🔴LIVE 🔴San Diego Padres VS San Francisco Giants / August 11/ Envivo TV/MLB THE SHOW 25
Towing the slab in this one, Justin Verlander. And as usual with him singing, I think we can expect plenty of strikeouts. Yeah, Boog. He’s racked up over 3,000 strikeouts in his career. So, expect to see more of the same in this one. Okay, all set to go. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. And that one is downstairs. And we are underway. [Music] And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball two. Just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. And that one lifted in the air center field. Makes the grab. One away. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. All right, Singy. How about all the talent in this lineup? They’re deep first and foremost, but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else, it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team. And I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams, especially in a big game, big series. Luis Arise in the box now. No balls in a strike. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. One down, base is empty. [Music] Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today. Edge of the zone for a strike and the count one and two that one way inside. One out. Base is empty. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Wow. That’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to, at least for now, allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can. Here’s Manny Machado now. Swang and a miss. And Manny gets a piece. 0 and two now. And that’s downstairs and outside. Two out. Base is empty. fouled off and they’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Chapman over to first in time. That ends the frame. Three up, three down for San Diego. Now it’s the Giants turn. No score. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and our starting pitcher here today, Dylan Cease. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Out of the ground to third. Fair ball. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Man aboard. And here is De’s [Applause] late swing. Fouled to the left. Ramos gets his lead at first. Nobody out. [Music] Next pitch misses. Now one and two. Oh, he never moved because he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Foul ball still a one and two count. [Music] Way inside. Rudder at first with no outs here in the dirt. Goes down swinging for the strikeout. Blew the express right by his bat for strike three. Great location with that two strike fast ball. I tell you what, as a hitter, you’re looking to protect the outside part of the plate, stay back on something off speed. So many times that location with two strikes, you just can’t get around on it. And that’s a tough one to compete with. Willie Adam stands in. First pitch swinging. That’s in there. And that is strike two. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Oh, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the lead off single. Back-to-back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. And now it’s Wilmer Flores. Let’s go. Come on. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Music] And another ball [Applause] in the air on the infield. Machado. He’s got it. And that is that one left for San Francisco. Scoreless after one. Top of the second and here’s the first baseman, Ryan O’Harn. Ryan O’Harn Verlander goes 6’5 in over 200 career wins. He joined the team as a free agent. Just missed. Carl Dixon doing the umpiring behind the plate. And Boo, I’m not sure if it’s because he sort of sets up higher than most, but one thing to be aware of with Dixon is the high strike. Not usually a big deal because most players are swinging at pitches up there, but we may see some surprise looks from hitters from time to time because that’s just so unusual. [Applause] That misses. Two balls, two strikes. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in club. Oh, that ball drilled back up the box and nailed the pitcher. Gets it there in time, though. And they get it out on the play. And now they’ll hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. And here is Xander Bogarts. Fast in for a strike. Going one. Second inning here. No score. Swang and a miss and a count is 0 and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two away. And now the center fielder Jackson Merrill a bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. You’ll [Applause] hit in the air left field. Ramos on his way over and makes the grab and that’ll do it. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Bottom of the second. Matt Chapman up to the plate now. Matt Chapman. Cease back to work. Chapman gets a piece there. [Music] that misses the zone and now it’s even one and one. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. swings through that and it’s a strikeout. That K is his third of the game. Got him swinging on that pitch away to finish him off, but everything early in the at bat was in tight. Really challenged him in there with some competitive pitches, not letting him get his hands extended, but of course that eventually opens up the outside part of the plate and he just wasn’t able to adjust. Casey Schmidt, the next Giant to hit. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. His second home run of the series. It’s one- nothing. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. [Applause] They thought he could blow a high fast ball by him, but he was ready for it. Look at how quickly he jumped on that pitch. Base is empty, one away. Jung Hulie digs in now. right through there for a strike. Always fun to watch Lee go to work at the dish boo. He’s just a pure hitter and a good athlete. Someone referred to him as a slow drip guy because the more you watch him, the more you like him. This one in the air. Machado under it. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Batting eight, catcher Patrick. Two down, base is empty. Now it’s the Giants catcher Patrick Bailey. That’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across. Bottom half of inning number two. Way high with that one. And it’s one and one. Fast ball is outside. This one in the air. Firm mean brings it in. And that is that. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now one- nothing. Back after this on the show. And we’re back onto the third inning. Lauraniano comes up to hit. Here’s a swing and a drive left field. And he knew it. [Music] That’s his 99th career homer. And this game is tied. It’s 1-1. With a low 90s fast ball, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. patient, waited for it. It was like BP all over again. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Slap the other way. Foul. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Now one fast ball for a strike at 95. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. very top of the strike zone. Middle away. The wind to the pitch. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Pulls it in on the run. One away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Freddy Ferbine batting with one down. Takes a strike. One out. Base is empty and a run in. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. battling here as he fouls it away. That’s foul off to the right side. keeps the AB going and the O2 one ball two. Got him swinging. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball. And I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. very hitable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. flyed to right his first time. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. And a swing and a miss there. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing anding miss and get through this at bat. Whips it to first. And they take care of Tatis for the out. Third out. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer. All even now at 1-1. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Oracle Park, here’s the rookie right fielder, Drew Gilbert, trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues. First pitch. Not close. Let’s go, Drew. Check. Swing. Called. Strike. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. [Music] Got him swinging. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. But when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. Here’s Elliot Ramos. And that misses and it’s one and0. Let’s go San Francisco. That one ripped but fouled. Tied up here in the early going. Swings and misses. And it’s one and two. One ball, two straight. That’s to third ball. That’s backto-back singles for him. Just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tea where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. Now it’s Devers at the plate. Struck out swinging his first time. There’s the strike. [Applause] This one in the dirt He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. works the walk. Almost a coin flip for the umpire in that call. But most umpires just don’t want to give pitchers a break up in the zone like that. So up next, Willie Adamus 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Swing and he popped it up. Tatis sizing this one up. He’s got it. There’s two away. Wilmer Flores, the next Giant to hit. He popped out his first time. Flores. That one not close. Ball one. Right through there for a strike. Ramos over at second. Des at first. Two out of the inning. That crosses the plate. And now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. Giants leave a couple. Score remains deadlocked at one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Luis Arise stands in. swing and a miss. Strike one. You know, these Padres’s doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. And that one is lifted in the air. Lee sizes this one up. Makes the catch for the out. One up, one down. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Now, Machado up here. First time up, he grounded to third. First pitch misses. [Music] in the air out towards right center. Gilbert carous it. Two down. Now batting Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit. 0 for one so far. first pitch and he just misses. And another ball called strike right there. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Popped up. Adamus under it. And that’ll do it. Nothing doing here this half. And midway in the fourth. All tied 1-1. Back here in San Francisco, John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Matt Chapman. Let’s go Giants. [Applause] Started to go after it. Now a look down to first. No swing. Eric Summerskill with the call in there at the knees and it’s one and one. line drive, base hit right field, and that’s going to get into the corner. So, a man on base to start the inning. That play looks routine defensively, but with all of the little nooks, it can get real tricky down in the corner. Kept it to a long single. Nice defensive play. Casey Schmidt, the next to hit. He’s already homerred here in this one. [Applause] He was late there. Strike one. And one. Next offering in there for a strike. No balls, two strikes. fights it off. He’ll see another and he chases that one now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. Well, clearly just anxious right there and understandably so. In an 02 count, you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your swing. Lee stands in now and watches strike one. Went with the sweeper for the strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. And that one upstairs, Chapman at first, one gone. Hit in the air out to center field. Merryill snags it for the second out. Now batting catcher Patrick Bailey. And now the switch in catcher Patrick Bailey. First time up was a pop out. That one at 95 missed up top and that’s ball one. Giants. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that’s way high now. Three and one. Drew Gilbert in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Fouls one away and now three and two. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. So now three and two. swing and a miss and that is that. So the Giants leave one still tied 1-1. And we’re back all set for the start of the inning. Now here is Xander Bogarts. Burlander back to work. Rolled softly but that goes foul. Bogart’s 32 years old and he was born in Aruba. The O2 lifted in the air out to left. Ramos puts it away for the out. Now batting the centerielder. Next for the Padres’s Jackson Merrill fly to left his first time. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. All tied up and we’re in the top of the fifth. swings and misses and it’s 0 and two. The guy’s going this good. He’s retired seven in a row. You got to step out of the box. Fake butt. Do something to break it up. And there’s a ball. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Fights that one away. Still one and two. up the middle lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw and they can’t get the out. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. You can’t do much better than that on a pitch that far outside of the strike zone. Got him to chase on the two strike count, but he wasn’t fooled. He hit that ball really well. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Lauriano batting for the second time and that’s strike one man at first. One away. Lauraniano needs just one more homer to reach 100 in the big leagues. Check swing called strike. Yeah, and making it to a 100 homers would be quite the career accomplishment for him. Out of the more than 20,000 players to take an at bat in the majors, less than 5% have ever hit 100 dingers. got him looking. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And it’s a hitter. It’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. It’s hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. Now it’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. Fly to left his first time. Ball one, no strikes. Furlander moved to first. Oh, the throw is wild. Hey, [Applause] watch out. Two outs. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. [Music] Swing and a ball driven out to center. That’s back onto the garden. Netting and out of here. Home run. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 3-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. So two away with nobody on. So digging in now for San Diego, Freddy Fine. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Two down. Nobody on. Line drive. Ramos makes the grab and that’s the third out, but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. And this is now a 31 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Now it’s the right fielder, Drew Gilbert. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. Getting that first hit at the big league level. this to third. Tosses to first and that’s the first out in the bottom of the fifth. Now batting left fielder Elliot back to the leadoff spot in the Giants lineup. And now Elliot Ramos. He’s two for two. He’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result he’s been able to keep his pitch count low. throwing the ball very well right now in there at the knees. It’s 0 and one. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Finds his way through base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way and it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Got a pitch he liked and he got it done. Man at first with one gone. Raphael Devers the next Giant to hit. Ball one, no strikes. [Music] swing and a miss as he was out front. Didn’t recognize off speed. Thought it was fast ball a little bit out in front. [Applause] The 1-1 is fouled off. Ramos stands at first with one out. fouls it off. Still one and two. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. That’s down and in. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just foul. The Padres’s leading by two. Last half of inning number five. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Will Adam now at the plate for two in this one. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff and he’s really good at hitting it. That one outside and that is ball one. Definitely a frustrating day for the offense, but when they look at it, this guy’s had his best stuff. been painting the corners, working on the edges, and changing speeds. Just a difficult one. You tip your cap. Next offering upstairs. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. That one finds the zone. And that is strike one. And the strike in there. That front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plate. Two-2 now. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. In the air, left field down the line. Lauriano sprinting after it and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball up the middle and that squirts through. And now first and second with two outs. Here’s a cleanup hitter for the Giants, Wilmer Flores. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Swung on. Belted on a dead sprint. Racing back and that one’s gone into the bleachers. A threerun dinger. His 13th home run of the season. And now they’re out in front. It’s 43. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. [Applause] Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Dylan CE won’t go any further tonight and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. Back with a new arm in a minute. So, the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound. Nick Petta coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. There you go. So, two down and here is Matt Chapman. Ripped on a line to center. Merrill snags it and that will end the inning. One more look at the big blow for the Giants. Bye-bye, baby. A three-run homer. It’s now a 43 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. back here at Oracle Park. And now the right fielder, Fernando Tatiz Jr. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. You know, this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind. If he can get on, it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about. That misses now. One and two. Movement in the bullpen. Spencer Bivvens up and throwing. Tang also getting ready and Tatis able to stay alive. Here’s a one-two. Stays alive. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Off to a good start with a leadoff nod. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. So Bob Melvin out of the dugout and he’s ready to make a move. Verlander done in this one and he had to battle. Nothing came easy in this start but he leaves with the lead. New arm when we get back now number 88 takes over on the mound. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. No outs. Runner at first. And now the DH, Luis Araz. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boo. Step off throw to first. Tatis dives back in. There’s the strike quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. Spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. [Applause] caught him looking for the K. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. He got three straight fast balls. Looking in the 02 count just to pour it back. Here comes Manny Machado. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Good miss with that change up away. He needs a ball on the ground for a double play. Minimize the potential threat right here on the hitter side. Nice job of laying off that pitch with the go ahead run at the plate and we’re the top half of the six. Way to lay off that pitch down. Ryan O’Harn in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Music] The kick the 3-2 gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. [Music] Gets a piece and stays alive. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Tatis around second. Here comes the throw and he’s out. Hey, as a former center fielder, I’m feeling pretty good right now. That’s a excellent job by this guy to come up throwing and deliver a strike to third base. Now, for the offense, that’s a tough one to swallow because you never want to lose a runner in scoring position by making an out at third base. digging in. Ryan O’Harn, that’s to third. Tosses to first and that is the inning. So, no runs on two base hits. No errors and one left on. 678 do in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Giants four and the Padres’s three. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now Casey Schmidt swing and a miss. Strike one. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Jeremiah Estrada, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Next offering is fouled back. Owen Chu now and that’s outside. Really good take especially with two strikes. cut on and miss. Struck him out. One gone here. Typically that high fast ball if it’s close to the top of the strike zone, a hitter, if he’s prepared for it, can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end, which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss. One down. Base is empty. Foul ball there. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the six. That one missed. Next offering upstairs. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Next to hit, Patrick Bailey. And there’s the strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. And that one hit to first and foul ball. Let’s go. Foul ball still 0 and two. Lee leads off first with one away in the dirt [Music] now. That’s smacked to right center. They got it for out number two. Drew Gilbert, the next Giant to hit. Right fielder Drew Gilbert. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And that’s in for a strike. Francisco. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Two outs. struck him out swinging. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. No runs on no hits, no errors, and one man left. We’re through six full. It’s the Giants four and the Padres’s three. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Spencer Bivvens. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Here’s Bogard. Now, Xander Bogart. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. But a short stop, takes the ball. Little chopper rolls foul. Next pitch inside. Two and two. Looking to get the tying run on base. That one down the line. And it stays fair. Here comes the throw. And the tying runs at second base with a double. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Even though he was really late on it, he clearly barreled the ball because that one was ripped down the line. He had to be really short with that swing, not get beat by that pitch. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. So the tying run in scoring position now. And now Jackson Merrill one for two. That one finds the zone and that’s strike one. Just missed. So the tying run at second. Ground ball up the middle. Adamus the throw to first. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit. Hit the ball on the ground. Kill some worms while you’re at it. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. He’s sitting on 99 career homers. We’ll see if this is the moment to notch number 100. [Applause] Line drive. Makes the grab and there’s two out. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove, but you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Here comes the manager out of the Giants dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Spencer Bivvens out of the game and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now pitching. So they bring on the veteran Matt Gage and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. He’s already homerred in this game. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate, try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. That one hooked foul. Man on second, two down. And that one fouled off. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. And now two and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Got him. And the Padres’s waste a chance. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay. as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Jeremiah Estrada just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Estrada. Well, one-run game. Now it’s the Giants leadoff hitter Elliot Ramos. Three for three with three singles. First offering and it just misses. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Got him on the offbalance throw. One up, one down. Now batting the designated hitter. Here’s Raphael dev [Music] swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Francisco. [Music] And that one inside and it hit him. He had two strikes on him. Eddie hit him. Will Adamis the next Giant to hit. One for three. off the mark there. And that’s ball one. Francisco. And that’s in for a strike, man. 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers. [Music] Here’s the pitch to Adamus with a short stop. Takes the ball. Swaying and a miss. And now two and two. Des the base runner at first with one out. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. All right, let’s go. Swing and a miss at the splitter and it’s a strike out. Well, that splitter out of the hand, it just sort of jumps on you and your interpretation is here comes a fast ball again. Well, it never really reaches because the bottom falls out of it and you swing over the top. And that’s why they call it a split finger fast ball because it looks like a four seamer. Giants. And that drops in for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Two outs. [Applause] You got popped up foul territory behind the plate. Firm mean right there to make the grab and that’s the inning. One left for San Francisco and it remains a 4-3 game. We go to the eighth and now the catcher comes up to hit Freddy Fine fouled off. He was late. Next pitch is downstairs. There’s the swinging a miss. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that’s down, that’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. That one way inside. Line drive. Pulls it in. One away. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. fought off foul. Holding on to a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the eighth right through there for a strike. And that one almost hit him. that misses the zone. Two and two on the ground to third. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Here comes the manager out of the Giants dugout and he will make a move to the pad. Matt Gage will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching. Pitching change here. Kai 10. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Luis Araz the next up for the Padres’s known for his late inning heroics. Breaking ball inside. One and0 in the air left field down the line and it drops in and the tying run is on base. A late jump and I think that was the difference on the playbook. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Runner at first with two away. Here’s Manny Machado. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Well, with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. swings through that right now. They’re looking for something. Hit hard into the gaps. Give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first on the ground out to short. Zips it across and that is that one left for San Diego. Still down a run. It’s 4-3. back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jason Adams. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Now it’s Matt Chapman for the Giants. Third baseman Matt Chapman out to center. Merrill has this one sized up. Pulls it in and there’s one away. He was all over that first pitch fast. Just barely missed it. Man, this guy was ready to hit. And up next for the Giants, Casey Schmidt. Adam in his fifth season, 33 years old, and they went out and made a trade for him last season. And first offering is fouled off. Giants. And that drops in for a strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Number 76 up and loosening in the pen. the lefty warming up as well. Base is empty, one away here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. And a foul ball. He stays alive. and that one in the air center field. Merrill brings it in with a nice running and grabbed. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Lee stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Makes the play and it’s out number three. So they make short work of him there. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Giants four and the Padres’s three. Now pitching. Welcome back. And here comes the closer Randy Rodriguez. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. Well, one-run game. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s. Ryan O’Harn 0 for three in this one. First pitch just misses and another ball. you get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there’s some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if you will. Xander Bogarts in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here and fouled off the 3-1. This one belted deep left field on its way. Gone. That’s one way to quiet the crowd. Home run number 15 on the year and we’re starting over. It’s 44. These fans are just heartbroken right now. There was a fast ball down the middle. I don’t think the hitter recognized the pitch, but once he did, was quick enough to get it in play with some authority. He got that up and out of here. Here’s Xander Bogarts. swing and a miss as he was late that time. Bogart swings through that one. Action in the pen down there. Tristan Beck getting loose out there. [Applause] Up and in. And the count is one and two. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. I love to see guys compete and I know he’s frustrated that he wasn’t able to do anything with that pitch. You see it so well, but you have to respect the upper 90s velocity. Man, it is hard to catch up to. And the batter now, Jackson Merrill. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. One out, base is empty and a run in here in the top of the ninth. Swing and a ball popped in the air out to shallow center. That’s out number two. Now batting leftielder. Here’s the left fielder, Ramon Lauraniano. Possibly thinking about home run number 100 here. He’s just one shy of that milestone. And that misses ball one. Hit in the air. Center field. Lee sizing this one up. Brings it in. And that is that. Padres’s kned up with this solo homer. It’s now tied 4-4. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Adrien Morome. Well, you see the RA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. And that is out of play. Next offering way off the plate, activity in the bullpen. Robert Suarez, the closer of the staff, is throwing. Tied at four. And there’s a ball. [Applause] and a swing and a miss and they get the lead off man in the ninth. Well, Boo, I’ll tell you when he goes to look at the video of that pitch, he’s going to want to punch himself. That slider had hit me written all over it and clearly he just got a little too excited and was out in front. Tell you what, when you get a pitch like that, you cannot miss it. Those have a chance to go a long way. So digging in, Drew Gilbert 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Up the middle fires over to first and a couple of quick outs. Now batting leftielder Elliot Elliot Ramos the next Giant to hit. Come on. First pitch misses. Hard ground ball base knock. So a two out knock and that puts the winning run on first. Well, here we go. Winning run is on base with two away. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Raphael De’s up to hit. De’s the babyfaced assassin. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. [Applause] Trying to send this extra innings. Chop to the left side. Machado zips it to first. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. So they can’t come up with the winning run and that means we’ll have to go a little longer here tonight to find a winner. And we are tied 44. And we’re back. We’re in extras here. Here’s the second baseman Jake Croninworth. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. [Applause] Up and in. And the count is one and one. Just missed. [Music] And that’s off the outside edge and the count is three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Ball four. He walked him and that keeps things going. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Freddy Fine the next up for the Padres’s. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. That one misses and that’s ball one. Well, he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse. Then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this. Tied at four and a count one and two. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well done behind the dish. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. Next pitch is outside. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, two, don’t miss in the zone because that’s where you can get hurt. Squirts away a little bit. Tag. Ow. They cut down the go-ahead run at third. Yeah, that’s just a mental mistake right there. You’re already in scoring position and you’re the potential go-ahead run. Unless you’re standing up as you get to third base, you should not be going anywhere. Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. Swing and a miss. And he got him. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Back here in San Francisco, the batter now, Will Thomas. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah. I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. back to work. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Pitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. line drive and that’s a base hit into center field heading for the plate. Now a long throw home. The winning run crosses the plate and the Giants walk it off in extra innings. [Applause] You know he had to feel the pressure. Winning run on second base. has found a way to make solid contact and the winning run comes across to score. Everyone going crazy. Exciting finish to this game today. Close one here today and your final 54. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
