Immediate Postgame Reaction to Steelers 31-25 Win Over Jaguars | Steelers Extra Point

[Music] Hello and welcome to the neighborhood Ford store. Steelers extra point. The Steelers kicking off the 2025 preseason in Jacksonville. Check out Mason Rudolph making it look too easy to Darnell Washington who takes it home and puts the first points on the board for the Steelers. They were pretty impressive offensively this evening. Final score 3125 here in Jacksonville. I’m AJ Ross joined by former Steeler Raone Foster, the big ragu. I got to give you big props though because you made your debut as the sideline reporter for the Steelers radio broadcast tonight. How cool was it being back on the sidelines with Mike C and those guys? It was real cool, man. Being able to see some of the guys I play with that still around. Cam Hayward, TJ Watt, still around Chris Boswell. So, a lot of familiarity with the staff, the coaches, even the medical staff, man. Well, I was really excited to be here tonight. I’ll be quite honest with you. Just fun, too, especially when you win. You know, I I also have to ask because we were saying, you know, just how effective they were offensively. What really struck you about that side of the ball? It it was the efficiency. I’ll say this too of all the quarterbacks. Each one of those guys played a role tonight, and I thought that was super unique in all the things that you was asking them to do. Without Aaron Rogers, how was this offense going to flow? And I got to give a lot of a lot of credit to guys like uh Darnell Washington. Really good early on. We just saw that highlight right there with the catch from Mason Rudolph. It was phenomenal to see him be that big go that high up and nobody else can grab the ball but him and two a a guy like Roman Wilson needed some catches, needed some reps, needed to show his playmake ability and it was there tonight. Tip of the cap to both of those guys, man. And of course AJ, I got to mention the big boys up front for the first time out. A lot of questions about their youth, how they were going to gel together, and I thought they put together some really good drives today and the offense rolled well. We know we got to send it over to Missy Matthews who has our Ticket Master postgame interview. She’s standing by with Skyler Thompson. All right, Skyler, take me through what tonight meant to you and your performance. Man, I was just uh I was super excited to get out and compete today. Um, you know, coming into a a new organization, new team, kind of a little bit of a fresh start for me. I was just excited to go play some football and have on my teammates and definitely did that today. Safe to say the two-minute drill at the end of the first half and then some spectacular throws in the second. Uh what do you make of what you were able to do personally? Yeah, well we were just able to get into a rhythm and it started with with uh Arthur just putting us in some great play calls and guys made plays for me. You know, we got into a rhythm and we’re just everybody was in sync and uh we just made some made a lot of plays and and got it got in the end zone there. It was uh it was a great kind of first drive for me, you know, second drive uh just to get into a rhythm of the game. So, it was it was a really good job by all of us out there. What uh guy young guy out there uh would you give the gold star to for their performance today? You know, I’m I don’t know if I can single one guy out. I’m I’m just proud of all the rookies. You know, I’ve been in their position before coming into their first NFL game and the nerves, the you know, the performance, you know, just trying to perform well, all that kind of stuff. And I thought all of our rookies did a great job today. Um, and you know, just taking one play at a time, you know, and if if they had a bad play, being able to go on to the next one and just having a short-term memory. I thought all of our rookies performed really well. All right, thanks so much. Congrats again. Yeah, thank you. All right, guys. Back to you. Thank you again, Missy. That interview was brought to you by Ticketmaster, the official marketplace of the NFL. Visit ticketmaster.com/steelers. Now, Skyler Thompson is a guy that, you know, is no stranger to some big moments, you know, with his prior time in Miami. What struck you most about his calmness in the pocket and his efficiency? It was that it was the poise. as he mentioned earlier in his interview with Missy right there, uh, with his ability to come into a new place and really be in a position just hold his own. He was good in the pocket, being able to deliver the ball, zip on the ball and again, it’s everybody has something dirty about their job and he was able to sit back and take those hits and deliver to guys like Trey Surman right here. Man, it was phenomenal for him. Again, I don’t know how close this competition is between he and Mason, but legitimately he made some money tonight in a lot of different ways with the way he played. And look at these stats that he put up tonight. Um, again, talking about his efficiency, 2428, 233 passing yards, three rushing touchdowns. Um, yes, abs. It was phenomenal. The best part about that is a zero. No interceptions tonight. He took some shots, man, from the guys that were able to just push him towards the ground, but that’s a part of the job in playing quarterback in the NFL. A tip of the cap to him and he was really phenomenal. I felt like what he was presented with tonight. [Music] Well, we’re headed to the break here on the neighborhood Ford store. Oh, I’m sorry. Actually, we’re going to social media because we want to make sure that the fans, we asked you some questions earlier tonight about who stood out to you. And we asked you if you could use the hashtag SteelersNation and we would put this in our broadcast tonight. And so, we want to uh make sure that those are included. They’re presented by South College, proud partner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. And coming up next on the neighborhood Ford store Steelers Extra Point. When we come back, we will chat it up with the guys who called the game, Bob and Charlie. Right after the break, [Music] the neighborhood Ford dealers extra point is brought to you in part by Remax Select Realy. Remax voted the most trusted real estate agents. And it’s time now to bring in the guys who called the game in the booth. our very own Bob Pompani and Charlie Batch to get their take on tonight’s game. Guys, what’s your thoughts? Well, a lot of good thoughts, I thought, AJ. I mean, when you look at it from a quarterback point of view, knowing there was no Aaron Rogers, knowing that Howard got injured and it was going to be Mason Rudolph and Skyler Thompson, and both really did well, especially in that passing game right off the bat. Yeah, they both should be excited about what they did tonight. Mason Rudolph did a nice job leading the team up and down, putting the team into the end zone. And of course, that gave way to Skyler Thompson there, and he put together a lot of great drives. The one that really stood out to me was actually him standing in in the pocket with pressure delivering that final touchdown. Yeah, that was a great play by a guy who’s been around uh for sure. And I thought Darnell Washington getting in the end zone is something I want to see a lot more of. The mount uh not without the slam dunk over the goalpost. Now, it’s time to take a look at our final stats presented by NSS Life. NSS Life featuring lowcost life insurance and high yielding annuities. So, Charlie, your best takeaway on this uh collection of numbers. Yeah, I’m looking right at third downs, eight of 13 by the Steelers offense. And when you hold the Jacksonville Jaguars to three of 10, that is the difference in the game. And when you Mike Tomlin should be proud about that particular stat only because he harps on that throughout the course of practice. Third down is key. And they were able to deliver today. Yeah, there’s no question. and they made some big throws in that. And in that first drive, Mason Rudolph went seven for seven, which leads us to our quarterback analysis brought to you by Cleveland Brothers. So, Charlie, when you see both of these guys look cool, calm under pressure, they’ve been around uh and they feel comfortable in their roles. They really did. They had complete control of the offense, no pre- snap penalties, able to get in and out, no force timeouts because they weren’t able to deliver the play call. But when you see the quarterbacks moving around, great play call there by Arthur Smith on the screen. And then the play I talked about moments ago, St. Skyler Thompson able to deliver that touchdown pass. And when you see him celebrating in the manner that he did, that’s when you’re just like, yes. A lot of the pressure is off of him at this particular point because in the first preseason game, you want to put on your best performance. No question. He stood in there, made the throw, and he knew it was going to be right on the money. Pretty good coverage on the other end of it. Uh but the bottom line is they got the job done and the Steelers win impressively tonight, especially from an offensive point of view. Well, thank you so much, Bob. Now we’re going to go to coach Mike Tomlin who’s at the podium. Uh some of that. Um I thought we did a nice job of not beating our own butt. Um we kept pre- snap penalties virtually to a minimum. I think we had one. Um we we played a pretty clean game for a first time out. We gave a lot of people a lot of opportunities and that’s what this is about. It was good to see some offensive players tackling on special teams, defensive players blocking on special teams. will comb through that really closely. Um, and to top it all off, man, we kind of got through the game virtually injury-free. Um, I think Cam McCutchen um, got taken out with a soft tissue injury, maybe a hamstring that needs to be evaluated, but other than that, uh, we’re pretty clean and so productive night on a lot of fronts and obviously we’ll comb through the tape, man, and and learn from it in a lot of ways, both players and coaches, and and hopefully be better the next time out. Um, I’ll pause and open up for questions. Anyone? All right. Thank you. That was easy, man. I’m telling you, short and simple. What questions, but you know what? He He’s a guy that obviously that’s good. Those I mean, timeless. That was good. I’m not sure if the Steelers going to the Super Bowl will win at all or what, but no questions at all. That is that’s that’s the first for me. I’ve never had that happen. But he brings up a good point. I think the most important point of it all, no injuries. I mean, like you said, there was a soft tissue injury. Nothing that sets you back going into next week. And I think that’s the most important part. And he brings up a part I feel like we leave this aspect out when it comes down to the special teams, too. I mean, to the uh to the preseason, that’s the special teams. Like he mentioned a lot of offensive guys having to do defensive things. And that’s a part of their job when you’re trying to be one of those 53 men. It’s not that many positions available. So, you got to be able to go two way. A wide receiver might have to make a tackle. You might have a running back that’s got to get down the field. And it was good to have him mention that in these moments because those those types of uh duties get you jobs, too. As you talk about those moments, we asked the fans who stood out to you tonight, who was those or those players making those moments. Here’s some of your responses. Real impressed with Skyler Thompson. He’s been very accurate and great decision maker. and Roman Wilson, definitely a name we heard a lot, and Beanie on defense and Skyler on offense. All great responses. We really appreciate the fans out there participating in this. These are presented by South College, proud partner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. And coming up next on the Neighborhood Ford store extra point, we’re going to have much more game analysis from the one and only Raone Roth Foster and other experts as well. The neighborhood Fordstore Steelers Extra Point is presented by Xfinity Stream Life Sports from the best seat in the house. Expinity, bring on the good stuff. It’s time now to revisit our immaculate prediction. We asked you guys over under and we asked Raone. 260 and a half Steelers total yards. I mean, it was a landslide. It was a landslide. You saw it was most fascinating about it. I thought it was going to come on the ground. It was actually through the air. That was a phenomenal night for the guys throwing the ball around the night. 367 blew right past that. AJ, that’s amazing. We’re actually going to take a look at some of the highlights from tonight’s game in a few, but I mean really that efficiency was just really awesome to watch. It was and it started early. Also, check out Mason Rudolph. We shown this to Darnell Washington and Skyler Thompson. Oh my gosh. just clutch and you’ve got to Cam Little 70 yards off the field. If you’re an NFL fan, you like that right there. That is phenomenal. The kickers are not the same as they were in the years past. Okay. And then of course Trey and Henderson right there. That was big time score by him. And head top is what the kids call level right there. Okay. Absolutely love that. And a celebration there at the end. Well, we’re actually going to show you also the game summary so we can break down a little more some of the numbers from this game. again. Mason Rudolph got the start, but uh you know, rookie Max Hurlman, two receptions, 29 yards, had an awesome touchdown reception, the back flip. Skyler Thompson, we’ve been as we’ve been mentioning, very efficient. And Keshan Williams, a lot of guys brought attention to themselves today, man. And I’ll say this too, Skyler Thompson being the position that he was in, I think behind Will Will Will Howard in training camp and considering the opportunity he was given. Again, you never know what your pathway is going to be in this league and you always have to stay ready. 20 for 28, 233, and three touchdowns. That’s winning football. Again, no turnovers, not even an almost turnover. He ended up having a sack early. I later in the game, and the offense was able to get back on the ball. So again, at the end of the day, the score sheet matters. It was the zero as turnovers with three touchdowns. And again, you mentioned Max Herman. I’m going to be quite honest with you, a standing back flip like that, I never dreamed of. Never dreamed of it. Okay. He avenger or something. He has to be. I’m telling you, there’s somebody looking at his athleticism right now said we can use that guy again. I’m telling you, clutch in those moments. But veteran presence by Mason early on. Somebody that’s been in this system before, been in this building before. So, he was able to capitalize on a moment for him too on a short night. We’re going to have much more coming up on the neighborhood Ford store Steelers. Extra point, including an interview with Mason Rudolph coming up next. And we’ve been talking about Mason Rudolph getting the start tonight in black and gold. And he was back with our own Missy Matthews postgame. It was. Yeah. Um Arthur did a good job of calling some aggressive shots over the middle, you know, first couple plays and first drive. So, uh Roman Wilson made a nice really nice catch to kind of get us get us going. So, uh it was fun. Cool for you to be back on. Really cool. Really fun. Um good to be back in the black and gold, man. just uh a lot of friends, a lot of dear dear friends and you know coaches that I’ve spent a lot of time with and there’s just a level of comfortability there that um you can’t really replace. So, anyone else? Perfect. Wonderful. Thanks, guys. Brief just like his coach, but he talked about that level of comfortability and that it was really exhibited tonight with the stats you see here below. Two efficient drives by Rudolph. I mean, what more can you say, Raone? Exactly. Everybody played a part tonight that you needed to see play a part. Skyler Thompson threw his three scoring drive. Darnell Washington, big guy, big impact. We knew that was the case, man. It was I don’t know what’s going on with these guys with these short press conferences and nobody asking questions. I need to go holler. They must have a good meal on the bus waiting for them. That’s got to be what it is. They said it all on the field. They don’t need to say anything else. Absolutely. It’s still training camp mode right now. Well, we’re almost out of time here on the neighborhood Ford store Steelers Extra Point, but when we come back, we will preview next week’s game against the Bucks. Plan ahead and never miss a moment as a member of Steelers Nation. We have a ton of fun new annual events planned for fans in the 2025. Visit our events calendar at steelers.com/events for early access to details and tickets. Now Ramon, one position group that we haven’t talked about as much is, you know, the running backs group and the guys that are, you know, kind of second string on this team that we’re going to be keeping an eye on, and that’s presented by Citizens Bank. Let’s look at some of the numbers with those guys. Evan Hall for sure, man. Second season here. I was really impressed by Max Heroldman, too. And then Lou Nichols ended the game really well. These are the guys, including DJ Thomas Jones, who are in a position that that the offensive guys got to be good in special teams. And that’s going to be crucial for those guys the rest of this preseason, specifically in those games. And the other side of this, too, they have a joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Those guys got to show well against that group right there because they’re very strong, but specifically in stadium, being able to make tackles when they are the ones getting tackled more times than not. Uh, this is where they carve out a careers for themselves right here, AJ. And it’s so clutch because you know the Steelers love to set the tone with the run game. So it’s really something to keep an eye on. But that’s all the time we have tonight on the neighborhood for store Steelers extra point. We want to thank the team, the coaches, and the staff for all their help in making this production great. Thank you as well for watching.

  1. Any questions? And nothing but crickets. Let that be a lesson to you Mike Tomlin. If you don't like stupid questions from the Press which you get a lot of, then have your team ready to play! * 7

  2. Skylar thompson, talked about making the best of a very unfortunate situation with Will Howard. If he keeps this up that's going to be a hard decision or maybe not so hard

  3. I didn’t like that 70 yard field goal… That was a bogus call… There could’ve no way been a second left on the clock… There was 5 when the play started….the quarterback took more than two seconds to get rid of the ball ……and the guy that caught the ball wasn’t down. He wasn’t touched yet. Definitely time should’ve ran out.

  4. Jacksonville played All their starters until 7 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. The Steelers barely played Any starters on offense or defense. If our Backups can dominate, imagine how our 1st string players will look. I was Hoping to see Rogers with 1st team players for a couple positions. Next week we Definitely need to see the starters play at least 2 rounds.

  5. Ima be mad if yall dont sign keshawn williams, skylar thompson, lew nichols, Roc taylor, maybe mason rudolph and will howard to the 53 man roster.
