Ravens Have Introduced a New Grading System | Baltimore Ravens Final Drive
The Baltimore Ravens have long preached the importance of fundamentals, the dirty work plays that often decide games. Well, this year, John Harbaugh has taken that philosophy to another level, introducing a transparent position by position grading system with leaderboards in each meeting room. We’ve always been very intentional about all those types of things that are important. and you grade a lot of different areas. I mean, you grade everything to some degree, you certainly evaluate everything, but we just thought if if if we always kind of believe that if it’s uh if it’s important and it matters and especially if it’s a type of thing that’s kind of the the dirty work, sort of the bluecollar work that takes kind of an everyday uh intentionality, then you know, you should not just talk about it, but you should reward it, you know, and and emphasize it and grade it and evaluate it and all those kind of things so guys are thinking about it. And uh that’s really what we tried to do. The new system grades players on specific criteria for their position group. Offensively, that might mean ball security, blocking technique, or route running. Defensively, it could be tackling form, running to the ball, or executing an assignment cleanly. Each day, position coaches evaluate and grade, and then those results are posted on TV screens in the meeting rooms and ranked by position. And so far, players like how the system reinforces daily habits and adds a healthy level of accountability. I think it’s cool. I think it’s cool to kind of keep yourself accountable, kind of have a grading. Everyone can see it. You can kind of just gauge on if you’re doing the right things that wins football games. So, I think it’s cool. I think it’s a good job for our coaches to do that. We got to be diligent about doing the the little things right and um you know, and carrying those over to u make them second nature. So, I think, you know, to the point of, you know, having those grading scales of the different things that the coaches are doing, um, just puts an emphasis on, um, you know, throughout practice or games to make it habit. And, uh, that’s an awesome thing. Veteran outside linebacker Kyle Vanoi, who has played in and won multiple Super Bowls, understands better than most why these details are being drilled home now. It matters a lot, especially when you get later into the season. uh when you get into the playoffs, those little details need to be executed at a high level. Um you can’t just talk about it. You got to be about it every single day. I think we’re doing that. I think we’ve been doing that. I think we’ve just had a couple lacked situations would have um ultimately have bit us in the butt and we just got to knock it out. Like I knock it off. It’s easy to say, but at the same time, it it’s it’s hard to do, right? It’s hard to continue to get back back to where we were. It’s it’s all it’s all hard. We just got to continue to like you said, figure out those details, iron those out, and then when the lights are the brightest, perform. For the Ravens, this new grading system isn’t about flashy stats or highlight plays. It’s about building the kind of habits that hold up under the postseason’s brightest lights. The leaderboard may have started in July, but its real purpose is to pay off in January and hopefully February. That’s it for me today. We’ll see you back here tomorrow. [Music] [Music]
