🔴LIVE🔴Miami Marlins VS Cleveland Guardians /August 12/ Baseball Summer Envivo /MLB The show 25
field inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Miami Marlins taking on the Cleveland Guardians. And now first pitch coming your way next. Cleveland just about ready to roll. And today’s starter Slade Sone. Well, that whip is just below the league average, and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. And at the plate for Miami, Xavier Edwards blind drive. That’s a base hit into right field. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. Here’s the rookie right fielder, Arberto Hernandez. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Sakonei the tall righty. He features a fourseam fastball, a slider, a change up, and he occasionally uses a curve turned on, but that’s foul down the third baseline. That pitch gets the inside corner. One and two. Well, when you can throw that big curve on the inside part of the plate, very difficult pitch for the hitter to get on plane with. You can have a lot of success if you can pitch in that location. Dive and he’s got it to first. Nicely done for the Owl. Great cat-like reflexes right there. Lays out, knocks the ball down, and then fires with that rocket arm all the way across the diamond. Man, put this guy on the mound. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And up next for Miami, Kyle Sters. First pitch misses. Smoked on the ground to second tosses to first. Two away. All right, let’s take a look at the lineup. And no doubt a big factor in this series so far. Ariberto Hernandez. Well, Boog, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position, are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. That’s a base hit as a run scores. So, Singi, let’s dive into the numbers courtesy of Stackcast. Do you even feel contact being made when you hit a ball that hard? No, I don’t think so, Boo. I mean, that’s just the best feeling in the world as a hitter. You square it up perfectly and it’s like you didn’t even swing the bat. And there are times the ball feels heavy off your bat. You know it. But this is not one of those cases. He sent this one flying 114 mph. So that’s flexing your muscles a little bit. Lopez off of first with two away. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Swung on belted and that should be extra bases and that’s going to roll to the wall coming home. He will score. Well done. Drives in the run. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. So up next, Eric Wagaman. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Two outs and one in scoring position. and delivers outside. They’ve got him working a little harder in this first frame than he anticipated. Man on second, two down. Pitch misses and the count is three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. And the right-hander deals fought off foul. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Out to short. Arius zips it to first. They limit the damage here. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. Onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Marlins two Guardians coming up. Back here with my pal Singi and towing the slab, Tyler Phillips. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. And most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Here’s the one hit on the ground to short and it gets by him. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Man at first, nobody out. Next is the designated hitter, Daniel Schnean. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field. That one back there. And it flies to the deepest part of the park. No doubt about this one. Home run. His 11th of the year. And this game is tied. It’s 2-2. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. With a low 90s fast, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient. Waited for it. It was like BP all over again. Here’s Jose Ramirez. Another solid power season. Line drive and this might be trouble around first. Heading for two into second and he’s got a double. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. And now the first baseman, Kyle Manzardo. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. First offering and it just misses. Singi maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners. Nobody out. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time. Good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Gabrielle Arias. That was the sweeper, but it missed. Hey, now let’s go and fouled off. Runner on the go and that one fouled off. Ramirez, the runner at third. Manzardo on at first with nobody out. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Swinging a drive deep right field into the corner but foul. I think ultimately you want to tie him up. get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. On the ground is short. Could be two. The throw to second and a run scores on the double play. Anel Martinez digs in for the Guardians. Anel Martinez misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. Two outs. Base is empty. And it’s fouled away. Hammered down the right side but foul. One and two now. That’s down and in. Really good take, especially with two strikes. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another two down on foul ball. Another two- two upcoming on the ground. Senoha handles, throws to first. Third out that ends the frame. Three runs for him here and they move ahead. Second inning coming up from Progressive Field. Guardians three and the Marlins two. Back now at Progressive Field. Second inning set to go. And now for the Marlins, Derek Hill. Sakone back to work right through there for a strike. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Liam Hicks the next up for the Marlins. Fouled off left side. Swanging a popup Arius. And there’s one down. Batt Javier Senoha. Javier Senoha. The next up for the Marlins. He gave up a couple of runs in the first. His offense picked him up. It’s time for him to settle in now and throw up some zeros on that scoreboard. swinging a ground ball. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. No throw. Safe at first. And we’ll see if it’s an error. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. Singled and scored his first time. Got it started a little too early. Strike one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Next offering is in for a strike. Larry Bullard making the calls behind the plate for us in this one. Pretty good strike zone. Well reviewed by those we talked to around the league. Yeah, he’s an umpire. He doesn’t get a lot of looks from players. maybe here and there once in a while, but he’s appreciated back there. And ball one. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. And that one is inside. That one is absolutely belted. And that gets down in the corner. One runs in. So headed for the plate. He will score and they take the lead. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. And at the plate for Miami, Ariberto Hernandez 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Just missed one ball. Hard hit left side. Sends it across to first and he’s out. Now batting the designated hitter, Kyle Kyle Sters getting ready to hit. Grounded out his first time. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Next offering is fouled back man at second. Good eye right there. His understanding of the strike zone very impressive. That was a very close 02 fastball. I just don’t know how you take that. chopped left side and that’s just foul. Edwards on its second with two down. Next pitch misses and now two balls and two strikes. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Two outs. Bows it back with two strikes. Next offering is downstairs. Executed that pitch very nicely. Just missed with it. And that’s a base hit into left field. Edwards around third and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. Bang bang play at the plate right there. Outfielder needed no help. An absolutely perfect throw to get him right on the money. Excellent tag by the catcher. And the inning ends on an awesome play. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the right fielder CJ Cayas. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Fast ball catches the corner at the knees. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Foul ball still a one and two count. fights it off. He’ll see another. Fouls it off. Still one and two. And there’s a ball. Got him. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Here’s Brian Rochio. Ripped to short. fires across the diamond. Already two out here in the home half of inning number two. Austin Hedges. Austin Hedges stands in. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. Just missed. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. The hitting’s going to come around. He’s going to figure it out. But right now, his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense. Next offering upstairs on the ground out to short. Sends it to first. Guardians go down in order. Nothing doing here this half. We head on down to the top of the third. It’s the Marlins four and the Guardians three. Back here in Cleveland onto the third inning and the batter will be the shortstop Otto Lopez. Cleveland and a foul ball. Been a rough start on the mound for this guy. in this third inning. So important for him to get on track, turn the page, settle in, do all those things you need to do to give your team a little bit of length in this one. Close but called a ball. And now it’s even one and one. I think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game. He’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start. The one-1 is fouled off. down. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. No messing around with the pitch calling in that sequence right there. Four pitches, all fast balls. Yeah, and that makes me think that was the plan before the at bat even started. If you think you can simply just beat a guy with only your fast ball, why throw him anything else until he shows you he can handle it. Now it’s going to be Dane Meyers. And first offering is fouled off. One out. Base is empty. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser. Oh, and a nice sliding stop. Takes it himself and he got him. Nicely done at first for the out. Just so impressed with the movement on that play. Footwork was excellent. The arm strength was there and of course the most important part was getting the out. Two outs, space is empty. Eric Wagaman the next up for the Marlins. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Yo, one. There’s the strike. And now one and two. cut on and missed and it’s a strike out and that is the inning and one two three go the Marlins and it remains a 4-3 game as we go to the last of the third. Here’s the Cleveland leadoff hitter, Steven Quan. Quan on the ground right side. And that one handled in plenty of time to first. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Now batting designated hitter Daniel. And now Daniel Schne. He’s already homerred here in this one. That’s a strike attacked with the sweeper. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That’s a hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Didn’t exactly square that one up, but sometimes you don’t have to. Nice line drive to the pole side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Man at first with one gone. Now it’s Jose Ramirez. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. At first, one gone. There’s a swing and a drive. Meyers long run dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. Schne relay throw home, but it’s offline. It’s 44. Backto back base hits. I love the approach he had right there with that pitch. Not trying to do too much, but still looking to drive it. And that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double. One out, runner at second. Kyle Manzardo the next to hit. One for one with a single so far. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. Meyers hauls it in. Two away. Now batting short stop Gabrielle Arias. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. And now the shorts stop Gabrielle Arias. He hit into a double play his first time up. And that’s in for a strike. Signs of activity in the pen for the Marlins. Valente Beoozo appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. base hit. They’re waving Ramirez home. The throws offline. He’s saved and it’s now 54. Picks himself up an RBI. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. So, two down and up next for Cleveland, Anel Martinez grounded out his first time right through there for a strike. One strike. Two runs across in the inning. You’re in the last half of the third. Next pitch is outside. Clearly, he hasn’t had it in this game. And looks like sooner than later, they’re going to have to go to the bullpen. Two outs. Fouls. pull one off. Two and two and misses inside. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. Drilled out towards left center field. Meyers raging back towards the wall and it bangs off the out of town scoreboard. Across is the runner from first and they take a two-run lead. He was all over that one. Anytime you can drive a ball into the gap the other way, it feels so good and that’s when you know you’re right where you need to be at the plate. It’s even better when it gets you extra bases. Got to love looking in at your dugout and seeing your teammates fired up. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Tyler Phillips will depart and the opener strategy clearly didn’t work out this time. New arm coming on. We’ll be back after a short break. The new pitcher in the game, Valente Beoo. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. So, in now for Cleveland, CJ Cayas. His first at bat was a strikeout. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. The O2 upstairs. Tap dances out of the way of that one. hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Three runs on, four hits, no errors, and one left on. On to inning number four. It’s the Guardian six and the Marlins four. Here in Cleveland, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Derek Hill. and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Well, he hasn’t quite settled in out there. Four runs in three innings. He’s going to have to have some quick one, two, three innings to pitch deep into this ball game. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Next offering down in the dirt. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. And that’s ruled the swing. It’s a strike out. Now that Liam Hicks the next up for the Marlins 0 for one with a fly out. You and I got a chance to broadcast the 2019 All-Star game and the city of Cleveland did such a great job. I felt like wherever you turned there was some type of ad for the All-Star game, a face of one of the players playing in the game. Thought the city overall supported the event really well. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Yeah, and I think the players backed it up from the home run derby and the show that was put on between, you know, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Pete Alonzo, and others. It was off the charts and then the game is always special. When you see the best in baseball, you remember how special this game is. And to be here at this ballpark, um, I think just was the icing on the cake. pitch is in the dirt. It’s two and two. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Well, when you commit to throwing an inside fast ball to your glove side across the strike zone, especially with two strikes, if you’re going to miss, you want to miss off the plate in. You do not want to leave it out over the heart of the plate. So, that was excellent execution on that pitch. really tied him up and he couldn’t get a piece at all. Senoha in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Now this is in the air down the line and that drops foul. Just misses the mark outside the zone. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Good eye in that spot. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. On the ground right side, he steps on the bag. Marlins set down in order and the Marlins down quietly. They trail it here six to four. Bottom four, stepping up for the Guardians. Brian Roio. All right, Sigy. Trivia time. Back when this ballpark opened 1994, one future Hall of Famer hit the first triple in the park and another hit the first homer by a Cleveland player. Think you know what they were? Okay, I know that Ken Griffy Jr. hit the first triple here, but first homer for Cleveland. Give me a hint. Switch hitter. That’s all you’re getting. Oh, dude. Eddie Murray, no doubt. Bam. Austin Hedges now center field. Hill. hauls it in for the out. Now batting left fielder Steven. Here’s the Cleveland leadoff hitter Steven Quan. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. Just missed. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat. Wagaman. There’s one return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. One hit in the inning, but no one left. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Guardian six and the Marlins four. We go to the top of the fifth now. It’s the Marlins leadoff hitter, Xavier Edwards. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Off the mark there. and one and one. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Ground ball up the middle, Arius. One up, one down. Up next for the Marlins, right fielder Hernandez. Ariberto Hernandez the next up for the Marlins. He’s grounded out a couple of times. on the corner for a strike. He’s gotten into a really good rhythm. Set down seven in a row. He just wants to get the baseball and deliver it as quickly as possible. Keep the momentum going. Ground ball left side and it goes just foul. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. This one in the air. Manardo under it. Pulls it in and there’s two away. Now batting the designated hitter Kyle. And now the DH Kyle Sters one for two. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. That one fouled off. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And that one upstairs and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Miami down in order. And the score remains 6-4. Back now at Progressive Field ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now here is Daniel Schnean. Bezo back to work. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball one. You know, these Guardians really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see him go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That’s back there. And it’s gone. Another homer. His second home run of the game. It’s 74. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the booth. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball. Squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. Jose Ramirez will hit next. hammers that one, curling down the line and fouled. Part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. And that’s off the outside edge. And the count is one and one. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Last half of inning number five. This one smoked on its way out of here. A solo shot. His 24th home run of the season. And they tack one on the board. It’s 84. Singi. The ball is jumping off his back. Yes, it is. Tons of loud contact. Man, it’s been impressive. Backto back jacks and this club is fired up right now, Boo. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Kyle Manzardo. And first offering is fouled off. hit hard on the ground to short and that’s the first out in the bottom of the fifth. Up next for the Guardians, the short stop. Gabrielle Arias digs in now. In there for strike one. Still only one out here in the inning. This one in the air. Edwards puts it away for the out. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Martinez. So, two down now. And here is Anel Martinez. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. Ball one there. And that’s through there for a strike. And the count even at one. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. In the air, left field down the line and it stays fair. He’s in with a double. And that’s his second double of the night. So runner at second, two down. CJ Cus now at the plate who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Ground ball to the right side and foul ball. And a foul ball. Martinez at second with two down. That misses the zone. Now one and two. And that just misses. That pitch was pretty borderline at the top of the zone and he’s not digging the call out there on the mound. Clearly pretty frustrated. So, he’s going to have to collect himself a little outside low. Three and two now. Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strikeout. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now an 8-4 score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher, Tanner By. He last pitched two days ago. So now it’s the four-hole hitter, Otto Lopez. Lopez. That one misses ball one. You know, these Marlins, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve launched six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. Now, batting leftielder D. So, digging in, Dane Meyers. There’s the strike. Movement in the bullpen. Nick Enright preparing to come on if needed. Hernandez getting loose as well. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. And they have their first hit since the second inning. Now batting number 33 Eric Wagaman the next up for the Marlins. Bowl for two in this one. Throw over to first. Meyers back in on a dive. Now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But you know at the very least if you can find a way to manufacture that run from first. It feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. going to now just misses with that one. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two away. Now batting. So up next, Derek Hill. Ball one, no strikes. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. And the 10 in there at the knees for a strike. The Fish down by four and we’re the top half of the six. Cleveland. And that one hit to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One hit, one left. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the sixth. Guardians eight and the Marlins four. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the second baseman, Brian Rochio. Brian Roio. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. popped in the air left field Meyers and out number one on the grab. Now batting catcher Austin. And up next for Cleveland, Austin Hedges. This guy one of the best defensive catchers going. You talk about framing, the ability to block, catch, and throw. He is at the top of the game. Ball one and a pitch inside. Really good athlete and many times we talk about, you know, the feet of infielders. This catcher as well, really quick feet. He’s able to recognize the pitch, see the trajectory, and get into a spot where he can block those balls and keep them from going to the back stop. This one in the air. Wagamin moving under this one. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting leftielder. So the batting order turns over and now Steven Quan one for three and first offering is fouled off. Two down on and a big swing and a miss. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. Throw something maybe down in the dirt. Foul ball still 0 and two. Two outs. That one down the line. And that’s just foul. That’s inside. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. This one in the air center field. Hill settles under it and makes the catch and that ends the inning. And we’re back all set for the start of the inning. Now it’s the Marlins catcher Liam Hicks. Just missed by the 6-2 righty. He features a fourseam fast ball, a cutter, a change up, a slider, and he occasionally uses a curve. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. with that. You don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. Two. That misses the zone. Three and one now. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. Well, that’s a really good take right there. And that’s just mentally prepared knowing that if it’s not on a TE, you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with. Not easy to lay off, but he did an excellent job in that plate appearance. So lays off down low as he digs in for the third time. Next pitch is downstairs. If you’re gonna get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving. Don’t try to do too much.” Check swing and he went. Now two balls in a strike. Foul ball there. Two-2 now. Swing in a line drive, slicing into right field. And they put up the stop sign at second. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Xavier Edwards the next up for the Marlins. Singi. He’s got a history of coming through in the big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. ripped on a line. One down. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. And now the right fielder, Ariberto Hernandez, 0 for three in this one. Right through there for a strike. really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. Hicks over at second. Senoha at first. One gone. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Two on, one out. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and2. In the air on the infield and the infield fly is called. Now batting the designated hitter, Kyle Sters. Now here’s the Marlins DH, Kyle Sters. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Swing and a ball driven out to center. Way back there. into Heritage Park and out of here. Home run. He’ll circle the bases and they throw three on the board. It’s 8-7. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game and just like that, they’re back in it. That’s as big as it gets right there. You take advantage of a mistake. That is an ultimate. Here it is. Watch it. I’m going to jog around the bases. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the Guardians bullpen. Tanner by out of the game and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching Matt Festa takes over on the mound. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. Base is empty with two away. Otto Lopez the next up for the Marlins. That’s off the inside corner and that’s ball one. a bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. The 1-1 is fouled off. swings through that one. It’s a strike out, but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. It’s now 87. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Calantrol. He’s been so good against lefties. Miami number 47 Quantrol leading. And here is Daniel. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. That’s in there. Strike one. Miami’s bullpen with some action. Calvin Foscher appears to be getting loose. Zuber warming up as well. That’s to third. Fair ball. Oh yeah. Now batting. So a man at first. Jose Ramirez digs in for the Guardians. Three for three with a homer and two doubles. That one outside. One and0. And another ball. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. and try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Grounder might be two. Quickly to second for one onto first. Double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Kyle Manardo. So, next will be the fourhole hitter for the Guardians. Kyle Manzardo, fouled off to the right. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. and down on strikes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing it for the Guardians there. And this remains a close one. It’s 8-7 here in Cleveland. Here’s the left fielder, Dane Meyers. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Hunter Gatis, the closer, is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. Hernandez getting cranked up as well. Looking to get the tying run on base. Swaging a drive deep left field. feeling for the wall as he makes the catch. Now that number 33. Yeah, it’s a really nice catch right there near the wall. And you have to use everything available to you. Know when your feet leave the grass and hit the warning track. Also, when you’re able to use the bare hand to feel for exactly how close you are. And right there, perfect use of his instruments. And here is Eric Wagaman. fouled off. He was late. One down. Base is empty. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Ramirez drifts towards it. pulls it down and he makes the catch. Two down. Got the pitch that he wanted. Just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open. Backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. Looks like it’ll be a pinch hitter. Augustine Ramirez looking for a two out spark with the base is empty. base knock center field and that puts the tying run on base. First pitch swing in went up there with a plan to be aggressive other than ripping one into the gap or blasting one over the wall. There aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive into center field. So that definitely felt good. Liam Hicks the next up for the Marlins. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Well, with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. check swing and he held up. Right now they’re looking for something. Hit hard into the gaps. Give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first out to center. Squeezes it and that’s the third out. So no runs here on a base hit, no errors and one left. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. Guardians eight and the Marlins seven. Now into the game. Jacob Marcy. He’ll be patrolling center field. Number three. Well, one-run game. Now it’s the shortstop. Gabrielle Aras. Gabrielle Ara. All right, Quantrol back to work. And there’s the strike. That one back up the middle and it gets through. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. All right, let’s go. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Man at first. So in now for Cleveland. Anel Martinez. Not even close there. Ball one. Arius aboard here at first with nobody out. Here comes the pitch. There goes the runner from first. Swinging a miss. Safe at second with a stolen base. Cleveland up around looking for more. misses inside and it’s two and one. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Base hit. Arius coming home. The throw in. It’s offline. The run comes in. It’s 97. So man aboard stepping up for the Guardians. CJ Cayas and takes low for ball one. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. And it’s one and one. He’s had a tough day at the plate. Three strikeouts already. It’s hard not to think negative, but you got to find a way to somehow center up the baseball and put it in play. Hit on the ground. Might be two. Edwards tossed to second and they turn the double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. So, two down now. And here is Brian Rochio. knee high. That’s in for a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. That one in the dirt and it’s one and two. Good job to fight that one off. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Over to first. That ends the inning. But the RBI single pushes across a run. Last chance coming up here for the Marlins. Back now. And on the mound, the closer Hunter Gatis. Well, he’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season, averaging more than one per inning. So, digging in, Javier Senoha. Javier Senoha. That’s too low. And that’s ball one. Turned on but foul wide of third. this one in the air right field. Cay and he makes the catch and there’s one down. Savior Edwards the next up for the Marlins. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Base is empty. One away. You’re in the top of the ninth. Now that’s smacked to right center and no one can get there. Around first and hustling for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. the relay safe and that’s his third hit. Putting some good swings on the ball. That’s his second extra base hit in this one. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front and ripped it into the outfield, that’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. One down, runner at third. Ariberto Hernandez, the next up for the Marlins outside with a breaking ball. Don’t be surprised, a ball on the ground to the corners that they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base. One away with a runner at third. Swinging a foul out of play. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at a one count. just not able to square it up. And that’s in the dirt. And he takes one right on the black. Two and two now. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. Tying run at the plate. Not close with that one. Full count now. Kyle Sters in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. The tying run at the plate. Now a screamer into the outfield. brings it in. Runner tags from third. Play at the plate. Safe. And it’s a onerun ball game. That wasn’t your standard sack fly. He barreled that baseball. Just couldn’t get it to drop in. So they’re down to their final out. Kyle Sters the next up for the Marlins. He’s already homerred in this game. Pitch misses. Ball one. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. And another ball. Rips that one to right. And that’ll do it. The Guardians hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, this turned out to be an exciting, very wellplayed game. Always feels great when you can take the lead in the eighth at home. Come out in the ninth, crowd will be behind that pitcher as he tries to get those final three outs. Everybody goes home happy with a win like this.
