an opportunity today as you know, Matelis and Harrison Smith were out. So, a lot of snaps up in the air. Uh, and Hassie had two picks on the day. Second one was off a deflection, but good ball tracking ability, good ball skills. You had had some nice had three PBUs on the day. Like we said, uh, Mertz and, uh, Slovis did, ain’t it, right? So, so good to see there. Also, Ambry Thomas came away with an interception as well. And injuries wise, this sucks, man. This sucks. Uh, Kevin Seafford, ESPN. Uh, Rond Del Moore has a pretty significant left knee injury per Kevin Oonnell. He said the play had some characteristics of a hip drop tackle, but would seek more clarity. Given Moore’s injury history, Okonnell said today was heartbreaking. And it sucks because Rondell had an ACL last year at the beginning of training camp with the Falcons, became a free agent, and you signed here, fresh start, a former second round pick, the pride of Purdue, and he was just starting to to get some things together right in training camp in practice, as well as, you know, coach had said that he had the inside track uh for the punt return job, and now, yeah, didn’t look good. It it it look really bad. So, your prayers up for Rondale and stinks, man. Yeah. Also, uh, Vikings fan page. Uh, Vikings outside Vikings offensive lineman Zeke Coral has a right ankle fracture per Kevin McConnell. That’s two Minnesota offensive linemen that have suffered serious injuries so far. Uh, Matt Nelson also tore his bicep on Monday’s night practice, I believe. And with Coral, he went, he was from Notre Dame, uh, NC State as well last year and had been hoping to, you know, get some traction along the offensive line, maybe make the practice squad, maybe push Jurgens for that backup center spot. But yeah, he posted uh a great Bible verse. Uh, count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds. For you know that the testing of your faith procure produces steadfastness and let steadfastness have its full effect that you may be perfect and complete lacking in nothing. So, it’s going to come back stronger. You’re going to get after things going to be placed on season ending IR. You know, Rondell probably too. So, you know, hoping the best for uh Z Coral, Rondell Moore, full recoveries, all that stuff, right? But of course, it seems like McCarthy probably isn’t going to play in the next two preseason games. Joint practices with the Patriots uh this upcoming week on Wednesday, Thursday are going to be huge. Going to be huge for number nine. Uh but it’s perfectly fine. I mean, we got a taste of football back. You know, we we got PA looking like Papo. It’s good times. Big time stuff, right? So, everyone stay healthy. Everyone look good to go. And then week one, Monday Night Football D. Whoop the bears ass. It’s going to be good, man. Anyways, that’s it. That’s it. Sunday Vikings News Dump. You guys are the best. You know what to do. Skull production value.

  1. Why can't we be in the middle about JJ? His performance wasn't great and it wasn't terrible. Other QBs showed out better than his one possession so that's that. Over hyping and over hating on him has been so dang exhausting.

  2. was happy to see JJ get some reps. Howell did ok, I was more impressed with Brosmer. He has a really quick release, processes well and was pretty accurate. We might have something there. Z. Scott looked really good as well.

  3. It's hilarious seeing many JJ haters came out of the woodwork after one preseason game. Lol! I'm going to keep saying it until my face is blue, you CAN'T judge any QB after one preseason game. I remember last year when Caleb Williams lit up the Bills' vanilla defense and the national media went crazy. Heck, some Vikings fans came on this channel and believe Caleb was going to be a problem for us. 😂

  4. I am JJ McCarthy fan from the jump! I just want him to keep his knees protected throughout the season. I hope he wears a compression knee sleeve during games. Also, Murphy had 5 QB hits! That's just amazing considering no one else on either team had multiple QB hits.
