Well, all the boys are in pretty good shape. They’ve been hustling and bearing down and uh it looks we got a great bunch of youngsters here. Got a lot of good young ball players. Got great spirit. Guess Haynes on the left, Dizzy Dean in the center, Mooney on the right. Two old St. Louis Cardinal pitcher in the Philadelphia. He looks pretty good and he’s the only highwan in the National League. Jim Wilson, catcher, who I expect to catch about 125 or 30 ball games. I have great hopes of him doing it. Everybody knows Pep. Pep’s coming back this year as strong as he was in 1931. Pepper Martin himself and his famous slide. You can always depend on him for a joke, but he also can play ball. No fooling about that either. And did you know that Pepper can do some fancy juggling? All right, Professor Martin. The Cardinals have always come up with outstanding performers. The gas house gang, the cards of the early 30s had many and real crowd-leasers, fellas like Pepper Martin. [Applause] At all times, it was heads up ball under plane manager Frankie FR. They won a pennant in a world’s championship in 1934 with a mound staff headed by my fall staff partner Dizzy Dean. That year, Odiz won 30 games while his younger brother Paul took 19. 49 games between them. Then in a series, each won two more. When the Deans weren’t out there, it was wild Bill Halahan, Tex Carlton, or some other of Fresh’s twirling talent. Jess Haynes, for instance. But the Gas House gang had more than pitchers. Left fielder Joe Medwick was one of baseball’s best right-handed hitters. Rip Collins with FR gave the club two switch hitters. Leo D. Roer, no hitter despite the bat here, was a great shortstop. Fresh’s sharpest penant competition. The St. Lewis Cardinals National League hopes for 1931. Looks like you got it in the bag this season. We want to uphold the president of the National League in the World Series. We are not in there yet, but it’s a long long go yet. Oh yeah. Got the best balance ball club in the National League. I don’t want the pitcher Jess Haynes has been throwing them across the old plate for 18 years and has counted on heavily to stop the athletic sluggers. In the 1930 season, every Cardinals player with over 300 at bats had a batting average over .300, the only time in history this has happened.

The 1931 St. Louis Cardinals seasonwas the team’s 50th season in St. Louis, Missouri and the 40th season in the National League. The Cardinals went 101–53 during the season and finished first in the National League. In the World Series, they beat the Philadelphia Athletics in 7 games.

Second baseman Frankie Frisch won the MVP Award this year, batting .311, with 4 home runs and 82 RBIs.

The 1932 St. Louis Cardinals seasonwas the team’s 51st season in St. Louis, Missouri and its 41st season in the National League. The Cardinals went 72–82 during the season and finished sixth in the National League. This was the first season to feature numbers on the back of the Cardinals’ uniforms.

September 30, 1931: Carey Selph was drafted from the Cardinals by the Chicago White Sox in the 1931 rule 5 draft.

The 1933 St. Louis Cardinals seasonwas the team’s 52nd season in St. Louis, Missouri and its 42nd season in the National League. The Cardinals went 82–71 during the season and finished fifth in the National League.

October 25, 1932: Rogers Hornsby was signed as a free agent by the Cardinals.

The 1934 St. Louis Cardinals seasonwas the team’s 53rd season in St. Louis, Missouri and the 43rd season in the National League. The Cardinals went 95–58 during the season and finished first in the National League. St. Louis won 18 of their last 23 games to overtake the New York Giants the last two days of the season. In the World Series, they defeated the Detroit Tigers in seven games, winning the last 11–0.

December 15, 1933: Ray Pepper was purchased from the Cardinals by the St. Louis Browns.

The 1935 St. Louis Cardinals seasonwas the team’s 54th season in St. Louis, Missouri and its 44th season in the National League. The Cardinals went 96–58 during the season and finished second in the National League.

October 2, 1934: Bill Lewis was drafted from the Cardinals by the Boston Braves in the 1934 rule 5 draft.

During the season, Dizzy Dean became the last pitcher to win at least 25 games in one season for the Cardinals in the 20th century.

  1. John McGraw's last big mistake was getting rid of Frank Frisch. Frisch went to the World Series in 1928, 1930, 1931 & 1934. McGraw never sniffed a pennant again.
