This report just opened a very interesting door for Montreal…

This opens a very interesting door for the Montreal Canadiens. As we all know, the 2C talk has been going crazy as of late. There have been new reports out of Boston surrounding two of their centers. Two guys that have been mentioned with Montreal before as guys that could very well fill that hole in Casey Middlestat and Pavle Zaka. We got to dive into the newest reports out of Boston and how Montreal is in a very interesting position to take advantage. But some downsides to it as well. But it’s not just that. Alex Kerier and some other Habs players were at a charity tournament and Ker had a few amazing things to say including a very interesting thing on Patrick Lion. All that coming up on this episode of Habs Digest and we’ll start there. So you can see here took it from the Reddit Alex Kerier, Joe Valeno and Yakob Doves at a charity hockey game yesterday for the Montreal Canadians Children Foundation. And this is just awesome to see these guys always out there. And there was some people there interviewing it on NHL.com which I’ve linked down below. Again, always check out these articles that we’re talking about in the videos because there’s more to them than we show. I want you to give the author the credit they deserve. Alex Kerier said a few interesting things. And uh you know, he said this about the vision of the Montreal Canadians. And I really liked what he had to say here. He said, “Clearly, the expectations for the team will be different. Other teams will approach us differently. They’ll be more ready to face us. We are still one of the youngest teams in the league. We still have a lot to learn, but it’s exciting to grow our core. We know we’re heading in the right direction.” And you know, this is something that has been mirrored top to bottom in the Habs organization. No, this is nothing new right here what I’m showing you. But to hear this sentiment, like to see him smiling and saying all these things while so happy and while going on to say other things as well about the defense situation, pretty candid if you ask me, saying it’s good to have internal competition when they’re talking about adding to the right decor with Noah Dobson. He said it’s good to have internal competition and it’s true that we were lacking right-handed defenders. Let’s be honest, it’s just good for the team when everyone is fighting for a spot. It makes us improve collectively. It will help the team succeed. Now, these are also all translated in from French to English. I’ve done that. If you see any things that you don’t agree with in terms of the translation, hey, pick a bone with me. That’s okay. But I think this is pretty accurate. And it’s really cool for him to say, well, something we’ve always been saying here on the channel, right? That internal competition just makes you get better collectively. And that doesn’t just happen in the NHL. Yes, it’s cool here happening with Kerier bringing in Dobson. Kerier knows, hey, that probably means fewer minutes for me. But it also happens in Laval. Something we’ve talked about a lot, right? Joshua Wa, Owen Beck, Oliver Kapp, and all these guys on the fringe, especially with the addition of Joe Valeno, but then you got Rhybacker down there. So, really interesting stuff there. Just wanted to touch on that, but I wanted to uh to focus mostly on this quote about line eight because he was talking about how, you know, there’s the new policy where you won’t have to wear suits every game. He said, you know, most players you’ll probably see still see wearing suits, but he said, “Oh, Pat, he’s going to be on fire. That’s for sure. He’s going to score 50 with those outfits.” So look, I mean, Carrie, again, just a bit of praise about Patrick L. And do I think he’s serious saying L could score 50? Well, I mean, you know, really the the suit thing only comes into effect, I think, before next season. So if he’s saying it, it would really be for L next season. But regardless, clearly there’s a lot of hope for Patrick Lane. I watching these one-times this offseason. Always the first guy on the ice. You always see his teammates talking about L. Now he was asked about LA in particular, but you see the teammates praising him all the time. They know the talent he has. So, just a nice little fun thing there from Kier before we get into the trade rumors. Leave some love for him. All this great stuff surrounding the Habs down below. But time to get into this. Now, there’s a couple players I want to mention and Paval Zaka and Casey Middlestad. You guys know we’ve talked about both of these guys at length. Middlestat a guy a little more at the trade deadline because he was eventually traded, but he was shopped for a while and we were like, you know, maybe we could get a center pushing for the playoffs. Nah, we didn’t end up doing it. And he didn’t have the best end of the season again in Boston. like he really struggled on a struggling team. And Pavle Zaka as well is another guy we’ve talked about a lot this off seasonason. Maybe not the plan A or plan B, but he absolutely would be a shorterterm fit on a shorter term deal. And I want to start with the Zaka talk because it was uh James Murphy from RG.org. Now, this article is linked below. Both these rumors that I’m well both these reports that I’m bringing up come from this article. So, if you want to see the original source, check it. But James Murphy said, “Trade rumors continue to surround the Boston Bruins with Yonas Corposalo.” Yeah, I’m not linking him to Montreal anytime soon. And Pavle Zaka’s name’s consistently coming up. And we know Pavalzaka has been on the trade block for a while. He was listed as one of the top 25 summer trade board uh trade board targets by Day Pangota in the fourth period. He has a 10 team no trade list and it just turned into an eight team as of July 1st. And Zaka, the reason we’ve talked about him so much is because of how good a fit he is stylistically for Montreal. And a lot of the talk we’ve had about Zaka was before he brought in Joe Valeno, who is another left shot center. But again, Zaka is much better than Valeno. Zaka had 47 points this year on a really bad Bruins team as we know. But the decent Bruins teams the two years before 21 goals in each of the previous two seasons with 59 and 57 points. Not to mention his face off percentage these past two years has been 53 and 55% from a left-hand shot center. Now again, I still think that the floor is just going to be given to Kirby Doc like to say, “Hey, prove it.” But again, a guy like Zaka could absolutely come in and you know, we’ve heard talks about, hey, this could be good for the Montreal Canadians. But to hear Zaka’s name is actively being shopped, you have to imagine if you’re Boston at this point, you’re looking for some futures to some extent, right? And reportedly, I’ll get to the Middlestat thing in a second, but even in the middle trade, they’re looking for prospects. They’re looking for picks, right? That’s what they did in that middle stat trade. That was the main target. It wasn’t Middlestat. And so to know Boston wants futures and to know Montreal has futures, it just makes this all the more likely that if Montreal fancies Pablo Zaka or Casey Middlestat in a second, this is the perfect opportunity to do so, right? Like this is the kind of news you pay attention to if you’re a Montreal Canadians fan. Am I saying that Montreal is linked to these guys officially? No, that is not the report. However, just being a fan, watching this team every single day, absorbing every bit of news, it makes sense to at least be kicking tires. The same thing on the Mason McTavish front. And if you go to the Pavles or the uh the Casey Middlestack quote, it just reveals more about exactly what I was just saying. Here it is here. So, this is again an NHL executive via RG and this is in the article down below. The executive said, “I don’t know how many rumors he’s been in, but I’ve been hearing Casey Middlestat could be on the move again since before the Bruins season even ended.” there was a common feeling that wasn’t that he wasn’t their main target when they traded for him. Zeers in the second round draft pick were and that’s a very interesting thing to hear because Casey Middlestat like look I know Boston they ended up crashing down at the end of the season and Middlestat was having a I don’t want to say rough season with Colorado he was on pace for like a decent year of course after being traded from Buffalo to Colorado in that Bowen Byum trade back in the 2023 24 season. But a guy like Middlestad had a 59 point and a 57 point season backto back in Buffalo and that he just couldn’t quite get it going in Colorado for whatever reason. But this guy is a 15 to20 goal scorer who can get you 55 to 60 points. This past year 40 points in 81 games if you ask me is a bit of an outlier. Now he isn’t amazing on the faceoff dot and faceoffs do matter but he is better than the current centers that we have and like Kirby Dock and Alex New Hook in general and a guy like Middlestat is very skilled. There are other problems with Casey Middlestat where I think he is less of a fit than a Pavl Zaka who is a bit bigger, who plays a little bigger, who is better on the faceoff dot, who has a better history of getting points. Even though if you look their two careerhigh seasons for each of them, 21 goals, 59 points, 21 goals, 57 points. And then for Middlestat, it’s 15 goals, 59 points. 18 goals, 57 points. Milstat’s more of a setup man who doesn’t win as many faceoffs, but again has played a ton of center with with a careerhigh of 49% on the dot way back in 2020 2021 where he put up 22 points in 41 games including 10 goals which is a 20 goal pace. So to hear that both of these guys are still very much involved in rumors just makes me interested. I’m tuning into this. This is not something that I think is going to be imminent from Montreal. I don’t think Kent Hughes is out there saying, “Oh, these are guys we have to go get.” But it it opens a very interesting door. The development got interesting, right? And and I just like looking at these things because at this point in the summer, there’s still guys that are actively being shopped. We know the NHL trade market is going to pick up before the start of the season, or at least we hope so. That seems to be what executives have been saying, people, insiders have been saying. We expect something to pick up. Whether it’s soon or not, who knows? But with the Boston Bruins looking towards the future, having two centers that are on the trade block that could very well be had for not massive returns because the Bruins are looking again towards the future, looking at draft picks, looking at talented young players that can fill the void a few years down the road. A team like Montreal who was in need of centers at this moment just feels like a good trade partner. No, neither of these guys is the ideal 2C target, but do they have to be the ideal target? Well, that’s for you to let me know down below. Do you like the idea of either of these guys? I’d love to hear from you. Because that’ll do it for this episode of Habs Digest. 1. If he's willing to play in Montreal, I think trading for Pavel Zacha makes a lot of sense for the Canadiens. I like his size, his experience, his skill set, and the fact that he has two years left on his deal.

  2. Your volume is fairly low. Dach does not instill any confidence as a center, let alone a winger. Mittelstadt is fairly lackluster on the faceoff dot, but more concerned on his two way play. Considering how often he has been traded, would not be worth the risk.

  3. I think Zacha would be a good addition, we need a decent 2C player for a couple of seasons until either Hage develops or we find a more premium center. For Zacha I could see us giving 1 of many scenarios. The first being Matheson and a 4th, I like Matheson but we do not have proper spot to utilze him. Should he get us a need and helps the other team is unfortunately a reality that works both ways. If Boston is more interested in propects or picks than we could package 2 of Struble, Roy. Kapanen, Beck or Mesar and a 2nd. We have to realize that we need to give up good stuff to get the good stuff we need and I do not think with these players all coming from areas we already have strength will seriously impact our long term needs.

  4. Okay, let's nip this banter in the bud. Bruins players don't usually even consider playing for Montreal. Too much history, too much bad blood. Lucic took considerably less money to NOT have to play for the Habs when he left Boston. Plus, the front offices of each team intensely dislike each other, making trade possibilities less likely than finding a fat guy at a salad bar.

  5. They don’t have to be a perfect fit either trade for a real center now and lose Hage or Reinbacher or go get a stop gap guy like Zacha for a few years until Hage is ready

  6. Volume sounds fine for me…
Zacha sounds pretty good depending on trade cost…
Everything depends on trade cost … I don't think we are at desperation mode just yet … I kinda like that Dach been staying low key amongst all these rumors, I hope he's working out and working on faceoffs… Offensively , we might see best opportunity to see what he can do if it ends up being demidov and Laine as wingers … Got size … Has shown flashes of offensive skills

  7. zacha had a below 50 pts season being the center and on first pp with a top 5 talent in david pastrnak on his wing who had ovef 100pts. hes NOT a good offensive player…never has , never will be. hes a 3rd line player.
