John Harbaugh, Players Media Availability | Baltimore Ravens
We appreciate everybody being here. Good practice, hot. Uh I thought the guys did a really good job of uh of uh pushing through in terms of uh execution, focus, trying to take care of the details. Uh that’s really what we were trying to do. It’s some fast mental practice and we did a good job with that. So, uh, we’ll have a different practice tomorrow, more of a mental practice and then we’ll be pointing toward the Dallas game on Saturday. What questions you have? So, how would you grade uh Tyler Linderbomb the the holder? Oh, well, he’s snapping there, too. Yeah, we’ve got you just got to work on the contingencies. How would I rate him? Uh, hopefully uh you know, we had we’ve had that in the past like way back we had uh we’ve had linebackers kick field goals. We we practice and got talking about games like in Philly, you go all the way back. So, we’ve had we’ve had long snappers hold. There’s a lot of different things that can happen. So, you want to be prepared for every every possibility. John, one of the kind of the overarching games I thought of the Thursday game was how well the defensive backups play, the guys at nose tackle, the guys at inside linebacker, and of course the outside linebackers. How much does that complicate some of the things? You talked about it by keeping six guys. Sure. Yeah, absolutely. Uh it’s I guess you’d say it’s a good problem to have. Uh it’s uh it does complicate it because there’s more than more than the allotted number probably that are playing well enough to make the team. You know, I thought our D line, like you said, uh both inside, outside, and the inside backers all played really well. I thought our secondary played well, too, on defense. Those those guys did well. So, they get another chance again here on Saturday. See how they do, but they’ve done well in practice. So, some of those guys are really coming along. They’re really improving. some young player, developmental guys that have been uh worked with with our coaches, Dennis Johnson and Matt Robinson and Chuck Smith and Tyler Sanuchi. I think those coaches have done a great job and and we’ll see what they do on Saturday, John. Along those lines, uh I know Aoy as a developmental guy, but do you see him as somebody who could sort of play anywhere along the defensive line conceivably or where do you see his Well, more of a nose guard probably. You know, I think he could play three technique a little bit or play, you know, he can play over the guard. You know, you can talk about, you know, a head up two technique or but really more of a A gap player probably. I’d probably, you know, he’s 370 plus pounds, but he’s really learning. I mean, he’s really learned how to come out of his hips and strike and shed, stay square in there, play the run. He gets got some pushing pass rush. He’s going to be a pocket pusher. Uh take, you know, making good use of all that size he has. Uh he’s he’s come light years. John with um we’ve talked a lot we’ve talked in the past about David Ajavo and obviously the injuries been part of that story unfortunately. What do you kind of view is is his what you’d like to see in his next step in the progression as David well you know I tell you I mean I saw a lot of it in the game. I think he’s playing he’s playing in very direct way. You know thing about David Aabo it’s important to remember is he’s not a guy that played a lot of football. You know he was late late to football in high school. might have played one year of high school football. Really only played one year of college football really is what he ended up playing as far as a full season and then he got hurt, you know, coming out. So, uh, football’s kind of one of these games where the more you play it, the better feel you have for it. You know, it’s like any sport probably, but I think his I think his upside is really there and believe that we’ll see it. I think we’ve seen it already in camp. I’m looking forward to the game so everybody can see it really, but um, yeah, that’s uh, he’s an upside guy. Malachi with the back of the end zone interception obviously some of his ball skills we saw on tape at Georgia. Um you know what value do you think he could bring to the secondary as they kind of try to get more turnovers and interceptions this year? Absolutely. Probably you know if you were going to sit there and say what was the re one of the biggest reasons we drafted him is is because of that very reason right there. And and I think Zach has just made so many he’s made the point every day, multiple times in meetings and practice field and everything else about about getting the ball, about taking the ball away, about assaulting the football, about catching the ball when they throw it to you, about catching tips and overthrows, all these different things that he’s been emphasizing and working on. I think that guys are buying into it in practice and they’re making the ball u they’re making a lot of plays on the ball. So again, let’s take it to the games. Malachi is a great example of it. He he just has great ball skills. is great. We’re great range, you know. Um, all those guys back there, you saw one today with DeAndre made a great play. So happy with those guys. Adisa Isaac had a strong game like when you guys had your first preing game, but what did you see throughout camp that indicated that he might show up? Who’s that? Adisa Isaac. What have you seen like maybe the little things from him that we don’t know? Yeah, great great question in the sense that he is really starting to play with physicality. I would say that’s probably the biggest thing for me is he looks really strong coming off the edge. He’s knocking back tight ends. He’s uh he’s stalemating tackles and he’s really hitting all those pull kick out schemes really well. So, and pass rush has been more physical too. So, the physicality probably would be the thing that went out there with the patelling um that just a uh you know that’s a longterm difficulty. Yeah. Well, he’s going to get surgery. I can tell you that. Um, as far as being a torn patellar tendon, you know, define that. You know, that’s that’s a little bit vague. So, he’s doesn’t, you know, I I can’t really say what he has, but it’s it’s, you know, am I allowed to say what it is? Hip allow me to tell you what it is. I can’t. He says no. But, uh, it’s it’s something that was deemed that uh that surgery was the best move for him, you know, and that’s good. That’s a decision that every player and has a right to make and we support it, you know, so that’s what he’s going to do. I love him. The way he was playing, he was playing really well and um you it’s a little bit of a setback for sure because, you know, he’s kind of starting to count on him and count on BK, too. I mean, those two guys are really looking like they could help us this year, but they’re not going to be there, you know. So, um we’ll get them in rehab and and they’ll be back next year. All right. Okay. Thanks a lot. Thank you guys. Matt, y maybe give us a little bit of an overview. Compare and contrast the styles between David Ajabo and Adisa Isaac in terms of how they beat opponents and how they differ as pass. Um, actually they’re they’re a lot alike in in a lot of ways. They they’re both contact players. Uh they’re they’re long, they’re strong, uh they’re physical at the point of attack. Uh they they have really good power at the top of their rush. And you know, I I think in a lot of ways they’re alike. It’s um it’s fun watching them go go out there and compete. Now, when you think about uh where a lot of the pass rushing guys at the start of camp, who’s been the biggest surprise the last couple weeks? Biggest surprise, um I would say just the the fact that, you know, Mike Green, you know, really pops out on tape. Um he plays with kind of a relentless uh mindset. He’s, you know, tenacious at the point of attack. Um I think you guys have seen it in the games. Uh you know, his ability to kind of affect the affect the play on pretty much every time he’s in there. You know, he’s he’s going to set a violent edge. Um get pressure on the quarterback. And I really like I like really like where he’s at right now. Um, you know, Matt, uh, John brought up physicality when talking about Adisa and you just said contact player for both him and David Javo. He also both have some some difficult injuries in the last few years. Is it tough to kind of mentally get those guys back from injuries and and being the physical players they can be? Is it sort of are they sort of reaching a point where they’re maybe over the hump of of kind of getting their confidence back from injury? Definitely. I think they they came in ready to play. Uh their lower their lower half is starting to come back and that allows them to play really strong at the point of attack and I’m I’m excited for how that’s kind of developing right now. We saw it in the first game. We’ve been seeing it on the practice field and I I I just can’t wait to build off of in Dallas. Now we’re talking to Tavius after you. Um have you seen him add some sophistication to kind of his pass rush arsenal this year? Yeah, he has, you know, he has a little bit he’s more of a a physical presence. You know, he’s a dominant edge setter for us and then he’s he’s been more of a power rusher as of, you know, in his first couple years, but I think right now he’s definitely working on some finesse moves on the edge that that that he can work in some of his transition rushes and I think that’ll be a nice piece, you know, to his game. It’s not our first time talking to you. I know you’ve been here for for 5 years, but how did you kind of get um involved as a as a coaching fellow and were you always kind of on that trajectory or was it surprised you kind of latch on with the Ravens and the ways that you did? Yeah, I started coaching after I uh I got done playing. And I started coaching at a high school here at Spalding and then uh moved on to Yukon with Zel who was my coach and then transitioned to Maryland and then I got uh my act my wife actually was uh I’m really close friends with um Drew Wilkins wife because they were both cheerleaders at Maryland and that’s kind of how I got connected here and kind of I was really trying to you know while I was at Maryland I was really trying to get a job here. I was trying to contact anybody that would kind of kind of listen and uh you know just give me an opportunity to come in and put my head down and work. What’s it been like to that point? What’s it been like working with Chuck Smith? How has he kind of helped you along these last couple years? Yeah, Chuck has a a great deal of knowledge, especially uh in the pass rush and and just the the tools that he’s been able to to teach me and uh the the arsenal that he he he equips our guys with. Um it’s it’s fun to fun to learn with him and he has a you know, he played uh eight nine years in the league and it’s it’s great to hear those stories and um yeah, it’s it’s really nice working with Chuck. We see Chuck has a little bit of intensity sometimes when he when he talks to us in the media and obviously out in the field too. Does he keep you on your toes a little bit with with his passion, competitiveness? Yeah. No, we and we go at it a little bit. You know, it’s all it’s all fun. Um but, you know, he’s a competitive guy and he just wants to bring the best out of our players and I think we all we all want that. So, uh it’s it’s great. Matt, um, similar to the earlier question, what have you, seen so far David in terms of those next steps that he needs to take? Yeah, really just in the game uh really want him to affect the game in kind of uh different ways, whether it’s, you know, setting a dominant edge, being a physical player, getting pocket push, and then getting his body on the quarterback. And I think we saw him take steps in uh steps towards that in the game. and uh he has a couple more opportunities to kind of prove that going forward. And you know, watching Tavius, I think one not oneonone, but take on Charlie Kohler when he’s kind of line spot. What is it like? What would you kind of say Tavius brings to that position in terms of when he sees it’s a run, he knows it’s coming his way. Like how hard is it for opposing tight ends to to match up with their physical race? You know, I it’s it’s it’s awesome to watch because I usually know what the results going to be. You know, I think he’s going to, you know, really really put his hands on people, get knocked back, change the line of scrimmage, uh force ball carriers to bounce or he’s going to end up making a play. I I know the inside linebackers like playing behind him because he’s going to change the line of scrimmage in front of them and usually it turns out good for the Ravens. You’ve seen a lot of battles between him and Charlie Puller. I guess how have you seen the two of them kind of push each other through the past few years? That’s been that’s been great to watch because Charlie’s gotten a hell of a lot better just over the course of these years and as an inline blocker and I think going against our guys, it continues, you know, iron sharpens iron. So the, you know, competitive drills that we do at practice, I I think lead to, you know, great results in the game because we have a tremendous amount of talent on both sides of the ball. So watching them go those guys compete, it’s it’s awesome to see. Matt, you’ve been around OA for years now. I mean, obviously much was made when we first saw him come out for the summer about the bulk that he added. He’s talked to us about it. Do you think we’re going to see a different element to his game this year? You think we’ll see a more forceful kind of version of him or what’s your sense of of that? Yeah, absolutely. the fact that he’s changed his body, I think he he’s out to the sky’s is the limit for him and I think he’s out to prove that he’s, you know, a top, you know, five, top 10 edge guy in the league and, you know, putting on that extra mass is going to allow him, I think, to take on the wear and tear as the season goes on. Um, you know, withstand kind of that and still be a dominant player down the stretch. And, you know, I’m excited for, uh, I’m excited for him and, you know, I’m looking forward to kind of, you know, how he comes out. Um, Odaf and Ada are friends at Penn State. Everyone has talked about, I guess, how have you seen that relationship play out here? Has Adisa picked up things from Odap? Um, what are they like together in the room? You know, they’re always, you know, they’re always joking and they’re always uh I think D is always trying to be in his hit pocket a little bit. Um, you know, pick up what he can and they’re little bit of different players at at the point of attack um at at times, but I I really like uh their relationship is cool to see. And you know, the fact that the same thing with uh J and and Doc, it’s cool to have guys who who grew up playing with each other. I think that relationship, you know, helps them when they’re out there. They can trust each other and it’s cool to watch. Thank you, Matt. Cool. So, if you had to compare yourself now to you a year ago or two years ago, you know, what what are the strides? Yeah, just big strides. Um, I think, you know, going back from year one and like looking at that film in year two, it was like I’m like, “Wow, like this isn’t good.” You know what I mean? And then and then and then year two you go looking back and it’s just like every year you’re trying to get better and looking back on old film it’s like wow I’m such a better player now. So um yeah I think I’m just continuing to take strides and continue to grow. So was it a point of pride for you that you could even not bother with getting suited up to a preseason game? Mhm. It definitely uh you know meant a lot that you know coaches trusted me, believed me and uh yeah it was different though. It was weird not suiting up and going out there. So but yeah for sure. We’ve seen you battle with Colar a lot. Mhm. I saw you yesterday battle Ricard on a really good rep. That physicality, has that been an emphasis for you? And are you stronger, bigger? Are you heavier than you were last year? Uh, 100%. Physicality is always like that’s that’s the the number one part of my game 100%. And uh, yeah, I’m definitely stronger. You know, it’s been a a great offseason here in the weight room. Um, but yeah, you know, not only is it my game, but it’s it’s the Ravens game. So, it’s important to bring that every day. Where’ you make the biggest strides, do you think, when you look at that team? Yeah. Uh even yeah, looking at from tape year one to year two, it’s just like seeing offensive formations better and being able to play faster, play looser, and just make plays off of that. So, I think, you know, taking another step this year and just continuing to grow uh will definitely be great. I’m curious, have you gone back ever and watched Jared Johnson take, you know, kind of legend there being very physical, setting a hard edge? Yeah. Is he anybody that you talked about with anything like that? I’ve watched not only that, but we wear the same numbers. So, I’ve watched I’ve watched as many podcasts, as many like everything that he’s been on. Just trying to like tap into his mental a little bit and and you know, his highlights as well because, you know, he was a guy that, you know, maybe didn’t get all the the credit and stuff that he deserved, you know, sackwise and pass rush wise, but he was a dominant run defender, dominant, physical, gritty player. So, yeah, I uh I’ve been I’ve done a couple deep dives on him and and kind of gone through his his career here and uh yeah, he’s a legend for sure. So, it’s a blessing to wear his number. You see a guy that you kind of emulate, would you say? Is that fair to say? 100%. Yeah. The way he played, the the physicality, the effort that he played with. 100%. Yeah. Just to follow up on that just a little bit. Obviously, there’s a number of guys who really pride themselves as pass rushers. Probably first and Orio. Um do you look at your role in this team as being an early down? Are you happy with that? Say, “Boy, I would love to kick his side on third down or I’d love to be out there.” Yeah, I think that’s something I’m always trying to improve on, you know, but at the end of the day, uh, you know, it’s a team sport and and so if my role is first and second down, you know, I’m going to do that to the best of my ability and keep working to get, you know, reps on third down. But, um, the most important thing to me is winning and, uh, whatever my role is, I have to do that to the best of my ability. So, what do your what do your Canadian friends say about your career path? Yeah, a lot. It’s um, you know, they’re all really proud of me. Um, and I think you know Canada as a whole like more and more year guys are getting drafted every year. So, uh, it’s been great. You know, there was guys that I look up to and now for me it’s just important to, you know, show the youth that is possible there and just continue to grow that number every year. One of those guys. Sorry, Brent. He was Yeah, he was one of those guys. Uh, T, beginning of training camp, Mike Green had said that in that room of pass rushers that you’re the guy he looks up to. You’re the guy he wants to emulate. You’re the guy he’s learning from. What’s that dynamic been like? and and how have you kind of been a mentor to him? Yeah, I’ll tell you he’s been a guy who who has come in and just really like taken the details from day one and I love that. You know, he’s on his playbook. He’s he’s taken great notes every day. We sit beside each other. So, um yeah, really proud of him and the strides he’s taken from OTAAS to now and I think he’s going to be he has that dog mentality. He’s going to be a dog for sure. Go back to the Canada thing one more time. Um, I know that Brent said that he really praised his father for getting involved in American camps because that was his chance of getting into college football. Yeah. What was your path like when you had a little recruiting to play in that? Mhm. Uh, for my path was kind of uh I played uh university in Canada first. So, uh, didn’t really get any looks out of high school, but um, yeah, after my two years in Canada, co kind of led me to Old Miss and then uh, from there, you know, it was a blessing that co happened because without that, I wouldn’t have went to Old Miss and then it’s just a a trickle effect. So, yeah. Davis, we’ve talked to Chuck Smith a bunch and and sort of have a good sense of the energy that you bring because we just talked to Matt Robinson. What’s he like in that room? Yeah, Chuck uh brings the energy every day. You know, he’s uh always us getting us better, getting us hyped up before practices. And same with Matt. You know, both of them bring energy every day. So, it’s a blessing to have both of them in the room. And uh yeah, Matt is just one of the smartest coaches I’ve been around. Like the way he knows X’s and O’s and he puts us in good positions to to make plays on game day. So, give an example of that. Yeah, I have lots of examples. I can’t really say certain plays and stuff, but there’s a lot of big plays that I made last year from situations that we worked through in practice, we talked about in the meeting room, and then, you know, seeing that exact thing in a game and going here and making that play. So, lots of lots of situations like that. Yeah. Davius, if you if you end up having that kind of Jared Johnson type career where, you know, multiple contracts, you know, you’re sort of known for doing the dirty work, maybe people in the building appreciate you a little more than people outside, are you are you cool with that? like is that that be an image you’re happy with or like Yeah, I think for me, you know, I’m always going to be working on expanding my role. That’s that’s important. But at the end of the day, it’s it’s so important me to do what my role is to the best of my ability. So, yeah, I would I would be happy with that for sure. I mean, he had a great career and he he’s a legend in this building. He’s he’s on our our defensive meeting uh like slideshow every day. He’s he’s one of the guys up there. So, yeah, just playing my role to the best of my ability. I know you’re still obviously working to improve, but what has it been like just coming in with a pretty defined role. You’re not one of the young guys there maybe on the double at this point. Yeah, I think um it’s been it’s been um just just continuing to get better every day. Like that’s that’s been my focus always, you know, whether I was in year 1, year two, or year three, I just had the same mindset of I have to get better every day because, you know, you’re either getting better or you’re getting worse. So every day I come out here, I try to put my best foot forward and just grow. Yeah. Is it weird that you’re one of like the established or not quite older but like established guys? It is a little weird. Yeah, it feels like I was just, you know, playing 60 70 snaps in the preseason game and now all of a sudden here we are. So, it’s uh it’s crazy how how fast the time has gone for sure. Thank you, David. Appreciate you. All right. So it’s like Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. God bless. Can you talk about your hit on Richardson? I just got to hear it from your your Great call by Co Zio. Uh, you know, they didn’t pick up the blitz. you know, I saw daylight and I didn’t break stride and uh I got a good legal hit and you know, celebrated with the crowd, my teammates, and it was a good feeling. Was just saying that you and Adisa have some similarities as a player? I guess what is that like working with him? Does it make it easier for you guys to kind of play off each other, especially given how last year with injuries and everything went with him? Guess what is your relationship like? Yeah, De man. Good guy. uh you know we we bond off the field you know as well as like you said you know have similarities so you know we just feeding off each other both getting better every day both having fun with it and uh like I said man great guy my guy yeah are you having the camp that you wanted to have so far or do you feel like you’re showing what you wanted to show most definitely man uh it’s my first true off season healthy you know feel like myself feel confident you know just kind of letting it rip, man. Not thinking about, you know, rehabbing, man. I’m just thinking about football, man. So, fact, I’m doing good. Uh, you know, just keep getting better day by day. To that point, Harp said he views you as an upside big upside guy and, you know, he’s like the way he played in camp and game. What’s it What’s that been like for you to your point, you have not been help, you’ve been dealing with a lot of this since you’ve been here. Um, is it is it a boost? Is it is it feel do you feel like yourself again? What what is it? Yeah, man. It’s God’s blessing, honestly. Uh you know, you can’t predict what happens on the field. Every snap could be a last. So, you know, every time you’re out there, man, you just got to smile. You know, control what you can control, which is your effort. You know, go out there, leave it out on the field, and uh ultimately have fun with it, man. It’s a kids game, and that’s what we’re all doing. And the team is getting better. What are some of the biggest strides you feel like you made now that you’re able to just focus on playing? Uh just being free, you know, being being out there and and going hard and uh you know, getting the call and just going 100%. You know, that that’s what what it what’s like at the pro level. You know, everybody’s good. So, you know, if you’re hesitating, if you’re thinking about anything other than like your true assignment, you know, you’ll fold. So, yeah, man. Just being free, man. Playing playing free and like having fun. We heard Tavia say that Matt Robinson is one of the smartest coaches he’s worked with. Just what’s been your impression working with Matt. What’s he like in that room? Man, he’s a he’s a cool guy, man. You know, on the field, off the field, and uh yeah, he do he got the mentals, man. He He’s the X and O’s guy, you know, very detailed, too. So, you know, that combination of having Coach DJ, which is, you know, Coach Dennis, you know, he’s good with like the run stuff, brings energy. Coach Chuck, man, he he’s a guru, you know, he he he he knows how to pass rush. He knows how to teach it. Then coach Matt, man, Matt Robinson, he just like kind of finalizes everything. And you know, our drops, you know, just X and O’s, man. Just that that trio right there. And also, shout out Mega, man. You know, she she does a lot of work uh in the background, you know, with the stances and, you know, just that whole group, man. They they’re doing our thing, their thing, you know, to help us just get better. Um, lots been made this all season of the outside linebacker position and how many the team can take and you bring back basically everybody and then you add, you know, Mike Green to it. How much have you had to sort of block that out and not kind of play the numbers game in your head and not kind of overreact every practice like you need to, you know, like, you know, you need to press on every play. I haven’t heard nothing about that, honestly. I’m I’m out here just get the call, play fast, have fun. and uh you know control what I can control, you know, which is my effort, you know, and my attitude. What have you thought of Mike Green so far? Yeah, he’s he’s talented. Yeah, real talented. Also off the field, he’s a he’s a very personable guy. Somebody you can have fun with, you know, always crack a joke or two. Uh really good guy, man. I’m happy we have him. Do anything in the offseason in terms of prepping for this season that was different than they did in the past? I know you had injuries you had to Is there any different approach to anything? Uh, you know, nah, I just work on my flexibility, you know, you know, strength, and then of course, you know, I got in Matt Robinson’s corner, man, with the X’s and O’s of the game cuz all of us are good, all of us are smart, you know, all of us are physically gifted, but, you know, just to get that little edge, you know, with formations and stuff like that, you know, take my game to the next level. So yeah, just more more IQ prep. I’m curious how much you root for CJ, another Nigerian guy, you know, played well. How much you root for a guy like that, man? Big CJ, man. That that’s my brother, man. He He’s come a long way. You know, all the odds are stacked against him. He’s new to the sport kind of like how I was, but he just keeps grinding, man. So, you know, all it is for him is confidence and knowledge cuz he he he got a god body for for football. You know, he was built to play football. So, soon as he gets that confidence up and knowing to call, knowing know what to do and just knowledge of the sport, man, the sky’s is the limit honestly. You mentioned next level. What does that look like in your mind for you? my game, man. Everything, you know, from, you know, run run dominance to, you know, pass dominance to even dropping, you know, our position, we drop, too. So, you know, just just being versatile, man. Just being able to be a a four down player, not just, you know, first, second, you know, or third, you know, just be on the field, do my drive, be productive, come off, and then, you know, next next for David. David, you joined Dambi and Adante in the off season to go back to Nigeria. How many meaningful was it for you to go back and give back home to the kids at home? Man, it meant everything. You know the that whole trip gave me perspective uh just how blessed we are man you know our complaints are their blessings you know what I’m saying like you know for I had a fun day myself and you know I gave just t-shirts you know bottles of water and I had kids crying just saying like this is the shirt they’re going to wear for the rest of the year you know what I’m saying so it gives perspective like look at us man we at the castle and we got thousand cameras is like, you know, your phone. They wish they could have a phone like that. You know, just little stuff like that. It gives perspective on life. Like, we have no complaints in reality. Yeah. We’re too blessed. Where are those slots? I don’t know. My personal shopper got for me, man. She pretty sick. Shout out Jazzy. Yeah. Custom uh clothing brand for the gear or is that just Honestly, this is for on Pikesville. This one beauty supply store. Yeah, it got a little, you know, it’s like $3, man. Thank you. Yeah. Thank God bless, man. Appreciate you guys.
