🔴LIVE 🔴Los Angeles Dodgers VS Los Angeles Angels/August 11/ Mlb Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
league ball on MLB the show. It’s the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels. First pitch coming your way next. And now, please welcome the Los Angeles Angels. Just about set to go and getting the start for the Angels, Jack Kachanowitz. And Chris, he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do it. Oh, now this is blasted way back there on its way. Gone. The first batter of the game leaves the yard and the Dodgers have the lead. It’s one- nothing. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. Well, so much for settling into this game, Boo. No courtesy. First pitch take right there. He was ready from the second he stepped into the box, got a pitch to hit, jumped all over it. I tell you what, that’ll fire up the guys in your dugout. Now it’s Mookie Betts. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. That one way inside. That’s off the plate. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Next offering is fouled back the 3-1. Swinging a foul straight back the pitch. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. And up to the plate is Will Smith. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average hit on the ground to short. Neto, not in time and he reaches safely. Oh, that’s a really tough play no matter who you are, but I think he has a chance to get him at first if he’s just able to get that throw off a little quicker. It looked like he took one extra step to set himself and get a grip on the ball. Freddy Freeman up to the dish. Another solid power season. That’s through there for a strike. Very humble guy and you know on the field off the field and he goes about his at bats in that way. Boog. He’s you know just trying to stay with the plan and that plan is hit the ball to left center field, drive the ball that way, let it travel. Yep. That’s in there and it’s 0 and two outside with a breaking ball. Smith the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Blind drive. That’s a base hit into right field. The throw to third and the throws off line. Safe at third. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Nice line drive to the pole side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Here’s Tay Oscar Hernandez. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter and get out of it with minimal damage. First and third, one down. swings through that one. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. Got him swinging for the strikeout. In there safely. Batting six, centerielder Andy Pah. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Andy Pahes and that skips in the dirt. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. That’s too low and it’s two and0. Second and third, two down. Bounce to the left side. Ranifo over to first. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Looking back at the solo blast that let off the game. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching the Freeway Series on the show. back in Anaheim and on the hill the big righty big Tyler Glass now and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah, and you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this, he’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Zack Neto leading things off and takes a strike. Come on, Zack. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. So hard to touch. I mean, at the top of the zone, 99, 98, even 97 as pitchers do such a good job of teasing that part of the zone, just elevating a little bit. It looks good because you see it for a good while as a hitter. Looks juicy and by the time you swing, it’s almost in the catcher’s mid. the high heat. Too much on that one. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. And now here is Nolan Showell and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. One out. Base is empty. swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and makes the grab and there’s two down. All right, let’s take a look at the Angels lineup. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Taylor Ward and Boo. He’s a big time run producer for these guys, man. leading the team in homers, runs batted in, doing damage on the regular, man. Making opposing pitchers just sweat out there. It’s kind of fun to watch. Get ready for a show when he steps into the box. All right, Mike. Come on. Mike Trout stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Two outs. Base is empty. Next pitch in for a strike. And the count one and two. Fouls it back with two strikes. Come on. Hit hard on the ground to short. Tosses to first. Inning over. Angels held in check. They’re down one- nothing. Second inning set to go. And now the veteran third baseman Maxy. And that’s in the dirt. Carl Dixon working the plate in this one. You know, we often hear and talk about umpires being a pitcher’s umpire, but Boo Dixon maybe a little bit more hitter friendly than most. He’s kind of tight on the corners. So, we’ll see if that comes into play at all in this one. How much were you aware of the umpire scouting report or even who was going to be umpiring? Not a whole lot. I mean, there were a couple of umpires that weren’t real good, but outside of that, you just kind of went into the game, especially back when I was playing. Ground ball up the middle. Needto whips it to first. They get the out on my good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Miguel Rojas at the plate. line drive, reaching for it and brings it in. Knight right Alex. Alex Call steps to the plate for the Dodgers. And that one is in for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. And that’s outside now. One and two. hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. So the two out knock extends the inning and sends them back to the top of the order. Now batting designated hitter Michael Conorto. And here is Michael Conorto. He’s already homered in this game. And a curve misses outside. Ball one. right through there for a strike. Way out front for strike two. bows it off. Still one and two. Call off of first with two away. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. So no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Dodgers one and the Angels nothing. back here at Angel Stadium ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now it’s going to be Taylor Ward taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Yeah, that’s fouled off. So here’s an interesting note on glass. Now, he’s been known to look at photos of people he doesn’t like before his starts. It’s a way for him to kind of get angry and then he carries that anger out to the mound to help him pitch. Sounds like a good strategy to me, but I wonder who he’s looking at. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Well, we see it a lot more these days than we ever did when I played, but a slider in the 90s still catches your attention even if you’re sitting on the pitch. Good luck recognizing that tight spin and adjusting to the late break. Here’s Joe Adel. Fast ball for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. off to a strong start, Singy, as he’s punched out three of the first five he’s faced. Well, he’s definitely minimizing contact. He can get the swing and miss when he needs it, but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him, allowing some balls in play as well. And next for the Angels, Luis Reanifo. Check swing called strike. Angels swinging a drive deep right field. Call raging back towards the wall and it’s gone. It’s his eighth home run of the year. It’s 1-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, he almost robbed the home run right there. And I tell you what, he’d love another crack at it. During batting practice, you always like to work on that and so close, but that one was just out of his reach. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Logan O’Happy the next to hit for the Angels. And strike one to the catcher. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. He’s in a great spot right here ahead in the count. 02. All four pitches in play right here, partner. That’s rifted base hit and that keeps the inning alive. Batting Christian Moore the next to hit for the Angels. He was late there. Strike one. One’s the count. Swinging a miss. 99. How do you do? That was straight queso right there. Two outs. That one just misses. Close pitch there. And he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Come on, let’s go. Just misses. Two and two. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Tied up here in the early going. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Oh, what was that? Angels get one with a solo homer. Call even now at 11. You’re dialed into the show. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s Mukie Betts. Now sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. Coach Chanowitz back to work. High in the air out to right and there’s one down. The batter now will be Will Smith. Reached on an infield single his first time. Come on, Angels. Let’s go. Smith measures 5′ 10 in, 29 years old. A former first round pick back in 2016. That one drilled left field and foul ball. One down, base is empty. Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That one misses. Now one and two. Swinging a miss. That one in the dirt on first in time for the second out. Good job to clean it up after the drop third strike. That’s a pretty nasty pitch right there. I’d call it a power curveball in the 80s. It’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swinging strikeout. And it finds its way through for a hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield, so I think he’ll be happy with that swing. definitely generated some good bats speed. Runner at first with two away. Here’s the left fielder, Tay Oscar Hernandez, ripped on a line to center. Brings it in. And that’s the third out. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. We head now to the home half of inning number three. All tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Set for the bottom of the third. And now number 31. And a foul ball. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. All right. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Got him swinging. That’s that classic wipeout slider below the zone right there. Just nasty. It looks like a fast ball thigh high that you got to protect the zone and then it’s just that late break that fools you and kind of makes you look silly. Zack Neto the next to hit for the Angels. His first at bat was a strikeout and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. That missed by a lot. And the count is one and two. The shorts stop takes a ball. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Glass now ready and deals fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Backto back strikeouts to start the frame and that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches. Throwing them where he wants to right now. So we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. Nolan Shanuel the next to hit for the Angels. 0 for one with a fly out to center. First pitch misses. You have to be creative pitching against bad ball hitters. You got to add some velocity, subtract at times. Just avoiding the heart of the plate isn’t always going to be enough. Guys like this can hurt you with pitches you wouldn’t expect them to swing at. Yeah, a big swing and a miss. I got a ball. One strike. Come on, Angels. Swings through that one for strike two. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. Hitters got to look down in the zone. One, two now. Battling here as he fouls it away. fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. That’s to third. It’s in and out of his glove. Still able to fire over. He beats the throw and he’s out at first. Now batting. And now batting Mike Trout. He is quite an athlete. I mean, you look around the other sports, basketball, football, you feel like he could thrive in one of those sports, too. Angels. And that misses ball one. The two-hole hitter showing so much versatility, understanding the situation, gets on base with two out to bring possibly the best hitters in this lineup to the plate in this inning. And now it’s even up. One ball, one strike. Next offering misses down and away. Yeah, hammers that one deep left field and forget it. That’s worth the price of admission. His 21st of the year. It’s 3-1 singing. That’s number 399 for his career. One more to go to reach 400. It’s kind of unfathomable and I’m sure he knows it. He’s put together quite the career to get to this point. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. So, two away with nobody on. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Taylor Ward. He struck out swinging at his first atbat. That one off the mark and that is ball one. Fast ball for a strike. Base is empty. Two away. But two runs are in here in the last half of the third. swinging a miss as he was late. One ball, two strike and a ball evens a count. Ouch. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Stepping in the long ball threat, Joe Adell. He’s 0 for one. You have to be careful throwing him breaking pitches even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff. And he’s really good at hitting it. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. That’s off the inside corner. One and one. Ward off of first with two away. That’s outside. Two and one. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. and they’ll do it again. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Call sizing this one up. He’s there. He’s got it. And that ends the inning. Mike Trout doing Mike Trout things. And this is now a 31 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back for more of the Freeway Series. digging in. Andy Pahes. First offering and it just misses. You know, these Dodgers just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see, but I think they have to. That one catches the zone. That is strike two. swings through it and that’s a strike out. Beat him inside on that last pitch. And when you look back at the pitch sequence on that strikeout, it’s pretty interesting. Away, in away, and then back in again. Really commanded both sides of the plate right there. And that makes it pretty tough to get comfortable in the box. Here’s Max Muny grounded out his first time. Off the mark there. One and0. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. Swing and a liner. Foul off to the right. One down. Base is empty. in the dirt and a count. Two and one right through there for a strike. Oh, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle. Doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. Liner and this could be trouble around first heading for two. Muny into second. It’s a double. He was all over that one. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Here’s the second baseman, Miguel Rojas. He’s 0 for one. the other way and that’s just foul looking good. Swing and a chopper out to short. Got him. Good armside run to that same side hitter right there. Very difficult to put that ball in the air or get through it. Just bores in on the hands. Call. And now the right fielder, Alex Call. One for one with a single so far. Breaking ball through there for a strike. Two outs and one in scoring position. Had a swing and a bouncer. Foul of first. Fast ball. Almost got him there. Ruer at second. Two down. Waves at the bender for the strike out. No runs, one hit, a double, no errors, and one man left. On now to the bottom of the fourth. It’s the Angels three, and the Dodgers won. And we’re back. Bottom of the fourth. And now it’s switchhitting third baseman Luis Reano. and and that gets the top of the zone for a strike. You know, these Angels showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. 0 and two now. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Oh, really went aggressive in with that slider. Good two- strike pitch right there. At worst case scenario, it’s weak contact in play. Exactly where he and the catcher wanted it. Oh, takes low. Second trip to the plate in this one. fought off foul. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. And now two balls in a strike and that one fouled off. Let’s go. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Next offering is downstairs. Broken bat. Roll it to first and he handles it himself for the out. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. Now it’s the second baseman Christian Moore. Went down on strikes his first time through. This is important. And if he can go one, two, three here will be a very positive sign for him and for his team. Glass now back to work. The 01 and a foul ball. That’s a little bit low. Come on, Angels. Let’s go. Swing and a miss. Glass now with a strike out. Angels go down one, two, three, and the score stays three to one. Back for more of the freeway series. That’s a good We go to the top of the fifth. Now it’s the DH Michael Conforto. Come on Angels, let’s go. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. You know, these Dodgers, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Now batting short stop Mookie Betts. Mookie Betts will make his way to the plate. Bowl for two in this one. Angels swinging a foul out of play. He’s begging. Give me that pitch one more time. A hanging change up just out in front. Fouled off left side. So the Dodgers are going to have to try and come from behind and try and get that offense going. The shorts stop takes the ball. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Next pitch misses way outside. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Run around at first with one gone. Next up, the Dodgers catcher Will Smith. One for two. Misses again. Five in a row. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch. Not even close. Ground ball right side and it goes just fouled. Just missed. Betts the base runner at first with one out. Pitch misses there and now three and one. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking. Make sure that they don’t get any confidence. fouls one away and now three and two and ball four two aboard. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound, but you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. fouled off. He was late. And he can’t come up with it. Still finds a way to get off a throw. More for one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. And now Tay Oscar Hernandez been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Carson Fulmer preparing to come on if needed. Detmers a left-hander also throwing. That one hooked foul. Clearly hoping he could get a swing and miss on that, but doesn’t fool the hitter with that breaking ball. Nice job. Just couldn’t keep it fair. In the dirt, but kept close, but no advance from the runners. Tying run is at first. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And the one two misses to even the count. Two walks in the inning already. and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there. Like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. And that skips in the dirt. And that’ll load the bases. Well, the stage has been set for this offense. Boo. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Jack Kachanowitz out of the game and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching new pitcher in the game for the Angels, Conor Brogden. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. So up next, Andy Pahes. This one’s blistered. No doubt about it. Out of here. Grand slam. That should get the dugout going. Home run number 20 on the year. It’s 53. The brighter the lights, the more he shines. Yeah, this guy lives for big moments and right there made a statement big time. Singi, this was a mammoth home run over 460 ft according to Stackcast. You know, Boo, there only maybe 20 or so guys in the game that can hit a baseball that far, and it’s absolutely crazy it’s even that many. Such an impressive swing of the bat right there. So, two down. Here comes Max Muny. Both the infield and the outfield shifted over to the right. That’s in for a strike. Yeah, the strike absolutely frozen on that heater right down the middle and that’s a pitch you’re just not getting back now. He’s in a tough spot, especially after falling behind on a good first pitch. That one not close. It’s a ball in two strikes. gets a piece and stays alive. Broken bat and it’s popped up. Hauls it into the inning. Dodgers with a big blast. A grand slam. It’s now a 53 ball game. Back in Anaheim, we head to the bottom of the fifth. And now here’s a speed threat outfielder number 31. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Show Oti the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Try and getting loose as well. Let’s go Angels. Next pitch way upstairs. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Two balls, two strikes. And it remains two and two. and a swing and a miss. That’s his ninth strike out so far. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Back to the top of the Angels lineup. Now it’s the Angels leadoff man, Zack Netto, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. A short stop. Takes a ball. Hit in the air center field. Pahes sizes this one up. They got it for out number two. Now batting first base Nolan. And next for the Angels, Nolan Showell. Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. Little tardy on that fast ball. Is going to have to get it going a little quicker. Get that front foot down. Two down to there’s a foul ball. Let’s go. Come on, Anaheim. Inside and the count’s even at two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Offense held in check there. Five innings complete. It’s the Dodgers five and the Angels three. Back here at Angel Stadium. Start of the six, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading off, Miguel Rojas. Yeah, angels. Brogden back to work. Hammered down the right side but foul. Rojos goes 5 feet 11 in. 36 years old and he was born in Venezuela. And now the one swing and a highf fly ball left field. Ward pulls it down and he makes the catch. One away. Now batting right Alex call now at the plate just off the inside edge. Base is empty one away and we’re the top half of the sixth. Angels. Next offering is in for a strike. just missed. Right side hard hit. Tosses to first. Two gone. All right, let’s go. Now batting designated hitter Michael Conorto. The batter will be Michael Conforto. He’s already homerred here in this one. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. And that extends the inning for Mooky Betts. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s Mookie now. Come on, Angels. Here we go. Check swing called strike. Confor leads off first with two down to the inning. Come on, let’s go. Swing and a miss. 0 and two. And a foul ball. He stays alive. You got this. On the ground to third. Dives and he can’t hang on to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Now batting catcher Will Smith. Will Smith to the plate. In the air right field. Adele moves under it. He makes the grab and that is that. Dodgers strand a couple and it remains 53. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Show Otani. And if you dig into his walk rate, his numbers are really impressive. He’s really filled up the strike zone this season. So these batters better be ready to swing the bats. And leading off for the Hill, designated hitter Mike Trout and that is out of play. You know, these Angels really impressed me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see him go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. Ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. And a swing and a miss and one out now. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Taylor Ward the next to hit for the Angels. Right through there for a strike. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. One down. Base is empty. Pitch in the dirt and a count. Two on one. The Dodgers leading by two here in the bottom of the sixth. Swings and misses coming out of the bullpen and throwing BB’s. Chance to strike out the side. Now you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Next to hit, Joe Adell. And that’s in for a strike. That was the sweeper, but it missed. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Ripped on the ground to second. Throw on to Freeman. Angels retired. One, two, three. Angels go quietly there. Still a two-run deficit. It’s 5-3. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the M, Andrew Chaffen. And he’s had a really hard time throwing strikes so far this season. His walk rate is up there among the worst in the league for relievers. Here is Freddy Freeman. First base Freddy Freeman. Angels. As the lefty gets to work, there’s the strike. Angels check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Sit him down. That’s a ball. Fights it off. You’ll see another to the right side. Moore had the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh. Good late bite on that slider. Got the hitter out front. Rolled over on it. Exactly what it was supposed to do. Tayscar Hernandez getting ready to hit. Not close with that one. And it’s one and0. Action in the pen down there. Luis Garcia, the right-handed sinker baller. He looks to be readying himself. Burke getting cranked up as well. Angels and the one and that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. And he takes a strike. Foul ball still a one and two count. in the air fairly deep to right field. Reaching for it, makes the catch. Got to love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. Here’s the center fielder, Andy Pahus. Launched a grand slam earlier in the game. That was back in the fifth. And I’d say we felt the impact of that grand slam ever since. Four runs on one swing. It’s just an absolute game changer. Angels. He swings and fouls one off. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. And that one wrapped foul. Foul ball still 0 and two. Two outs. Just misses the mark outside the zone. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Stays alive. Ground ball right side. And that is the inning. And leading off for the hills, third base, Louise Ranifo. Foul ball there. Next pitch is outside. Nope. Inside ball two and strike two strikes. chopped to third. Muny whips it across and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. And now the catcher comes up to Logan Ohappy. That’s in there. Strike one. The Dodgers trying to protect a two-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. And that one sliced foul and foul ball. These hitters like this that have so much power, look forward to seeing them hit the ball a long way. But if you’re in the stands or you’re in a broadcast booth or you’re a writer, better keep your eye on the game. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. That K is his third of the game. Well, a wellthrown splitter is going to do exactly that. Get you off balance, thinking it’s a fast ball. Very similar to a change up, but often times a split’s going to have even more downward movement with more velocity. Good pitch. out to short. Bats up with it. Safe at first and an infield single keeps the inning going with two outs. You just want to find a way to keep the line moving for the next guy. So, an infield single right there does the job. Nicely done. Just putting it in play and getting down to first to keep this inning alive. You never know what might come next as a result. And now the center fielder And the first offering is not close. Tying run at the plate. That one missed. Struggled a little bit in this one. couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at two and 0. That misses and it’s 3 and 0. Movement in the bullpen. Rex Ventura looks to be getting ready for manager Dave Roberts. The tying run at the plate. Fast for a strike. And the tying run is on base. Pretty much the last thing you want from your bullpin arms are free passes, especially in spots like this. Make the team earn their way on. And now the shorts stop. Zack Neto. A pair of strikeouts. And he’s flyed to center. Right through there for a strike. And he’ll one one. This one driven deep center field on its way. Home run. He’ll circle the bases. His second homer of this series. It’s 65 Singi. That’s his 50th career homer. 50 might not sound like a huge number, but it’s a nice little milestone that a lot of guys don’t get to. They thought he could blow a high fast ball by him, but he was ready for it. Look at how quickly he jumped on that pitch. And I think Dave Roberts is coming out of the dugout. Otani will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. All right, let’s go. to the mound. Now they turn to Blake Trinan. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So two down now. The number two hitter Nolan Showell misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. Two down. Nobody on. And another ball. gets the outside corner with that one. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. And that one in there at the knees for a strike. Two and two. And that’s downstairs and outside. Smoked on the ground to second in plenty of time to first. That’s the third out. Inning over. Angels add three on this blast. It’s now 65. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Carson Fulmer. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Here comes Max Mudsy, one for three. A lot of times you’re looking for a guy to get that tiein run on base, but because of the power, you want him to tie up the game with one swing here. And that one fouled off. Looking to get the tying run on base and a base hit. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front and ripped it into the outfield, that’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Miguel Rojas 0 for three in this one and fouled off with the go-ahead run at the plate. And we’re in the top of the eighth. finish him. Oh, and two now. Swings and misses. Struck him out and the runner holds. Oh, that’s a curve ball that people like to describe as a hammer or Uncle Charlie and you can see why. It’s not a looping slow curve. He throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end. So, digging in, Alex call. swinging a ground ball. Ranifo to second and that’s two. Poetry in motion there as the second baseman turns the double play. Nice throw to first and that’s the way to end the inning. Now back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Alex Via. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Here’s Trout. And a major milestone is right around the corner. One home run short of 400 for his career. Get another one. And ball one. Trout would reach 400 career homers with one more long ball. Well, if Well, let me say when he hits number 400, that’s really special. Not even 70 players in MLB history have done it. Al Kaline didn’t. Neither did Joe Deaggio, Larry Walker, Jim Rice, Orlando Sepa, or Tony Perez. And all of those guys are Hall of Fame sluggers. Good eye in that spot. On the ground to the left and that’s just foul. Let’s go. Angel. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Freeman makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting left fielder Taylor Ward. Now the left fielder Taylor Ward. There’s a strike. Activity in the bullpen. Alexis Diaz getting loose out there. Bond the lefty warming up as well. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. Just off the inside edge. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Here we go. Next offering is outside. That one ripped. That’s back. Going gone. He made him pay for that one. His 28th home run of the season. And they add on. It’s 75. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle, Boo. And he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Now it’s the right fielder Joe Adele 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Out to short. Get on your horse. Bet whips it to first. And there are two outs. Now batting third base Lango. Two outs. Base is empty. Now at the plate, Luis Reano. That’s inside. Next offering is fouled back. just missed. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. Fouls one off. Two and two. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. swing and a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. Makes the play and it’s out number three. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. Last chance coming up here for the Dodgers. Now pitching. back and on the mound is the closer Kennley Jansen. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So, this game has gone to plan more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. Back to the top of the order. Michael Conorto will climb in. Michael Conorto. That’s a strike going on. Jansen a 65 righty. He throws a cutter, a slider, and he works in a two seamer. The 01. just missed. That one is absolutely belted. Adele moving back on it onto the track and he makes the catch. batting. He’s two outs away. Mookie digs in here. Foul ball on the ground out to Short. Slings it across and Betts is gone. Couple of pitches and a quick out. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Here’s the catcher, Will Smith. He’s got the power, but great contact skills. One of the best contact hitters in the game. And that one cutting but missing down low. Jansen fires and that one missing low. You get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there’s some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if you will. Up and in. Three and O. Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. The right-hander gives up the two out walk and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. And here’s Freddy Freeman. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Late in the game, everyone gets a little tighter. Way to get ahead on a really good hitter right there with the tying run at the plate here in the top of the ninth. And a big swing and a miss. Jansen is just one strike away. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, this was a fun game all the way around. We saw plenty of action. 12 runs total on the board, but a pretty close finish at the end. A 75 final score in this one. Kenley Jansen picking up the save for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
