REKAP: ⚾️ Chicago Cubs 3-2 loss to St. Louis Cardinals. ‘This offense is broken! Broken!’

Welcome to the recap of the Cubs 3-2 loss to the
St. Louis Cardinals at Bush Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri on Sunday Night Baseball. I’m David
Kaplan. It’s brought to you by our great partners at Winrust. They are the exclusive home of Cubs
checking. Get your very own Cubs checking account at wintrust.com/cubs or click the QR code on
your screen. Folks, that’s just a terrible, terrible loss. This offense is brutal. Absolutely
brutal. You’re not getting big hits in big spots. You’re not getting anything out of Pete
Cormstrong offensively in the month of August. He has just been awful. And it is what it is. I
know he’s had a very nice year, but my goodness, they had to pinch hit for him in the ninth inning
because a lefty in Jojo Romero and they felt Greg Councel and I agreed with the decision. Guess
what? He’s struggling right now. We’re not going to do it and he used Justin Turner who flew out to
center field. But the Cubs had their opportunities in this game. They absolutely did. Let’s get
into this and uh go through what happened tonight because it is pathetic. And I’ll give you a stat
as well tonight to show you why they should have done more at the trade deadline. It’s also brought
to you by our great partners at Tasty Trade. Stocks, crypto, futures, options. Tastyrade.com.
Open your account there for whatever you trade. Make it Tasty Trade. Uh in the third inning, Pedro
Pahz, who’s not a very good player, hit his first home run on an offspe pitch all season. Shota was
phenomenal tonight. That was the only real mistake that he made until late when they were taking
him out and he had given up a run. Pah homers to center. U and that drives in two and it’s a two
nothing Cardinals lead. In the fifth, Matt Shaw cranks his ninth home run. That’s a two-run shot
with Dansby Swanson aboard. And we’re tied at two. And then we go to the seventh inning. And with two
outs, they get a base hit. They get a stolen base. They get a base hit. There’s your ball game.
32 your final. But the Cubs had opportunities. They’re making sloppy plays. Even if they don’t
come back to bite him uh on that game-winning hit that the Cardinals got in the seventh inning. If
you were watching the ball game, Nolan Gorman gets the hit. Kyle Tucker comes racing in. He’s got no
chance of throwing the guy out. There’s Michael Bush right there, your cuto off guy, and he air
mails him. And guess where the base runner goes? Right to second base. Now, they ended up bringing
in Brad Keller, and he got out of the inning. But that’s beside the point. That is a fundamental
miscue. You hit the freaking cut off, man. PCA, as I said, getting picked off second base. And
then in the ninth inning, they have Justin Turner hit for PCA. Justin Turner flies out. And then
they get traffic on board in the ninth inning. The Cubs had an opportunity to tie this game up
and perhaps take the lead. Here’s what happened in the ninth. Turner flies out. Ian Hap walks.
John Birdie pinch runs for Ian Hap. Birdie can run now. He gets caught stealing second. They
look the Cubs challenge. He’s clearly in there, but did his oven mitt come that far off the
base? It’s hard to tell. So they said the call on the field stands. So now you’ve got nobody on
and two out. Nico her base hit to left. Dansby Swanson infield hit. First and second. Here comes
Matt Shaw. I’m thinking guy’s been sensational defensively tonight. He’s got the only two runs,
a two-run home run. He’s been hitting north of 300 with an OPS over,00 since the All-Star break. And
guess what? He grounds out. Ball game over. Cubs lose. But what pisses me off is, how about this
stat? Since May 25th going into tonight’s game, the Cubs have the second best record in the
National League. The second best. And you didn’t really try to improve your club. You messed around
on the freaking margins. That’s all you did. And your offense is broken. Broken. Looks terrible.
Absolutely awful. Quick look at our Hooters winging it starting pitching matchup. And then
I got more thoughts because I’m just so mad at what I read from Carter Hawkins. I mentioned on
the recap the other day. Just drives me insane. Uh Shota Imanaga six and two/3, four hits, three
runs there. Earned nineks. did not walk a man. And then Brad Keller finished it up for the Cubs.
For the Cardinals, Sunny Gray was outstanding. Seven innings, five hits, two runs, one earned,
seven Ks, a walk, and one home run allowed. And then O’Brien and Jojo Romero finished it off for
Romero. A four out save, his third of the season. Uh, I will tell you, watching this game tonight
was so frustrating. I mean, Sunonny Gray’s fine, but to watch some of the feeble attempts
we’re getting at the plate. How this offense has completely gone in the tank, I I just cannot
figure it out. Player of the game, I’m going to give it to Nolan Gorman. He got the game-winning
hit. How do I not give it to him? Uh Sunny Gray was excellent, too. You could go there, but I’ll
give it to Nolan Gorman with the game-winning hit. He gets the apt player of the game. Now, you
go from St. Louis, you get a day off tomorrow. This is our Studio 41 look ahead brought to you by
Studio 41 home remodeling showroom. studio41.com. 13 locations. Guess where you go next? You go to
Toronto. That team won today. They brought in a rookie reliever making the league minimum with the
bases loaded in one out to face Otani and Betts. And he got them both. You’re going in there to
play in Toronto for three with this offense. Good freaking luck. I I I don’t get it. Six back now.
Brewers 5 nothing in the holiday. They find a way to win a baseball game. This offense is broken.
And the fact that nothing was done to try and fix it sucks. When Carson Kelly is your lead, your
uh cleanup hitter, you’re not serious. Take that.

The Chicago Cubs dropped another series, this time to the rival St. Louis Cardinals in a game they had several opportunities to win. Kap is furious at the front office for not addressing this team’s needs at the trade deadline. ‘When Carson Kelly is your clean-up hitter, you’re not serious.’ He says the offense is broken, which has been very clear of late. Shota Imanaga was fantastic, striking out 9 without a walk. The Cubs only 2 runs came off of the bat of Matt Shaw who hit his 9th homer. The Milwaukee Brewers won again and suddenly the Cubs are 6 back in the NL Central. Truly remarkable.

Take That!

  1. This team is a fukn embarrassment. They're done. They wont even make a wild card. Rickets is a cheap fuk and Hoyer is a fukn clown. He gave away Cam Smith for nothing.

  2. Im tired of hearing about the Brewers. They are the best team in the league. But they didn’t cause the Cubs to lose 2 of 3 to the Cardinals, Reds, Royals and barely win the series vs the White Sox and Twins.
The Cubs did that all on their own.
Plus somehow Jed got his extension.

  3. Pitching was the clear deadline need. I guess some wanted Suarez. Your best hitter has been the guy he would replace. Need Amaya back. Need the 3 OF's to figure it out.

  4. PCA is an absolute disaster. His early season success will be the reason he falters . Terrible base running, swings at everything, takes terrible angles in the outfield, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets hurt.

  5. I’m sick and tired of every year horshit Cubs baseball. This team is F’ing Pathetic and a complete POS. I’m so pissed with them. Shota pitched a wonderful game and it’s all for nothing. From here on out, bring up the prospects, bench these a-hole starters that don’t give a crap and let them sit while the guys fighting for jobs play. The season is over, so let’s see what the prospects can do. Why should we care anymore as diehard fans when it’s evident Carter Hawkins, Jed Hoyer and Tom Ricketts don’t give a damm as they know they can count on stupid ass fans and corporate sponsorships to continue and they make millions.

  6. PCA is really slumping. When you don't get deadline help or you shop at the bargain rack there is no margin for error. Shaw is playing well, but they needed a boost from someone like Suarez, who they could have easily gotten, based on what Seattle gave up for him.

  7. Cubs are 28-27 last 55 games. They are just an average 500 team right now. When your big 4 hitters can't hit homers or get big hits you are not gonna win most games. Craig Counsell is nothing special. He will never take this team anywhere.

  8. I call PCA Pete Choke Armstrong. This guy is a loser. Kyle Tucker can kick rocks too, we dont need him. He's not worth alot. This team is a joke since Jed Hoyer signed his extension and Tom Ricketts doesn't care. He's cheap now.

  9. I think we need to realize this is NOT a World Series contender…
The Cubs are a pretty decent team out with standing the current slide. This team has some good young talent ie PCA, Shaw, Horton, and Amaya but we are still too young to be a WS threat. These guys need to grow before they become
serious World Series contenders. This team vastly reminds me of the 1984 Bears and 2015 Cubs..
Good team, on the cusp, but NOT quite championship material yet.

Not throwing in the towel 100% for 2025 but let’s face it, this team is playing for a Wild Card slot now, you can pretty much forget the division now.

NEXT year we can be pretty damn good with a potential starting rotation that looks like this in no particular order..

Steele, Imanaga, Boyd, Horton, and Wiggins.

Taillon and Rea can go to the bullpen or trade them…

  10. Seems like the fame and pressure has been getting to PCA recently. He should bounce back and adjust at some point though. But Berti was clearly out his hand/mitt came off the base. Good game nonetheless #TakeThat

  11. This is still brutal to watch. One stolen base in two attempts and a pick off. Seventh and eighth innings ended with a batter swinging at an off-speed pitch, down and away, with two strikes. Swanson got lucky with the changeup down and away, but Shaw did the same thing to end it. The Cards pulled an us on us in the seventh with a two out rally. We had traffic. Just absolutely brutal to watch.

  12. All this angst. The first couple of months inflated expectations. Actually, since June the Cubs look like they have looked since 2023. A decent team. That fast start will get them in the playoffs. Could win a WC series. No further. Reset your expectations and enjoy. Seriously. Life is too short.

  13. And as long as 30-40K continue to show up at Wrigley,
Jed & Tommy will continue to do as little as possible to
improve the team. Ownership hasn't been concerned about
    winning since 2016.

  14. I REALLY wish these players of today wouldn’t wear these STUPID fucking oven mitts on the bases.

I have NO clue why they wear them, it’s got to be so easy for them to slide off the bag like Berti’s did tonight. Just wear batting gloves on the bases so you can grab the bag with your fingers !!!!!

Pete Rose NEVER would have worn fucking oven mitts on the bases …..

  15. Cubs are very arrogant and stubborn. They may statistically be a good offense but they are extremely inconsistent for 2 months now. Pendulum swings one way and they score 8 or 9 runs, next game they're lucky if they can score a run. Then they become over aggressive to over compensate for lack of runs and results like tonight occur. Cubs are 6 games behind Brewers; Reds are 6 games behind Cubs. Once again like the past 3 or 4 years, offense is broken. Maybe make some adjustments; isn't thst what baseball is?!? A game of adjustments?!?

Kyle Tucker — how about you take more BP!!!!
